Chris Roy is a lifestyle coach and personal trainer specializing in mindset, fitness, and nutrition. He is also a CrossFit L-1 trainer, father, and heart attack survivor who had been living a life of gluttony, substance abuse, and caffeine addiction. Chris got a wake-up call in May of 2019 when he had a heart attack in front of his daughter in a local coffee shop which left him fighting for his life at the age of thirty-three. Through dedication and education, he recreated his life and lifestyle to show others and encourage them to reclaim their health to live the life that they and their loved ones deserve. Chris describes his lifelong struggle with emotional eating and lack of self-awareness. After his heart attack, he began making small changes in his lifestyle, starting with a regime of eliminating sugar, increasing his water intake, supplementation, and walking. By making these simple changes, in just a few short weeks he noticed a significant improvement in his overall health and well-being. That launched Chris on a journey of self-awareness, self-reflection, and continuing to make better choices. Armed with his faith along with his own small team of fitness and nutritional experts who helped him create a lifestyle which continued his positive trajectory of health and fitness, Chris realized that he was capable of so much more than he ever thought possible, and now he helps others do the same. Doobert is an online software platform that is custom-built for pet rescuers and rescue organizations. Its founder, Chris Roy, has two passions: animals and aviation. He started flying animal rescues — transporting shelter dogs from high-kill locations to areas where they were more likely to be adopted - many years ago. After transporting hundreds of animals, Chris utilized his IT skills to put together a system to coordinate organization and communication within animal rescues and shelters. From there, his passion for the cause only grew as he learned more about the world of animal rescue and the challenges facing these organizations. Today, he's talking about his newest venture, Doobert Forward, which allows animal lovers to shop for their usual pet products while donating to shelters and rescues of their choice. EPISODE NOTES: Adopt & Shop
“How do we give tools to organizations so that they have revenue coming in on a regular basis?” This episode is sponsored in part by Kensington Books, Doobert, and Maddie's Fund. In this episode, Doobert.com's Chris Roy returns to the show to share some of the projects he has been working on since the pandemic. Chris is a tech guy who loves solving problems for folks in animal welfare. It has been several years since Chris was on the show and he is eager to share what is new at Doobert.com. Doobert Forward is a fundraising platform that works like Amazon Smile, but the percentage of the sale that is donated back to the organization is 5% vs less than 1% at Amazon Smile. Stacy asks Chris to share more details about the Case Management module and if it can help manage situations where a cat or litter of kittens might be turned away from one organization to be helped with another. Each situation turns into a “Case” so that it can be transferred to other organizations therefore potentially ensuring that everyone will get help in the community. In need of pet supplies? Shop and give back to animals in need at Doobert Forward online store! With each purchase, 5% goes to YOUR chosen shelter or rescue!
Those who have listened to my podcast for sometime will know that Chris Roy was a previous guest. He has come back once again to update everyone on a new and exciting launch which by the time this episode is aired will have been live for 5 days! The new project that Chris has been working on for sometime is the wonderful Doobert Store. Now many of you may wonder why this is so exciting but this is not just any store and is one with a difference! The Doobert Store will allow you as consumers to purchase pet food and supplies online with the click of a button, just as you would do with your regular shopping on stores such as Chewy or Amazon however Doobert as they always do are helping animals and so with each purchase a whole 5% will be paid to a nominated shelter, rescue organisation. You can purchase the same goods as you normally do but by choosing to use Doobert an organisation of your choice will benefit. All that organisation has to do is sign up to Doobert and that is completely free to do and once they are registered the money will surely start rolling in!Organisations who purchase their own food supplies through Doobert can even nominate themselves as the beneficiary of the 5% and so would receive monies back for buying their regular food or supplies. For anyone with pets they will know that they can easily spend a lot each month and so it makes it even better knowing that whatever amount you spend is being paid forward to help animals in need.Chris as always explains in detail how it works and it really is so simple! Rescues should enrol on the site and tell all of their supporters about it because all those $5 donations would and can amount to a lot over time.Check out the store at Doobert and see the products on offer and start shopping! Check if any of the shelters you support are listed and if not ask them why not! Happy Listening!Fiona XSupport the show

