** We're talking about abortion in this episode, and occasionally we mention sexual abuse and violence. Nothing graphic, we promise. But some listeners may find what follows distressing. Be safe. **We're weighing up the arguments of the Pro Choice and Pro Life movements. Perhaps we can convince you that the case against abortion - the pro-life case - isn't as dumb and mean as it's often portrayed to be, and nor does it depend on religious dogma. This episode is sponsored by Zondervan's new book The Global Church: The First Eight Centuries by Donald Fairbairn.LINKS Read Judith Jarvis Johnson's groundbreaking article about abortion, where she offered the violinist thought experiment as a way to illustrate bodily autonomy: A Defense of Abortion by Judith Jarvis Thomson, Philosophy and Public Affairs, Vol. 1, No. 1. (Autumn, 1971), pp 47-66. Get to know our guest, Professor Margaret Somerville.Read Somerville's book that first introduced her to John, The Ethical Canary: Science, Society, and the Human Spirit Say hi to our guest, Dr Emma Wood. Here's some more info on Professor Michael Tooley, Emma mentions as we speak with her. He wrote a very influential book called Abortion and Infanticide in the 1980s, where he argues that an entity can't possess a right to life unless it has the capacity to desire its continued existence. Here's the article called 'Reasons why women have induced abortions: a synthesis of findings from 14 countries', published in the journal, Contraception, in 2017. And here are the statistics on numbers of abortions worldwide, from the Guttmacher Institute Here's some more on Professor Peter Singer's argument in favour of abortion: "When a woman has an abortion, the fetus is alive, and it is undoubtedly human – in the sense that it is a member of the species homo sapiens. It isn't a dog or a chimpanzee ... But mere membership of our species doesn't settle the moral issue of whether it is wrong to end a life. As long as the abortion is carried out at less than 20 weeks of gestation – as almost all abortions are – the brain of the fetus has not developed to the point of making consciousness possible." He goes on: "Admittedly, birth is in some ways an arbitrary place to draw the line at which killing the developing human life ceases to be permissible, and instead becomes murder ... A prematurely born infant may be less developed than a late-term fetus. But the criminal law needs clear dividing lines and, in normal circumstances, birth is the best we have." Here's Don Marquis' article that we spend a lot of time on in the second half of this episode: "Why Abortion is Immoral", in the Journal of Philosophy vol.86, no.4 (April 1989), pages 183-202: "The claim that the primary wrong-making feature of a killing is the loss to the victim of the value of its future has obvious consequences for the ethics of abortion. The future of a standard fetus includes a set of experiences, projects, activities, and such which are identical with the futures of adult human beings and are identical with the futures of young children. Since the reason that is sufficient to explain why it is wrong to kill human beings after the time of birth is a reason that also applies to fetuses, it follows that abortion is prima facie seriously morally wrong." Here's a link to the full New York Times podcast 'The Argument' episode called 'Why the Anti-Abortion Side Will Lose, Even if it Wins' (if you don't have a NYT subscription, just look it up on your podcast app - it was published on April 14, 2021. Watch Paxton Smith's speech from her Texas high school graduation here. Read this article in The Economist called 'Texas's new proposal shows why abortion law is a mess in America', re: the so-called Texan "heartbeat bill". Here's more on the Mississippi case that will come before the Supreme Court and challenge Roe v Wade, from the New York Times. Producer Kaley found this article really interesting while researching this episode: The epic political battle over the legacy of the suffragettes, in The Atlantic which explores why both sides of the abortion debate see themselves as inheritors of the early women's movement. Read the paper by economists Janet L Yellen and George Akerlof called 'An analysis of out-of-wedlock childbearing in the United States', Quarterly Journal of Economics, May 1996, which carried this quote (among lots of other interesting insights): “By making the birth of the child the physical choice of the mother, the sexual revolution has made marriage and child support a social choice of the father.”

+ Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 13: 24 – 30 Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds. "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?' He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' His slaves said to him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?' He replied, 'No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, "First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn."'" Today's readings are from:Romans 2.14-28Brethren, when Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast of your relation to God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed in the law, and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth - you then who teach others, will you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you." Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical.Matthew 5.33-41The Lord said, "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil. You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles."New Testament passages are usually from the Holy Cross translation, Brookline, MA. Old Testament readings are frequently from the Revised Standard Version. Please feel free to share this podcast from The Ambigua with anyone who might enjoy or benefit from it - especially people who spend a lot of time traveling, or who can't make it to liturgy, or who have trouble reading.Comments & suggestions for improvement welcome @TheAmbigua or via email.

