In Episode 183 of Jake's Happy Nostalgia Show, our guest is puppeteer and director, Matt Vogel! Matt's puppetry career started as an understudy for the Coca-Cola Polar Bear, before joining Sesame Street in 1996 as a Muppet performer. For many years, he was Caroll Spinney's understudy for Big Bird before fully inheriting the character, as well as inheriting characters like Count von Count and Mr. Johnson. With The Muppets, Matt performs Constantine and '80s Robot and took on the roles of Kermit the Frog, Floyd Pepper, Uncle Deadly, Sweetums and others. He also puppeteered on Bear in the Big Blue House, Between the Lions, Oobi and many more!
It was the holiday season and I've got the idea that the Sesame Street characters would make a good addition to the festivities. So, I attempted to call the Cookie Monster, Big Bird and the Sesame gang, or Muppets as you might call them. As luck would have it, the man who answered the phone was Caroll Spinney, the voice of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. Caroll was on Sesame Street for 49 years, retiring in 2018. He was earning over $300,000 at that time. To this day, I'm not sure if Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, was in the office with Spinney. But Kermit the Frog made a mysterious appearance on the show. By the way, Caroll got his name because he was born the day after Christmas.
After dedicating the show to Mark's wife, Mom, Mary Palkowski, the guys get into a up and down crazy show. First they look at the stuff they missed the last two weeks like the New Jersey Devils firing John Hynes, the passing of Caroll Spinney and more. Then the wrestling talk begins with WWE releases, suspensions, hall of fame inductions and even thief. Afterwards they discuss AEW signing Kris Statlander & Melanie Cruise, ACH drama and more. Finally in a busy week as they bring you preview of ROH Final Battle, NWA Into The Fire, a quick look at the early matches for the December 18th NXT/AEW shows and WWE TLC. All that and ranting, raving and much more. Merry Christmas everyone!

A beloved woman in a posh Connecticut town goes out for a jog, same as she does every day. Along that route is an immense estate owned by the puppeteer, Caroll Spinney, who played the iconic “Big Bird” and “Oscar the Grouch” characters on Sesame Street. After failing to return, police searching for the woman find a literal blood trail leading directly to Big Bird's estate … and an immaculate Chinese pagoda on the property. Soon, all eyes are following that bird—and yet neither he - nor the woman - are anywhere to be found. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Noel MacNeal is a puppeteer who has performed in various Henson productions, working on Sesame Street on-and-off since 1982. His most well-known work has been his portrayal of Bear, the lead character of Bear in the Big Blue House.Born and raised in New York City's Central Harlem, he began his puppetry career on the television series The Great Space Coaster (taking over from John Lovelady as Knock Knock) and later made his way to Sesame Street, joining the show as a "puppet wrangler."MacNeal's first Muppet performance was a supermarket cashier in a Grover sketch; MacNeal flubbed his one speaking line, to tell Grover that his register was closed and to go to another line, which resulted in his character getting a close-up in a pick-up shot.MacNeal's other Sesame roles have included several full-bodied Snuffleupaguses, including Snuffy's mommy at various points, and his daddy in the unaired "Snuffy's Parents Get a Divorce." In the feature film Follow That Bird, he performed Madame Chairbird and doubled for Caroll Spinney as Big Bird in a scene where he's running from Bert and Ernie's plane. MacNeal has puppeteered Big Bird on several other occasions, such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition to performing, he has played an active role in hiring and training puppeteers for local Sesame Street productions in Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Jordan, Palestine, and India. During MacNeal's time on Bear in the Big Blue House, he served as principal performer, director, and wrote a few episodes. In 2005, he reprised the role of Bear for Breakfast with Bear. His more prominent non-Henson credits include the baby dragon Magellan on Eureeka's Castle, Leon MacNeal in The Puzzle Place, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. He also puppeteered on Between the Lions (taking over Lionel for the last two seasons), Blue's Room, and Oobi (Kako). MacNeal spent a stint as host (and writer) for Sprout's The Good Night Show and has puppeteered on more adult series including 30 Rock, Oz, Chappelle's Show (in the "Knee High Park" spoof of Sesame Street), and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He is the resident puppeteer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As a writer, he contributed scripts to The Puzzle Place, Eureeka's Castle, Gullah Gullah Island, The Magic School Bus, and Cyberchase. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Judy Rothman Rofé is an Emmy-winning writer, producer, and lyricist behind some of the most popular children’s television programs in recent memory. Growing up a fan of musical theater, as well as rock and folk music, Judy’s songs have appeared on such programs as “Sesame Street” (sung by the late “Big Bird” puppeteer Caroll Spinney). Judy wrote and developed such series as “Madeline,” “Angelina Ballerina,” “Camp Candy” (with the late John Candy), and “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures.” Judy co-created the Netflix series “Julie’s Greenroom” with Julie Andrews and her daughter, Emma. Judy’s current series is “Norman Picklestripes” on Universal Kids. In this interview, Judy discusses the creative process of collaborative songwriting, the joys of having Julie Andrews sing her lyrics, and the time she informally interpreted for Fidel Castro and Gabriel García Márquez at a Sundance Film workshop in Cuba. She also discusses writing the “Neurotic Parent” blog and the offshoot book, “The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to College Admissions.”

