Known for her famous memoirs, Maya Angelou's life has been riddled with lessons and accomplishments that could fill multiple lives, including being the first female train operator, a dancer, an actor, an author, a poet, the first black woman on the quarter, the first black women to recite poetry at a presidential inauguration and even had her likeness and name used for a barbie doll. She has also been honored with Grammy's, a lifetime achievement award, a Spingard medal, a Pulitzer prize, two NCAPP awards, numerous poetry awards, almost 50 honorary degrees, and even the presidential medal of freedom. You do not want to miss a second of this episode; it was quite interesting and revealing. Today on The Neoliberal Round Podcast we present another “Street Vibes: Pulse of the Street” where we stumbled on an amazing group called the “Ausar Auset Society” followers and teachers of Kamitic Spirituality and Culture. The interviews were quite revealing and we also learned about Bamba Ra aka Sha'Heed Muhammad who recently died and is being celebrated as an iconic black revolutionary from Philadelphia who graduated from Howard University and was involved in the Student Non-violent Action Coordinating Committee (SNCC), The Revolutionary Action Movement and the Nation of Islam; and was a frequent contributor to the Journal of Black Poetry. Importantly I raise a concern at the beginning of the episode as a preface saying that I do a compulsory course at Georgetown University as part of the Doctoral Studies Program in Liberal Studies where we are expected to do a course called DLS Foundations 1, 2, 3 and 4: where we look at the foundational history of civilization especially that of the West and to an extent the East. These studies, particularly Foundation 1, looks at our foundation by studying Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and Europe, with a few reference made to Eastern China, Russia or India. But nowhere do we look at Egyptian/African history and ideologies and how they also form part of the understanding and development of our civilizations. I explore in brief before revealing the interview as a backdrop and as a concern that I must continue to bring before the academics at Georgetown and those running the DLS program. I then delve into the interviews largely with High Priest Shekhem Ma'a Kheru Men Metu who unveils the concept, practice, culture and spirituality of Kamit and the Ausar Auset Society's role in re-popularizing, teaching and facilitating this traditional and historical culture and spirituality that has been somewhat incorporated in today but without its totality and wholeness. We also interviewed Priest Rameneikhi about the society's impact and reach and touched on Bamba Ra. We connected with others on the ground and listened to the youngsters as they were practicing their drumming which oils be heard throughout the Interviews with the High Priests or Shkhems. The Ausar Society is International with chapters all over the world. This interview was conducted at the Pennsylvania Chapter located at 6008 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia Pennsylvania 19144. The Society can be reached at 215-843-0900. Visit their website at www.ausarausetpa.com. They have RA Qi Gong classes and opportunities for learning about Kamitic Spirituality Sunday at 5:00pm where they teach Introduction to Kamitic Spirituality. Poetry For All

Lucille Clifton (1936-2010) was one of the most powerful poets of the twentieth century. This joyful poem caps a sequence of sixteen poems called "some jesus," which walks through biblical characters (beginning with Adam and Eve) and ends on four poems for Holy Week and Easter. She wrote other poems on the Bible as well, including "john (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/54586/john-56d2351ad543b)" and "my dream about the second coming (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46667/my-dream-about-the-second-coming)," which reimagine a way into biblical characters to make their stories fresh. Clifton wrote from the perspective of a Black woman and many of her most famous poems address race and gender. Clear-eyed about struggles and hardships, insistent in her calls for justice and equality, Clifton's poetry carries a consistent joy and hope, which is apparent (and abundant) in "spring song." Clifton's poetry was known for its lean style, paring everything down to its essential elements. In addition to award-winning collections of poetry, Clifton also wrote sixteen books for children (and had six children herself). For the text of "spring song," and for a recording of Lucille Clifton reading it, see The Poetry Foundation (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/54587/spring-song-56d2351b45223). Image: John Biggers, Band of Angels: Weaving the Seventh Word, 1992-93 According to the Dogon, “in the beginning before anything existed there was the Supreme Being, Amma. Amma existed in the form of an egg divided into four parts by four bones [the clavicles], which were joined together. Apart from the egg, nothing existed, for Amma rested on nothing. The four arts of the egg represented the four elements: water, air, fire, and Earth. So, the fundamental elements already existed in the egg in embryo form. In the egg Amma had designed the world before it was created” [51]. Ultimately, Amma created the world through the creation of the signs and likewise will destroy it through the destruction of the signs …” [53]. We share this creation story, in part, for a number of reasons, but primarily because it is aligned with the assertion in Chukwunyere Kamalu's, The Word at Face Value: An Abridged Account of Dogon cosmology, that “mainstream scholarship on the cosmological world of the Dogon of Mail in West Africa, has become a battleground over what an African people can and cannot know” [11]. Dr. Nubia Kia asserts that, “myths in Africa