Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic in the business world over the last year. Some of it has been really interesting, and some has been just hype. But in the field of sustainable agriculture, where we already work with massive volumes of data, there are some A.I. applications that could provide real value to growers. So in this episode, we meet Dr. Nathan Boyd, the Associate Director of the University of Florida Gulf Coast Research and Education Center. He's helping develop Florida's state-funded Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence, and with a background in agriculture and weed control, knows that new technology has to create a clear value for growers if it's going to succeed. We'll discuss how A.I. is different from other new technologies in agriculture, how it could be used to create value, and why it could be a game-changer for sustainability.

Responsible Management - University of Bradford School of Management

ChatGPT certainly has a great public relations department. It is portrayed as the answer to every conceivable problem for the beleaguered federal technology professional. Today, we sit down with a group of experts in what may be termed “Applied Artificial Intelligence.” We look at several aspects, including preparing your data for AI, the best applications for AI, and putting up guardrails to use AI safely. Mangala Kuppa from the Department of Labor indicates that every use case is unique. If one data set can yield valid results does not mean the results will be the same with another data set. In her experience, every use case will require you to do a bit more to ensure satisfactory results. Kurt Steege from Thundercat Technology catches the attention of the listener when he lists malicious code that has been enabled by AI. He refers to Dark Bard, Poison GPT, and Deep Fakes as examples of how malicious actors are using AI to attack. It is no wonder that the best tool to counter AI attacks is . . .  AI itself. For example, an AI attack enables such speed that a human may not be able to stop it. Julian Zottl indicates that we may not have a choice to whether or not to use AI in defense. When the interview winds up, the participants agree that AI should be framed within a broader context of the technology system itself. Reliable & trusted results from AI are not just technical solutions. They include governance, alignment with agency goals, and accountability.

In this episode I am delighted to introduce  Tal Brown CEO and Co-founder at Zone7. Tal has a background in computer science and systems engineering and began his career as a big data engineer in the Israel Defense Force. He subsequently became a senior director of product management at Salesforce where he founded the organisation's first AI product team  responsible for data science applications used by millions of sales professionals.        Since 2017 at  Zone 7 he has been developing and and applying proprietary artificial intelligence to assist athletes, coaches and medical teams forecast injury risk and attain peak performance.  More recently the focus  has expanded to include other disciplines outside sport, including healthcare and the military, where machine learning tools could be used to assist in optimising  performance and protecting the wellbeing of the workforce.        In this conversation Tal breaksdown what artificial intelligence actually is and discusses its use to date in  the elite and amateur sporting environment.  We then discuss what this might look like when applied to other elite workers and professional environments with a particular emphasis on healthcare where early adopters are starting to use and apply this technology.     Themes of workforce performance , wellbeing and increasing rates of exhaustion and burnout are revisited through a technical lens.  Ironically I left this conversation feeling that a role for  objectivity might actually be a constructive solution to increasing pressure and demand in the workplace where subjective and intuitive basic needs of workers are often overridden by virtue of environment and system.        We discuss data privacy and application for individuals, teams and organisations.  Tal gives us an articulate account of his vision for the future of this agile and adaptable technology, which is informative not prescriptive,  as a predictive tool to assist athletes and elite workers protecting health, performance and longevity of practice. You’re taking advantage of the benefits of AI every day in ways you might not even be aware of. When you “talk” to an automated voice on the other end of the phone, when you call a Lyft or an Uber, and when you’re asking Siri or Alexa to play your favorite song while you wash dishes. AI is everywhere, and its uses are expanding rapidly. With the application of any new technology, there’s always a period of time during which kinks that creators didn’t plan for become visible. As new systems gain traction, those unaccounted for faults can become amplified, creating patterns, which in turn can start to erode trust. One example of this when it comes to AI is how racial and gender biases that the technology was actually built to avoid can creep into the decision-making process. Another is how the AI-based algos in social media amplify extreme views and keep us all in our filter bubbles, too often fostering division. To better broadly consider the effects of such systems, it’s perhaps useful to first understand how they work – by building upon their own intelligence, collecting information from our cues and habits. We all collectively create AI in our clicks and swipes, often without considering how the data will be used by bots and algos to make decisions. In order to make this technology work well, and work well for everyone, we need to map out the channels of its proverbial brain. Our guests today are Mohsen Rezayat and Ron Bodkin. Rezayat is our Chief Solutions Architect here at Siemens Digital Industries Software. Bodkin spent the past few years as Technical Director of Applied Artificial Intelligence at Google. Currently, he’s the Vice President of AI Engineering and CIO at Vector Institute and Engineering Lead at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.
