Where the Skellig Islands Are and Why They're So Unforgettable The Skellig Islands sit about 12 kilometers (8 miles) off the coast of County Kerry, beyond the Skellig Ring. Skellig Michael is the larger of the two, shaped like a steep stone pyramid rising from the ocean. From viewpoints along the Ring of Kerry, it's striking – but being out on the water brings its scale and isolation into sharp focus. Neil describes it as a place that doesn't quite belong to the modern world, and that sense of otherworldliness is part of what makes the islands so compelling. The Monastery at the Edge of the Atlantic Skellig Michael's fame isn't just about scenery. The island is home to an early medieval monastery, likely founded in the 7th century by monks seeking complete isolation for spiritual devotion. With no deserts in Ireland, remote Atlantic islands became places of withdrawal and focus. The monastery complex includes: Dry-stone beehive huts (clocháns) Oratories and outdoor altars A burial area and stone crosses Ingenious rainwater collection systems All of it was built without mortar, relying entirely on carefully balanced stone. The site later endured Viking raids, was rededicated to St. Michael the Archangel, and eventually abandoned as a permanent settlement—though it never lost its importance as a place of pilgrimage. Little Skellig: The Island You Can't Visit Beside Skellig Michael is Little Skellig, dramatically steeper and even more inhospitable. Today it's a protected bird sanctuary, home to tens of thousands of gannets, and landing is not permitted. While archaeologists believe it would be surprising if Little Skellig was completely unused in the past, modern visitors experience it only from the water – where its scale and wildlife are still jaw-dropping. When Skellig Michael Can Be Visited Access to Skellig Michael is extremely limited. The landing season generally runs from late April or early May through September, and even then, weather plays the deciding role. Roughly one-third of scheduled trips are canceled each year. Calm conditions on shore don't guarantee a landing; the swell at the island's pier must be minimal, and conditions can change quickly. Neil stresses that flexibility is essential. What travelers should know: Landing permits sell out quickly Staying near Portmagee or Valentia Island improves your chances of last-minute openings Planning multiple days in the area gives you flexibility if weather cancels your trip There's no foolproof strategy – just patience, preparation, and backup plans. What a Landing Trip Is Really Like A landing trip typically includes a 45–55 minute boat ride each way, often rough even on decent days. Once ashore, visitors have several hours on the island – but the physical challenge comes fast. The climb to the monastery involves 618 steep stone steps, with no handrails and narrow sections where people pass in both directions. Neil's practical advice: Skip walking sticks; you need free hands for balance Anyone uncomfortable with heights should think carefully before starting the climb You don't need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness matters Take breaks – there are natural resting points along the way There is now a single toilet facility near the landing area, but queues form quickly. Puffins, Gannets, and Wildlife Encounters From April through early July, Skellig Michael is home to thousands of puffins, nesting right beside the steps. They're remarkably unfazed by visitors and are a highlight for many travelers. Gannets dominate the skies year-round, and crossings sometimes include sightings of dolphins or whales. Later in the season, the puffins are gone, but the atmosphere of the island remains just as powerful. Eco Tours: A Worthwhile Alternative For those who can't land – or choose not to – eco tours circle Skellig Michael and Little Skellig without docking. These trips focus on: Wildlife viewing Sea cliffs and island scale Close views of both Skelligs from the water Eco tours are a strong option for families with younger children or travelers uneasy with heights. Just remember that you remain on the boat for the entire trip, which can be challenging for anyone prone to seasickness. There's no visitor center or flashy display – just a simple sign and one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world. Loher Stone Fort Loher is one of the best-preserved stone ring forts in Kerry. Massive stone walls, a dramatic setting, and a strong sense of place make it a standout stop for travelers interested in early settlement and defense. Ballinskelligs Priory and St. Michael's Holy Well Closely connected to Skellig Michael's story, Ballinskelligs Priory on the mainland was founded by monks who left the island. Nearby, St. Michael's Holy Well (Tobar Mhichíl) is a small, atmospheric site that ties the island monastery back into the surrounding landscape. Add in beaches, coastal walks, and a stop along the Skellig Ring, and it's easy to see why this part of Kerry rewards travelers who give it time. Let's begin the… 13:47 - QUEST & CHORUS of SKELLIG MICHAEL Eight miles off the coast of County Kerry is the island of Skellig Michael. It is a jagged twin-peaked island. Its name comes from the Irish Sceilg Mhichíl which means Michael's Rock. It was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The island's history began in the sixth century. Monks sought isolation and closeness to God. So they settled there because the early Irish monastic tradition valued hardship, solitude, and spiritual testing. The monks carved out a small community on narrow terraces more than 600 steps above