Original airdate: November 17, 2020 Spirituality, philosophy, and science were once intertwined, but they diverged over time. We're returning to a time when Western medicine embraces the ancient healing arts. Medical doctors now regularly prescribe alternative therapies and energy medicines to their patients. But what is energy medicine, and how does it work?  Renowned energy medicine practitioner, scholar, and founder of the Yinova Center, Dr. Jill Blakeway, has also asked these questions.   Jill is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a clinical herbalist. The New York Times named her as one of Manhattan's top acupuncturists. As a practitioner, she is known for her intuitive approach to Chinese medicine and her skills as an energy healer. She documented her findings in her well-known book “Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of Healing.” Join me for this exciting episode, where Jill takes us on a journey to better understand, apply, and explain this powerful healing force within us. If you've ever wanted to learn more about alternative therapies like acupuncture, herbalism, and Qigong, you definitely don't want to miss this!

Madhu Anziani -- The Healing Power of Sound and Vibration

Awakin Call

**Please note this call is on Friday, rather than our usual Saturdays. "Losing all of the basic functions of being a human being was the greatest teacher," says musician and composer Madhu Anziani. "It was an opportunity to go fully into the teachings I had received around energy, sound, and vibration." In a baseball cap, hoodie, and jeans, Madhu stands behind a table, singing, swaying, and commanding a loop station, easy and natural as can be. There are no visible signs of his serious accident at the age of 23, during which a broken neck and spinal cord injury left him paralyzed from the neck down, incontinent, and unable to breathe on his own. Left only with his mind and its despairing thoughts, amid a flurry of emotions and poor prognoses, Madhu was forced to discover the gaps between his thoughts. And to realize the immense healing potential of his voice. At the time, Madhu was just about to graduate from San Francisco State University with a degree in jazz and world music performance. He had also just attended his first reiki workshop, a Japanese form of energy healing. Supported by his parents and community, Madhu began to apply sound practices. From his hospital bed, he practiced or listened to them day and night. Two and a half months later, upon his discharge, he walked out of the hospital on his own two legs, an extraordinary healing that was featured in the book, Energy Medicine, by Jill Blakeway. With humility and grace, he distills the process to this: "The primary purpose of a voice is to create vibration. We have this beautiful gift, and we can either create harmony or disharmony." Since his recovery, Madhu has been bringing harmony in a myriad of ways to all dimensions of himself, his ancestors, and the community at large. Madhu was born and raised in a Jewish-Puerto Rican family in the Bay Area, California. When he was in high school, he learned how to meditate from his grandmother. She also taught him how to do toning, an ancient sound healing practice in which vowels are elongated. "The vibrations can heal on the physical level, and can transform the mental, emotional, and spiritual levels, too." There is the sound, he explains, and then the silence between the sounds. The silence allows for the transformation of the sound to integrate more deeply into cellular memory. Toning, he continues, is a way to create space, and this allows us to live our lives with more spaciousness and flow. Madhu is perhaps best known as a vocal looping artist, musician, and composer. He studied jazz and world music at San Francisco State University, and is a regular lecturer there. He chants in numerous ancient languages, including Sanskrit, Tibetan, Shipibo, Quechua, and Hebrew. His music can be found on Spotify and other platforms, as well as under the name The Sami Brothers. Madhu is also a healer and ceremonialist, befitting of his name, which means "sweet nectar of the elders." He offers sessions in clinical hypnotherapy, vocal lessons, sound healing, and ancestral divination. Respectively, he is certified in sound, voice, and music healing from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Sanctioned as a teacher in the Pachakuti Mesa tradition of Ancestral Peruvian Healing Arts, which offers apprenticeship in earth honoring rituals and living in sacred reciprocity with spirits of nature. Blessed by Master Mingtong Gu to teach 5-Organ Sound Healing for emotional purification in the lineage of Wisdom Healing Qigong, Madhu has also been initiated as a stick diviner in the West African Dagara tradition, and serves as a medium between this world, the ancestral world, and the spirits of nature. "The whole universe is vibration. So when we make vibrations, we are communicating with the whole universe. We are vibrational beings in a vibrational experience." Please join us with this creative maker of harmony and healing in a call that will be part-conversation, part-workshop, with an invitation to explore sound, vibration, and the essence of being.

