RTDNA President & CEO, and former WTMJ News Director Dan Shelley joins the program to discuss the RTDNA conference in Milwaukee this year. Dan speaks on the current relationship between media and its consumers, the importance of maintaining the integrity of journalism and media, and how we got to the point of elected officials being more and more distant with the media.
In April this year, Get Known got the chance to head to the U. S. National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) event in Las Vegas. The event gave us an opportunity to interview Dan Shelley the President and CEO of the Radio Television Digital News Association or RTDNA. As you will hear, Dan has been a long-time journalist and newsroom leader who has had experiences over the decades setting the standard for how the biggest news organizations deliver news. Over that time he has been helping the industry transition from its analog roots to the digital area. In our interview, we start with some history of the RTDNA and how it works today. We then get into the constitutional purpose of journalism for the American public and some of the differences between that and Europe's democracies. Dan's own background is itself a history lesson in how broadcast journalism and digital news evolved in the U.S. We get into talking about the production of digital news, the advocacy work of RTDNA on behalf of journalists, and news ethics in a world increasingly driven by social media and polarized information. The US broadcasting industry and how news is made in Europe have many similarities but have so many interesting differences from how things are done. As we in Europe engage with US media and make our mark, it is so important to take these understandings into consideration. The market in the U.S. is so big and diverse. But like everywhere, social media and general digitalization have been huge factors in how information is consumed and it is great to see there are people like Dan Shelley in the mix helping the industry grow and develop.
In September 2023, E&P reported on the Arizona Newspapers Association and the Arizona Broadcasters Association merger. In the past year, there have been several legacy newspaper and public media mergers, such as Chicago Public Media's acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times, The Steinman's "gifting" of their 150+-year-old Lancaster, PA newspaper to the local public broadcasting outlet and the Denton (TX) Record-Chronicle becoming part of Dallas-Fort Worth's KERA Public Broadcasting operations. Many news media pundits predict that, in the very near future, we will see more broadcasting and newspaper newsrooms working as one to compete for larger audiences and achieve new economies of scale to achieve sustainable business models. For this reason, E&P sought insights from the Radio Television Digital News Association's CEO & President Dan Shelley on how the RTDNA is helping journalism survive in today's complex local news media ecosystem. Topics discussed in this episode of "E&P Reports" include the fight for cameras (and microphones) in courtrooms. Should the news media industry police itself in defining who is a journalist? We also explore the growth of citizen journalism, its impact on local news media outlets and more. Dan Shelley is president and CEO of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and president of the RTDNA Foundation. Previously, Dan was senior vice president of digital content strategy for iHeartMedia, senior vice president at Interactive One (part of Radio One), director of digital media at WCBS-TV, New York and an executive producer for WCBS-TV News.
How do you reimagine an organization so that its governance and culture are transformed to meet today's needs? How do you further reinvent a conference to help your organization stand out in a crowded meetings field? In this episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda interviews Tara Puckey, Executive Director of Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). Tara discusses:How she's only ever worked for journalist associations. The crowded association space that RTDNA occupies because there are over 70 journalist associations! How RTDNA has changed over the years to include Internet journalists. The governance changes that RTDNA started about five years ago to expand committee membership, make the Board more strategic, and create a pipeline of new and upcoming leaders. The staff culture changes that Tara ushered in, including going fully remote, unlimited PTO, and creating a culture where staff show up for the people around them. How RTDNA completely revamped their conference: they reduced the number of attendees, eliminated panel discussions, made every session be more discussion than lecture, added white space to the schedule, and emphasized self care throughout the conference (think puppies and baby goats). How RTDNA partners with a local nonprofit in the city of their conference. Attendees participate in a service project, and instead of renting furniture and equipment, the association purchases and then donates everything to the local partner (often at a lower cost then renting!).How it's really hard to be a journalist these days, especially when covering violence or war.References:RTDNA websiteBaby goats at the 2023 conference

Over the last number of years, RTDNA Canada's membership had dwindled to just over 100 members as newsrooms tighten budgets and freeze travel for news directors. However, under the leadership of current president Lis Travers, numbers have rebounded over the last few months as the association looks to evolve with the industry. Travers joins us on this episode to talk about the RTDNA's aggressive membership drive and new board of directors, in addition to why she feels we need to spend more time celebrating the industry's wins, rather than focusing on the challenges.