When kindred spirits come together in a community, ideas and dreams blossom, passion gets amplified, accountability and empowerment surges, and the problems? Well, they become less daunting. In this episode, Laurie has a great conversation with a dear friend, a cult legend in the online-community building world, Ryan Paugh. Laurie and Ryan share how they met, what Ryan’s role is as a community builder, and why communities are essential in fixing the broken wheel that is work. After a few years of working for corporate America, Ryan dove into the startup arena where he felt his passion for helping others would contribute more - this was his first step in his epic entrepreneurial journey. He created Brazen Careerist, which started out as a community for young professionals looking to find their place in the corporate world, where they can find answers and support from peers and other like-minded individuals. Long story short, Brazen was a success but eventually rebranded into an SAS technology product, which now serves as a peer-to-peer speed networking platform. As the product shifted away from its community-based roots, Ryan decided to walk a different path, but kept the burning passion to create better communities to support the next generation of highly driven leaders. He eventually became the co-founder and COO of The Community Company. Along with his business partner and co-author of Superconnector, Scott Gerber, they went on to build several outstanding communities for different organizations like business executives, youth leaders, and entrepreneurs such as YEC and the Forbes Council which includes the Forbes Human Resources Council, where members are encouraged to support, engage, and pick each other’s brains. Why did Ryan focus on community building? Well, everyone is part of a community in some way or another. We are social beings after all. Ryan believes that in being part of a community, we are given the opportunity to learn and impart vital lessons and experiences that nurture us into the people we are now. He says, “Give,” because he believes that there’s so much more to living than just getting something. Life and people aren’t meant to be boxed up in a simple transaction of give and take. We are much more complex than that - we have feelings, aspirations, and lives outside of the grind. This is why Ryan feels work has more... work to do in a community and culture building aspect. “You’re here to work and not to make friends,” is a typical feel at the office, but we DO need to build relationships in the workplace to grow into more productive members of the organization. Work is broken because it has been reduced to a means to an end; a paycheck for hours, nothing more than a simple transaction of, “if you do this, you get this.” Laurie shares Ryan’s sentiment that there’s more to work than just earning the money. That by limiting someone’s identity to a mere “bringer of bacon” a.k.a “corporate zombie” they have subsequently limited that individual’s potential to contribute to the organization’s greater cause. You see, when people see past the money and embrace purpose, when they are allowed to invest in things that they truly value, there’s a greater opportunity to create a positive and lasting legacy for others to follow or replicate. As a veteran community builder, Ryan believes that a good community must have an element of trust from the top-down. Ask anyone who knows Ryan and they’ll immediately say how helpful and encouraging he is despite his being a company co-founder. More than developing the products, organizations should look into nurturing its workers on a deeper level. People at the bottom makes the most impact, so it is important that they are set up for success throughout their stay in the company and, hopefully, even when they transition into something else. He dives deep into this “building relationships that matter” philosophy in his book, Superconnector. Ryan and Laurie are aware though that most people are still stuck in the old ways and find processes to be difficult to build - and even harder to implement - but it doesn’t have to be that way and we can all to do better. Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
The “glass ceiling” is a concept that a woman who tries to progress in her career may only reach a mid-level position, says guest expert Elisa Doucette. The phrase, “glass ceiling,” denotes that a woman is able to see men, through a pane of glass, in positions above her own, but she is not able to break the glass, to reach a higher level in the organization. Elisa says corporations have adopted a set of values towards women (or men) who are not willing to put aside their career or personal values and sell their souls, to make money. And although the concept has evolved since the 1970’s, the glass ceiling still exists -- just in a modified form. Elisa says corporations have adopted a set of values towards women (or men) who are not willing to put aside their career or personal values and sell their souls, to make money. And although