#straightfromcait - Other Care: The Secret Ingredient That Keeps The Minds, Bodies, and Spirits of Entrepreneurs Healthy

Overview Today, I’m flipping the script and talking about “Other Care” as part of your self-care plan. And before you get your panties in a bunch, I don’t mean taking care of others. I mean letting and paying others to take care of you! While there is plenty of advice out there about when to hire a virtual assistant, freeing up time in your schedule often isn’t enough! What about the parts of your life beyond work that need a little TLC? Aren’t there other things that you should be delegating out in order to feel more fulfilled?  Unfortunately, I think that there is this new understanding of “self-care” as something you need to do alone. And while self-care is healthy and essential (for me, it’s taking midday baths and taking walks with my dog Flora!), it shouldn’t have to be yet another thing we have to do ourselves. That’s why this episode is dedicated to what I call “other care” or allowing others to help us heal, relax, and find fulfillment. As an acupuncturist, I have supported thousands of people in their “other care.” The energy and positive intention that we share in a room together creates a healing environment even before any acupuncture occurs! If you’re interested in finding out how that works on an energetic and scientific level, I highly recommend the book Energy Medicine by Jill Blakeway. Recently, I have found “other care” by returning to acupuncture as a patient. I found an incredible acupuncturist – Kelly Drury in Montclair, NJ – who is supporting me in ways that I can’t support myself. Another healer that has helped me tremendously is Lindsey from La Lune Healing. Lindsay is a reiki practitioner who helped me sleep again after many sleepless nights following my achilles surgery. Salutogenesis Chiropractic is yet another group of healers that I am able to receive “other care” from as soon as I start feeling out of alignment. Having a healer that you know and trust is essential, no matter who you are. It is especially important for those experiencing burnout, because it’s often easier to let others start doing the work of filling you up when you are incredibly depleted.  I’d love to start celebrating Other Care. I want you to comment on any post this week from this episode and tag your healer. Let’s get their work out there. Let’s tell each other that it’s okay to have background support that isn’t DIRECTLY related to business activities. Let’s normalize outsourcing a portion of healing and stop feeling like we are responsible for ALL the things, ALL the time.   Quotes “I believe that as entrepreneurs who are focused on both earning a great income and making a great impact on the world, we need to fill our cups as often as possible. Hiring a VA will take some tasks away, take some things off your plate, and make the liquid in your cup drop slower, but it won’t FILL it back up.” (2:42-3:02) “We’ve seemingly put self-care in yet another category of ‘things we must do ourselves.’ But what if the thing that fills you up most actually comes from allowing someone else to hold space for you, to create a healing environment for you, to support your energy, to fill your cup, so you can go on and change the world the way you imagine?” (3:25-3:48) “The energy we share in a room together really does make a difference. When you allow someone to create a healing space for you, your body enters a parasympathetic nervous state BEFORE any treatment even happens – that means you’re healing before your healer even does anything because of energy and intention.” (3:57-4:19) “I don’t have to be in charge of my care. I have to be involved. I’ve got to show up, I’ve got to pay, I’ve got to make appointments, I’ve got to follow her instructions. But I don’t have to ‘own the task.’ I’ve handed that part over.” (4:47-5:01) “Having a healer that you know and trust, no matter what their modality, is so important. In fact, I suggest to nearly all my burnout coaching clients that they start working with someone at the same time as they start their coaching because especially when you’re burnt out you need to leave the filling of your cup to other people.” (5:39-6:00)   Links Free Breakthrough Burnout Call with Cait Energy Medicine by Jill Blakeway WellEssence LLC La Lune Healing Salutogenesis Chiropractic   Can’t wait to celebrate the healers this week.

