Masai giraffes more endangered than previously thought

Endangered Masai giraffes are even more at risk than previously thought, researchers from Penn State University have found. Because of a valley running through Kenya and Tanzania, the subspecies has divided into two groups that haven't interbred in more than 250,000 years. It means there are actually two smaller groups of separate species — and both are at risk. These giraffes are facing a greater threat to their existence than previously thought. The study has shown that the Great Rift Valley running through Kenya and Tanzania has divided the subspecies, stopping the exchange of genetic material. The genomic analysis of 100 Masai giraffes showed that the giraffes had not migrated from either side of the rift to breed in the past 250,000 to 300,000 years. Interbreeding is of great significance as it enhances genetic diversity, thus shielding small populations from diseases. The Masai giraffe is also known as the Kilimanjaro giraffe and is found exclusively in Kenya and Tanzania. However, its population has declined over the last three decades from 70,000 to 35,000 individuals in the wild, thus leading to its classification as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The main threats to the species are poaching as well as habitat loss and fragmentation, according to the IUCN. Kenya's savanna ecosystems host three out of nine giraffe species, attracting numerous tourists. Conservationists are campaigning for a giraffe poaching ban. “I do know that our regulations, policy, giraffes were not classified as an endangered species so if today you arrest someone with a giraffe's product, there is no regulation at the moment. What we only talk about is bushmeat. Bushmeat is any species that is not of concern. So it is time the policymakers craft a wildlife policy immediately as soon as we can to put those animals there,” says Jim Justus Nyamu, executive director of Elephant Neighbors Center. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Across the world, millions of people eat a 'hidden meat' - bushmeat, or wild meat. But handling or eating bushmeat can pose a higher risk of transmitting zoonotic disease - diseases which affect both animals and humans. This episode looks at a pioneering study led by scientist Ekta Patel of ILRI that investigates how people understand that risk - and whether that understanding changes eating habits. Read more: New study assesses disease risk perceptions of wild meat at the border of Kenya and Tanzania

Bushmeat, meat from wild animals, is an important source of protein for communities across the world. But in some parts of the globe it has become an illegal or luxury item - and that's posing a problem, threatening ecosystems and human health simultaneously. Five million tonnes of wild meat is extracted annually from the Congo basin, including critically endangered primates. Demand for meat from this part of the world is becoming unsustainable, with protected species often caught between hunters and their prey. In this episode of Wild Crimes, join us for a in-depth discussion on how our food systems affect human health. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Dr. Tushar Mehta all about past, current, like COVID-19, and future pandemics. It’s really important to understand some of the most impactful reasons pandemics started so we can make decisions that put us in the best position not to let them happen again. We talk about what a pandemic actually is, break down some other important vocabulary like Zoonosis and talk about how and why viruses morph. You are going to find this super interesting. So buckle your seatbelts, because it is a long one.  Dr. Tushar Mehta is an ER physician working in the Toronto area and has practiced family and addiction medicine in the past. Over the years he has worked with Project CANOE, a Toronto based organization serving youth, conducted medical outreach with village schools in Kutch India, and currently works with Health Education Project Haiti. In 2013 He spent 4 months sailing with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to protect whales in Antarctic waters.   Tushar is very interested in the evidence for a plant-based diet as it impacts health and ecology.  Currently, he is reviewing evidence for the role of animal agriculture in viral pandemics. Along with a small team, he has created a database of literature, called Plant-Based Data, to help people access the best research regarding a plant-based diet on these important subjects. In this episode we discuss:  #BlackLivesMatter What’s happening in the hospitals now How COVID is affecting general health Zoonosis What are pandemics How viruses start Bats and pangolins Corona Diseases Why viruses mutate Factory farming  Influenza A and Influenza B Historical flu pandemics Bushmeat trade  How to prevent pandemics Smallpox  Ebola type virus  What to expect as we open up

This episode, we're digging into the larger story behind those words, that of our relationship to eating wild animals: how and why have our attitudes to wild meat shifted over time? Why is it that deer shot by a hunter in the U.S. is game, but monkey caught in the Democratic Republic of Congo is bushmeat? With the help of Gina Rae La Cerva, author of the new book, Feasting Wild, we explore what we gain and lose by eating wild, from the lost primeval forests of Europe to Robin Hood, and from smoked monkey to bird spit.

Senate Republicans seem to have fallen into the morass. Top party members in the Senate have thrown cold water on the idea that Congress would pass even initiatives that enjoy bipartisan support, such as a national “red flag” law that would allow law enforcement and family members to go to court to get weapons removed from people who exhibit signs of being a danger. Senator Ron Johnson, the Wisconsin Republican who is chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said on Capitol Hill on Tuesday that he thought “the debate really hasn’t changed much at all” after the most recent shootings. He said he did not expect significant legislation to reach the president. Yet other Republican senators said they remain engaged in substantive talks among themselves and with White House officials about expanded background checks, mental health provisions and other proposals. No one is backing away despite the president’s waffling, they said. he remains of more than 2,200 unborn children have been found at the Illinois home of a former Indiana abortion doctor who died earlier this month, according to reports. The discovery was made by members of the family of Dr. Ulrich Klopfer, who died Sept. 3. The family members had been searching through Klopfer’s belongings after he died, FOX 59 of Indianapolis reported. There is no evidence that any abortions were performed at the private residence, the Will County (Ill.) Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
