Air New Zealand will fly two non-stop services a week between Auckland and Hobart when a two-way transtasman bubble is started.The airline last flew there 23 years ago and said today the city would be its tenth Australian destination.Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran said the route will be a much-needed economic boost for New Zealand's tourism industry."Our Hobart - Auckland route will open a direct link between 540,000 potential Tasmanian tourists and our biggest city, with regional hot spots like Queenstown and Rotorua a short skip away."Flights would be on Airbus A320neo aicraft and on Thursday and Sunday to make the most of domestic connectivity and provide the best long weekend options for travellers, he said.Foran said that while New Zealand will be a key destination for Tasmanians, the route will open opportunities for Kiwis too."As Australia's second oldest city, Hobart is rich in heritage and its world-famous Museum of Old and New Art mixes antiquities among contemporary art."The state would be popular with Kiwis wanting to enjoy world class art and culture, to the food and wine scene, spectacular landscapes and an abundance of wildlife."Similarly, we know Tasmanians love to visit New Zealand and this direct service to Auckland will make it that much easier to get out into our great outdoors and access our winter playgrounds."Air New Zealand's chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty said all regulatory approval was in place for the flights which take about four hours.The airline - which is operating just 11 per cent of its pre-Covid transtasman services - had been constantly reviewing its network.''The environment we're in now is totallly different and that market was the largest where we're not operating a non-stop flight between Australia and New Zealand,'' she said.''We think it's a great opportunity to open up to those people.''She said hoped the service would be well balanced between Tasmanians coming to New Zealand and vice versa. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) speaks in support of the nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) to serve as Secretary of the Interior. In speech on the U.S. Senate floor on March 11, 2021, Wyden said Haaland's cooperative work in Congress are a sign of the way she will lead the Department of the Interior. He called her a "very special sort of leader" who was able to withstand heated questions during her confirmation hearing last month. "She's been a leader in generating bipartisan support for efforts in the House," Wyden said of Haaland. 'She's got one of the most conservative members of the House singing her praises," he added, a reference to Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska). Wyden spoke before the Senate cleared a procedural hurdle on Haaland's nomination on March 11. A final confirmation vote is expected on March 15. The Department of the Interior is the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities to tribes and their citizens. It includes Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Education and the recently-established Bureau of Trust Funds Administration, which is taking over most of the duties previously assigned to the Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians. Sen. Steve Daines (R-Montana) discusses his opposition to the historic nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) to serve as Secretary of the Interior. According to Daines, Haaland holds views on energy development that are not part of the "mainstream." He cited her stance on oil pipelines that run through tribal treaty lands. "She's been enthusiastic in her calls to stop not just the Keystone pipeline but all pipelines, calling for a ban for all pipelines," Daines said on March 11, 2021. "She even protested the Dakota Access Pipeline herself." Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, addressed her stance during her confirmation hearing in February. She said she went to the #NoDAPL encampment in North Dakota because the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and other Indian nations felt they weren't being adequately consulted about their own treaty territory. The federal courts have repeatedly ruled that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers failed to take tribal views into account before approving the final portion of the pipeline. The agency has been ordered to take yet another look at the matter. Despite opposition from Daines and other Republicans, the U.S. Senate is moving forward with Haaland's nomination to lead the Department of the Interior, the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities so tribes and their citizens. Victoria Diana is a stand-up comedian, a writer, and a filmmaker in Upstate NY. In 2020 she won a $40,000 grant from the Central New York Short Film Competition, an arts-funded initiative by Empire State Development and sponsored by the CNY Arts/Innovation Group. She used that money to fund her short film called "Devour".
