Terence Nislow's powerful story might be exactly what you need to hear.In this episode Terence shares with host Arthi that when he realized his prestigious job with amazing benefits was slowly changing who he was as a person, he faced a difficult truth many of us encounter but few discuss openly. Drawing on his Lean Six Sigma background, he created what he called the "Get Terry Back" project – complete with Gantt charts, milestones, and actionable steps that transformed an overwhelming situation into manageable progress. This strategic exit plan helped him overcome the golden handcuffs of excellent benefits and find his way to true workplace happiness.Beyond sharing his personal journey, Terence offers practical wisdom for anyone feeling stuck in a similar situation. His advice spans from seeking trusted support and journaling to exploring options and creating structured exit strategies. Most importantly, he reminds us that "no job is worth your mental health" and "walking away from something toxic isn't a sign of failure – it's a sign of strength."Terence and his wife now help others navigate similar challenges through their business, Your Project Mentor, offering practical tools and emotional support to those feeling trapped in toxic work environments. On December 18, 1994, twenty-seven-year-old Alison Botha was abducted from the parking lot of her apartment in Port Elizabeth by two men she didn't know and had never seen. After forcing her into her car, her abductors drove her to a remote field, where she was sexually assaulted, stabbed dozens of times, nearly decapitated, and left for dead.Miraculously, Alison didn't die in that field, but instead managed to get to a nearby road, where she found help and was transported to the nearest hospital where she received life-saving treatment. Because she remembered everything about her attackers, Alison was able to describe the men and they were quickly arrested and confessed to the assault. Since enduring her horrific attack, Alison Botha has become a symbol of endurance and for decades her story of survival has inspired and empowered young women across South Africa and around the world.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesMarianne, Thamm. 2018. In episode 11 of Season 3, Arthi is joined by Al Dea, one of the newest Tasha10 members. Arthi and Al discuss finding your voice and learning how to use it to speak up for yourself.Al shares how early in his career he received a surprisingly less-than-positive performance review, even though he thought he was excelling. It was only after sharing his thoughts with a manager that he learned that while working hard and doing your job was important, it's equally necessary to speak up and advocate for yourself. It was this experience that taught Al the building blocks of standing out and advocating for yourself to be seen as a leader and to be even more effective inside your organisation. Al elaborates on why it is so challenging for people to find their voice, one of the reasons being leaders who are not creating the space for people to feel secure and confident in sharing their voice. Al details how he started connection meetings with like-minded people which allowed him to meet colleagues but more importantly created an opportunity to be noticed and heard. Al explains how when you first start using your voice it may seem that no one is listening but he encourages us all to not be fixate on this and push through this challenge, focus on the journey, and overcome the fear. Some wise words from Al:“I really only think that authenticity is the way and doing it in a way that is unique to you”“if you're going to think and catastrophize about what the worst thing that happens is you're also going to have to play out the scenario. Dorm life is a quintessential part of the American university experience, but that wasn't always the case. In this episode, I outline the history of dormitories and share an edited version of my conversation with Arthi Krishnamoorthy, Senior Principal at TenBerke, to discuss the firm's residential college project on the Princeton campus. After three years of attending Zoom school, college students are setting records for on-campus housing demand. Mixed with the ever-rising rent prices in college towns, many universities are reimagining the traditional dorm model to accommodate the crowds. Arthi is working closely with the stakeholders at Princeton to ensure the new multi-building dormitory complex enhances student well-being, integrates living environments, and fosters a sense of community and responsibility. Located strategically on the edge of campus in a woodland area, the two new residential colleges consist of eight new buildings that house approximately 1,000 students. Each building features a transparent base that encourages community involvement through visibility and encompasses a contemporary style to the rest of the campus. Princeton's ten-year plan aims to significantly increase the undergraduate student population as well as their living and dining hall options on campus. Arthi explains how symbolic and detailed architecture ensures that