We've been talking about electrification of the maintenance fleet for some time now and the conversation always turns to the challenges facing the rollout of this technology particularly when it comes to winter maintenance. Diminished load carrying capacity due to the weight of the batteries, battery performance in cold operating environments, range anxiety, and the lack of rapid charging infrastructure re just a few. Well, Edison Motors Ltd based in Merritt, British Columbia has found the answer to these challenges and are in the process of developing a plugin hybrid electric snowplow for Emcon Services Inc, the largest maintenance contractor in Canada. Frank Rizzardo, President of Emcon Services is here along with the founders of Edison Motors, Chace Barber and Eric Little to tell us all about their plugin hybrid electric snowplow project. check out the progress of the hybrid snowplow build and other vocational trucks Edison Motors have built on their YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@EdisonMotors. Long Beach City Council approved a $500,000 settlement for Laupua. The second settlement was made with Eva Vallin who fractured her ankle in multiple potholes outside of a supermarket. This fracture caused Vallin to develop the neurological condition Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. The jury awarded her a settlement of $17.5 million. On Wednesday, Nov. 27 at around 7 p.m. a woman was struck and killed by a Long Beach transit bus. The accident happened on Shoreline Drive where the road merges into the 710 freeway. The woman passed away on the scene and the police have ruled out speed, distracted driving and impaired driving as potential causes of the accident. This Thanksgiving, a multitude of Democrat and Republican politicians were targeted with bomb threats and swatting attacks. Five of Trump's cabinet appointees as well as five congressmen from the state of Connecticut all received bomb threats at their family residences. Thankfully, everyone was unharmed and no explosives were detonated or found in any of the homes. The famous Parisian Notre Dame Cathedral was destroyed in a fire five years ago in 2019. National is labelling the Government's new transport strategy as "absolute madness". The plan –which is still being worked on– puts climate change as the top priority and dictates where tens of billions of dollars will be spent in the next three years. It will go out for consultation this year. The proposed changes will see two billion dollars of maintenance money spent on the likes of bus lanes and cycleways, rather than fixing potholes. National Transport Spokesperson Simeon Brown told Kate Hawkesby that money for maintenance should be spent on just that. He says we have potholes peppering our highways and those need fixing, rather than work being done on cycleways. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There is a simple reason for why the continued rise in crude oil prices seems to be going against economic norms; the evolving approach to better protect your data; and a trucking paradox - more trucks, worse roads.
The pandemic, the continued rise of ecommerce and the general recovery of the US economy has increased the demand for all kinds of goods. With trucking moving 70 percent of all the cargo in the United States, increased demand means increased trucking. But there is a problem - all that tonnage on the nation's highways, byways and surface streets are exacting a toll on the already crumbling infrastructure. Years of underfunding by states and municipalities means that many will be starting from a place of deficit when the federal money from the Infrastructure Bill is distributed.
The cost of required maintenance on Queensland's state controlled roads has climbed by more than $400m in just one year, with dozens of bridges and culverts on structure safety plans. A major surf lifesaving body is blacking out its website after a shocking new report showed that a drowning happened every second day on Australian beaches over summer on average. A timeline to vaccinate all Australians against COVID-19 has been thrown overboard by the Prime Minister, who now says it's impossible to set a target for when the country will be vaccinated. Many agencies have been collecting a lot of data, GPS/AVL coordinates, RWIS, mobile observations, photos and the like. Now comes the time to ask So What? Until you do something with it its just a bunch of 1s and zeros occupying peta bytes of space. There are however great opportunities to mine these data and turn it into information that can help transportation agencies manage the system and their operations. One agency, the Iowa DOT, has take that leap and demonstrated success in turning all that data in useful information. Tina Greenfield, Iowa DOTs RWIS Coordinator, shares their experiences in working with Big Data.
If you share a driveway with neighbors, you might have a private road maintenance agreement . . . or not. Here are some things to think about.
Agencies have been using salt brines and a variety of other liquid concoctions for years as a winter maintenance strategy. Pre-wetting stockpiles, pre-wetting at the spinner, slurries, direct application for anti-icing have been tried and true practices. Now some have taken the use of liquids to the max , and now, utilizing direct liquid applications through the course of the storm. Some would say using liquid only routes are a risky proposition throughout the storm although some states and countries abroad have been successfully running field trials with liquid only routes. Jim Hughes, State Maintenance Engineer with the Wisconsin DOT is talking winter ops with SICOP about their experience with liquid only routes.