Hey FRIED Fans!I had an amazing question from a fan on IG a couple weeks ago that I wanted to answer. Shout out to @vitalitahealth on Instagram for this great Q!She asked what to do when you find yourself in a burnout relapse. When someone asks a really great question, I always like to let it roll around in my head for awhile before I decide on an answer. After rolling this one around for a few weeks, I have a counter question:Is it a burnout relapse, or have you been burnt out this whole time? When I wrote The Bouncebackability Factor (which you can snag on amazon if you haven’t gotten it yet!), I wrote that I burnt out two separate times. Since writing it, I’ve realized that I didn’t actually burn out two separate times, I was actually weaving in and out of burnout for 6 or 7 years. There were times that I felt better, for sure, but there weren’t too many times that I felt safe when I felt bad. When I say that, what I mean is - every time I felt bad or had a down day, I was nervous that it would last forever. I judged myself for feeling that way again. I thought about all the things I did to help myself and would get really discouraged that I was having a bad day. Wasn’t I doing enough? Why wasn’t it working? Why couldn’t I control this? Don’t I know better by now? Let’s compare and contrast this with what happens now when I have a bad day (because bad days still happen, I’m human! Burnout recovery does not guarantee you to have #allgooddaysallthetime). Now, when I have a bad day, I feel secure in my ability to get the care I need to get back to neutral within a decent amount of time. Sometimes that means some type of grooming self care, sometimes that means getting an acupuncture appointment or a reiki appointment, sometimes it means shutting down social media for a few days, sometimes it means chatting with friends or visiting family. The major difference is: I don’t feel unsafe, bad, guilty, wrong, or inadequate when I have a bad day. It’s just information. My body/brain/spirit need some extra love - it doesn’t even matter why, it just matters that I got the memo and can respond. If you feel like you’re relapsing, the question you should ask yourself are: Is this really a relapse or have I been burnt out this whole time? If you feel like you truly recovered previously and you are actually having a relapse, the first thing you do is reach out for help. The best option is to put yourself in someone else’s care as soon as possible. When you’re burnt out, self-healing is so much harder because not only is your cup empty, but it’s likely also cracked. So, you might find yourself doing all. the. things. but not getting the results you want. We’ve all heard that you can’t pour from an empty cup, you also can’t fill your own empty cracked cup without outside help. That outside help could be: therapy, Chinese medicine (acupuncture/herbs) reiki, coaching, somatic healing, rtt, hypnosis, massage, or any number of other techniques. Here’s what is most important when choosing them: You want to do it. There is another person in the room (even zoom room), helping to create a healing space. Other people’s energy MATTERS when you’re healing from burnout. End of story. If you want to know more about people creating healing spaces, I recommend the book Energy Medicine by Jill Blakeway. While it’s happening, you are focused on it and nothing else. Right now, it can be hard to go places to get help with restrictions still in place in many cities, but you can get assistance online - just be sure that your do not disturb is enabled and you’re not checked FB during your healing time (yeah, I see you ;))   If you feel like the truth is that you’ve actually been burnt out this whole time, the same advice applies. Reach out for help. The reason that asking the question is important isn’t that the advice is different, it’s that it makes you feel right with yourself. You understand what you’re undertaking. You know what to tell the practitioner that you’re working with. It’s always easier to move forward from clarity and it’s always easier to heal with honesty.   I hope this was helpful, my beautiful FRIED Fans. As I wrap up this week’s episode, I want to remind you that subscribes, reviews, and shares make FRIED’s world go round! I am so grateful for the support you show FRIED week in an d week out!