students will be overcome with a sense of discovery and community through this new endeavor. Note: New College East has since been renamed Yeh College since this episode was originally recorded.About the Guest:Arthi Krishnamoorthy is a Senior Principal at TenBerke, which is the new name of Deborah Berke Partners, the NYC-based design firm. In Season 3 episode 9, Arthi is joined by fellow Forbes Coaches Council member Lara Augusta, founder of Embracing Potentiality, talking about undoing complicated narratives. Lara opens up about her family & childhood where experiences led her to create a narrative in her mind of being an inconvenience and not belonging. This mindset stemmed from having to keep a massive family secret for her whole life and Lara goes into detail about how her family dynamic impacted her journey.Lara has always had a natural curiosity in learning & connecting with people from different countries & cultures, so it is no surprise that her world travels began at the tender age of 15 when she had convinced her father to allow her to attend schooling in the UK for a year. This was the first time that Lara was able to simply be herself and make her own choices. As we round out the year 2022 with Episode 18 Arthi invites guest Andrew Tallents to share his journey of designing his life so that it may inspire your own planning for 2023 and beyond. Having grown up in very modest circumstances, Andrew learned about putting in hard work in order to achieve success. At age 15 he took on the responsibility of the household, which brought out feelings of loyalty and duty, as well as resentment for missing out on childhood. As a result of this, behaviours played out for Andrew in his adult life where key relationships suffered because of the need to achieve. This went on for about 30 years until 6 years ago he was enlightened about coaching and what it could do for others. Due to Andrews natural disposition to assist and support others, this necessitated a shift for him to design his life away from doing, to being, and to, of course, enable others to do so too. Some wise words from Andrew:"Stop, and reflect, and just ask the question around who am I really being, right now”"to go from doing to being you need to create some space in your life and ask yourself what you would actually like your life to be like”“When we try to change but we cant, just be kind to ourselves”Listen in to the full episode for so much more insights and ideas offered by my wonderful guest.About Andrew Tallents:Andrew is Managing Partner at the Tallents partnership, and has over twenty five years' experience in delivering a wide range of human capital solutions to a variety of organisations. Arthi Morekonda is a Quality Assurance Test Engineer at Konabos. In this episode, Arthi talks about growing up in India, family, food, medicine, teaching, technology, emigrating to Northern California, and so much more.
In Episode 17 of Season 2, Arthi and guest Dr Saba Hasanie explore the richness and beauty to be found in identity, even though it may be a difficult journey at times.Saba lives in Singapore now but was born and grew up in Canada, into what she calls a confusing context because of being unclear on where she belonged. Born to a spiritual Pakistani mum and highly academic Indian father, in a Canada of 50 years ago where people of colour were few and far between, she had to quickly learn to try and find her identity between being of Indian heritage and of a more western context. There were boxes she couldn't fit in to, not quite desi enough, not quite Canadian enough, with her peers (due to different language, food and background). This confusion led to the creation of self-protective mechanisms to always take control of the context in her search for a sense of belonging and to be liked. It has been both a fulfilling and painful journey across transitions of identities. Saba's key lessons are rooted in the idea of multiplicity and that we can and do identify across our multiple roles successfully by reminding ourselves we just need to be good enough and to be empathetic to ourselves as we navigate and transition across roles. Some wise words from Saba: - "We do hold these multiple and often conflicting identities within us and that is also our beauty and charm that makes us what is uniquely us."" We don't have to have answers, we just have to have the ability to be present with the whole spectrum of emotions that these transitions create."Identity is not steel, its not forged in fire, it does not have to be static, instead it is something that has movement to it."Listen in to the full episode for so much more insights and ideas offered by my wonderful guest.About Saba Hasanie:Saba is the founder and Managing Director of OSC Leadership Performance. She is an executive coach, coach supervisor, practitioner-scholar and of course entrepreneur. In episode 16 of Season 2, Arthi has an inspiring conversation with guest Sara Gilbert about living life to your own rules. Sara shares her fascination about wanting to know what makes someone take action. From a young age she challenged everything that came