sea level. The monastic settlement they built still survives. They built a cluster of beehive stone huts, stone crosses and terraces connected by narrow paths. Everything was dry-stone construction. That means they were fitted together without mortar. They were built so well that they have lasted over a millennium. The monks grew small gardens, caught seabirds and fish, and collected rainwater in cisterns. They survived off of what the island would allow. Skellig Michael was a center of devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel sometime after the 8th century. The island was also a pilgrimage site for centuries. Climbing its steps was seen as a form of penance and spiritual renewal. By the 13th century, life on Skellig Michael had become too difficult. Storms, isolation, and changing Church patterns led the monks to relocate to the mainland, near Ballinskelligs. But the island remained a place of pilgrimage well into the modern era. Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognized for its exceptional preservation of early Christian monastic life and its haunting natural beauty. It's also become familiar to a new generation as Ahch-To, the oceanic world where Luke Skywalker lived in exile in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Even now, Skellig Michael stands as a symbol of endurance, of faith carved into stone, of solitude turned to sanctuary, and of the fragile bridge between human devotion and the raw power of nature. LEGENDS OF SKELLIG MICHAEL One of the more famous legends involves the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesian invasion of Ireland. It is recounted in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (the Book of Invasions). According to this myth: As the Milesians sailed toward Ireland around 1400 BC in the mythic narrative, a storm was caused by the Tuatha Dé Danann. They are one of the faerie-like supernatural race in Irish mythology. Skellig's cliffs are sometimes mentioned as one of the treacherous places where ships were driven ashore. One version says Irr, a son of Míl Espáine (the mythic ancestor of the Gaels), was travelling from the Iberian Peninsula. He drowned and was buried on Skellig. Una serie di appuntamenti online gratuiti ed estendibili a tutti i colleghi interessati. Infine, va ricordata Critici si diventa, l'iniziativa che dà ai ragazzi la possibilità di trasformarsi in piccoli critici. David Almond marks 25 years of his extraordinary book, Skellig, with a walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh in Northumberland. As he tells Clare, it's a landscape that has long inspired his imagination and writing. Skellig tells the tale of Michael, a young boy who befriends a magical creature - part owl, part angel – that needs Michael's help to survive. The book has won multiple awards, been adapted for stage, film, radio and opera and translated into 40 languages. As they walk, David tells Clare how his childhood in the north-east shaped both his character and writing, and discusses why walking is a necessary pleasure. The Dry Heart by Natalia Ginzberg Ginzberg was an Italian writer who died in 1991 and in the past few years her books have been translated and reprinted and finding a whole new audience. The Dry Heart was first published in 1947 and is a very short novel about a women who shoots her husband. It's incredibly moving, and brutal but told with her astonishing style - very clear writing, minimal description, just movement and action. The North East of England's Case for Culture is a bold plan to raise £300 million for art projects. Instead of being an adjunct to development culture is seen as the key to the region's redevelopment. But only a few years ago Newcastle cut its arts budget entirely. Organisations are exploring new ways of working. Jim Beirne of Live Theatre takes John Wilson to the pub the theatre runs, the profits of which pay for a new play every year. It also owns restaurants and prime office space, to fund its theatre and outreach projects. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell has just launched a new organisation, Magnetic North East, to foster the identity, music and traditions of the North East. It has released an album of songs and tunes, new and old, about the River Tyne, by artists ranging from Jimmy Nail to the Unthanks. Last Friday it held a grand concert in the region's village hall - Auditorium One of The Sage, featuring famous North East artists such as Paul Smith of the band Maximo Park, young folk musicians and a host of children giving a world premiere of a work by David Almond.Kathryn Tickell, John Mowbray - the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and a prime mover in the Case for Culture, David Almond, who wrote Skellig, the Olivier Award winning playwright, Shelagh Stephenson, whose new play is set in her hometown of Tynemouth, all contribute to John Wilson's exploration, as he rambles around Newcastle, of the role of art in the regeneration of the North East of England.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the writer David Almond.Most of his work is for children but the adults who populate the juries of heavyweight literary prizes really like it too. The accolades began with his first novel Skellig published in 1998 when he was 47; it won the mighty "Whitbread Children's" award and then many others besides.Ever since, he's been acclaimed for his ability to craft complex, philosophical narratives with strikingly down to earth characterisations.He grew up just outside Newcastle in a big, Catholic family and his childhood features heavily in his stories.