Having recently explored the biomedical aspects of acupuncture on the show, this conversation takes an interesting counterpoint to examine how this modality also walks in the world of energy medicine. What is an acupuncturist/energy healer doing talking about sex? Dr. Jill Blakeway, who I had the pleasure of working with on my fertility journey, says that our libido is life energy. Today we’re discussing her book Sex Again, which she wrote to help her patients get back to sex, but from the perspective of what sex is or can do for you energetically. She explains that sex can be used as a tool for us all to experience enlightenment, to tap into the collective consciousness— and feel oneness with the world. Whether you’re looking to reconnect to your sexuality with yourself or a partner, she provides us with actionable (and fun!) tips for reigniting our inner flame. We also discuss what it really means to be “sexy” and how it all starts with self-acceptance and releasing the ego. This episode will encourage you to examine your sexuality and reclaim your connectedness to self and the world. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We not may be able to explain it, but we all know what it feels like to be surrounded by negative energy. Jill Blakeway, a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine (DACM) and a licensed and board-certified acupuncturist (LAc), has been practicing energy healing for over 20 years and joined mindbodygreen CCO Olessa Pindak on the mbg podcast to share her thoughts on protecting yourself from negative energy, creating healthy boundaries, and her own exploration into the scientific explanations of energy healing. Jill first recognized she could affect people's energy fields with her hands after helping a patient heal from prostate cancer through energy healing modalities such as acupuncture and hands-on healing without the needles. She doesn't credit their work alone with his recovery but says it was part of the equation. She explains that we all have a healing energy that flows through us called source energy, and by tapping into this, we can affect the energy around us. To connect with our healing power and separate from unwanted energy around us, Jill recommends an exercise that helps us get grounded in our own light. Here, she leads us through the exercise so we can feel centered and strong even amid negativity. "You don't need to wrap yourself in anything; you just push your own light out," Jill explained. "Just that exercise floods you with wisdom." By connecting with your inner light, you may find answers to questions you've been asking. If someone around you could also use some healing energy, with their permission, you may put your hands near them to share the healing light. This soothing transfer could help them to feel more aligned with who they are at the core and ease their anxiety. We cannot always choose which energy we want to surround ourselves with, but this type of practice teaches us to stay grounded in ourselves. Jill's experience with energetic healing and a deep understanding of how humans relate to one another is invaluable for those looking to heal themselves and improve their relationships with others. She is the co-author of Making Babies: A Proven 3-Month Program for Maximum Fertility, and the author of Sex Again: Recharging your Libido. In her new book she seamlessly connects the spiritual aspects and scientific facts of Healing Energy Work, how this tool is accessible to all, and it's expansive Universal source. This book is written in a beautiful, thorough and honest way, and it is unique in it's simplicity and warmth. I highly recommend it. During our conversation Dr. Blakeway shares how her turbulent childhood enhanced her sensitivity to this energy, how she eventually found herself in this work, and a few simple techniques with which we can tap into it ourselves. Please listen in and enjoy. ps: This book literally fell off the shelf for me as they say - as I've been deep into studying the subject and have recently become certified as a Reiki 1 practitioner - I truly feel as though my teacher appeared. “Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of Healing” comes out April 2nd (run, don't walk to get your copy). You can also find Dr. Blakeway and her incredible team at yinovacenter.com JILL'S FAVORITES Dr. Blakeway what are your “keep my sanity” essentials? Breathing exercises. In my new book, Energy Medicine, I give an example of a breathing exercise that I use when treating patients. As part of my research for the book, I was given an EEG of my brain and an EKG of my heart, and found that they went into resonance with each other when I treated patients. That means that may brain and heart emit the same frequency when I am performing acupuncture. Interestingly, the patient's heart then goes into resonance with mine. To accomplish this, I take 6 breaths a minute which increases my heart rate variability and allows me to adapt my body so that my energy field can connect with a patients field in a way that allows a transfer of information.  This slow regular breathing makes me feel calm and I also do it simply to remain clear and grounded.  What's your favorite workout or type of movement? Qi gong is an ancient technique that helps energy flow through the body. It perfectly balances yin and yang and allows qi to flow. It's the perfect form of exercise for an energy healer. There is also a form of qi gong, called medical qi gong, where a practitioner uses the qi gong exercises to cultivate energy and then transmits the energy generated to a patient.  What's your non-negotiable self-care ritual or tool? I'm British, so I love a cup of tea and find taking time to make and drink tea to be a calming ritual. When I was writing Energy Medicine, I spent a lot of time in Japan, where the ritual surrounding tea is an art form. Slowly sipping green tea from my favorite cup is a daily treat and the way I unwind.  What is the best beauty/health/wellness advice a parent or loved one has given you? My mother was an excellent cook and my father was a very good gardener. I used to host a weekly podcast for CBS called Grow Cook Heal that combined my love of growing vegetables, cooking nourishing food and wellness. I got that from my family and I'm grateful. These days my husband Noah and I have a vegetable garden in upstate New York and nothing gives me more pleasure than wandering down to the garden and picking what is ripe and ready to eat and cooking with it. It's a way of letting the seasons guide my food choices.