the concept has evolved since the 1970’s, the glass ceiling still exists -- just in a modified form. Women need to understand the paradigm and know that corporations aren’t out to get them just because they are a woman. A woman needs to understand what motivates her employer and use actions -- not just words -- to show her value. If a woman can show how she will impact the company’s bottom line, she can start owning her own trajectory within the organization. Three tips women can use to show their employer how amazing they are: Quantify your accomplishments with hard numbers, to show the value you bring to an organization. Make sure your voice is heard, and be willing to defend your opinions. Understand your priorities, both business and personal. Move past “What can I do about it?” and start developing your iron will and thick skin! Elisa Doucette Bio Elisa Doucette is a freelance writer and editor. Christie Mims is the Founder and CEO of The Revolutionary Club, the number one destination for smart women who are unwilling to settle for anything less than career happiness. Compassionate, caring, and a little kick-ass, Christie is here to make sure that you love what you do (note: life is too short not to love what you do). A certified professional coach and recovering consultant with a background in working for Fortune 500 companies, Christie has been there, done that, and worn those uncomfortable shoes. She has dispensed career advice for Forbes, LearnVest, Brazen Careerist, Yahoo! and many more; and she can be seen speaking at the University of VA, The Daily Muse, Women for Hire, The US Army, and at a variety of other organizations. Why is career transition so important? Christie says we treat our jobs as Disney treats love. That is not really the case, though. Your career is something that is going to span 50+ years. When you enjoy your work, you tend to live a healthier and longer life. The more we invest in our careers, the happier we are in our careers. What is the #1 thing that holds people back in making a career change? Fear holds people back. Fear of failure, of not liking your new choice of career. Most people let the fear seep in and talk ourselves out of this big change. Sometimes it is easier to stay stuck than to make a change. What can people do to overcome their fear? The best way to conquer your fears is to find a sense of community. Once you know that others feel the same and you get to talk about your fears and feel normal about it, it can help you face your fears. Also, get expert support and a plan. If you knew the answers, you would do it. So, let someone guide you towards getting over your fears. What is the career happiness revolution? When you find your passion, you are reconnecting with who you really are, which we tend to cover up by our safe jobs. When you stop following everyone else, it is a revolution. It can feel like you are shaking up your life. The revolution club is a space where people can talk honestly about their careers. She believes that if we can change the talk about work, we can change people’s lives. What are the benefits of your free program, New Year, New Career, No Fear? After taking this program, students have said they found their passion or asked their boss for a raise. People said they have never felt better in their careers. There is no better time to be thinking about your career. The economy is finally getting better. Companies are changing their structures to allow for more freedom. What is your favorite career success story? After a change in the way she thought and a career shift, one of Christie’s students is now an environmental engineer and she says she would never have had the courage to do it without the course. She did not believe it was possible. Another student is going to make more money in his own business than he is now and has a year of work already lined up. Go to adriennedorison.com/bigmistakes to download this free reflection guide. Started a business on the side of my day job, organically evolved from a personal development & leadership blog I started in late 2014. Offered my services for FREE to get some humans some real results and build my own confidence that I could start charging for this! Worked during mornings lunch breaks, evenings, and weekends to grow my side business alongside my corporate job. Took lots of action - without overthinking things first. Read The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and completely switched my schedule around to make more time to grow my business in the evenings after my corporate day job. Read 6 Months to 6 Figures by Peter Voogd and learned to really master my skills before moving on - then later he became more of a personal mentor. Focused on Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University program and paid off all my debt in just 6 months - over $45,000. Invested in an empowerment coach and transformed ME before I transformed a business w/ Lisa Carpenter Dove deep into podcasts and learned from the best while I was on the road during my day