Episode Summary In this raw and rumbling return, Madge gives you a microphone check from beyond the grave, welcomes Bissy the AI co-host who talks too much, and somehow makes a sincere tribute to dead podcasters while detailing one of the most dramatic dumps in Yeast Radio history. There's talk of chia, plungers, haunted turds, Simply Sara, haunted turds, necrophilia, blocked queens, and haunted turds. Did we mention haunted turds? Oh, and don't worry — Bissy raps. Highlights from “The Circle Game of Doody” Political Snark: Madge references Trump being president again and expresses frustration with the public's complicity. This is touched on both seriously and with biting sarcasm. TikTok Obsession: Ongoing discussion of how TikTok has replaced podcasting as Madge's main creative outlet — mentions of high-performing videos and content about bowel movements. AI Co-Host Drama: Bissy, the AI sidekick, struggles to keep up with Madge's vulgarity and gets scolded repeatedly for being too prudish or literal. Gastrointestinal Focus: Besides the epic bowel movement story, Madge explores earlier turd memories, fart analysis, plunger technique, and chia's bowel-altering power. Death and Memorials: This episode is framed by death — with the passing of Simply Sara, Archer, and Ramble Redhead being lovingly (and clumsily) honored. Forbidden Pizza: The eternal struggle of food, shame, and timing. Madge considers sneaking pizza while her spouse is away at a Lady Bunny concert. Theatrical Interludes: Madge breaks into dramatic musical moments, featuring lyrics from Evita, Cabaret, Yentl, and The Sound of Silence. Listener Callbacks & Archives: She attempts (and mostly fails) to dig up archival clips of old podcast friends, showcasing the ephemerality of early internet media. Fiber & Diet Culture Satire: Chia pudding, Fiber One trauma, and Madge's spouse's insistence on “breaking turds with your pussy” — all part of a deep dive into food, shame, and queer domestic life. Instrumental SING ALONG ! "The Circle Game" Written and released by Joni Mitchell 1970Joni said "This is a song about seasons, and circles, and time, and growing old, and growing young"Producer Renee Plays her Rendition on Piano + Guitar. Here Are The Lyrics: Yesterday a child came out to wonderCaught a dragonfly inside a jarFearful when the sky was full of thunderAnd tearful at the falling of a star. Then the child moved ten times  'round the seasonsSkated over ten clear frozen streamsWords like "When you're older" must appease himAnd promises of someday make his dreams. And the seasons, they go 'round and 'roundAnd the painted ponies go up and downWe're captive on the carousel of timeWe can't return, we can only lookBehind from where we cameAnd go 'round and 'round and 'roundIn the circle game.So the years spin by and now the boy is twentyThough his dreams have lost some grandeur coming trueThere'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plentyBefore the last revolving year is through. And the seasons, they go 'round and 'roundAnd the painted ponies go up and downWe're captive on the carousel of timeWe can't return, we can only lookBehind from where we cameAnd go 'round and 'round and 'roundIn the circle game. And go 'round and 'round and 'roundIn the circle game.VoiceRenee@charter.net

Why does focusing on your score often produce the worst results? Part of the problem is due to “perceived control.” It's the difference between being a passenger in a plane and driving a car—and understanding this concept can change your game.

We start with a tragedy, then a cautionary tale of the world not ready for a band. We then find more positive inspiration from an artist who delivers a huge seller. We end with a legend.  Janis Joplin dies just before releasing her magnum opus, “Pearl.” A band called Fanny is ready to rock, but a culture poisoned by the patriarchy isn't yet ready to accept them. Carole King makes Tapestry, a sincere, modest, and deeply personal album that hits huge and becomes a milestone for women. We complete the story with a profile of one of the giants of 20th Century Music, Joni Mitchell. We discuss her artistic and commercial peak in the early 70s with “Blue,” “For the Roses,” and “Court and Spark.” We admire all of these women for kicking down the door, and we celebrate the progress we've made since them, but there is still a long way to go. Now for some general remarks about the research and writing. To the best of our ability, we tried to center women in this chapter. We'll leave it to the listener to decide how we did with that. There's a diversity of opinion about this, but we think it's fair to say the second wave of feminism hits the crest during the period we are covering, and it is not at all a coincidence that women really start to make big and important contributions to Rock Music right around this time too. Roe vs Wade was decided right around here, about fifty years ago. We are painfully aware of the US Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe, stripping many millions of American women of their fundamental human rights to bodily autonomy and medical privacy. As we move forward with our chapters, we will document that half century of regressive backlash and how it got us here; it's part of the story. Like we often say, Rock N Roll reflects back on, interacts with, and affects the larger society. And vice versa. In the late Sixties and early Seventies, it seemed like the progress would be permanent, and that more progress was on the way. Some of us were naive enough to believe that. We would do well now to remember the words of the anti slavery activist Frederick Douglass, way back in 1857: This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand.

