Podcasts are on the rise in Africa. The huge sector has been dominated by voices from outside the continent, but more African producers are now turning to the mic to tell their stories. Finally, one of the world's top choirs – Ghana's Harmonious Chorale – pops in whilst on tour.

We are so excited to welcome Mwendia Steve Kiengu to the podcast as we begin highlighting perspectives from Africa! Mwendia is a seminary student in Kenya who's grown up with same-sex attraction. He talks with TJ about the African cultural dynamics they've both experienced around same-sex attraction—how people talk about it, advice they give, and the challenges that Christians with same-sex attractions face. We value Mwendia's perspective on sexuality, both for Africans engaging in the conversation and for global listeners expanding their knowledge of the world. — Note: This episode uses the terms “Side A” and “Side B” (and X, Y) as shorthand, which is most often a western framing. If you're new to the conversation, you might find it helpful to check out Communion & Shalom episode #3, where we talk through the four “sides”: #3 - A-B-Y-X | 4 Sides on SSA/Gay Sexuality __________ Timestamps (0:24) TJ: On highlighting African voices (04:09) Introducing Mwendia (16:02) Same-sex sexual relations (and insult words) among Kenyan young people (22:54) Are there gay Kenyan celebrities?
In this episode, you will listen to the conversation between the co-hosts, Sr Ebere Amakwe and Nnaemeka Ali, O.M.I, and Prof Susan Abraham. Prof Abraham is the first woman as well as the first lay Catholic president of the editorial board of Conciliumthe oldest Theological Journal in the Catholic Church founded in 1965. She is also the vice president of Academic Affairs and the dean of faculty at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She shares her passion for Theology and how she uses her knowledge and research to empower women globally. Prof Abraham is one of the delegates at the forthcoming Second Pan-African Theological and Pastoral conference in Nairobi and will preside at the first Concilium International Assembly to be held in Africa. She will be speaking on Africa's encounter with modernity and the possibility of an “Afro-futurism” - the idea of looking at what the future of the Church and the world will look like from an African perspective. She thinks that the Nairobi conference is important because it shows how the experiences and work of a particular church can speak to the universal. It is her hope and prayer that Africa will breathe life into the world again.

Welcome to this special milestone! After seventy-seven hours twelve minutes and fifty-seven seconds, we went back in time, not to change it, but to rethink, 'relaugh' and relive a few of many memorable and iconic moments we were lucky to be part of. Please welcome to Kubhula, Episode 50!A million ideas ran through our minds, but after numerous calls and meetings, that indeed lasted longer than any of us wanted to, we finally decided to run with this one. So much to choose from, so many insightful and inspiring conversations. So many belly laughs, outrageous comments and full of fun moments. We wish we could've used them all, but instead, we had to strive for balance, a balance that we believe genuinely reflects what Kubhula is!We hope you enjoy it as much as we did, onto the next fifty, estão prontos!?Sign Up to Kubhula's NewsletterFollow Kubhula on InstagramPlease consider supporting this podcast

In today's episode, we chat with the an undisputed master of creativity. Nalini Aubeeluck is a serial entrepreneur who has started several successful ventures in her native Mauritius. A classically trained dancer, Nalini started the Nalini Dance School after spotting a gap in the entertainment sector. She soon grew the business to become the leading dance studio and performance group in Mauritius, inspiring many fans home and abroad. However, after a successful 15 year run her company ran into serious financial trouble as a result of the financial crises. Recognizing the need to diversify her income stream to survive the crises and support her family, she then brainstormed and came up with an idea for a one-stop shop for fashion and beauty. She presented the idea at a business competition and it was green light & subsequently produced. At that moment, Nalini had pivoted herself from creative artist to highly respected TV producer. Proving that her concept was viable, she came up with a second TV show centered around men. While developing the TV shows, she noticed another gap in the market and created a fashion label called FAITH. Though a young brand, FAITH is currently gaining publicity as a brand to watch. As a result of her exploits and various business interests, Nalini has been recognized as the unofficial Ambassador of Entrepreneurship in Mauritius and has been featured on CNN's African Voices. Her philosophy, tenacity, faith, belief in God and willingness to take risks embodies the true spirit of being a "Bulletproof Entrepreneur".

"Escaped Africans today referred to as Maroons, are said to have hunted the wild boar common to the region, then preserved it for days in a spice-heavy marinade. When it came time to cook the meat, the Maroons dug holes in the ground, filled them with charcoal, and buried the meat in the holes, which they then covered so as not to produce smoke and attract the attention of those that would bring them back into slavery."
