Thriving Across Sea, Air, Land, and Space. In this week's Team Never Quit episode, we are honored to host a true hero of our time, Captain Chris Cassidy. With a decorated dual career as a U.S. Navy Captain (SEAL) and NASA Astronaut, Captain Cassidy's journey across the sea, air, land, and outer space is nothing short of inspirational. Captain Cassidy shares his remarkable journey from the U.S. Naval Academy to becoming NASA's 15th Chief Astronaut. He delves into the transition from serving as a member of the U.S. Navy SEALs to embarking on spaceflight missions, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and perseverance in the face of challenges. As a proven leader of diverse teams, both in the military and at NASA, Captain Cassidy provides invaluable insights into effective leadership. Drawing from his experiences as a commander of the International Space Station and various military deployments, he highlights the significance of collaboration, communication, and developing trust in achieving common goals. Captain Cassidy empowers the never-quit mindset and supports others on their journey to success. He emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community and serving as a source of inspiration for future generations. As we look to the stars and beyond, his story serves as a reminder that with determination and leadership, anything is possible. Join us for an unforgettable conversation with Captain Chris Cassidy, as we explore the depths of the ocean, the heights of space, and the limitless potential of the human spirit. In this episode you will hear: • Looking for a way to pay for school is what led me to the Navy. (5:58) • In a small town in Maine, people play football and soccer, and Friday the season ends, on Monday basketball starts, and when that season ended, baseball started. (6:41) • I didn't even know [the SEALS] were a thing. I just knew I could be in the Navy and they would help me pay for college. (7:18) • If it's the head of human resources voice you hear [on the phone], you're not gonna be an astronaut, but if it's the chief astronaut, like the commanding officer, then it might be a good call. (23:01) • Come to work with a good attitude and grind, and you'll be asked to do things, and doors will open. (26:47) • I wanted to go to space. It was really that simple. Once I got selected, I just wanted to do my first mission. (29:11) • If you don't have a little pucker factor, you don't understand the physics that are going on behind you. (34:15) • A rendezvous to the Space Station is kinda like that line drive throw. We have to launch at exactly the right moment when the Space Station is in the perfect spot in the sky, so that we rendezvous together. (38:43) • When you land on water, it might be softer, but the mission is not over until you're on the ship. (45:21) • [After a space mission] you're very uncoordinated, very wobbly, very unstable. We're not allowed to drive a car for 2 weeks, or ride a bicycle for2weeks. It takes about a month to be normal again. (45:47) • If you have a fire, you gotta put it out. If you can't put it out, you close hatches, and isolate compartments. If it overcomes the whole thing, you gotta leave. (50:04) • There's no air molecules around you, so, if you kick, you're not pushing against anything – there's no force to react against. Why Astronauts Never Wash Their Clothes

Bright Side

Astronauts have a pretty good reason for not washing their clothes – it's all about saving water! In space, every drop of water is precious, so they can't afford to waste it on laundry. Instead, they wear their clothes until they get too dirty or smelly, then simply discard them. These used clothes become part of the space junk orbiting Earth. To keep fresh, astronauts often wear multiple layers, sort of like a never-ending fashion show with undergarments. And when they're done with a piece of clothing, it's disposed of during reentry, where it burns up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Making his way from Earth to the cosmos, CAPT Cassidy was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 2004. Assigned his first spaceflight in 2009 as a mission specialist aboard the STS-127, he became the 500th person in history to fly into space, as well as the second-ever SEAL. In subsequent flight experiences, CAPT Cassidy was assigned to Expedition 35 in 2013 as a flight engineer and Expedition 63 as Commander of the International Space Station in 2020. While at NASA, CAPT Cassidy accumulated 378 days in space, 54 hours, and 51 minutes of spacewalk time, placing him in an elite group of four U.S. crewmembers with 10 spacewalks. He was named NASA's Chief Astronaut in 2015, a role in which he was responsible for flight assignments, mission preparation, and on-orbit support of U.S. crews and organizing astronaut office support for future launch vehicles. He served in this position for two years before returning to normal flight status. In May 2021, three-time space veteran CAPT Cassidy announced his retirement from both NASA and the Navy, transitioning into his current role as CEO and president of the National Medal of Honor Museum.Among CAPT Cassidy's awards and honors is the Bronze Star with combat “V,” the Presidential Unit Citation for leading a nine-day operation at the Zharwar Kili cave complex on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, a second Bronze Star for combat leadership during Operation Enduring Freedom, and the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal. He completed the 2014 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, and spent three weeks cycling through the Amazon rainforest in 2017. CAPT Cassidy earned his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1993 and his Master of Science in ocean engineering from MIT in 2000. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from Husson University in 2015, and a second honorary Ph.D. from the University of Maine at Augusta in 2021.Exclusively represented by the Leading Authorities speakers bureau, CAPT Cassidy's talks explore the habits of effective leaders and how they can motivate their teams to overcome the obstacles in front of them, foster a high-performing culture of trust, and thrive in clutch moments when everything is on the line. With a talent for storytelling and well-timed humor, he shares his inspiring journey from the U.S. Naval Academy to becoming NASA's 15th Chief Astronaut — motivating audiences to develop a never-quit mindset to accomplish their goals and help others along the way.