In this episode I had the pleasure of spending time chatting with the lovely Chris from Doobert. Chris filled me in on the incredible work he is doing , how Doobert works, how it began and most importantly who Doobert was.Chris is a technical genius and he has created an online platform which is ahead of its time and at the forefront saves the lives of animals! The strapline says it all "Helping You Help Animals" How does it work...?? People simply sign up and enter their availability for the roles they are interested in being involved with. This can be fostering animals, helping relocate them to new homes, volunteering in a rescue or shelter virtually or in person. Doobert is a very special tool and collates all the information which is entered by organisations or people and can coordinate everything through this tool.Rescue work can be difficult at the best of times but when there are restraints on resources and limitations it can make it even harder. This can put people off and even prevent them offering their time or help. To make this easier Doobert takes a lot of the complexity out of that and makes it easier to find those resources and help that is out there. One of the Doobert tools includes the coordination of animal transportation when relocating animals who have been adopted but with Doobert the stress is removed and replaced by the reassurance that the animal can travel safely from A-B to their new home and life that they deserve.Over 5000 animal welfare organisations are already signed up to Doobert but this number could be greater if everyone knew how it worked and how it can benefit and enhance the work they are already doing.Chris is such a joy to the world with the time and commitment he has dedicated and offered to make animals lives better. Please check out his website and see if Doobert can help you or a furry friend!Home - Doobert.comDoobert.com | FacebookThanks for listening!Fiona XSupport the show

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Doobert Founder and CEO Chris Roy. Described as an “Airbnb for volunteers and homeless animals”, Doobert is a software and app that connects animal rescue organizations with volunteers and resources that will help locate animals in need of saving, transport them to shelters, connect them with potential adopters, and provide them with homes. As a former pilot, Chris got involved with rescue organizations after a friend asked him to help transport dogs via an airplane to their shelter. Realizing that there was a lack of resources for rescue organizations to connect and access these animals, Chris took the chance to come up with the software as a database to address this issue. Chris and his team launched Doobert in May 2014. Today, Doobert is still growing as a software and is proud to support more than 5,000 organizations and 35,000 volunteers with the mission to provide animals the homes and families they need. “The more I discussed and socialized with [animal] organizations, the more we learned how to keep expanding the software.” - Chris Doobert Tune in to find out how technology and innovation can help save animals' lives! “The good thing about spay/neuter is one cat fixed: thousands saved. So you get one done, you can feel really good that night about what you've done. You don't have to have these big huge numbers to make a difference in your community, in your neighborhood.” This episode is sponsored in part by Humane Network, Doobert, and Maddie's Fund. Linda Chitwood is the volunteer director for the nonprofit charity Homeless Animals Relief Project (“HARP”), located in Senatobia, Mississippi. HARP's mission is to reduce cat suffering and overpopulation by providing free or very low-cost spay/neuter surgery to those with low income or caring for community cats. Since its inception in 1997, HARP has fixed over 20,000 cats. After moving from Memphis to rural Mississippi, Linda encountered a community without any animal welfare programs and she was compelled to take action. In her conversation with Stacy, Linda shares some of her experiences from her 25 years in animal welfare work and in operating a small nonprofit. Linda also discusses the book that she published, $5 For A Cat Head, which provides guidance on how to get started with TNR and what you can do as an individual in the community. This book also provides helpful advice in dealing with community members while trapping in different environments and other practical hands-on tips. In this discussion, Linda reminds us all to “never lose sight of the beauty and the wonder and the joy of the animals we're trying to help.” To learn more about HARP, visit their website. Linda's book can be found on BookBabyand the Kindle version can be found on Amazon. All of the proceeds from the sale of the book go to the animals served by HARP and will be used to fund spay/neuter surgeries. Marta Negro, a lifelong pet lover and avid traveler, faced a difficult task when the COVID pandemic forced her to return home to Spain without her dog. Fortunately, she was able to find a flight volunteer who could reunite her with her dog. Chris Roy is a brilliant tech guy who wanted to connect rescues and shelters with people who are willing to foster pets or offer to transport them to other cities. He planned the