job commute; Internet Business Mastery with friend, Jason Van Orden, Tiffany Han's Raise Your Hand Say Yes, Chalene Johnson's Build Your Tribe, Amy Porterfield's Online Marketing Made Easy, Pat Flynn's Smart Passive Income… Built my own website on SquareSpace and it was pretty darn good for a DIY. Had my website re-designed by someone and paid tons of money for it — but basically I had an artist build a bridge and it was a website nightmare that had to be redone. Had it redesigned again – by someone far more qualified to build a website that does what a website is supposed to do…and it's pretty too. Created a FB group – grew it organically and it has continued to grow to a group full of supportive, high-achieving humans looking to become more masterful. Had my first professional photoshoot done and even brought my dog, Church E. Bear Launched a course before I was ready and had 5 people join. Launched another course before I was ready and had 15 people join. Raised my prices 3 different times because I had a waitlist. Revamped my packages 3 different times because it takes awhile to figure out what's going to get your clients the best results. Worked with incredible clients – saw them getting incredible results, getting published, quitting their jobs, getting their own clients, creating their first products, doubling their income, increasing their prices, starting waitlists, growing their audience, etc. Quit my corporate job. Took two courses that rocked my world - BTBY with Kimra Luna, and Sales School with Kendrick Shope. Reached out to mentors and influencers to learn from the best. Started my own podcast - The School of Self-Mastery. Hit the New & Noteworthy in iTunes and stayed there for over 11 weeks. Reached the 10% of all podcasts with tons of downloads thanks to you! Connected with and interviewed tons of successful, influential and interesting humans because of the podcast - condensed 3 years of podcasting into 6 months! Shared my debt freedom story publicly even was I knew it would annoy people. Traveled to Atlanta to meet and be interviewed my personal finance guru, Clark Howard - and had my first national TV debut because of this bold action. Hired Shana Lynn Yao from yourmarketingmastermind.com to up my business game. Hired my next mentor, Farnoosh Torabi, who has been an invaluable investment for me and my business. Started outsourcing some smaller tasks to free up some time. Got even better at outsourcing and hired Erin Kelly as my OBM - best decision ever and she'll eventually be my first full-time team member (fun fact, Erin was a client, and now I'm her client). Made a few business besties just by building real relationships. Planned and launched a live event with a business bestie - and it was the biggest failure turned lesson ever…stay tuned for 2016 plans Put systems in place and invested in the tools I needed - 17hats, Acuityscheduling, Leadpages, Libsyn, Basecamp Won a year long coaching program for 2016 with sales expert, Kendrick Shope, and plan to get banging results to thank her for the generosity. Got active on periscope, and then stopped when it started to feel stressful. Pitched myself (and got published) in Huffington Post, GROW, Brazen Careerist, and Get Rich Slowly. Created tons of content & free resources - some that were great and some that “flopped” Gave away over 100 hours of free coaching and over $35,000 of content and coaching. Condensed over 3 years of podcasting into just 6 months and learned tons about myself and interviewing in general. Was featured as a guest on TONS of podcasts (SoMoney, Stacking Benjamins, Screw The Nine to Five, Lifestyle Business Podcast, The 5am Miracle, All Up In Your Lady Business, Success Secrets of Entrepreneurs, Creative Soul Lab, etc…) and even one of the #1 podcasts in all of iTunes - Art of Charm Was consistent EVERY SINGLE DAY for all 365 this year. Seriously, I didn't miss a day. Focused on building relationships and generosity, not on selling. Took a stand, often a controversial one, on the things that I believed in, which attracted the right people to my work. Launched a membership site Simplified Success Society and then added a $1 trial period. Joined a mastermind full of powerhouse women. Launched an in-person retreat for June 2016 and have almost filled the spots! Took vacations with my fiance, paid cash, and was able to take time off or even work from wherever I was if I wanted to. Made over $11,500 in business mistakes - and then talked about them. Tracked my numbers and didn't avoid my finances. Focused on profit not just revenue and "banked" income versus "booked" income. Showed up even when I didn't really feel like it because I knew once I started, I'd get motivated {I was always right}. Wasn't afraid to take big risks, but always made sure they were calculated ones. Spent tons of time understanding what my audience wanted {and still do} and then gave it to them over and over again. Invested a lot of time, energy, action and money into my business and reaped the rewards. Welcoming in 2016 success!