Sickle Cell Disease was an unknown notion as foreign as a distant galaxy at a trillion light years away until his youngest son was diagnosed with this chronic condition at the age of 5. For a few years, life seemed like a roller coaster that would not stop. In this episode, Simon tells you how you make sure your property is always fully let, which will help you avoid the dreaded "void periods". KEY TAKEAWAYS When a property stands empty, it is costing you money. Make sure the properties in your portfolio are all assets and not liabilities! Sometimes work needs to be done to a property before you can move people in. Be as quick as you can, and remember to advertise the property as soon as you are able. Before you rent out the property, always check the supply and demand in the area, and adjust the rent accordingly. Perhaps you can charge more per month, and haven't realised? Keep on top of maintenance and other issues that may turn people off. Remember that this is your investment, and it pays to keep your tenants happy. BEST MOMENTS 'When you have a void period, you are literally losing money' 'An asset is something that puts money into you pocket, and a liability is something that takes money out' 'It's important to focus and get that property filled as quickly as you can' 'Do not be cheap!' Air New Zealand will fly two non-stop services a week between Auckland and Hobart when a two-way transtasman bubble is started. The airline last flew there 23 years ago and said today the city would be its tenth Australian destination.Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran said the route will be a much-needed economic boost for New Zealand's tourism industry."Our Hobart - Auckland route will open a direct link between 540,000 potential Tasmanian tourists and our biggest city, with regional hot spots like Queenstown and Rotorua a short skip away."Flights would be on Airbus A320neo aicraft and on Thursday and Sunday to make the most of domestic connectivity and provide the best long weekend options for travellers, he said.Foran said that while New Zealand will be a key destination for Tasmanians, the route will open opportunities for Kiwis too."As Australia's second oldest city, Hobart is rich in heritage and its world-famous Museum of Old and New Art mixes antiquities among contemporary art."The state would be popular with Kiwis wanting to enjoy world class art and culture, to the food and wine scene, spectacular landscapes and an abundance of wildlife."Similarly, we know Tasmanians love to visit New Zealand and this direct service to Auckland will make it that much easier to get out into our great outdoors and access our winter playgrounds."Air New Zealand's chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty said all regulatory approval was in place for the flights which take about four hours. The airline - which is operating just 11 per cent of its pre-Covid transtasman services - had been constantly reviewing its network.''The environment we're in now is totallly different and that market was the largest where we're not operating a non-stop flight between Australia and New Zealand,'' she said.''We think it's a great opportunity to open up to those people.''She said hoped the service would be well balanced between Tasmanians coming to New Zealand and vice versa. In 2019 about 60,000 Kiwis visited Tasmania.''We will be marketing on both sides of the Tasman.''Geraghty said there would be financial support from the Tasmanian government but the figure was commercially sensitive.''We're ready to go but it is contingent - tickets will go on sale once the bubble announcement is made.''Fares would be dependent on demand but there would be a ''great range of fares.''An announcement on a two-way bubble could come as early as Monday after several states in Australia have allowed quarantine-free entry for much of the past six months (aside from some community outbreaks here). On Thursday, under mounting pressure to fix a bubble start date, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that would happen "soon" but the Government wanted an arrangement that would stick.Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein says the announcement today of the new non-stop flights to Hobart from New Zealand is a significant opportunity for both destinations."I am very pleased that this service will enable us to welcome more New Zealanders to our state and encourage them to consider booking their next holiday in Tassie and see what we have to offer."Air New Zealand pulled its last Hobart to New Zealand service in 1998 because it wasn't commercially viable. The airline flew between Christchurch and Hobart.

This episode of Potty Mouth is a little different to my usual podcast. In each series I will do 1 'An interview with' episode, where I will talk to someone about something specific they have an interest in or something that effects them personally. In this episode I talk to Grace Liu, a blogger and writer from Loughborough, who opens up to me about being diagnosed with autism at the age of 9. She opens up about how it's affected her throughout her childhood and into her adulthood and the negative stigma around autism. I hope you enjoy!

