Anthony, a former Marine, shares his journey from a focus on fitness to a broader concern for health, triggered by his father's struggle with brain cancer. Following his service, he needed to support his family and turned his passion for fitness into a means of income. This led him to co-found Fitt Insider, one of the best media companies in the space of fitness, which started as a newsletter. Anthony and his brother built Fitt Insider initially as a side project. They began by sharing their unique perspective on the fitness industry through a monthly newsletter, which rapidly grew in popularity. The company's offering expanded to include a podcast and a free jobs board, all centered on providing valuable, actionable content to fitness industry professionals. Their commitment to consistency and value creation has resulted in a deeply engaged community that trusts and relies on Fitt Insider. He also shares his thoughts on the future of gyms and wearables. According to him, the key to successful gyms is creating a community that engages people in functional, accessible workouts. On wearables, while acknowledging the potential of such technology, he emphasizes its need to connect with people's lives in meaningful, affordable ways. Anthony advocates for focusing on helping average individuals who are struggling rather than catering to a small, high-performing, or affluent audience. And if you enjoyed our conversation, you know what to do – rate and review! If you asked 1999 Kristen what the future of fitness looked like, she would have shamelessly stolen tropes from Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. Workouts led by a holographic fitness instructor, pick-up games of anti-gravity basketball, and silver scrunchies holding our hair in space buns were all BOUND to be in place by 2049. And if we got to do our fitness from an international space station, all the better.Well, we're about halfway between the point where Zenon came out, in 1999, and when it takes place in 2049. Seems like a great time to check in on the future of fitness, right? In our final episode on our deep dive on the history of fitness, we bring on Anthony Vennare, CEO and co-founder of Fitt and an active investor in the fitness space. As the curator of the Fitt Insider newsletter, Anthony spends a significant amount of time exploring everything from the resurgence of magic mushrooms to healthcare funded fitness; I consistently open his newsletter to scrounge for new wellness brands and get a mini-deep dive on a niche wellness topic. After all, as Anthony points out in this episode, “everything is wellness” – and the future of fitness includes more than just trending workouts.Anthony and his brother and co-founder, Joe, also invest in early-stage companies across health, wellness, fitness & nutrition. Their portfolio companies include some big names: Balanced, obe fitness, Future, Superset and more. In this episode, you'll hear Anthony talk through his top four future of fitness predictions: outdoor recreation, accountability as a service, services and apps to help you age well, and how companies can monetize habit and behavior change. We get into our shared passion for pickleball, the allure of wellness retirement communities, and the gamification of fitness. It might not be what Zenon had envisioned, but in our eyes, the future of fitness is still pretty fascinating.Links and resourcesFind Anthony on TwitterCatch up on Fitt Insider and subscribe herePrevious Fitt Insider newsletters in which Anthony goes more in-depth on topics we discuss in this episode:Issue No. 117: Aging WellIssue No. 154: Recreation's RenaissanceIssue No. 164: What's Trending in 2022Issue No. 169: Fitness Comes Full CircleListen to the Fitt Insider podcastOur 2019 interview with Anthony

Due to some minor technical difficulties and the fact that we are meticulously un-produced, you get to hear a whole ~11minutes and 14 seconds (11:14) of us two talking about Metaverse and our travel plans before our awesome guest Anthony Vennare joined us. Anthony went from a Marine to a serial entrepreneur in the fitness industry along with his brother Joe Vennare and now both are founders of Fitt Insider which is a mix of fitness, content and investment into the industry. We chatted about:

"The right thing is always the right thing." That quote is inscribed on the wall at Fitt's headquarters in Pittsburgh where brothers Anthony and Joe Vennare built their location-based wellness discovery empire. And, more importantly, it drives every decision the company makes. I spoke to Anthony Vennare, CEO and co-founder of Fitt for this week's episode of #WeGotGoals at the absolute perfect moment: just after Fitt closed a fundraising round that included MINDBODY's participation as a strategic investor. This, Anthony explained, was a big goal for the company from the moment it started to build what Fitt is today. As an outsider, it's been fun to watch Fitt grow, innovate and help wellness-minded people discover new healthy experiences. But after speaking to Anthony, it would be impossible not to root for him - he's relentless, hardworking, disciplined and grounded. You'll hear that shine on today's episode - it explains much of the company's success. On this episode: 2:15: Anthony explains Fitt in his own words, describing the location-based platform that's in more than 30 global cities. 3:15: Anthony talks about his childhood, his first job cutting grass and why he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 - noting that his dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer just after he left for training. 6:41: Anthony shares how he, his brother and a team of friends converted a 12,000 square foot indoor skate park into a gym and how they were able to rent it for $1,500/month. At 21-years-old, he built a business and scaled that to 40 locations and a proprietary certification program called Kettlebell Cardio. 8:20: Anthony shares how he and his brother Joe decided to sell the gym and move into online media - keeping their eyes on Eater, Infatuation and Thrillist and deciding to build something similar for fitness and healthy living. 11:15: Anthony talks about Fitt's strategic partnership with MINDBODY - a relationship that took two years to build. 13:00: Anthony describes the unique positioning of Fitt in smaller markets like Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. 14:00: Anthony shares his secret to success - "I am just exhausting" and also talks about how his industry-facing content from Fitt Insider helped in getting his first meeting with MINDBODY. 16:45: Anthony teases the big vision for how Fitt's content will impact users of MINDBODY 17:30: Anthony speaks to the future of Fitt, including making the product the best it can be and his aspirations for potential acquisitions to truly reach a huge audience. 19:30: Anthony shares that about 30 percent of FITT's audience is made up of people who are traveling and what Fitt's building to empower that audience. 22:00: Anthony talks about what it's like working with his brother and how he lives way within his means and simply (he rides a vespa and doesn't own a car, by the way). 25:00: Anthony talks about he and his brother's unique take on business: creating companies that "fill voids in other companies." I love meeting people who beat the odds. Anthony Vennare was supposed to be a “dumb jock”. He wasn’t supposed to open a gym and find profitability within 2 months. He wasn’t supposed to raise millions of dollars to get more people working out. He wasn’t supposed to sign deals with massive healthcare companies and turn the world of digital content writing on its head. Luckily, no one told him. Today, Anthony is the co-founder and CEO of Fitt – a media and technology company that connects people to local health and fitness activities. They’ve got big plans for the future and anyone in the content & branding game needs to study what they’re doing. I got him for 40 minutes over the weekend and hustled to get this episode out ASAP because it got me so fired up. Hope you enjoy it. Attend my one-day conference January 27th in Pittsburgh.