software, designed it, and implemented it himself. Rescues can sign up at Doobert.com (named for his late cat, Doobert) to showcase the animals they have ready for adoption. You can search for dogs, cats, horses, wildlife and so many more types of pets that are searching for their loving fur-ever home. Not looking to adopt? You can sign up to foster or transport animals, too! Taking a trip? Put your start and end point of your route into Doobert, and they can hook you up with someone who needs to transport a pet along your route. Would you be willing to do transport only on Wednesdays within 100 miles? Sign up! Do you only want to foster seniors or animals with medical issues? You can choose your parameters and help! They also accept financial donations to keep this service going! As Doobert is a non-profit organization. Chris works hard in tech to support Doobert, so he can help animals and rescues everywhere. We give this guy two paws up! EPISODE NOTES: Doobert

To mark international dog day, we are celebrating the tireless life-saving work so many animal lovers do across the globe, with ‘Doobert' aka Uber for dogs and the pilot-turned-orthopaedic-surgeon-turned-dog-shelter-rescuer. Doobert: Free Uber for dogs By day Chris Roy is an IT professional and by night and weekends, he's an avid animal rescuer, pilot and superhero who loves to dream up new ways that technology can help people help animals. Chris Roy started flying animal rescues, transporting shelter dogs from high-kill locations to places where they were more likely to be adopted. Doobert is a volunteer based Uber-like service with tens of thousands of volunteers across the US, that any rescue or shelter can use. It is kind of like match.com where rescues and shelters connect with each other and with volunteers who transport the animals wherever they need to go. By day Chris Roy is an IT professional and by night and weekends, he's an avid animal rescuer, pilot and superhero who loves to dream up new ways that technology can help people help animals. Chris Roy started flying animal rescues, transporting shelter dogs from high-kill locations to places where they were more likely to be adopted. But realizing that coordinating the ground and aviation legs was not as simple as it could be, he created a system to coordinate the trips . And he named it after his cat: Doobert. Doobert is a volunteer based Uber-like service with tens of thousands of volunteers across the US, that any rescue or shelter can use. It is kind of like match.com where rescues and shelters connect with each other and with volunteers who transport the animals wherever they need to go. The online platform has become a household name in the world of pet rescue, and it all started with a 17-year-old, 15-pound cat called Doobert. #1173 Chris Roy runs an amazing company called Doobert.com. Doobert is a technological solution that connects rescue organizations with transportation for rescued animals, foster homes, and more. The only issue is that Doobert needs to bring in more funds to keep running effectively and grow. Chris has tried Google ads and selling physical products, but they haven't quite panned out. How can he increase Doobert's income? We brainstorm a few methods for pulling in some much-needed cash — partnership opportunities, sponsorship opportunities, donation appeals, and more strategies. I can't wait to see how Chris incorporates these ideas! Show notes and more at SmartPassiveIncome.com/ap1173

It is our first Open Space Radio episode of 2021, and we’re so excited for another year of great conversations on the podcast. To start the year, we’re thrilled to be talking with a group of inspiring teenagers from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, who decided to take a middle school project and turn it into something way bigger that would provide them, and others, a safe space to participate in their favorite activity — skateboarding. They realized that access to public recreational spaces was critical, and decided to take matters into their own hands to create a safe, legal place to skateboard through the Lunenburg Skatepark Project. Our guests today, Mason Whitcomb, Aidan Moore and Griffin Caiozzo, along with their other teammates Aidan Swift and Chris Roy, noticed there weren’t any safe, legal places to skateboard in their community, and started a grassroots movement to build a permanent, concrete, public skate/BMX/scooter activity park on land donated by their town. Through a common interest in skateboarding and their school’s sponsored Genius Hour program — a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom — they were able to come up with the plan for Lunenburg Skatepark, which is soon becoming a reality due to their persistence, creative problem solving, community engagement and innovative fundraising efforts. Tune in to the full episode below to learn why physical activity through skateboarding is so important to Aidan, Griffin and Mason, and what life lessons they’ve learned throughout this process, as well as: How they came up with the idea for Lunenburg Skatepark. What their initial planning process looked like. What kinds of fundraising activities were the most successful. How they have engaged the community with the project. What advice they would give park and recreation professionals who