It's a true whiparound Friday as this episode covers many topics, spanning from a listener's Juuso Valimaki scouting report to a promotion for our Masters preview show going LIVE on YouTube next Tuesday night. Andy and Brendan are in high spirits and excited for Augusta, starting this show by choosing a player they'd like to see play himself into the field for next week. There's some more discussion about the Masters having range data for all players throughout the week, prompting Andy to ask PJ how to use these numbers for a gambling edge. Elsewhere in golf, the stars are out and speaking to media at LIV Doral, where Brooks Koepka was critical of the league's standing in year four despite its new CEO spending three months on changing a marketing phrase. Brendan shares some rumors about Bryson's non-participation in this week's "Duel" with YouTube creators and whether he actually owns his own YouTube channel he's been running for the last few years. As promised, PJ has a comprehensive preview of this weekend's James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational, where Darren Clarke and Boo Weekley will play two rounds with Warren Sapp and Dwight Freeney. This episode wraps with a new golf advice question focusing on a legendary upset in golf history.

We go back and talk about Bryson DeChambeau's awesome victory at Pinehurst #2 for the 124th US Open and Rory's missed putt on the 18th hole. We talk about how Bryson has been firing on all cylinders all year, how good he has been for the game of golf, and how Rory storming off because he lost was not a good look for him. This Friday episode begins with a discussion on grapes and where they fall in the fruit rankings. There’s also a brief announcement about another run of polos available Friday at Noon CDT. Brendan and Andy are trying their best to stock wisely, but they’re also idiots. As for the golf, they dive into the scorable first day at Harbour Town and the impressive showing from Jordan Spieth in a metric that matters much more than a hot putter. Bryson’s antics are covered in detail, from hitting over the range net to his putting green apparatuses to his quote that he can’t “unleash the Kraken” on this tighter setup. Also, a listener submitted question on how much luggage is needed for Thicc Boi’s travels is pondered. Then they turn to the subject of mics and loose impediments, which cost Adam Hadwin two shots and Daniel Berger his time in order to laser in on Patrick Reed. On the lower tours, the Pauper of Ponte Vedra concept is introduced. Flashback Friday features a quick addendum to Wednesday's Bubba discussion on his “extreme value” clothing line in 2007 before a meatier focus on Boo Weekley, the two-time Heritage winner who once thought golf was invented in Florida.

The special Wednesday edition of the Shotgun Start is a Spotlight on the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont, and is sponsored by the U.S. Open Victory Club, the USGA’s new fan community (usopen.com/victoryclub). Similar to their exploration of the ‘06 Winged Foot national championship, Brendan and Andy dive into the oddities, amusements, fashion, characters, controversies, and triumphs of a week that ended with Angel Cabrera on top. Tiger’s week of otherworldly ballstriking, including a round that Hank Haney called the best ever, is reviewed. Of the close calls and near misses, is this the forgotten one that Tiger should absolutely count in his major tally? Bubba Watson’s first real national moment is re-lived, as well as the USGA’s cheeky decision to pair him and his fellow Florida panhandle denizen Boo Weekley with a Japanese qualifier who had never played in the States. Aaron Baddeley’s rise and quick tumble from the 54-hole lead is discussed. They giggle about the frustrated and even angry Oakmont membership fearful that their course was being de-fanged by the USGA, even though there were only eight rounds all week that broke par. And of course, there is a lengthy discussion about El Pato, Argentina’s chain-smoking, big-eating major champion, who came from absolutely nothing to win golf’s toughest test at its toughest venue.

