POPULARITY
In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how the auditory and vestibular (balance) systems are essential for enhancing learning and improving focus. I explain how the auditory system captures sound waves and how the brain interprets these signals to make sense of the environment. I also discuss the use of white noise and binaural beats to support brain states conducive to learning, focus and relaxation. Additionally, I explain how the vestibular system helps maintain balance and examine practical tools to enhance auditory learning, cognitive performance and mood. Ever since the invention of the written word, there have been moral panics about how new technology corrupts our brains. But now — as the richest companies in the world pour billions into an all-out war for eyeballs — something very different is happening. So we talked to the author of a new book, "The Sirens' Call," about why a satirized nerd on MSNBC is an ideal authority on how Silicon Valley is exploiting the human condition. Plus: the significance of spam, the Cocktail Party Effect, HammerKing75, a court of Infinite Jest, the piglet advantage... and a hot take from Socrates. My guest this week is Erik Himel, who expanded his touring guitar career into hosting the hottest jam night in Hollywood, to producing a Las Vegas show, to custom music programming for private and corporate events. Erik's credits include Powerman 5000, the Russian supergroup Mumiy Troll, Alan Parsons, Eagles Of Death Metal, Puddle of Mudd, Candlebox, Robby Krieger, Michael des Barres, and many more. He was the longtime host of The Sunset Jam, which was the longest running residency show at the world famous Viper Room in Hollywood, grossing a million+ dollars and showcasing over 1500 performers and numerous sponsorship collaborations. He's also been a co-producer of 27 - A Musical Adventure, which is retrospective concert honoring the music icons gone too early at the age of 27. The show had a multi-year residency at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas with over 120 performances. During our interview we talked about playing music with lyrics you can't understand, the hack he used to get his first tour, his unique approach to running a jam night, creating a corporate event music business, moving to Paris and what the music scene is like there, and so much more. I spoke with Erik via zoom from his home in Los Angeles. On the intro I looked at how kids may be losing their love of music, and a new Ai headphone that nails the “cocktail party effect” .

SynopsisIn 1985, the musical world was celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Georg Frideric Handel. On today's date that year, Minnesota-based composer Libby Larsen, then in her mid-30s, was celebrating the premiere performance of her Symphony No. 1.Larsen titled her symphony Water Music and says its first movement was a deliberate homage to Handel's famous Water Music. As a resident composer of a state with over 10,000 lakes, Larsen admits her love of sailing also had something to do with the symphony's descriptive title.Since 1985, Larsen has gone on to write a few more symphonies, each with its own particular title. And she frequently gives individual movements of each symphony a descriptive tag. For example, one movement from her Solo Symphony (No. 5), from 1999, is titled “The Cocktail Party Effect.”Rather than the wallop of a stiff drink, Larsen says she means the ability of human hearing to pick out a single voice among the extraneous noise one encounters at a crowded cocktail party. “It's a kind of musical ‘Where's Waldo?'” she says. “In this case, Waldo is a melody, introduced at the beginning … then hidden amid the other music.”Music Played in Today's ProgramLibby Larsen (b. 1950) Symphony: Water Music; Minnesota Orchestra; Neville Marriner, cond. Ted Agon is a returning guest to the podcast. He's not your average author & speaker. He's lived in seven countries and set foot on five of the seven continents. The man's a global adventurer. Not to mention he served in the Vietnam War in the 1970s.At 79 years young, he's got incredible energy (& knowledge). He goes ballroom dancing five nights a week, calling himself a table-hopper. It's how he met the love of his life, Julie. My favorite part of the podcast is when he shares the pickup line that "worked" with Ms Julie—afterward thinking darn it, how come I didn't think of that line decades ago. Haha! Amazingly, prior to meeting, he & Ms Julie had been single for 27 & 23 years, respectively. He believes if you're looking for love—you will not find it—it must be spontaneous.Ok Ted, but some of us are going to go looking on that 7,243rd night going to bed alone. I kid, because Ted makes me feel that way sometimes. Lol (let's see if he texts me asking what "Lol" means:)Usually, he only texts me when he finds a Joe Rogan clip he thinks ridiculous or finds something that says men are dummies.Back to Ted's bonafides. He's the author of two remarkable books: The Human Key, which is a comprehensive exploration for those seeking knowledge, and The Learning Curve—a condensed version of the book for the modern reader with a shorter attention span.Ted has a unique ability to observe the simple things in life. His favorite quotes deal with simplicity. You come away from chatting with Ted realizing he knows what's important. It's all honed by his upbringing. Raised by a single mother. Limited resources. What they had was community and a profound love of nature. We discuss being blessed with different aptitudes. What sets Ted apart is his knack for clear writing, which of course is thinking. Or at the very least, enables you to identify holes in your thinking.Get ready for an insightful & inspiring conversation with my friend & neighbor, Ted.

There's a track on HAAi's upcoming debut album, Baby, We're Ascending, called "Louder Always Better." That kind of sums up her approach right there. (See also: "Biggest Mood Ever.") Since her first record, 2017's "Be Good" her approach to dance music has been to make as dense, overwhelming and uplifting as possible. Much has been made of her background in psychedelic rock, which definitely informs records like the muggy, intense Motorik Voodoo Bush Doof Musik, but it's not the whole story. A better point of reference might be DJ Harvey lost in the Australian desert, but comparisons are beside the point. At this point, HAAi is completely unique. The Australian producer has made quite a name for herself as a DJ in her adopted hometown of London, and while her album shoots off in all directions—from ecstatic rave-pop to sultry stunners—her RA Podcast captures the spark that makes her such a beloved force behind the decks. Weaving powerful techno from artists like Atrip and Piska Power with weirder, adventurous music courtesy of Cocktail Party Effect and Sha Sha Kimbo—plus a few tastes of HAAi's new album—it's an eclectic mix that's as windy and unpredictable as her records. Plus, it ends with classic track by The Cure. That's just good taste.

This episode I describe how our ears and nervous system decode sound waves and gravity to allow us to hear and make sense of sounds. I also describe protocols for rapid learning of sound and other types of information. I discuss sound localization, doppler effects (sound motion), pitch perception and how we isolate sounds in noisy environments. I also review the scientific findings on binaural beats and white noise and how they can improve learning. Other topics and protocols include tinnitus, sea sickness, ear movement, ear growth and the science-supported ways we can all accelerate learning using "gap effects". Our ability to hear patterns, recognize words and focus our auditory perception is thanks, in large part, to a very specific region of the brain, the superior temporal gyrus. It’s located just behind and above each ear. It’s the site of our auditory association cortex, in other words it’s the place that helps us understand language, speech and music.
