This Week in Canadian EdTech Unboxing the Canvas LMS by Instructure w/ Amineh Olad-Koper Date: 08/05/2024
In this episode of Trending in Education, Mike Palmer sits down with Steve Daly, CEO of Instructure, at the HolonIQ Back to School Summit in New York. Steve shares his journey from mechanical engineering to leading the company behind Canvas, the leading learning management system (LMS). We explore the changing landscape of education, the role of technology in learning, and the potential impact of AI on the future of edtech. Key takeaways: The educational journey is becoming more flexible, with a growing need for diverse pathways and recognition of skills beyond traditional degrees. AI in education shows promise, but its immediate impact may be more focused on simplifying administrative tasks for teachers rather than replacing human interaction. Career success often comes from pursuing opportunities that bring energy and passion, rather than following a predetermined path. Steve describes Instructure's approach to integrating AI securely, the importance of personalization in learning, and the role the company's strategic partnerships play in its strategic development. Steve also offers valuable career advice based on his extensive experience in the tech industry. Subscribe to Trending in Ed wherever you get your podcasts. Visit us at TrendinginEd.com for more.

How About Those Higher-ed LMSes? In this episode, we talked with Randy Rebman about LMSes from the higher ed side of things - specifically Blackboard and Canvas LMS. It was just a couple of years ago that Canvas LMS stormed onto the scene and toppled Blackboard's ownership of the Higher Ed LMS space and we talked about why, the differences between the two types of systems, and what migrating from Blackboard to Canvas is like. Ultimately, I think this conversation left me with more questions than answers. I'm curious why Higher Ed's LMS offerings seem to be so lacking in many ways. The differences between users is an obvious factor, but you'd think that there'd be more common features. Give this episode a listen if you'd like to hear something a little different from the LMS Playlist. Randy had some excellent insights to share and can help you understand features you want --- and don't want --- in your LMS.

In this highlight clip from ClassCast Podcast Ep.020, education industry expert Jon Kasica describes to host Ryan Tibbens the process and teams involved in choosing a Learning Management System for a school division. In perhaps the greatest irony of the student-centered, project-based learning trends promoted by many educational leaders, Jon points out that students are rarely involved in adopting technology that aims to increase students' "voice and choice." If you're a teacher who wonders how the tech is chosen, but you never get invited to the meeting, this clip is for you. Support the show (http://paypal.me/TibbensEST)
This highlight clip from ClassCast Podcast Ep.020 features host Ryan Tibbens and online learning management system expert Jon Kasica discussing how the current rush to implement distance learning across the country might affect students' and schools' success as well as perceptions about the effectiveness of blended/distance learning and new learning management systems. Both men share fears that this frantic, disorganized implementation might yield frustrations and doubts that could jeopardize the future of blended learning. Ep 14 7 Tips for Teaching Writing During Co-vid 19 Teaching online I didn't plan on talking about this today. This will probably be my shortest podcast ever. I was actually supposed to release my podcast about freewriting, but then everyone bought all the toilet paper and Purell, and now we're all teaching from home. So, today I just want to talk about some easy things you can give students to do that requires no photocopying or learning Google Classroom or Canvas LMS. Although I have lots of videos on my webpage, TPT and Instagram about Canvas, if you need them. First of all, keep it simple. If you have to get some things together for your kiddos, keep them simple. Let students practice what they already know how to do. No new content. Give them something to do that provides choice. For example, ask students to choose a book to read and write a paragraph recommending it to a friend or another way to demonstrate reading. It can be an online book if they have no access to books, but to their phone if they have WiFi. Here is a blog post on One-Pagers from the Cult of Pedagogy. If you don't have a way to deliver curriculum, like Google Classroom or Canvas, see if school can give you a way to do a mass email to parents and students. If you have parents signed up for Remind101, you can use that. For writing practice, students can write a story. Any story. You can give them a picture or image to start with and let them write about it. Remind students that capitalization and punctuation still matter. For those kids without internet, they can hand write stories in their journals. Their parents can take a picture and email it to you. Here's another idea. What if your student pretended they were a character in the book they are reading. A new character of their own creation or one that's already in the story. They could write their own version of how they would interact with the other characters. This could be in a diary format, story format, a letter to another character in the story, or some idea the student comes up with. Whatever you end up giving your students, remember that any practice reading and writing will help them. Even if they aren't getting direct instruction every day or learning new content, they will still learn. They will still be learning from what they read. Empathy for others, problem solving and knowing they aren't the only person who feels awkward or different - this is what stories teach them. If they read non-fiction - they'll learn information that can widen their background knowledge about the world. If you feel overwhelmed by all of this, reach out to other teachers, either from your own school or on Instagram, Facebook or email. I'll leave my links for all of those things in the show notes below. Take some time for yourself and your family. Write a little more. Read a little more. Walk around in nature, if you can. Well until next Sunday, stay healthy. Stay safe and enjoy your extra time with your family. Bye for now and happy Writing! Need help? In this highlight clip from ClassCast Podcast Ep.020, Jon Kasica, the Northeast Regional Sales Director in K-12 Education with Canvas Learning Management Systems, addresses issues related to accessibility and special education when working with a new LMS or with blended/distance learning in general. For many teachers, accessibility and Sp.Ed. issues are among the most serious concerns as we prepare to adapt to distance learning during the time of COVID-19. Here, Jon works to ease concerns and point to special features in the technology that can help all students. Support the show (http://paypal.me/TibbensEST)

"Instead of saying ‘I teach science’ they say ‘I have mentee students that I help through high school’. It's a very different mindset." "Let's design a way for you to get through this whole year of curriculum as fast as you want." "Some students we don't see very often because they're full time college students even though they're still in high school." In this episode, I talk with two PE teachers who are using the Canvas LMS to integrate student writing into their PE classes.
Mandy Froehlich is the Director of Innovation and Technology in the Ripon Area School District in Wisconsin and author of The Fire Within: Lessons from Defeat That Have Ignited a Passion for Learning. This collection of stories from educators describes how adversity is met with strength and everyone grows as a result. Furthermore, Mandy is a Google for Education Certified Trainer, ambassador for Canvas LMS, a keynote speaker, presenter, and PD lead.In our discussion, Mandy and I (Chris) spoke about the dangers of the stigma surrounding mental health and its specific detriment to teachers and students. Often, teachers are put on a pedestal - being seen as heroic (or for some, godlike) - and facing trauma is both unrealistic to account for, as well as dangerous to the psyche of "teacherhood."Furthermore, we talk about the steps teachers can take to ensure they are well equipped to deal with trauma in the classroom, as well as simple actions that can have drastic impact on students' lives.
