Our conversation today is with educator, author, and Director of National Faculty at PBLWorks, Ryan Sprott, about one of the most contentious topics in education today, that is Teaching Contentious Topics in a Divided Nation: A Memoir and Primer for Pedagogical Transformation, which is also the title of his self-published book. In this conversation we be talk about his experience teaching an inquiry approach to teaching contentious topics. In part time project-based inquiry, his students in Texas, of all places, engaged with some of the most difficult open-ended, wicked questions around, as Ryan refers to them, “A question to open hearts and minds”–What is the purpose of a border and what has shaped your answer to this question? How can we improve energy policy and what has shaped your answer to this question? And what is the purpose of school and what has shaped your answer to this question? Students visited the Texas border with Mexico, worked with immigrant aid organizations and hosted dialogue with Border Patrol agents. They visited Texas oil fields to speak with oilmen on the ground, engaged in interviews, documented their experiences in field journals, created collaborative community art projects, and so much more. You'll hear student testimonials about how they came away transformed forever by the experience. Ryan Sprott @ PBLWorksTeaching Contentious Topics in a Divided Nation (Amazon) Hosted on Acast. Since October the 7th we have seen an eruption of support for Palestinian liberation. On university campuses we find both the tremendous growth of activism for Palestine, and repressive and punitive measures that seek to discourage and curtail these activities. One of the most important tasks for activists is to organize broad networks of support. Today we speak with two people who have helped organize a network called National Faculty for Justice in Palestine, which now has close to 100 chapters in the US. Our conversation ranges from the genesis of this group and its goals, to an appreciation of how activism is now crossing boundaries that had formerly separated people in terms of status, rank, and discipline, and created new kinds of communities and energies that are broadly life-affirming and for the liberation of all.Andrew Ross is a social activist and Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU. A contributor to the Guardian, the New York Times, The Nation, Artforum, Jacobin, the London Review of Books, and Al Jazeera, he is the author or editor of 25 books and more than 250 articles on a wide variety of topics including labor and work, urbanism, politics, technology, environmental justice, alternative economics, music, film, TV, art, architecture, and poetry. Politically active in many movement fields, he's the co-founder of several groups: Gulf Labor Artist Coalition, Global Ultra Luxury Faction, Coalition for Fair Labor, Occupy Student Debt Campaign, and is an organizer with others, including the American Association of University Professors and the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. His books include Cars and Jails: Freedom Dreams, Debt, Incarceration; Sunbelt Blues: the Failure of American Housing; Stone Men: the Palestinians who Built Israel, and others.Sherene Seikaly is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a historian of capitalism, consumption, and development in the modern Middle East. Her book, Men of Capital: Scarcity and Economy in Mandate Palestine (Stanford University Press, 2016) examines British-ruled Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s through a focus on economy. In a departure from the expected histories of Palestine, this book illuminates dynamic class constructions that aimed to shape a pan-Arab utopia in terms of free trade, profit accumulation, and private property. And in so doing, it positions Palestine and Palestinians in the larger world of Arab thought and social life, moving attention away from the limiting debates of Zionist–Palestinian conflict. Her current book project follows the trajectory of a peripatetic medical doctor, her great grandfather, to place Palestine in a global history of race, capital, slavery, and dispossession. Sherene Seiklay is an editorial board member of the American Historical Review, co-editor of the Stanford Studies Middle Eastern and Islamic Societies and Cultures Series, co-editor of Journal of Palestine Studies, and co-editor of Jadaliyya.

He was part of the Pulitzer-finalist team that covered the death of Freddie Gray and was twice named a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists, for his coverage of rapes that were being discounted by police and a series inside a homicide investigation. We continue our fascinating conversation with Suzie Boss, National Faculty emeritus for PBLWorks. PBL Works has adapted nearly all of their services to work within an online context because of the pandemic. And while some educators may be unsure if their projects will meet learning objectives, Suzie assures that the essence of project based learning remains intact when taken online. Suzie also shares some powerful examples of remote PBL, and how they connect the learning experience with real-world relevance.
Ben Owens discusses his non-profit "Open Way Learning" and the book he co-authored - Open Up, Education! How Open Way Learning Can Transform Schools. This is episode 339 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Ben Owens is an education strategist and coach with experience helping schools create the cultural conditions that allow authentic, localized innovation to thrive in their own learning communities. He specializes in working with schools to retool their approach to collaboration and the free exchange of ideas and resources by applying the core elements of the open source movement - one of the primary drivers fueling our innovation economy. This “Open Way Learning” approach allows teams to develop, remix, adapt, and sustain a culture of authentic innovation that nimbly responds to the just-in-time needs of each student. Such innovative approaches include competency-based learning, project-based learning, distributed leadership, design thinking, true personalized learning, and high-quality STEM teaching & learning - all implemented with fidelity and sustained for the long term because they are rooted in the DNA of a school’s culture (instead of being short lived fads). As an engineer who spent a 20-year career in manufacturing locations across the US, Ben saw first-hand the essential need to rethink student success so that it was less focused on siloed curriculum and test scores and more focused on the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed for students to thrive in a rapidly changing world. He left the corporate world in 2007 to do something about this by becoming a public school teacher in Southern Appalachia. Ben taught physics and math for 11 years at Tri-County Early College and in that role was able to work with a dynamic team of peers to craft and scale an engaging approach to student-centered teaching and learning that blurs the lines between what happens in school and what happens in the real world. Ben is the co-author of “Open Up, Education! How Open Way Learning Can Transform Schools,” a book that makes a compelling case for why our schools must be more open if they are to truly prepare students for a rapidly changing world. He was the recipient of the 2017 Bridging the Gap Distinguished Teacher in STEM Education; the 2016 North Carolina Center for Science, Mathematics, & Technology Outstanding 9-16 Educator Award; a member of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Teacher Advisory Council; a 2014 Hope Street Group National Teaching Fellow, and a former “Community TA” for the MIT Teaching Systems Lab. He is currently an Open Organization Ambassador and is a National Faculty member for PBLWorks, the world leader in Project Based Learning. He and his wife live in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Lots to learn today! It would be awesome if you left a review and subscribed or shared with others. Thanks for listening! EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and ReprocessingUnlike other forms of psychological disorders, the core issue in trauma is reality.- Bessel A. van der Kolk - The Body Keeps ScoreUnlocking The Past With EMDRFarnsworth Lobenstine is a clinical social worker living in Amherst, MA. He's an Approved Consultant for the EMDR International Association. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is one of 3 therapies approved internationally for the treatment of PTSD - to embrace events, to master them, from the dark halls of the past. Because it treats the body-mind, and not just the thinking-brain [the part that is the primary focus/objective for talk therapy], it has also proven to be very useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and many other psychological disorders. EMDR has proven to be an effective treatment for complex trauma and dissociative identity disorder when appropriately modified. He trained in EMDR in 1999 and served on the National Faculty of the EMDR Institute since 2001. This interview is quite compelling and adds considerably to options for resolving past trauma. He's experienced, intelligent and reasonably opinionated - an excellent mix! Don't miss Farnsworth - love that name! Personal Ed. Note: The use of EMDR treatments remain so frequently overlooked. Although I don't provide EMDR myself as a therapist, I've worked with numerous well trained EMDR practitioners and certified EMDR trainers since 2003, and find it remarkably, indeed pervasively useful in everyday psychotherapy practice. This 166 CBJ Episode doesn't entirely cover the fact that this technique works for adolescents as well - more on that specific age range coming later.