This week Kevin and Stewart have the absolute honor of sitting down with Chris Cassidy, a recent retiree from the Navy following 28 years of service.   After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Chris served for a decade with the U.S. Navy Seal Teams where he served in Afghanistan merely two weeks after the September 11 attacks.  Chris then served for eighteen years with NASA where he participated in three space missions including 277 days in space, 10 EVAs, served as ISS Commander for Expedition 63 which included the historic docking of the Crew Dragon Demo-2.The team talks through the journey of his life, including his present station as the President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, located in Arlington, Texas. The Medal of Honor is American's highest recognition of valor in combat as established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861.  The Medal of Honor commemorates those who were willing to risk their lives to protect and serve our country and the ideals we hold most dear. The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation is dedicated to sharing the stories and values of these incredible heroes—and to inspire America to build upon their legacies and the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas will serve as the only national institution dedicated to the stories, impact, and legacy of the service members who went on to become Medal of Honor recipients. The National Medal of Honor Museum is being constructed by Linbeck, broke ground on March 25, 2022 , and will open in Arlington in 2024.Words simply don't do justice to the experiences, stories, and wisdom that Chris has and shared during his time on the podcast.  You're going to really enjoy the conversation with Chris.  // Show Notes //Medal of Honorhttps://bit.ly/3arM8wgNational Medal of Honor Museumhttps://bit.ly/3zhPRXLhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/mohmuseum/The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumashttps://amzn.to/3GRQJnBYou Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For, by Kyle Carpenter https://amzn.to/3NnAoth

Today we have a Combat Story first with our first Astronaut who spent over 377 days in space and completed 10 spacewalks (where he's actually out in space in nothing but his suit): Chris Cassidy. Before he joined NASA, Chris was a Navy SEAL and was one of the very first sent into Afghanistan in 2001 after 9/11. There's very little Chris has not accomplished. He attended the US Naval Academy, received a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has two Honorary PhD's. As a SEAL, Chris earned a Bronze Star with Valor and a Presidential Unit Citation for combat in Afghanistan. He was NASA's 14th Chief Astronaut, which is the head of NASA's Astronaut Corps and is the principal advisor to the NASA Administrator on astronaut training and operations.Chris is incredibly humble given his accomplishments and it's no surprise he is now President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, where he's leading efforts to build out an iconic Museum for MOH recipients, a Leadership Institute, and a Monument on the National Mall.I hope you enjoy this view from Space from such a down to Earth man as much as I did. According to new data, Zack Snyder’s Justice League beat out The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in opening ratings. The two superhero stories, which launched respectively on HBO Max and Disney+ before the weekend of March 20, were both highly anticipated by their respective fandoms. Reception to both the Snyder Cut and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has been mostly positive so far, though the latter’s status as a limited series means it has a lot more still to show. Did Zack Snyder re-open the portal to the Snyderverse?