Runchatlive Ep49: Benno Nigg 'The Science Of Modern Running Shoes'A true honour this episode to spend an hour chatting with special guest for Dr. Benno Nigg. Regarded by many as the important contributor to running related research over the past 40 years, Dr.Nigg is Founder & director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary, a multi-disciplinary Research Center concentrating on the study of the human body and its locomotion. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Olympic Order, honorary degrees from the Universities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and an honorary professorship from the University of Shanghai. In this episode of Runchatlive, he will be discussing the SCIENCE behind modern running shoes. What role have shoes truly played in the performance explosion we have witnessed since Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to break two hours for the marathon. 2019 also brought us twice as many men running under 2:10 and twice as many women under 2:27 compared to 2016. Eight of the twelve fastest men’s marathons in history have been run in the last year. How much of a factor has this new breed of shoe played? And more importantly, what is it in the shoe that could have made this possible? With over 25,000 publications on human locomotion, in particular with relation to products such as orthoses, shoe insoles, sport shoes, surfaces and sport equipment, Dr. Nigg will be giving us an inside look at his latest study that appeared this August in the British Journal of Sports Medicine: 'The teeter-totter effect: A new mechanism to understand shoe-related improvements in long-distance running.'An incredible hour, thank you once again Dr. Benno Nigg for giving us his time. - - - - - - - - - -RUNCHATIVE INTERNATIONAL RUNNING CONFERENCE 2020Oct 29th & 30th - ONLINE!Simultaneous Translation into Spanish!10 fantastic speakers including:Matt Fitzgerald, Kevin Maggs, Ben Cormack, Tom Goom, Alice Sanvito, Claire Minshull, Trevor Prior, Emma Brockwell, Nick Knight & Jess Bruce, Mike James.INFO & TICKETS: http://rcl2020.eventbrite.co.uk/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOIN US FOR FUTURE EPISODES!Runchatlive episodes are recorded LIVE on Thursdays at 8pm (UK time) on our Facebook Page: www.Facebook.com/MattPhillipsRCL. Jackie Komutatsu - Aura (Leisure Music Productions) Release 02 March 2020 Presale https://www.beatport.com/release/aura/2840946 Label: https://soundcloud.com/leisuremusicproductions We are proud to bring to you this epic organic EP called Aura from Jackie Komutatsu including 2 beautiful interpretations from Darksidevinyl and Acado. 'An aura is a collection of electro-magnetic energies of varying densities which are emanating from the physical, vital, etheric, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.' Jackie Komutatsu created 2 versions of his track both of them a journey into deep, tribal and organic deep tech orientated sound. The orginal mix opens up with street noises at an African market and sets the stage for the track's intrinsic sound FX. A deep powerful kick, horn FX and multiple layers of percussive elements as well as a powerful vocals are introduced. Slowely the track starts to build up getting its drive from an open HH and dub Fx, claps and a beautiful oriental melody. Beat, melody, percussion and vocals are carefully intertwined and progress throughout the track in a beautiful symbiosis. The perfect set opener for your organic deep tech set or to kick off your mystic afterhour. The second version of Jackie Komutatsu is an amazing dub version of the original track, concentrating more on the essential strong kick and on those amazing dub sounds, Aura features. Darksidevinyl's interpretation of Aura is a very powerful melodic techno track offering a masterful composition by implementing his signature sound of percussive precision and the creation of multiple strong synths and melodies that progress throughout the track. He kicks it off very subtle with a strong kick and leading sound FX. A moving bass synth progression leads the way accompanied by subtle shakers, percussive elements and dub sound FX to the tracks first break. African vocal chants and FX as well as risers build the track up to its second part, where the track finds its groove. The grand finale is introduced by an implementation of a dramatic violin orchestra and very poweful layered synths. This track is perfect for your peak time melodic techno set. A poweful and unique remix. The second interpretation comes from Acado and is a downtempo remix, focusing on the organic and spiritual elements of the track. Acado starts out with a powerful kick, snare combination and shakers setting the groove for their remix. Vocals, chants and arabic flute as well as an electric guitar are combined to produce a powerful interplay of the different elements. A groovy bassline drives the track forward. The break builds up slowely with the accentuation of multiple sound Fx and vocals elements and synth basslines. A beautiful, mesmerizing but also very strong work of art, made to make you get into your groove. Perfect to open your organic downtempo, deep house or even progressive set.