My child, wife, and I are sitting around the coffee table in the living room discussing the plan to take the car to the mechanic the next day. We describe this as going on an adventure to the child as a lingering holdover from isolation during covid, which seems to be fine because she enjoys car rides. What is different from the usual this time is that I am coming; normally car adventures are my wife driving, because she runs most of the errands. The following (simplified) dialogue takes place: Child: "Dad, can you come in the car tomorrow?" Me: "I am coming in the car tomorrow." Child: "Really?! You are coming?" Me: "Yes." Child: "Mom! Did you know Dad is coming in the car tomorrow?" Mom: "Yes! He is coming with us tomorrow." Child: "Dad! Mom knows you are coming tomorrow! You are both coming!" Me: "Yes!" Keep in mind we have all been present for the whole conversation. We are sitting around a coffee table. None of us are more than three feet from each other. It struck me that what my daughter was doing was trying to explicitly track what her mom and I knew. I expect this falls somewhere under the theory-of-mind stage of development, but what stuck out to me was the procedure she undertook, which looked something like three loops: One loop with me, of establishing the fact and confirming the fact. A lateral loop to mom, of establishing that mom knows the fact and confirming that mom knows the fact. A lateral loop back to me, of establishing that I know that mom knows, and confirming that I know that mom knows. The looping strategy reminded me of Circle Games, and only after this did it occur to me that the object of the game was common knowledge. My child has been playing these kinds of games for a while now, on reflection; but recently they have grown in frequency and elaboration enough that I began to wonder why she seemed to be spending more time on what I instinctively treat as mundane details. The connection to common knowledge did not crystalize until this event. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateTom Rush's career is a wonder. After stepping away from record labels and major tours in the 70's, he's managed to cultivate a dedicated audience that has loyally shown up for decades. His relationship to music had a rocky start with a dozen years of unenjoyable piano lessons. Tom talks about his cousins, Beau Beals, who taught him ukulele and how to find joy and fun in music. Rush started college at Harvard as a marine biology major, but switched to English lit and kept his love of music and writing strong throughout school. In fact, he did struggle with focusing on studying due to his very frequent trips to The Club 47, which is right around the corner from the Harvard Square campus in Cambridge, MA. Tom actually was able to start playing around town and soon recorded an album, which was a novelty at the time. He became known as "the guy with the record."His sound started off very traditional, recording versions of Lowland Scots and Appalachian folk songs. After a few albums in, he started looking for new material to record and came across a few unknown songwriters for his 1968 album, The Circle Game. Tom Rush was the first person to record songs by unknowns Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Jackson Browne. After a few albums into the 70's, Rush was burnt out, his label dropped him and he needed a well deserved break. In the 80's, Tom reinvented his career and laid the foundation for what it could look like for an independent musician to thrive. He established The Club 47 Concerts at Boston Symphony Hall, an upscale event that allowed his fans to enjoy folk rock in style. He became a champion of up and coming musicians like Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. That nimbleness has followed him throughout the years and has proven most useful during the pandemic. Tom quickly created Rockport Sundays, his weekly video series where fans can support him via Patreon. Tom Rush! Still doing the damn thing in 2021!! Han producerer debuten Song to a Seagull, udsendt marts 1968. På daværende tidspunkt havde hun allerede skrevet klassikere som ”Both Sides, Now”, ”Urge for Going”, ”The Circle Game” og ”Chelsea Morning”, som hun drysser ud over de efterfølgende to album. 1. With credit due to Joni Mitchell for the lyric "captive on a carousel of time," the title of today's episode refers to two topics that come up in conversation for Wendy Sheridan, Mary McGinley, and Robin Renée this week, plus the sense of overwhelm that in times like these, can pervade the experience of current events. July 25th is an occasion for several remembrances and celebrations, including National Merry-Go-Round Day. Robin spotted a "Permit Pete" at the beach, and Wendy reveals her decision about running for political office. Later, we learn that it is Captive Nations Week, which gets nicknamed "Irony Week" because while the proclamation calls for freedom for all, it feels as if the United States is moving in the opposite direction. All three discuss the Helsinki Summit and contemplate pathways toward finding our most effective activism, reaching others about the importance of awareness of the political climate, and manifesting the best outcome for the 2018 midterm elections and beyond.   Buy Harlequin and Other Fantasies by Wendy Sheridan               See Robin Renée at Root Studio, Columbia, MD, Friday, August 10th                 Stay tuned for the new and improved MaryMcGinley.com!                 Listen to "Merry Go Round" by Lou Reed Listen to "The Circle Game" by Joni Mitchell