Okay, let's wrap up our tribute to the pop culture legends we lost in 2019. (We've been drinking so many shots in their memory that we're almost out of coffee. And that frightens us.) Part 2 includes more movie stars (Peter Fonda, Sid Haig, Danny Aiello), sitcom stars (Valerie Harper, Bill Macy, Philip McKeon), rock stars (Eddie Money, Ric Ocasek, Ginger Baker), and, uh, Star Trek stars (DC Fontana, Aron Eisenberg, René Auberjonois). There are even a couple of beloved performers from bizarre 1970s variety TV (which did not get more bizarre than The Brady Bunch Hour and The Star Wars Holiday Special). And from children's TV we have Russi Taylor (the voice of Minnie Mouse), Jack Sheldon (the voice of Conjunction Junction)... and Big Bird himself, Caroll Spinney. So hang on, kids, and we'll get through the whole list together. And hey, if you need cheering up, Squirrel Appreciation Day is this week too. You know what to do.
Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 60th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Happy New ... What Year Is This Again?" I open with comments on recent celebrity deaths including Marie Fredriksson, Philip McKeon, Caroll Spinney, and under Cross Connections, a retrospective of René Auberjonois, highlighting his appearances on "Benson" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." I feature the appearance of the series premiere of ABC's "Life on Mars" in my collection, and include an expansive reflection of the connections I draw from that show through my formative media consumption, through "Barney Miller," "The Unusuals" and "Detroit 1-8-7" and potentially "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." In my Classic Collection, I talk about the series premiere of "Sanctuary," a Waco-themed episode of "Criminal Minds," a promo that turned up for the Mouse River Players' production of Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite" I did with Kymn Quill in Minot, and series I encountered while plowing through my archives to get into my new binder, including "The West Wing," "Six Feet Under," "Fringe," "Eli Stone" and "My Own Worst Enemy," as well as highlights running up to the 2008 election. In my Current Collection, I talk about the 12th season premiere of "Doctor Who," a whole bunch of music videos from the '80s and several movies including "The Revenant," "Fathom," the "Flatliners" remake, "Next," "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," "Stand By Me," "Gremlins." Then in What I've Been Watching, I share some thoughts on "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" from across four decades of storytelling. Finally, in "By the Numbers," I talk about a couple milestones, first on hitting episode 60 in this podcasting effort, and then the somewhat more significant milestone of breaking into Binder No. 5. At about 1,700 hours on 835 discs in my Classic Collection and some 1,800 hours on 295 discs in my Current Collection, I've cataloged nearly 3,500 hours on more than 1,100 discs in my media collection, which feels like a good amount of progress. Binder No. 3 took about a year, and this past one took about 10 months, so even my pace is improving. All that said, I'm now in Binder No. 5 of thirteen, so ... definitely a ways to go yet. Cheers!

As the smoke clears from shazbazzar’s ongoing battle with the chipmunks, Sheldon Norton and JediShua help clear shazbazzar’s vision by providing insights into some aftershocks of Star Wars that could have catapulted Disney into the modern age of science fiction with the last movie made “the old-fashioned way”. It’s perfect 20/20 vision in the first episode of 2020 this Monday morning! Sad NEWS Jack Sheldon of SchoolHouse Rock fame dies at 88. Caroll Spinney from Sesame Street dies at 85. We Love Our Cereal… …and dad jokes on cereal containers’ labels that our Roving Spoonster discovered over the holidays. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Sheldon, Shua, and shaz recount their experiences watching The Rise of Skywalker for the first (second and third) time before studying some Star Wars Aftershocks from 1979. The Black Hole After the blockbuster success of Star Wars, filmmakers rushed headlong into the cinematic “space race” in hopes of capitalizing on the success of George Lucas’s zeitgeist. Even Disney was not immune to the attraction of the stars above, embarking on a quest the Mouse had never before undertaken. That’s how Disney found themselves pulled into the inescapable gravity of a huge budget and PG rating of The Black Hole. In a quest to discover answers, Disney tells the story of how German scientist Hans Reinhardt maintains his ship, the Cygnus, next to a black hole, planning to plunge the ship into and through the dark monstrosity in his quest for knowledge: specifically, what caused the cause that created the known universe.