her way, including her parents beliefs. Eventually, everything exploded in her life at once because she knew there was more and she needed to thrive. In a span of two years she let go of her marriage and job. She realised her recipe to make good decisions needed to take effect at that particular point, it was an accumulation over time of course, but in the end, she was able to use that updated recipe to create a life she loves living and thriving in, by defining it, finding an anchor and being curious. Some wise words from Sara:- "There are 3 ways people go through life. They survive life, …there's people who live life….and there are people who thrive life”-"what I want to do, is actually what I am supposed to do”- “Focus not on the lack thereof…instead feed the dream”Listen to the full episode to hear more and be inspired by my guest.About Sara Gilbert:Sara is an Award-winning Business Strategist & Mindset Coach as well as a Keynote Speaker. In Episode 11 of Season 2 Arthi has a motivating discussion with Cheryl Czach about how powerful the YES Mindset is not only for ourselves but others too.Cheryl started off with an unconventional career path, where for example, college was not in her path after graduating from high school. Instead she started working, got a part time job in an office as a receptionist and was offered the opportunity to train in accounting and join the accounts department. She said yes to it and that led to another opportunity, a little while later to be in the HR function, where she realised she loved it and wanted to grow her career there. Digging into this allowed her to study for Bachelors and MBA, in her 30s. She became VP of a tier 1 automotive firm and elevated her career into the senior exec level, overseeing many different functional areas that she knew nothing about but had a willingness to learn and try. None of these would have happened if she doubted her ability and that is the premise of the yes mindset, to be open to the potential opportunity, rather than stumble on the perceived challenge. She hares some of the practices and reflective questions to take on opportunities and reconnect with our instinct again. Some wise words shared by Cheryl: -“Yes is where the growth is.” - “If I'm scared, if it makes me feel nervous, then I am on the right path.” - “Take the opportunity, take the chance, go for growth.”Listen to the full episode to hear more from my wonderful guest.About Cheryl Czach:As a business leader, Cheryl Czach has been guiding professionals through their work and life journeys for over 20 years. In Episode 6 of this season, Arthi has an insightful conversation with Leang about how we need to raise our self-awareness as solopreneur.Leang shares how she was someone who always had to do things first in her family, being a role model to cousins and one of the eldest in her generation, she set the bar of what they could consider doing and achieving. It's quite a responsibility to shoulder of course, and it is very typical of many Asian communities for this to happen. Leang had always had that entrepreneurial spirit and keen on #business, so after 15+ years in the #peoplemanagement and #talent space, she opted to give her own business a go by leveraging her experience and monetising it. Two things offered her security to embark on this journey: a long runway of capital to be able to sustain her lifestyle should things take longer than planned to work out, and confidence in her expertise, backed by experience, to be able to secure a good role again, should she need to return to corporate employment. From her initial focus area not being successful to being pleasantly surprised about how her new target market emerged, from lessons around self-awareness and creating a personal brand, to working with key support structures as needed to amplify her message and be unique and authentic in her business, Leang is journeying through it all and offer emerging solopreneurs and those of us in the trenches, some practical ideas of what to do, of ways to grow and own our awareness of what happens to us and our business. She advocates for us, from her own experience, to be open to change when needed and pay attention to opportunities when they present themselves so they aren't missed. Some wise words from Leang: - "Being a solopreneur is the best way to get to know about you, because the buck always stops with you" - " Be open to what the market is telling you and listen to how you are responding" - "Give yourself that permission that you are a human being and that that was the best decision you could have made in that moment". I am joined today by our guest Arthi Krishnamoorthy and we discuss topics of the two new Residential Colleges that her team has designed at Princeton University, including strategies she implements to help make university buildings feel more like home for students that are coming from near and far. Additionally, we discuss the topics of how to integrate inside and outside to connect the colleges to the site and to the landscape, how to create designs that transform architectural spaces into homes for students and how she has