are thinking about a project like this for a community space. What’s next for Lunenburg Skatepark, and more! Doobert connects volunteers (almost 30,000) with organizations that need them. These volunteers act as transporters, foster homes, photographers, food suppliers, you name it... and they use Doobert to specify how they are able to help. We support organizations (almost 5,000) with tools that they need to connect with and manage volunteers. Some of the organizations Doobert works with are Best Friends Animal Society, Assistance Dogs International, Rescue Transport USA, English Setter Rescue Association, and many more. Chris's vision for Doobert started as connecting the disparate organizations across the country to safely move animals to where they need to go for adoption or placement to adding fosters, feeders, TNR, adoptions, and more. The goal is to make it easy for potential adopters to find their perfect new family member online, complete the application and purchase requirements (like food, litter boxes, collars, etc...) and then safely deliver the animal to their new home. With more than 800,000 companion animals needlessly killed in the U.S. each year, more and more people are looking to adopt instead of buying through pet stores and breeders and Doobert is making a seamless experience possible by integrating the technology that the organizations need to connect them with the people looking to adopt and volunteer. Doobert is about supporting the ongoing relationships that volunteers want to have with organizations and the relationships that adopters want to have with organizations that helped save their animals. Doobert is looking for sponsors that believe in our life-saving work and that want to contribute towards completing our vision including no healthy and treatable animals dying in shelters when there are loving homes in other communities. Animal shelters should be resources to their communities and provide support including low-cost veterinary services, safety nets for families needing food and supplies for their animals, and education and professional support for the care of all animals in their community, owned or wild. The vision is to create a new revenue model for these shelter and rescue organizations that are not dependent solely on donations or government funding, and that supports how people purchase products and services for their pets. Technology is not the only piece of the puzzle however technology provides a significant enabler towards reaching these goals and bridging the gaps that exist today. We know our sponsors want to reach passionate animal lovers, both volunteers & professionals that are focused on helping animals and the people who care for them and we plan to be the company that provides that connection at every capacity. Five thousand feet up, pilots are flying some very important cargo across the country. It’s not people or packages these men and women have loaded into the back of their planes: It’s puppies – squirmy, soft and sometimes sad homeless animals who need a new leash on life. In recent years, rescue-pilot programs have taken off in the South and Northeast. Pilots, almost all of them volunteers who give their time and money to the cause on the weekends, shepherd homeless animals from high-kill shelters in states where adoption rates are usually low, like Alabama and South Carolina, and fly them miles away to animal rescues in the northeast or Central Florida. The animals, many of them young dogs, are adopted or fostered in places where more people are looking to find a furry friend to take home.click to enlarge Given their wings and the selfless mission to save lives, it might seem apt to compare these pilots to angels. But Michael Young, an Orlando rescue pilot who’s been transporting dogs via plane for the past seven years, says it’s all in a day’s work. “It’s a chain of people working together and us pilots are just one cog in the big wheel,” Young says. “We’re not the angels. We’re just the bus drivers. The angels are the people who pull the dogs and the people who foster the dogs and put them up for adoption.” Young has transported almost 1,000 dogs as a volunteer, flying the animals from Alabama to rescues around Florida. It’s a labor of love – one that doesn’t come cheap. Pilots usually end up spending $10,000 to $12,000 a year maintaining their planes, and Young says it costs around a dollar a mile to fly due to fuel costs, although many of the expenses are tax-deductible because of the charitable cause. Despite the cost, Young says it’s worth it to save the lives of animals who might otherwise not have a chance. Young says he even adopted two of the dogs he’s flown. It’s this type of dedication that Kate Quinn, executive director of Pilots N Paws, a South Carolina-based organization that connects pilots with shelters looking for volunteers to transport animals, says she sees in all her pilots. “These people are huge animal lovers. They’re so concerned with the animals and making sure they’re comfortable,” Quinn says. “We’ve learned that pilots are looking for a meaning to their flights. They’re looking for a reason to fly.” Saving the lives of 4 to 6 million animals that would otherwise be euthanized every year sounds like a pretty good reason. Quinn says that without the planes swooping in