That makes 3 tartan jackets for Boo, who is from Florida's panhandle near Milton. Holly sat down with Frank Thomas at Reunion Golf Course recently to talk about the anchoring ruling by the USGA. Frank spent 26 years working for the USGA. One of his jobs was helping to write equipment rules for the USGA. He now runs The Putting Pad at Reunion GC. He was also the individual who introduced the graphite golf shaft to the industry. "The Anchoring Rule ... is a very complex rule and it tries to tell people how they should hold the club, which is the first time we've done that in the history of the game. I think it is going to be cumbersome and difficult to interpret and difficult to monitor. However the USGA believes that they can rely on the integrity of the individual and his intentions to get this rule working effectively," Thomas said. Thomas feels that anchoring doesn't improve the putting of some of the best players in the world. It does help improve the performance of some of the bad putters and the long putter is very much more efficient than the belly putter. However, we need to recognize that the best putters in the world are not anchoring. He said that about 40 percent of your score is from putting and about 45 percent of the game is spent on the putting green. Frank teaches proper putting and has designed his own putter. "We don't really understand putting very well and it hasn't been and not been teaching teachers how to teach the systematic and structured approach to putting," he said. "When you start using the long putter you start losing feel." Following is an excerpt from the PGA's statement on the USGA's decision. Although we do not agree with the decision, we applaud the USGA for its willingness to listen to our concerns and engage in meaningful discussions. In our opinion and based on our experience, the USGA treated the comment period for what it was intended to be -- a time to exchange opinions, concerns and potential solutions. Both Justin Leonard and Sergio Garcia both played well this tournament too. A lot of focus this week at Bay Hill is on Tiger Woods who is playing well of late and has won there 7 times. He went from 58 to number 2 in the world golf ranking last year in a seven months. Bob feels that it is remarkable that Tiger is on the cusp of becoming #1 again after everything that he has been through including 4 different swing coaches. After the Bridgestone in 2010 where he played so poorly, he got with Sean Foley and began his trek back to the top. The only other player to win as many tournaments as Tiger in the past year, 5, is Rory McIlroy. Bob spoke to Tiger about The Masters and not winning at the Masters since 2005. Tiger wants to win all the majors and Bob feels that maybe last year Tiger wanted it too much. Darren Decarlo, the Perfect Golf Club owner, and PGA Professional and teaching professional, calls in to talk about marshaling at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Pro-Am.   Darren feels that Tiger is the odds on favorite to win at Bay Hill.  Holly and Darren discuss Tiger's swing change since he has been with Sean. Gary Smits, Florida Times Union, calls in from Bay Hill to speak with Rich and Holly G. Breaking News reports that Yani Tseng missed her Pro-Am time Wednesday and got kicked out of the tournament this week. The two also talk about Tom Watson giving back one of the 4 Captain's picks for the 2014 Ryder Cup.  Watson feels that it is a great thing that there is one more spot that could earn the spot now. 3 of the last 4 major winners are in the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week, minus McIlroy. Palmer said that he was disappointed that Rory did not come to his tournament. Holly G and Rich B gave away two tickets to the caller who can identify how many times Tiger has won at Bay Hill. Jeff Shain, PGA Tour.com, calls in to wrap up the show and talks about the injury to Brandt Snedeker muscle pull.  Brandt did well at the Pro Am Wednesday at Bay Hill, second place which is not bad for coming off the "injured reserve."  Jeff talks about the shape of the golf course and how the rain has helped it.  Jeff is anxious to see how Boo Weekley will fair this week.  The last two tournaments he finished 8th and then 2nd.

Gregory fell in love with golf at the age of twelve, when he first began watching the game on television and attending local tournaments with his dad. But unlike many other golf fans, D.J. never dreamed of playing professionally. He never thought of becoming a ranked amateur, or even a caddie. When D.J. was an infant, doctors told his parents that he would probably spend his life in a wheelchair because of his cerebral palsy. But that didn't keep D.J. from trying to beat the odds, enduring five surgeries, learning to walk with a cane, and eventually earning college degrees in sports management. Golf had always remained D.J.'s passion, and in 2008, he decided to make a dream come true -- to travel the country and walk with a different player at each event on the PGA Tour. From the first event on the island of Maui, through the season-ending tournament at Disney World, D.J. lived out a sports fantasy unlike any other. Every week of the tour, he traveled to a tournament where he walked every round with the greatest golfers in the world: Boo Weekley, an affable country boy who went on to be the hero of the Ryder Cup...Davis Love III, whose twentieth career win earned him a lifetime card in the PGA...and Kenny Perry, the forty-eight-year-old veteran who, like the last days of a bright nova, made his final professional moments in 2008 the hottest and most brilliant of his career. For D.J., it was the most exciting year of his life, a physically challenging but emotionally rewarding adventure filled with wonderful people, unforgettable moments, and cherished memories.