Link: https://discord.gg/ZzJSrGP Virgin Orbit to attempt 1st launch of LauncherOne rocket this weekend Link: https://www.space.com/virgin-orbit-first-launcherone-rocket-test-may-2020.html LOS ANGELES — Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit is targeting the coming weekend for its first attempt to launch a demonstration payload into space aboard a rocket released from beneath the wing of a Boeing 747. Sunday will mark Virgin Orbit's launch debut, if all goes according to plan. Virgin Orbit plans to launch for the very first time just a few days from now. The company is targeting Sunday (May 24) for its Launch Demo mission, with a backup opportunity on Monday (May 25). The four-hour window will open each day at 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT), Virgin Orbit representatives announced today (May 20). Launch Demo will be a huge milestone for Virgin Orbit, which has been developing its air-launch system for five years. That system involves a modified Boeing 747 jet called Cosmic Girl and a 70-foot-long (21 meters) rocket known as LauncherOne, which is capable of delivering about 1,100 lbs. (500 kilograms) to a variety of destinations in low Earth orbit. During operational flights, Cosmic Girl will drop LauncherOne at an altitude of about 35,000 feet (10,700 m); the rocket will then make its own way to space. Cosmic Girl and LauncherOne have flown together on many "captive-carry" tests, and the plane even dropped the rocket (on purpose) during one jaunt last July. But Launch Demo will mark the first time that LauncherOne fires up its engine mid-flight and aims for the heavens. There's certainly no guarantee that the rocket will make it all the way to orbit during Launch Demo, which will take off from Mojave Air and Space Port in Southern California. Failure is the norm for inaugural launches of new spaceflight systems, Virgin Orbit representatives said, stressing that data collection is Launch Demo's chief goal. A Sunday or Monday liftoff for Virgin Orbit — which has already secured a three-launch, $35 million deal with the United States Space Force — would serve as a nice lead-in to another big spaceflight milestone. NASA plan to sample asteroid Bennu delayed by coronavirus pandemic Link: https://www.space.com/osiris-rex-asteroid-sample-collection-coronavirus-delay.html After delays from the coronavirus pandemic, NASA has picked a date for its spacecraft to snatch up a chunk of space rock to bring home. NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft mission is now expected to perform its first asteroid-sampling attempt to occur on Oct. 20. The procedure had previously been scheduled for August, but the mission team has decided to delay the maneuver because of limitations meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus-borne respiratory disease COVID-19. "The OSIRIS-REx mission has been demonstrating the very essence of exploration by persevering through unexpected challenges," Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA's associate administrator for science, said in a statement. "That spirit has led them to the cusp of the prize we all are waiting for — securing a sample of an asteroid to bring home to Earth, and I'm very excited to follow them through the home stretch." In response, the team shifted the sampling schedule by two months, with the second rehearsal now planned for Aug. 11 and the sampling itself planned for Oct. 20. Either way, the spacecraft will remain at asteroid Bennu through the middle of next year, then embark on a two-year journey home. OSIRIS-REx's sample container will deliver the space-rock sample back to Earth on Sept. 24, 2023. Show Stuff Join the fan chat on Discord! Hello. I am Dr. John Dacey, coming to you with my weekly podcast, “New Solutions to the Anxiety Epidemic. This time, I’m going to be talking again about the second step of my COPE strategy, originality. I remind you that this step of the model calls for you to be as creative as you can in organizing a series of tactics, designed just for your own personality. I promised that I would help you to become more original, and this is the second time I have tried to keep that word. To begin with, it is wise to assess your own creative abilities. Regardless of whether you are one of the most original people you know, or are not very high at all in that trait, everyone can move up. Everyone can get better at being creative. It will be very much to your benefit if you design your own imaginative plan for becoming less anxious. You will need to get some benchmark of your overall ability. This is hard to do, not only because creativity is somewhat ephemeral, but also because it is difficult for us to be objective about how gifted we are. Nevertheless, we have make a try. To begin this venture, fill out what I call a “personal shield.” This is like a family crest, or coat of arms, except it doesn’t exist. You wil have to design it yourself. Imagine, if you will, a shield that has been divided into five sections. The crest has a line down the middle, and two horizontal lines dividing the shield into thirds. Furthermore, you need to know that the vertical line is not extended into the bottom section. Therefore, there are five sections. You can see a picture of the shield in the transcript (blog) that accompanies this podcast. Or you can just make a list of the five traits I am asking you to put in each box. The five traits are: What you consider your greatest strength. Your worst weakness. Your greatest personal achievement. Your worst screw-up. Your most hoped-for lifetime achievement. The most imaginative thing to do would be to draw symbols of your answers, as you would see on such an escutcheon. However, if you like, you could just answer the questions.       