S7E7: Navigating the New AI Frontier feat. Mark Sunday

Today we are starting our series of conversations about Artificial Intelligence and how it's changing the way we learn, work, and even play. AI is a hot topic with the potential to do a lot of good. But there are also a few pitfalls that we should all be aware of.Joining the show to help us start making sense of it all is Mark Sunday. Mark spent 20 years as the CIO at Oracle/Siebel, and prior to that role, he spent 10 years at Motorola. Retirement hasn't slowed him down one bit. He is still very engaged in the tech industry and currently serves on the boards of Vutility, Quantum Metric, Chassis, Kaltura, and 1440. He is also a member of the Eccles Advisory Board here at the David Eccles School of Business and was appointed by the Governor to Utah's STEM Action Center. He sits down with host Frances Johnson to dive into the evolution of AI technologies, the challenges of bias and discrimination in AI data, and the opportunities AI presents for enhancing human productivity. Emphasizing the importance of retraining and upskilling, this episode highlights the steps organizations and educational institutions must take to integrate AI into their curricula and work environments.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University fm.Episode Quotes:Examining the risks of AI9:00 When I just type the word “Google,” it comes up with stuff that's relevant. Like, for me, I'm a big Michigan football fan, so Michigan football, AI, [and] a number of other topics. I like that it's showing me stuff, but I hate, hate that, based on what people have demonstrated they like,  it's really limiting what information and news and opinions that people get to experience. So, I think it's created an incredible amount of divisiveness  within our country. While data can buy a bias, but also using real data, and then just repeating patterns, whether it was hiring male engineers,  whether it was  suggesting that Black inmates are more likely to create repeat crimes  or just creating a filter bubble where we're only exposed to opinions that support or reinforce opinions that we've had, I think is hugely problematic. How should individuals and institutions respond to the rise of AI?11:42 We've always faced this, whether it be computers or the internet just has to change. Yes,  jobs are eliminated, should be eliminated.  It was underemployment to have people pump your gas, and then, when it became legal in all states except for Oregon, until very recently to be able to pump your own gas, I look at that as underemployment when people aren't reaching the potential of the contribution that they can do.  So, what's going to happen is roles are just going to have to change. We need to be aware of that. As individuals, we need to take personal responsibility. But also, as organizations, we need to invest in retraining because there are a lot of new jobs that are created—AI trainers, data scientists, ethics officers. But we're going to have to upskill and adapt.Despite the risks, Mark urges students to embrace AI's game-changing potential.21:11 We need for our students to be the very, very best at leveraging this technology. It's game-changing. It's as if calculators came out, and when I went to school, nope, we're going to have to select the slide rules, or computers came out and it's going to do the work for all of us, or the web came out and now people can do Google searches.  This is far, far bigger.  In fact, when we are recruiting for our new dean for the business school, I'm convinced that higher ed will change more in the next 10 years than it has in the previous 100. And AI is going to be the reason for that. And so, as we think of what we're going to be as a business school, as we think of what we're going to be as a university, we need to be prepared for this huge, huge transformation.Show Links:Mark Sunday | LinkedInOracleKahlert Initiative on Technology - The David Eccles School of BusinessSTEM Action CenterDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) • InstagramEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) • Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

This episode features an interview with Lisa Bennett, CMO at Kaltura, a company that provides live and on-demand video SaaS solutions to thousands of organizations around the world, engaging hundreds of millions of viewers. In this episode, Lisa talks about the new world of repurposing your content and how marketers can improve their content strategy and outcome measurement. She also talks about how she thinks about “brandformance” and ensuring that you are walking the walk, as a marketer.Key Takeaways:It's easier than ever to repurpose your content across channels, maximizing its impact. Marketers should be thinking about this, instead of just constantly generating new content without thinking critically about its delivery and impact. You can focus on “brandformance”, brand and performance marketing, even without a huge budget. To do so, you need to collaborate with the c-suite to determine the best go-to-market strategy. Marketing is constantly changing and the new norms are not set. It's a new world, in a lot of ways, and we will have to find these new ways of marketing. Quote: “It feels as if, to a degree, we're generating content and not necessarily measuring it well enough. And then moving on to the next piece of content, and the next piece of content, and the next webinar, and the next event, and the next thing. And there's so much that actually can be repurposed, which is definitely becoming a trend now with AI because it's so easy to do. So, maybe before people didn't repurpose content as much, and video especially, because it was complex. It wasn't so easy to do. But now, you take a tool like Kaltura, not only have your event or your webinar, and then repurpose it, put it into social, put it into blog posts, put it into whatever you need and get all the data on it. So, that's an example of kind of this new world that we're looking at.”Episode Timestamps: *(04:22) The Trust Tree: Brandformance and strategizing with the executive team*(18:05) The Playbook: Maximizing the impact of events by repurposing content *(29:35) The Dust Up: Communicating and having a partner in crime*(32:09) Quick Hits: Lisa's quick hits Sponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com, the #1 Conversational Marketing platform for companies that use Salesforce and the secret weapon for pipeline pros. Think about the last time you read a piece of content that truly resonated with you. It could have been a news article, a blog post, or even a social media update. Now, consider what made that content impactful. Was it the way it was