We also spoke about the Five Basic Fertility Types according to her widely popular book, Making Babies: A Proven 3-Month Program for Maximum Fertility and the idea behind the 90 days.  For more information about Jill, her services and books you can reach her at Yinovacenter.com ----- This episode is sponsored by Goddess Momma Fertility Yoga Bundle. On episode 5 of GCH, host Jill Blakeway talks to Herbalist Eric Baumgartner about his new invention - an herbal coffee alternative that brews up into a delicious latte. The herbs included are energizing and improve focus with none of the jitteriness of coffee. Jill asks Eric how he came up with the idea and why he chose to include mushrooms like cordyceps and reishi in his brew. She also suggests that the GCH listeners start a herbal latte campaign by going into their local coffeeshop and asking the barista to brew up a cup. In our cook segment today, Jill visits Acupuncturist Sarah Sajdak who makes her a hearty Peruvian Breakfast Soup. Jill and Sarah chat about the healing properties of soup and Jill helps Sarah cook the soup which consists of a whole chicken brewed up as broth with the chicken meat added back into the soup along with potatoes, noodles, ginger, lime, cilantro, smoked chipotle peppers, and green onions. On our Heal segment Jill visits Clinical Psychologist and Author, Dr. Erin Olivo, to get some advice about how deal with social anxiety during the festive season. Erin points out that most of us get a little nervous before going to a party and she gives us some practical tips on how to be more confident. Also on this episode Jill answers a listener’s question about natural family planning and she encourages the GCH listeners to write in and tell her what they’ve learned this year.

Join Ellen Goldsmith, L.Ac. as she speaks with Jill Blakeway, L. Ac., CEO of the Yin Ova Center in New York City and author of Making Babies: A proven 3-month program for maximum fertility, co-authored Dr. Sami David, a reproductive endocrinologist. This book offers women and men a guide to fertility using the wisdom of Chinese medicine in conjunction with Western medicine. Fertility medicine today is all about aggressive surgical, chemical, and technological intervention, in Making Babies, acupuncturist Jill Blakeway and Dr. David draw on the best of both Eastern and Western medicine. By identifying your “fertility type,” inspired by the classical patterns of Chinese Medicine, you can focus in on the strategies most helpful in your particular situation, and avoid the things that may be causing you problems. Those strategies include: choosing fertility-promoting foods; properly predicting the best time to conceive (hint: the answer is not 14 days after your last period began); accurately pinpointing the cause of your fertility problems; making specific and sometimes surprising lifestyle choices, like exercising less; taking cough medicine; decreasing doses of fertility drugs; and getting acupuncture along with IVF. The book concludes with an easy three-month program designed to get your body in optimal shape to conceive. Think of it as “fertility book camp,” only without the scary drill sergeant. Some people will need additional support from a health care professional, whether conventional or complementary or both. Read this book for a clear and informative point of view on fertility.