Your Personal Crest -- Creativity 1 Best Strength 2 Worst Weakness 3 Greatest Personal 4 Worst Screw-up Achievement 5 Hoped for Lifetime Achievement Personal Shield:  _____________________________________________     Give careful thought to filling in your shield, as it will be the foundation for step 2 of your COPE strategy. Okay, it’s time to move on in your quest for original thinking, by writing a haiku. And what is the definition of a haiku? It is a very short form of Japanese poetry typically characterized by these qualities: The essence of haiku is "cutting" (kiru). This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a kireji ("cutting word") between them, a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation, and colors the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related. Traditional haikus consist of 17 on , in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 on, respectively. Although haiku are often stated to have 17 syllables, this is incorrect, as syllables and on are not quite the same. Fortunately, however, it is not necessary for you to understand the difference. Here is a haiku poem I composed some years ago: Hidden deep inside, My soul, gleaming like diamonds. My whole truth lies there. Do you like it? Oh, well, you can’t please everyone. And now, to further your understanding of original thinking, I offer you the “two-string test.” Your goal is to find a way to solve this unusual problem. Imagine a large room at least 30 feet square and 10 feet high. Attached to the ceiling are 2 strings, each of them 9 feet long. The strings are 14 feet apart, each of them 7 feet from the center of the ceiling. Your job is to discover how to tie the two strings together. As you would easily recognize if you were to look at the drawing of the problem in today’s transcript of this podcast (p. 5), the two strings are too far apart for you to reach them both at the same time. Somehow, you need to get hold of one of the strings while holding the other, so you can tie them together. That’s it! There is one item available for your use in finding the solution—a wooden mousetrap. Mouse traps are only about four inches long so they are not long enough so that you could use one to reach the second string, no matter how tall you are. When you think of how you can tie the strings together, please tell your solution to a friend before you look at the answer [or write it in the space below].   Were you able to figure out the answer? The mousetrap may be used to solve the problem:  it can easily be attached to one of the strings as a weight, then swung away from the problem solver. The other string is grasped, and then the first string caught as it swings back. Now they may be tied together readily. Many people are unable to reach this solution because they cannot imagine mousetraps being used for something other than their usual purpose. That’s called “functional fixity”: the function of each entity in the person’s world is fixed in their minds, so that they cannot think of any other use for that object. Here's an example of what we mean: a graduate student in my psychology class studied the problem and said, “I’ve got it!  The answer is with the mousetrap. You catch a bunch of mice until you get one that isn’t seriously hurt. You make a pet of it, then train it to be a ‘trapeze’ mouse. It will then jump up on one of the strings and swing back and forth until it is able to swing over to you while you are holding the other string!” This is a good example of what we mean by functional fixity: this student believed that a mousetrap could only be used to capture mice. His solution could conceivably work, but it is much more complicated than simply using the trap as a weight. Is this another example? One young nun in my class attempted to solve the problem. She decided that the mousetrap was really not necessary. Lifting the apron of her religious habit (the long formal dress nuns used to wear), she seized the over-sized rosary beads hanging from her belt. She swung them over her head while holding one of the strings. The beads caught onto the other string and, beaming with self-satisfaction, the sister pulled the string caught by the rosary beads, and tied the strings together while those watching applauded!  Although this is an imaginative method for solving the problem if you happen to be a nun, it wouldn’t work for most of us. It is not, however, an example of functional fixity. She used her rosary beads for a purpose quite different from what they had originally been attended. In that sense, she was probably more creative than the young man in the previous example. Let me wind up this episode with an example of original thinking provided to us by   astronaut Chris Cassidy. With the coronavirus in mind, a reporter asked him how he dealt with the extreme isolation of being encapsulated on the International Space Station. His response: “If everybody just kind of lounges around and doesn't get up until 11:00, and nobody's brushing their hair or their teeth, not only do you look crappy and you feel crappy, but you just get in that funk. So sticking to a Monday-through-Friday routine is probably the most basic thing . . .” Pretty good idea, right? You will need more than a couple of very good ideas like this one to settle your anxious mind, and it will be best if they all come from you. Talk to you next week.