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Hamilton Today Show Podcast with Scott Thompson.... As Sunwing grapples with its ongoing troubles caused by a data breach, works to get more flights off the ground and passengers moving along, we speak with Keith Mackey to get his take on how the company is handling things. “A surgery backlog exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic has steered some Canadians thousands of miles away from home to get life-changing procedures done without the wait.” A new piece on Global News-dot-C-A addresses this: ‘Living in pain': Canadians travel across the world to avoid surgery backlog. Today is Queen Elizabeth's 96th birthday, Prince Harry has given a new interview, and recent Angus Reid polling shows that Canadians like the Queen but are growing more open to severing ties with the British monarchy. Let's talk with our friend and monarchy expert, Patricia Treble. How do people not lose their sense of perspective, hope – and agency – in the face of some pretty rough times in the world, what with the atrocious war in Ukraine, ongoing COVID-19, and climate change? “Conservative leadership contender Jean Charest is promising that, if elected, he will change the Canada Health Act to allow provinces greater flexibility in health-care delivery [...] Charest says it is about strengthening the single payer system. He's also framing the policy change as protecting Canada from future lockdowns by building capacity.” Putin has claimed that Russia is victorious in Mariupol after sealing away resistance fighters and civilians who were holed up in an old steel mill, rather than storm the mill. Now what? Carson Jerema writes in the National Post that a combination of factors are going to be hitting Canadians wallets, making life more expensive… it is not just the Bank of Canada but also the policies of the federal Liberals. Hamilton city councillor Jason Farr has announced that he'll be running in the upcoming provincial election as a candidate for the Liberal party. Guests: Keith Mackey, Mackey International Jamie Mauracher, Digital Broadcast Journalist with Global News, RTDNA and Gemini award-winning journalist Patricia Treble, founder of Write Royalty, Royal contributor to Maclean's Steve Joordens, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto Jean Charest, candidate for the Conservative leadership race Reggie Cecchini, Washington Correspondent for Global News Carson Jerema, Comment Editor with the National Post Jason Farr, Councillor, Ward 2, City of Hamilton and now candidate for the Ontario Liberal Party in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek Scott Radley. Welcome back to Filipino Fridays! We have an incredible episode featuring the award-winning journalist of CBC Radio One, Michelle Eliot. Michelle joins us to talk about Filipino representation in broadcast media and how it impacts our community. We talk about how her immigrant experience has influenced her approach in telling stories in the media, which would include asking thoughtful questions where our community and other communities of color are well represented without being "othered". By representing the experience of many others, we talk about how meaningful it is to be a voice and perspective that brings light to the immigrant experience. Michelle also takes us through the journey of her career in journalism and talks about the most exciting part of hosting a live radio show. We discuss Mabuhay BC - a feature launched in CBC during Filipino Heritage Month in Canada that focuses on stories about the robust and diverse Filipino community. From articulating the kinship and bond between the Filipino and indigenous community, to highlighting the meaning or stories behind our Filipino names and also talking about issues that reflect the Filipino people. We chat about pushing the Filipino story forward, increasing the diversity in our stories and our responsibility as an immigrant in this community and how we can be in solidarity and kapwa with others. Lastly, Michelle shares her go-to karaoke song and what Filipino food items would be found on her boodle fight (kamayan). ABOUT MICHELLE ELIOT Michelle Eliot is the host of CBC Radio One's B.C. mid day open line show, BC Today. Michelle is an award-winning journalist with CBC Radio One, and has become a familiar voice as a regular guest host on regional and national programs, interviewing community members and prominent politicians, as well authors and musicians such as Douglas Coupland and Bif Naked. But her true passion is for the open line, where her skill at engaging callers probes further into their viewpoints and digs deeper into their personal stories. Her work has been recognized by the RTDNA and the Jack Webster Foundation, winning awards for her team's coverage of the ongoing overdose crisis and the 2017 NDP and Green Party deal. She has also received nominations for her story about immigrants learning to swim later in life, and for her profile of a well-loved woman in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside who died of an overdose. Michelle was born in the Philippines and moved to Canada with her family at 12-years old, settling in North Vancouver. Her experience as a young immigrant planted the seed of understanding for people whose lives are changed by new circumstances. Leslie says it's time to end the journalism stigma of “getting over” stress and anxiety because it's “part of the job” or we need to “pay our dues.” Journalists are resilient, but also human. Leslie has been featured presenter for journalism conferences including RTDNA, IRE, and ONA. Her yoga for journalists work has been featured in Yoga Journal and the Journalism Institute National Press Club. Leslie is a 500 hour registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance. She's trained in trauma-informed yoga and meditation. She's also currently studying Advanced Yoga Psychology with a licensed psychotherapist and yoga/meditation teacher.Connect with Leslie Rangel on Instagram @thenewsyogiConnect with Leslie Draffin on Instagram @lesliedraffinConnect with the podcast on Instagram @thelightwithinpodcastSend us an email: thelightwithinpodcast@gmail.comPLEASE REMEMBER to rate, review, download and share with someone you love!

Should podcasters adhere to ethical standards? Let's explore this idea. Even if we're not doing local journalism, we are dealing with information and telling real stories of our community. If we're not careful, the way we tell those stories could cross into unethical territory. This is the first part of a mini-series on ethical podcasting. After listening to this, there are a few things I'd like you to do before the next episode in this series. Homework for the next episode on ethical podcasting Listen to episode 256 of 99% Invisible.