written, the story it told, or how it connected with your experiences? This brings me to a crucial aspect of marketing – the art of storytelling and the responsibility that comes with it.In my career, I've seen how powerful content can shape perceptions and influence decisions. It's not just about putting words on a page and filling your site with content to hopefully appease Google's relentless algorithm; it's about crafting narratives that engage, inform, inspire…and truly serve an audience. And who better to learn this from than someone who has practiced the art of storytelling in both journalism and marketing? So I sat down with Nohar Zmora, SVP of Brand and Strategic Marketing, Kaltura (https://kaltura.com/). Kaltura is a public company with 750 employees that trades on NASDAQ and had $168.8 million in revenue in 2022.Zmora manages a team of 25 in the company's 40-person marketing department, and works “super, super closely” with her “better half,” Roi Kaufman, VP Growth, Kaltura.Stories (with lessons) about what she made in marketingHere are some lessons from Zmora that emerged in our discussion.Don't just make ‘content,' take a journalistic perspective and produce impactful materialBalance long-term brand vision with short-term performanceLearn how a team ‘breathes,' evolves, and adaptsStorytelling has magic and beautyActively listen while collaborating with the business and Sales to create effective marketing strategiesHave continuous and profound dialogues with stakeholders to achieve successRelated content discussed in this episodeMECLABS AI (https://meclabsai.com/) now has expert assistants – copywriter, project planner, marketing professor, and social media pro. Ariel came from engineering, he had been a product leader for quite a few years and then made the transition into sales. Initially when he moved into sales, he was running product marketing. And he thought sales was so easy, you just get all of the factsheets and  battle cards and the information on the features and capabilities and share that with the prospects that they will buy it. Of course, he learned quickly he was wrong. Running a sales team taught him that sales was so much more and luckily he learned before he started his company. That mindset shift is what prepared him to at first do the sales himself and then build a sales organization at Second Nature AI. He learned two very important things as he moved from founder led sales to hiring a team. First, in an early stage company you have to hire a different type of seller. They have to have passion for the product and they have to know how to do full cycle selling without all the resources of a big company.  He told me, you have to hire full cycle sellers - salespeople who don't need the support of a large marketing and sales team.  They need to be able to adapt on the fly. So that is what he did and then he learned the second thing, you have to have inbound leads. Even with the right salespeople, if there are no leads sales don't happen. Listen to hear the lessons that helped him grow sales. Chapters:00:00 - Artificial Intelligence That Trains Your Salesforce? 07:48 - The Genesis of Jenny AI 10:53 - The First Customers Input 15:19 - Scaling Sales and the Team 26:32 - Using Second Nature to Train and Assess Sellers 28:15 - Marketing Ahead of Sales Hires to Increase Inbound 32:55 - The Sales Feedback Loop 36:15 - The Next ChapterAbout Our Guest:Ariel Hitron is the CEO and co-founder of Second Nature. He ran global sales teams with dozens of reps, built playbooks and training sessions, and earlier in his career, developed and brought to market multiple software products, generating tens of millions of recurring revenue and used by millions of consumers. As the CEO of Second Nature, Ariel is able to merge his passion for sales, tech, and product development, by applying AI to enable large B2B sales organizations to scale up and get systematic about their sales coaching.About Second Nature:Second Nature helps salespeople have better conversations.Using AI-driven role play, sales professionals can practice in a safe space, and improve their performance and confidence by gaining real-time, personalized feedback.Social links:https://www.linkedin.com/in/arielhitron/https://www.linkedin.com/company/second-nature-ai/ You can learn more about and connect with Alice Heiman in the links below.Website: https://AliceHeiman.comConnect with Alice on LinkedIn

While this could mean we'll see a really cool platform come from this “merger,” most likely it'll be bad for all of us. Look for your license fees to increase dramatically. Then, what do you mean by “AV design?” What does it mean to be an AV designer? How much time are you spending doing documentation? How much is too much? Justin just wants to avoid questions, Larry would rather think of cool concepts than create drawings, Jamie hates CAD, Marc hates all documentation, and Chris loves all documentation (in fact, he's working on a reflected ceiling plan right now). Finally, what do we all think about eliminating traditional AV cabling and equipment just because we can? Sure, it might not be best practice, but could it be considered “good enough practice” for our spaces? This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help bring the global unemployment rates down. My guest is Shay David, Co-founder, and CEO of Retrain.AI Shay is a serial entrepreneur who brings many years of experience in dreaming up products and making them a reality: from concept to market, from slideware to hundreds of millions of dollars in sales. He co-founded of Kaltura where he helped define the future of video - thereby taking responsibility as CRO, then GM, and today as a member of the Board.  Prior to that he co=founded Destinator Technologies, a mobile-GPS-navigation software, and consulted on open systems to Fortune 500 companies Today he's the Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Retrain.AI a company founded on the vision to make a measurable impact on global unemployment rates by helping 10+ million users find meaningful career opportunities and help enterprises future-proof their organizations. Their mission: To inform, empower and redefine the way enterprises hire, retain and grow their employees.  And this inspired me, and hence I invited Shay to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the Talent Development market and why the best strategy for managing HR & talent management today sadly is: "We'll do tomorrow what we did yesterday." Shay share's his vision of how to solve the global talent problem at the core. He also shares his secrets on how to create a sustainable advantage and what needs to be in place to shape a software business that people not only start talking about but keep talking about.  