Invent life tomorrow. That’s the central mission for Joe Coughlin of MIT’s AgeLab, who says we all need to rethink everything about how to serve adults living longer and longer.Nowhere is this calling more pressing than in healthcare, where people are reimagining the “doctor’s office,” increasingly turning to care from the comfort of their own home and getting tested before they get sick.At the same time, the global outsourced healthcare logistics market will grow to $102 billion by 2021, fueled by soaring growth rates in Asia and the Middle East — eclipsing the uptick in the United States. This provides new opportunities for companies of all sizes looking to enter new markets. That’s why UPS continues to expand its global footprint of healthcare distribution facilities and capabilities. It’s also why the company hired Chris Cassidy, a former senior logistics executive from a leading pharmaceutical company, as president of Global Healthcare Logistics Strategy. In part two of their conversation, Cassidy and Coughlin explore how care providers and patients are driving the need for a new brand of healthcare logistics — requiring an ecosystem of companies meeting not just needs but wants.Coughlin dispels the three greatest myths about the aging population, as well as the greatest barriers for companies looking to serve those driving the longevity economy.Inventing life tomorrow, Coughlin and Cassidy argue, is now more about delivering life-defining experiences than accruing stuff. And it’s not just about living longer. As people around the world live longer and healthier lives, how will companies adjust their strategies to delight aging customers who carry more purchasing power than ever before? Not enough business leaders have the answer to that question, argues Joe Coughlin, Director of MIT’s AgeLab, a multidisciplinary research program that works to improve the quality of life for older people and those who care for them.In a two-part conversation, Coughlin examines the ripple effects of a global society transitioning from a mindset of sickness prevention to the pursuit of daily wellness. Chris Cassidy, UPS President of Global Healthcare Logistics Strategy, is spearheading the company’s efforts to innovate across the healthcare and life sciences sector by enhancing specialized end-to-end supply chain services. He joins the conversation to offer UPS’s perspective on the future of healthcare — including the rise of telemedicine and what this means for the role of the delivery driver — and question Coughlin about the most pressing changes across the industry. They ponder the definition of “old,” dig into the delivery of a next-level healthcare experience and explore the future of retirement itself. We’re all getting older. But we’re not settling for age-old solutions. Businesses must adapt to thrive in the longevity economy.

As I’ve said all along, we need the media to play this role in a vibrant democracy. Perhaps he could go to Washington DC and give a seminar to his infatuated colleagues in the White House press corps? Look at what he has accomplished in the course of two weeks; May 26: Earlier pensions OK’d for 911 staff; Plan called “A raid on the retirement system” "Thanks to a subtle change in job title, some North Shore emergency dispatchers will be able to retire five years early under new rules approved by the Essex Regional Retirement Board. By reclassifying police and fire dispatchers as signal operators, the board recently allowed the group to retire with maximum benefits at age 60. That puts them into an elite group of municipal workers who are eligible for retirement before age 65 - a benefit typically reserved for those with hazardous jobs, such as police officers, firefighters and electrical line workers." June 1: Panel: DPW workers can retire at 55 "Department of Public Works employees could retire at age 55 — 10 years early — under a bill at the Statehouse proposed by the Essex Regional Retirement Board and a Lynn lawmaker. The legislation would give DPW workers the same status as police officers and firefighters, who can retire at 55 because of the inherent dangers of their jobs. It would also cost taxpayers, who’d be on the hook not only for the extra 10 years of each employee’s pension but for the added salaries and health insurance costs of their replacements." June 8: Essex Retirement Board reports huge loss "The Essex Regional Retirement Board posted a 33 percent loss last year, the worst of the 107 retirement systems in Massachusetts. The board made news last month for allowing dispatchers to retire at age 60 and for pushing legislation to let DPW workers retire at age 55. It’s also come under fire for its lobbying and travel expenses. Now its dramatic losses will have further implications for the taxpayers who help fund the system. Much of the losses were racked up after the board invested last summer in mortgage-backed securities -the very instrument largely blamed for bringing down the U.S. economy." They invested in mortgage backed securities last summer? What was the pitch? I know my house is on fire, I’ll give you a great deal if you buy it? Don’t fret, they have a sophisticated plan to get the money back. According to Chief Operating Officer Lilli Gilligan, She said the board will call the city of Northampton — which had the best returns of 2008 — to find out which strategies it used. Yea, that’s the ticket, chase last year’s winners! A brilliant strategy indeed! June 10: Pressure builds on retirement board, as some want out "Town managers from about half the communities that pay into the Essex Regional Retirement Board will meet this week to discuss their concerns about the system and ways to reform it, including the possibility of pulling their funds out altogether. But in a pre-emptive strike, the retirement board is calling its own meeting 90 minutes earlier with all members of its Advisory Council to broach similar topics on its terms. The meetings come amid a turbulent time for the retirement board, which oversees the pensions of employees in Boxford, Hamilton, Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Middleton, Topsfield and Wenham." The key question is what are we going to do with this news? Are we going to read it and do nothing? Or are we going to read it and pick up the phone and let our voices be heard by the people in power? Are we going to whine and complain and then vote them all back for another term?
