David Almond marks 25 years of his extraordinary book, Skellig, with a walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh in Northumberland. As he tells Clare, it's a landscape that has long inspired his imagination and writing. Skellig tells the tale of Michael, a young boy who befriends a magical creature - part owl, part angel – that needs Michael's help to survive. The book has won multiple awards, been adapted for stage, film, radio and opera and translated into 40 languages. As they walk, David tells Clare how his childhood in the north-east shaped both his character and writing, and discusses why walking is a necessary pleasure. The stretch of coastline they're exploring is rich with historical, religious and cultural significance and the entire region has provided inspiration for David's writing over the years. They met at Seahouses Harbour and walked through sun, rain and wind to the most dominant man-made feature in the area - Bamburgh Castle.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

The Dry Heart was first published in 1947 and is a very short novel about a women who shoots her husband. Phil was born in Hull, where he grew up wanting to play football for Hull City. His first job was as a care worker in a children's home. Nowadays, when he's not writing, he works as head of sales and marketing for the independent book publisher, David Fickling Books, who publish Philip Pullman.  We talk about getting into reading through comics and graphic novels, agree on a book that's a masterclass in structure and characterisation – a checklist of excellence, Phil calls it – and the joy of the rollercoaster of writing a story for the first time. When it comes to marketing, Phil believes in the power of the voice and is reassuringly passionate about supporting a writer through their career, and not just the debut, when they are the shiny new thing. But writers must put the work in too. Links: Phil Earle website: http://www.philearle.com When The Sky Falls: https://www.waterstones.com/book/when-the-sky-falls/phil-earle/9781783449651 David Fickling Books: https://www.davidficklingbooks.com The Outsiders by SE Hinton: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/575/57559/the-outsiders/9780141189116.html Skellig by David Almond: https://davidalmond.com/tag/skellig/ Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/609/60993/goodnight-mister-tom/9780141362717.html Holes by Louis Sachar: https://www.waterstones.com/book/holes/louis-sachar/9781408865231

"Everything I learned about life, I learned from being a tavern wench" Branching out from your comfort zone and getting more gigs through networking Growing up in the 1960's surrounded by music in a musical family Just how does one go about becoming a tavern wench? The excitement of finding your people Our now-recurring theme of how being in the right place at the right time with the right preparation behind you just might work out! Taking up the banner to keep the things you love alive Grant writing and the importance of knowing your audience - both the people attending a performance, as well as who is reading the grant proposal The history of The Old Howard Troupe, the Music Hall group Lynn is a member of and manages The Folk Song Society of Greater Boston Pub Sings (shout out to The Skellig, formerly of Waltham, MA!), The Greater Boston Traditional Song group, & NEFFA Creating a stage persona ... and how awesome Marie Llyod was. The role of the Music Hall as entertainment in Victorian society ... and the connection to steampunk festivals Singing as ourselves vs as a character (pssst, "Sovay" rhymes with "day") Ask yourself: "What have I not done yet that I'd really like to do?" Musical theater! A good way to practice a song that you're learning by ear is to record yourself singing them Make a physical connection to your song. You can pace in your house while you're saying the words to the song in the same meter you'll be singing them in. Cate really does appreciate her time with Shakespeare and Company! They also taught her to feel lines of a play in her body to help remember them. Writing things out in longhand can also help with memorization. Storing things in short term vs long term memory Managing a group - and creating branding and messaging It's important to learn to be able to talk about yourself and what you do and how you're good at it! Entrepreneurial people and organizers often start young - in Lynn's case, she organized a neighborhood yard sale Making the move from being a corporate employee to self-employed entrepreneur - applying what you love most about your 9-5 job to what you can create for yourself (another recurring theme around here on Making Life Podcast...) Marvel as Lynn masterfully connects everything and ties it all together at 1:02 - "I can learn anything!" "What I love about it (singing) is it makes me feel alive."

In this week's episode acclaimed singer/songwriter David Gray speaks to Rosamund Urwin about how music and the arts have fared throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. David had originally planned to spend 2020 embarking on a huge string of 'White Ladder' anniversary shows to mark 20 years since the release of his breakthrough multi-million selling album. When these arena dates - like so many other live shows - were rescheduled due to the pandemic, David chose instead to finish a record he had recorded prior to lockdown at Edwyn Collins’ Helmsdale studio on the Sutherland coast. Entitled ’Skellig’, The title comes from the story of Skellig - a formation of precipitous rocky islands off the coast of Co. Kerry, the most westerly point in Ireland. Ravaged by the Atlantic, the seemingly un-inhabitable location of Skellig Michael became an unlikely site of pilgrimage in 600AD for a group of monks, who believed that leading such a merciful existence, they would leave the distraction of the human realm to be ultimately closer to God.You can stream 'Skellig' in full from here: http://bit.ly/DavidGraySkellig Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/intelligencesquared. Taylor Swift, who recently won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, has today released a new album called Fearless (Taylor's Version), which is an exact remake of her 2008 breakthrough album, Fearless. Music critic Sophie Harris explains why Taylor is repeating herself and reviews the new record. Tom Sutcliffe discusses HRH the Duke of Edinburgh's interest in art and literature with Jonathan Yeo, who painted his portrait, and Ian Lloyd, author of The Duke: 100 Chapters in the life of Prince Philip. Skellig author David Almond discusses his new novel Bone Music. Set in the forests and fells of Northern England, it's about a young girl who connects with a spiritual ancestor from the stone-age. Critics Jan Asante and Kohinoor Sahota discuss the provocative new Amazon drama, Them. Does it offer something new in the politicised American gothic horror genre or is it just a Jordan Peele rip off? The North East of England's Case for Culture is a bold plan to raise £300 million for art projects. Instead of being an adjunct to development culture is seen as the key to the region's redevelopment. But only a few years ago Newcastle cut its arts budget entirely. Organisations are exploring new ways of working. Jim Beirne of Live Theatre takes John Wilson to the pub the theatre runs, the profits of which pay for a new play every year. It also owns restaurants and prime office space, to fund its theatre and outreach projects. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell has just launched a new organisation, Magnetic North East, to foster the identity, music and traditions of the North East. It has released an album of songs and tunes, new and old, about the River Tyne, by artists ranging from Jimmy Nail to the Unthanks. Last Friday it held a grand concert in the region's village hall - Auditorium One of The Sage, featuring famous North East artists such as Paul Smith of the band Maximo Park, young folk musicians and a host of children giving a world premiere of a work by David Almond.Kathryn Tickell, John Mowbray - the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and a prime mover in the Case for Culture, David Almond, who wrote Skellig, the Olivier Award winning playwright, Shelagh Stephenson, whose new play is set in her hometown of Tynemouth, all contribute to John Wilson's exploration, as he rambles around Newcastle, of the role of art in the regeneration of the North East of England.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the writer David Almond. Most of his work is for children but the adults who populate the juries of heavyweight literary prizes really like it too. The accolades began with his first novel Skellig published in 1998 when he was 47; it won the mighty "Whitbread Children's" award and then many others besides.Ever since, he's been acclaimed for his ability to craft complex, philosophical narratives with strikingly down to earth characterisations. He grew up just outside Newcastle in a big, Catholic family and his childhood features heavily in his stories. He says "Each of my books has had to be written - there was something that had to come out."Producer: Alison Hughes.