are similar to what Joseph Campbell calls “living myths.” He uses living myths to distinguish them from the connotative usage of myth meaning “a lie.” Living myths signifies the opposite of the connotative construct. J.J. Bacofen argues that the origins of history can only be revealed through myth since in myth “lies the beginning of all development.” Dr. Kia, quoting W.T. Stevenson, further explains the primacy of mythological discourse. According to Stevenson, “the essential character of our personal and social lives are shaped by myth, or it is by the power of particular myths which determine by way of determining our fundamental presuppositions, the way we shape our cultural, social, political, and economic lives. We do nothing of significance which is not informed by myth in a fundamental way, and the more significant our act, the more this is true. It is the symbols within the context of myth which give rise to all thought [Kia, A River of Prophecy: Constructing a Sacred History of African Americans].Mythic symbolism attempts to explain the spiritual nature of peoples and their inseparable connection to a universal order. Therefore, if someone wishes to pervert an idea, the most effective means is to reverse the sacred symbols or icons associated with the idea or ideas [Kia, A River of Prophecy: Constructing a Sacred History of African Americans]. Today, AWNP's Tasneem Siddiqui sits down with Dr. Nubia Kia, to explore the relationship between myth & its continuities in sacred + secret histories. Nubia Kai received a Ph.D. in African historical literature and film from Howard University, an MA degree in African Languages and Literature from the University of Wisconsin. Her work has been published in Black Scholar; Black World; Essence Magazine; Black American Literature Forum; Catalyst; Obsidian; Moving Out, Journal of Black Poetry; Left Curve; Journal of African Literature Association, Black Camera: International Film Journal; Journal of African American History, to name a few. Her book, Kuma Malinke Historiography: Sundiata Keita to Almamy Samori Toure, is an extensive study of the mythology, epics, poetry, and expository narratives of the Mali Empire. She has been an ardent researcher of comparative religion, anthropology, mythology, and Africana studies for over thirty years. Professor Kai is also a poet, novelist, and playwright who has received a number of awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Awards, six DC Commission on the Arts Awards, and the Larry Neal Writers Competition. She has two collections of poetry, Peace of My Mind and Solos, a collection of fables, The Sweetest Berry on the Bush, and an historical novel, I Spread My Wings And I Fly.

We will also touch base on how we mistake that someone is the one. Remember there's many lessons that we are supposed to learn in a relationship…. Today's topic is one that's really personal for me, but I felt it would be great to share it with the world. We all have to deal with passing of our loved ones, and it's so hard in the moment, because you in your mind you know you'll never physically see them again. You'll never be able to call their number and hear their voice or even stop by their house to sit and be in their presence. It's hard dealing with all of the emotions of death. We are going to have a discussion today about White/Black privilege. Time and time again it is being shown that it exists. We can't keep ignoring it and saying that it's some made up thing. Because it's not—it's just not. I know that some people are hearing this saying… here we go again another black person saying that I have more than them—even though they make more than me, and etc. but, this is not about that. This is about a line that has been drawn in the sand. Call In: (914) 803-4585 The Naturalista Experience™ Host: Katy Naturalista™ Please Listen, Watch & Subscribe! "Escaped Africans today referred to as Maroons, are said to have hunted the wild boar common to the region, then preserved it for days in a spice-heavy marinade. When it came time to cook the meat, the Maroons dug holes in the ground, filled them with charcoal, and buried the meat in the holes, which they then covered so as not to produce smoke and attract the attention of those that would bring them back into slavery." Nikki Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Over the past thirty years, her outspokenness, in her writing and in lectures, has brought the eyes of the world upon her. One of the most widely-read American poets, she prides herself on being "a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English." Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality. Always insisting on presenting the truth as she sees it, she has maintained a prominent place as a strong voice of the Black community. Her focus is on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others. NIKKI GIOVANNI was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and grew up in Lincoln Heights, an all-black suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated with honors from Fisk University, her grandfather's alma mater, in 1968; after graduating from Fisk, she attended the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She published her first book of poetry, Black Feeling Black Talk, in 1968, and within the next year published a second book, thus launching her career as a writer. Early in her career she was dubbed the "Princess of Black Poetry," and over the course of more than three decades of publishing and lecturing she has come to be called both a "National Treasure" and, most recently, one of Oprah Winfrey's twenty-five "Living Legends." Her Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection, on which she reads and talks about her poetry, was one of five finalists for a Grammy Award. The recipient of some twenty-five honorary degree. http://www.nikki-giovanni.com