Here's one of his quotes:  Let me ask you, for any organization that you ever worked for when was the last time you logged in to a corporate learning network and expected to actually learn something? The answer is that never happens. Right?  When was the last time that you get an email from HR that actually had important career advice for you? Again, that never happens.  When was the last time that a candidate that a company submitted a resume and got a call within 15 minutes saying we've processed your request, we think we understand who you are, we have two questions, and we want to schedule an interview for you for tomorrow? Again, that never happens.  But this is not a joke. This is a problem affecting billions of people every day, the systems that are intended to manage talent acquisition to manage talent organization, and learning and development, those systems are failing. And the cost of that failure is catastrophic.  During this interview, you will learn four things: Why having a shared image with your customers about the future state of the world is critical to creating momentum That a way to understand whether you are on the right track is to ask your customers to articulate in one sentence how you give them immediate value Why it's not about finding product-market fit - but keeping product-market fit. Why, in order to succeed, you shouldn't think about technology, regulations, or money. That always comes second For more information about the guest from this week: Shay David Website Retrain AI Subscribe to a Daily Value Inspiration Stressed by the thought of 'not enough' traction? In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Dani Weinstein, Senior Director of Customer Community and Growth at Kaltura. Dani is a Community Builder, Strategist, and Advisor that enables customer success. In one of his previous roles before the pandemic layoff, he was the Head of Global Community at Domo, a business cloud that empowers organizations of all sizes with BI leverage at cloud scale in record time. At Domo, he deployed and scaled their community in English and Japanese and cultivated community advocates through gamification to become Domo brand ambassadors. Localized communities are tough to get started but keeping them buzzing with level interactions is an even bigger challenge. In this episode, Dani and David take us through when to start and how to best manage large localized communities. Gamification has been a major contributor of engagement for Dani's previous communities so his tips and tactics to keep your community members engaged are tried and tested. Who is this episode for? Managers of large global/multilingual communities Three key takeaways: 1. Managing Contribution in Communities: Let superfans talk to your product teams and celebrate their contribution, gamify their contribution so they don't lose motivation, and then create a private space for them. Start with one space and then as the conversation starts siphoning, create more spaces based on what conversational directions members regularly take. Starting with too many spaces may lead to spreading your community team too thin. 2. Internationalization of Communities: Calibrate the business needs and understand the landscape of potential community users in a new language. An existing and active audience of customers and leads in a new language is necessary before expanding your community to the new language. The more members you have in your community that speak that language, the more dedicated resources and money you will need to manage its complexity. However, the localized community may not need all the bells and whistles of your largest English-speaking community. 3. Managing Multilingual Content in Localized Communities: Great content in English (as judged by managers and superusers in the localized community) needs to be translated into localized languages for language-specific boards. You can use the Google Translate Widget if your company doesn't have enough resources to scale the translation effort. Notable Quotes: 1. “These are your people. And so you want to be able to develop that more intimate relationship with them. They could also provide tremendous insight on what they're seeing because, at the end of the day, they become part of the extended team.” 2. “You really have to start small. And so we really forced at the very beginning, very few boards around conversations. And then over time, you can actually see the customers dictating, not necessarily your support, product, and sales teams.” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would that food be? Pasta Marinara. 2. What's the most impactful book you've ever read or a book that you love to give as a gift to others? “Winning Ugly” by Tennis coach Brad Gilbert. 3, What language do you wish you could speak and why? Russian because his family's roots go back to Russia. He's fluent in Hebrew and conversational in Spanish and German and even knows a word or two in French, Dutch, Arabic, and Italian. 4. What's your wildest community story? He gave an award to a brand-new Domo Admin who wore a superman costume that matched his display picture in the community. A brand new customer later, during happy hour, asked Dani about taking a “selfie with superman”. 5. Have you ever worn socks with sandals? Never. 6. Who in the world of the community would you most like to take out for lunch? Holly Firestone of Venafi. 7. What community product do you wish existed in the world? A tailored localized experience so that you can consume your content and engage in the experience you want. 8. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? A community where they traded recorded cassette tapes of concerts by the Grateful Dead rock band. 9. One Tweet-sized life advice you would give to the world on your deathbed? Seize the day, travel, see the world, learn another language, experience another culture, and connect with different types of people.

Dani Weinstein, Senior Director of Customer Community and Growth at Kaltura, knows how to build global communities - and he's done so for the companies where he's worked. Strong online customer communities drive engagement as much as gathering regularly at the softball field.   It's fascinating to hear him discuss what drives successful global communities - numbers of members, language, thought leaders and more.  “Yala yolo” - listen to this episode and learn what that means!   Connect with Wendy - https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendypease/ Connect with GUEST - https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniweinstein/ Music: Fiddle-De-Dee by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com