to pick up the animals at the 11th hour, many of them would have to be put down. There’s also an advantage to using planes as opposed to ground transportation to move the animals. When there are no pilots to help, dogs must be transported in car relays, constantly switching drivers and traveling in crates. On the planes, many pilots allow the dogs to roam freely. The trip by plane is much more consistent and comfortable for them. “The animals do really well,” Quinn says. “People are surprised to hear how well they do in the plane. The sound of the engine seems to lull them to sleep.” While the plane experience is better for the animals, the trips do present their own unique challenges, especially in Florida. “Flying in thunderstorms during the summer here is a challenge. It’s like Florida has the measles if you look at the weather radar, with all the red pimples,” Young says. “But I’ve learned to do it. The best analogy is like a soccer field full of snapping turtles. … We go fast. We go around it. We don’t go through them.” That’s not the only obstacle to getting the job done. Quinn points out that it takes a lot of hours and a lot of people working together just to save one dog. To improve the process, Milwaukee rescue pilot Chris Roy invented a software platform to connect animal rescues with volunteers. Doobert, named after Roy’s cat, includes a smartphone app to connect ground and airborne volunteers. “The idea came to me because it was so difficult to keep track of which transport requests I was involved with, which animals were on which transport, and who to contact,” he says. “I kept thinking there has to be a better way to do this, and so I decided to create it.” Even though he also works during the week as an IT project manager, Roy says that there is a major reason he and the other pilots give up their free time for this cause – to spread the puppy love. “The pilots and ground volunteers donate their time, vehicles and gas because they know that these animals deserve a chance at a better life,” he says. “They don’t ask for anything in return.” Young and Roy agree that the joy in the job comes from the love they receive from the animals they’ve saved. The thanks they get is spoken in the universal language of a wagging tail or a slobbery grin. “Many people may think I’m crazy, but these animals in a rescue-relay transport know you are saving them and bringing them to a better place,” Roy says. “You can see the look of relief in their eyes, and see the smiles on their face when they meet you.

EPISODE 113: FOLK DEVILS & MORAL PANIC On episode 113 of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show, authors T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas discuss an old concept in folk culture called moral panic. The most recent manifestation is the Momo Challenge. Momo is a horrific bird statue that first appeared in Japan, and according to the new urban legend, she assaults children and advises them to commit acts of self-harm. Momo is the most recent folk devil—the central antagonist causing moral panic—but the phenomenon goes back to the Salem Witch Trials, even further. In particular, Fox and Phil have kept their audience updated on evil clown sightings, and they discuss other relevant trends such as the satanic panic of the 1980s, the spurious demonic nature of Dungeons & Dragons and other events in hysterical society. Fox also plays the last part in his paranormal trilogy about Philadelphia’s most notorious haunted house, The Baleroy Mansion. The final chapter tells of dark heart of the house: the blue room and the curse of an antique chair. Anyone who sits in this chair soon dies, joining the choir of agitated souls who still roam the mansion. Then the hosts finish the show talking about A Time for Violence—a new noir and horror anthology soon released by Close to the Bone with stories from T. Fox Dunham, Chris Roy, Joe R. Lansdale, Richard Chizmar, Tony Knighton, Isobel Blackthorn, John A. Russo and many more out on May 1st. Preorder on Amazon today! EPISODE 107 BEST HAUNTS OF 2018 Tonight’s episode features the best ghost stories and interviews done by horror authors T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas in 2018. This is a great episode for current fans to enjoy or new fans to get an idea of what this dark audio magazine is about. On this show of highlights, the Philadelphia horror hosts feature ghost stories like I Met a Ghost in Gettysburg from journalist and author, Don Allison; The Suicide House, told by paranormal investigator Tina Marie Ronan; and T. Fox Dunham’s personal tale of an encounter with a ghost bus that hunts for the lost in Philadelphia. Chris Roy pens a remarkable noir story set in the south, Marsh Madness, narrated by British folksinger, David Walton. Fox interviews horror-baker Andrew Fuller, who was on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship, and psychic Michael Bodine, who discusses his supernatural abilities and his encounter with real vampires. Then Fox & Phil close the show with paranormal investigator Bill Reap who shares an unusual EVP that he gathered from the grave of a famous personality in children’s television. It’s been a wonderfully spooky year at What Are You Afraid Of? And the hosts are planning some compelling and scary content for the coming season.

