Ari - conflict in activist spaces

Freedom of Species

Our guest on today's show is Ari, and we're talking about conflict in activist spaces and in community group settings.      Ari (they/them) is a community organiser, mediator and support worker who is passionate about exploring the transformative potential of generative conflict and accountability work. Working primarily in community organising settings, Ari believes that how we relate to each other directly impacts our political capacities, and that although large-scale political organising is vital, most change happens at the relational and community level. Their work is informed by abolitionist and transformative justice frameworks, which are ways of being and organising rooted in indigenous knowledge and BiPoc communities in which there have historically been other ways of dealing with conflict than the models white supremacy culture teaches us today. Authors and organisers who have inspired them greatly are Andrea Ritchie, adrienne maree brown, Mia Mingus, Mariame Kaba, Dean Spade and many more. When not organising workshops or supporting comrades in conflict resolution, they enjoy learning about generative somatics, dancing and moving their body and supporting community events. They grew up in Germany and are currently living on unceded Wurrendjeri Woi-Worrung Land.    Links: A really helpful resource is the booklet Working with conflict in our groups: A guide for grassroots activists produced by Seeds for Change UK. *Content Warning: This episode of Doin' Time may contain audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died, and discussion of Deaths in Custody. This special Doin' Time program is a dedication and tribute to the much loved and honourable Uncle Ray Jackson, born 27 March, 1941 and died on April 23 2015. He was a Wiradjuri warrior who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and human rights for Aboriginal people, and much more. Our first Tribute to Ray is Joseph Pugliese longtime activist and much loved guest on Doin Time, and close friend of Uncle Ray Jackson.  We will hear from his loved ones throughout the show.We will also interview Carolyn Jackson daughter of Uncle Ray. She has been a much loved part of the show since 2015 when her father passed away. Ray is missed by Carolyn, and her beautiful family.Lastly, we will bring you an interview with Rob from Monday Breakfast. On Saturday the 26th of April around 450 activists attended a counterprotest in the name of trans liberation. The action was countering the reactionary 'WOMEN WILL SPEAK' rally, organised by TERFs and white nationalists. A similar event held last year by the Women's Action Group, an organisation dedicated to spouting transphobia, was attended by members of the National Socialist Network. A group of trans and queer people, antifascists, and other allies disrupted Saturday's action by making noise and dancing to music in numbers vastly higher than that of the transphobic rally. Police set up a designated area during the day and used these powers to force activists, many of whom are disabled, to remove their masks before searching them with a wand. VicPol later used brutal force against protestors who were chanting about Victoria Police's murder of Somali man Abdifatah Ahmed in Footscray two weeks ago.  Doin' Time spoke to Rob Harrison, a proud non-binary, transgender and queer person, who attended the rally and witnessed the police violence. They are a co-host of the Monday Breakfast show at 3CR Community Radio. I invited Rob on to the show today because Uncle Ray was very committed to fighting police powers, and always stood in solidarity with our trans siblings. Rob gave an eyewitness account of the rally, and the police brutality.

To unpack that claim, Eric spoke with secretary of the Retail and Fast Food Workers' Union, Josh Cullinan. On Tuesday the 1st of October a picket will once again take place outside AW Bell, a manufacturer which makes parts for F35 striker jets here in Naarm and supplies them for countries using the planes all over the globe. F35s are currently being used to drop bombs in Palestine, Yemen, and Lebanon -- to name just a few places. Rob spoke with an anonymous attendee ahead of the picket to unpack AW Bell's response to previous pickets, its inclusion of Lockheed Martin's mentorship program, and the local community's response to learning AW Bell is complicit in genocides. The picket takes place at 145 Abbotts Road in Dandenong from 5AM.  Stay tuned for next week's show which will be wholly dedicated to talking about Palestinian resistance and contextualising October 7th within a larger history of Israel's genocidal conquest of Palestine.Songs played: Going up the Mountain (Ya Taali'een ‘ala el-Jabal) - Reem Kelani No Warning - Inkabee ft. Welcome to another iteration of the Monday Breakfast show, broadcasted live from 3CR Community Radio in Naarm./Melbourne.  Last week the Victorian Government under Jacinta Allan backflipped on its promise to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 in so-called Victoria as part of its Youth Justice legislation passed this week. It is worth mentioning that the move coincides with the Country Liberal Party in 'Northern Territory' pledging to reinstate spit hoods and lower its own age of criminal responsibility to 10; in 'Western Australia' a seventeen-year-old Indigenous teenager died in Banksia Hill Detention Centre, marking the second death of a child in custody in the state in less than a year. To help us unpack the legislation introduced here in Victoria, Rob spoke with Monique Hurley, Associate Legal Director at the Human Rights Law Centre. Speeches from the Sunday Free Palestine Rally on the 25th of August:Legendary Aboriginal activist Uncle Robbie Thorpe gave a passionate speech about colonialism, racism and the parallels between Australia and Palestine. Audio captured by Tom McLaren. City of Melbourne Councillor Jamal Hakim spoke on his campaign for Lord Mayor, committing to disclosing all campaign donations in real time.We then hear Christy Cain speaking at the CFMEU mobilisation against "independent" government administration on Tuesday 27th August, outside Fair Work Commission offices in Exhibition St. The crowd stretched from the corner of Flinders and Exhibition down to Trades Hall.  On Tuesday last week supermarket giant Coles announced its annual financial results, reporting a post-tax profit of $1.1billion, an increase of 2.1 percent from the year before. Despite this, Coles Group's Chief Executive Leah Weckert continues to insist that household financial pressure is 'front of mind' and defends the company's profit margins. To help us understand more about the conditions in which a supermarket makes so much money, Rob spoke with the Secretary of the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union, Josh Cullinan.Songs played: Radical Seed - Catherine SatourTook the Children Away - Archie RoachWhite Tears (Land Back) - Eden Fine DayAnother War (Feat. Its location, its design and its well-thought out objectives combine to make it one of the most imaginative and sympathetic public places in Australia. Dr Judith Buckrich's book, The Making Of The Victorian Pride Centre, details not only the building of this now-iconic centre and its gorgeous architecture, but also provides an overview of the history of LGBTIQ+ people in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, in a beautifully photographed and edited volume. To go into the history of the Pride Centre, we were joined by Jude Munro, inaugural chair of the Victorian Pride Centre, and, Nicholas Henderson, sound curator at the National Film and Sound Archive and curator at the Australian Queer Archive. To interview our guests, we enlisted the help of James McKenzie, longtime broadcaster on 3CR Community Radio with the show In Ya Face.

Fergus Watts' professional AFL career came to a premature end in his early 20s following multiple injuries. While Ferg was initially unsure where to go next and who he was without football, he went on to found Bastion, one of the largest independent marketing agencies in Australia.  Ferg is now the CEO of The Reach Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to inspiring young people to be themselves and to build better connections – with themselves and others. He credits an early interaction with the AFL great, Jim Stynes (at a Reach school workshop) as giving him the resilience to forge a path forward.  Ferg is today's guest on our radio show Brainwaves where he will talk about his life after footy, his career and The Reach Foundation.  Join host Evan Douglas-Smith and tune in at 5pm (AET) on 3CR Community Radio! https://www.3cr.org.au/streaming Ferg is today's guest on our radio show Brainwaves where he will talk about his life after footy, career and The Reach Foundation.  Join host Evan Douglas-Smith and tune in at 5pm (AET) on 3CR Community Radio!
