In the June 2021 Editor and Publisher cover story, editor-in-chief Nu Yang takes an in-depth look at how a number of Minneapolis journalists covered the events from George Floyd’s death to the conviction of the police officer deemed responsible. In this edition of E&P’s Vodcast series “E&P Reports,” publisher Mike Blinder has a frank discussion with the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s editorial management on what it was like to run a newsroom remotely, while covering one of the biggest stories of our time. Moreover, with all the global attention focused on their city, was it hard to hold to journalistic standards of balance of fairness in each story filed? Plus, with reporters receiving death threats and being shot at with rubber bullets, how did they maintain safety for each team member in the field? As they reflect a year later, how did the incidents and issues effect the Star Tribune’s own feelings and policies on diversity and inclusion? Learn what it was like to manage a newsroom through crises with Star Tribune editor and senior vice president Rene Sanchez, managing editor and vice president Suki Dardarian, and newly appointed managing editor for diversity and community Kyndell Harkness. Dr. Iris Chyi is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in media economics, and well-known for benchmarking reader demand for the print and digital content provided by major market newspapers. A few years ago, she caused a stir in the industry by describing through data that the digital content that the top 50 newspapers provide was being perceived as an “inferior good” by their readers. She went on to compare digital non-replica news sites as “Raman noodles,” and the print editions to steak, stating that people tend to perceive online newspapers as less likable and less satisfying. In her book, “Trial and Error: U.S. Newspapers’ Digital Struggles toward Inferiority,” she challenges U.S. newspapers’ technology-driven strategy, calling for a critical reassessment of the future of the industry. In her latest research, “The Impact of COVID-19 on 20 U.S. Newspapers’ Print and Digital Circulation,” Dr. Chyi takes a hard look at empirical data on the impact of COVID-19 with these selected publications. The report reveals that even through digital subscriptions went up by 64 percent between 2019 and Q3 2020, print circulation dropped by an average of 21 percent. Data showed that the average price charged for digital access is now $181 a year, while seven-day print subscription rates are $1,052 a year. The report states that this price gap shows it takes nearly six new digital subscribers to make up for the loss of one print subscriber. In this edition of “E&P REPORTS,” Dr. Chyi reviews the findings of her April 2021 report with E&P publisher Mike Blinder. Jaime Read - Summer... the 2nd time (Vinyl underground) Growing up in UK during the middle of the Acid House craze late 80's, Jaime Read was influenced by the early Chicago, Detroit and New York sounds which his sister would play. The 'Capital' rap show with Mike Allen was instrumental in showing Jaime some of the hottest underground sounds like Cybotron 'R9' & Jam on it by Newcleus mixed with now classic hip hop. Listening to pirate radio stations like 'Friends FM', 'Fantasy', and his personal favourite 'Smart Boys FM' were instrumental in his early days. It was only inevitable that when he got his first bit of equipment himself, Jaime had to have a go at it himself. As the mid-90s moved on, Jaime first released music on strong labels like 10th Planet under the name Wookie as well as his first full length release on Fragmented Records named 'The End of the Beginning'. Around that time, Jaime introduced his own 'Push to Shove' imprint releasing under the name LHAS inc. for which he was a founding member of with Felix Dickinson. Some say Jaime is the ideal mix between house and techno styles. The perfect blend of two of the most beloved versions of dance music. With nearly 30 releases under this name (and some that are not credited to Jaime - such as the Joe Lewis Story), each release has hit near legendary status. Key releases like the 2010 EP named 'Never the Future' on Elektrosouls Recordings or the unique 'On the Beaches' on the revered Golf Channel label in 2015 which had Jaime showing his versatility with some unique styles. In the past 5 years Jaime's many of his classic material has been reissued like the most recent 'Hevalo 2021 Edition' on Push to Shove. His last all-new material found its way to the Vinyl Underground label just last year simply named 'EP'. The future is looking bright as Jaime assures us that he has lots of new material ready to be released so make sure you follow his Bandcamp page.  You can trust anything Jaime is involved will be pure class. Jaime doesn't get as many opportunities to DJ as some others but if you get a chance to hear him out you are in for a treat. He is one of the UK's best DJ's you never heard of and always rocks a party!!! (As this mix clearly does!). We are glad to have Jaime make a Chubby! podcast exclusive mix for us. This one is guaranteed to get you dancing! It pays respect to some classy sounds of the past while working up some newer and lesser-known futuristic track vibes. 71 New Jersey Weeklies Go Non-Profit

For more than 66 years, the Parker family has owned the 14 weekly newspapers of the New Jersey Hills Media Group, which serves 50 communities in north central New Jersey. With a combined circulation of just under 100,000, it is the largest weekly newspaper group in the state. When the current owners, Liz and Steve Parker, reached out to Grimes, McGovern & Associates to explore the possibility of sale, little did they know that an ensuing deal would be consummated that ended up creating a new non-profit entity that would eventually own and manage the group. With letters of intent now signed, the Corporation for NJ Local Media (CNJLM) will take over the operation and start a major fundraising initiative to achieve the goal of “building strong communities through journalism and civic engagement.” Moreover, the two leaders of CNJLM: executive director Amanda Richardson and founding chair Nic Platt met each other as opposing candidates for a local election. Learn more about how this transition took place and what plans are underway in converting this family-owned group to a non-profit local news entity as E&P publisher Mike Blinder interviews Richardson and Jim McDonald, senior associate for Grimes, McGovern & Associates.

It wasn’t too long ago that the family-owned Silver City (N.M.) Daily Press Publishing Co. announced  that it would print its final edition. But, 24 hours later, it was still printing under new, local ownership. It was then-general manager Nickolas Siebel (now publisher) who quickly reached out to local civic leaders for help in putting together a loan to allow him to keep this hometown paper alive. Today, the Press is thriving under Siebel’s leadership, even in a COVID-19 world, with healthy subscription numbers and advertising revenue. Plus, the Press has expanded its offerings to provide varsity football broadcasts, an auction to help local businesses during the pandemic, and even publishing a special report for the local municipal league this year. In this segment of E&P Reports, E&P publisher Mike Blinder chats with Siebel on what it takes to takeover a local publication and keep it thriving even in challenging economic times.

The Webster-Kirkwood (Mo.) Times is back in print following their shutdown in March due to Covid-19. The comeback is due to donations from loyal readers and the focus and energy of managers who worked with the local business community to craft a deal to keep this paper printing. Today, the newspaper prints more than 35,000 full color copies each week to two suburban communities just southwest of St. Louis. The staff, although operating on a tight budget, boasts high ad count with tons of profitable classified ads. In this edition of E&P Reports, E&P publisher Mike Blinder goes one-on-one with two of the paper’s managers/owners: publisher Randy Drilingas and editor-in-chief Jaime Mowers, who detail their struggle to get the paper back in business and what they continue to do to keep it growing.   Related Links:   Back By Popular Demand! Dubbing this episode an "Adult-ish Quickie," Vincent speaks to a recent loss of his and the thoughts behind having to grieve a loss in its entirety — from the physical loss to the emotional gap that death and/or the end of a relationship brings. In this moment of pure vulnerability, Vincent takes listeners on a transitive journey as he processes the death of a loved one, talks to the respect of allowing individuals time to process a loss, and then learning how to move on. Relationships may end, either through death or change of circumstance, but it's always important to take the time to grieve the situation. While a bit somber, we hope this quickie makes you a little more thankful for all those around you and all those you carry with you — however best you choose to carry them.