addressed the impact of COVID-19 while building on-campus housing. The Princeton residential colleges, which Arthi and her firm are currently designing, accommodate an additional 125 students per class along with new social spaces, a dining hall, and servery. The 485,000-square-foot project allows for an overlapping relationship between the indoors and outdoors by creating an “in-between space” that includes several passageways, courtyards and thresholds in the design. Arthi shares with us the specific tools and strategies she uses when building dormitory projects, such as this one.If you are interested in learning more, we will share some of Deborah Berke Partner's most complex projects that connect design-thinking to their missions. On this episode, Arthi has a meaningful conversation with Sahar Andrade about how growing up in 7 different countries as a child was laden with both negative and positive experiences. On the positive side, she met people who were so diverse, that she became accepting and non-judgemental of who they were. Thus very open-minded as a child. On the negative side, it created a lack of real connection with people, aided by a heightened self-awareness of her weight. She shares a personal story of how at 10 years old, her excess weight caused her to not be permitted to participate in a dance show that she really wanted to. This incident shaped her life by creating her fear of being embarrassed, ridiculed, let down, not being liked, and of rejection. In her words “name the fear and I probably subscribed to it.” And this fear exacerbated the lack of connection with others. The fear settled inside her, and she wanted to become invisible to the world. Fearfulness controlled her life until 3rd year of medical school, where she had had enough of fear taking over her life and defining her path in life. During a summer break, with the support of her dad, she took a job at PanAm, as a first step towards doing something on her own, breaking the chain link of fear-based decision-making. This experience also bolstered her courage to go to the US after completing medical school, to live life on her own terms.Being fearless is about having the courage to face fear in spite of fear, says Sahar. Sahar believes one must have a healthy boundary with fear to actually excel and not be complacent. She shares some ideas of how one can make fear a friend through negative visualisation, and reverse the equation. Positive narrative and gratitude makes us happy so make that the new habit!“Embrace, claim, name and reinvent” says Sahar! So much of what we believe we can do is wrapped up in what society and our family tells us we are able to do. When someone is trying to straddle two cultures at the same time, the list of acceptable behaviors is often compounded and conflicting. In this episode Arthi speaks about the need to understand and fortify one's emotional resilience to cope with stress, anxiety, frustration, guilt, but also to be able to be truly empathetic, and offer kindness. In a world where words and actions can be easily misunderstood or misrepresented, showing emotion can become a double-edged sword. Thus the perceived judgement by others is what leads most people down the path of finding some neutral ground of managing how they show emotion. It is far from ideal and creates distance, weakens mental agility and stifles social supporting mechanisms. Arthi outlines a 5 step process to relaunch and begin building your emotional resilience: Awareness → Feel → Insight → Action/Will → Solidify. If you enjoyed this episode, then do rate, write a review and share with others. COVID-19's disastrous impacts are obvious: a quarter million deaths in the U.S., millions of jobs lost and a financial downturn that prompted a $2 trillion economic stimulus. These impacts are front and center in the public consciousness, especially as people mourn lost loved ones and worry about how lost wages threaten their ability to pay rent. But what about two, three or four decades down the line? What will be the long-lasting effects of the pandemic on individuals' health and finances — and the economy as a whole? Vellore Arthi, an assistant professor of economics at UCI, has examined the long-term health and economic consequences of previous pandemics and financial crises, including the Black Death of the 14th century, the 1918 influenza pandemic and the Great Depression of the 1930s. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, Arthi discusses what these previous pandemics and downturns can teach us about today's crisis — and how we can prevent the worst results.

She has worn many hats – as a wife, a mother of two children who she and Arun have made significant compromises to bring up thoughtfully, a Gynecologist in Agra – and in Germany and now working as the Chief Business officer of Asia operations at WBS Training helping skilled workers from Asia to find work in Germany. You can learn about her at (https://wbstraining.in/ ). This episode is extra special as I could get Teju to drop in as a co-host with me. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/epistle91/message