He's from South Mississippi and currently resides in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. So the audio might not be perfect. You'll probably hear a lot of background noise, but let's hope for the best. I would also like to mention that Chris has edited along with Andy Rausch A Time For Violence. This is his latest project. It is a love letter to the great anthologies of yesteryear. And the theme is violence. And I'll let Chris do the describing from here. Thanks for being here today, Chris. It's great to have you on. Chris: [00:01:55] It's nice to be here today. Debbi: [00:01:59] I'm glad you're able to be here and I think it goes without saying that your experiences have informed your fiction. Can you tell us a little bit about exactly how your experiences have inspired you to write? Chris: [00:02:18] Oh, sure. Some of my earlier works of crime fiction were short stories that had two characters I created named Razor and Blondie. This was about 10 years ago. They were based on personal experiences selling drugs, stealing cars, identity theft, that sort of thing. And also a lot tough crimes preferred from criminals while incarcerated. And so I had just had all this knowledge about crimes and also I found that when I was started writing these stories I like to create crimes, create new crimes. So I had all of this this knowledge to draw on and experience to draw on and that is where my original stories came from. Debbi: [00:03:16] Would you say to your genre is more geared toward noir or thriller? Chris: [00:03:26] It's noir definitely. My earlier works were thriller. There were anti-heroes and they had all these difficulties and there was usually a happy ending. The stuff I write now, terrible things happen to really good people and the endings are usually not very good. So it's definitely noir right now. "My earlier works were thriller. There were anti-heroes and they had all these difficulties and there was usually a happy ending. The stuff I write now, terrible things happen to really good people and the endings are usually not very good." Debbi: [00:03:52] I was going to say, yeah, I read your story Her Name is Mercie. I think I'm saying that right. and I liked it very much and your other book Shocking Circumstances. I've just started. And I'm interested that you focused on female protagonists. Can you talk about what prompted that? Chris: [00:04:19] Okay. When I was studying books on writing, when I started getting serious, the first story that I wrote after that was Shocking Circumstances and I was thinking you know I have a limited knowledge of skills that I can put into my characters you know. I was a mechanic on the street. And I'm a tattoo artist now. I studied engineering, metal fabrication. Boxing. I actually teach boxing and have for many years in here. You can hear in the background, there's a guy beating on his bag now. You hear that? That's one of my guys. I train. He's getting a warmed up for a workout. We're going to work out afterwards. After the podcast. So I had these skills, knowledge that I can put on my characters and s...
On the show today we welcome Chris Roy, the host of The Professionals in Animal Rescue podcast! This podcast is focussed on highlighting the work of different individuals in the field of animal rescue and shining a light on the different roles that rescue operations need. This pursuit was born organically from Chris’ work as a pilot and while carrying out a particular job he started to realize how drawn he felt towards using his flying skills to help animals more directly. This decision then opened up a whole avenue of ideas, the clearest of which was his wonderment at the need for people with every skillset in the animal rescue world. And so he decided to start documenting these stories in the form of a podcast! Chris’ story and perspective are truly special and inspiring. He has taken a personal exploration and turned it into a cause building vocation through which he is able to learn, share, and celebrate life in many different forms. In our discussion we cover what led to Chris selecting a podcast as his medium, his relationships with the animals he rescues and notably the steps Chris takes to set the mood for a great podcast. These ideas that Chris suggests are absolute gold for any hopeful podcaster out there, so get ready to take some notes! Key Topics: • How Chris became involved in animal rescue and started to use his skills in the field. (02:13) • Why Chris chose to use the format of a podcast for his cause. (04:53) • Chris’ experience of the efficacy of the podcast medium. (05:37) • The turning point for Chris committing himself to this cause. (08:01) • What its like to have animals as passengers! Interview! Chris Roy, Founder, Doobert.com "The concept behind Doobert was to automate those rescue tasks that can and should be automated." Chris Roy is a pilot, a Milwaukeean, a husband and owner of several cats and dogs, and the creator of Doobert.com, an online software platform for animal welfare volunteers and organizations. Although Doobert started as a hub to organize the transportation of rescued animals, it has grown to offer a wide variety of services, such as photography for shelters. Chris firmly believes that we can use technology to make people and organizations more efficient in order to save more animals, and he is hopeful and excited about the doors that technology will continue to open in the animal welfare world. His next step for Doobert is to design a module for community cat concerns, and is eager for any feedback or suggestions that those who work with these animals can give.
