Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs. This week we are joined by Shannon Cruikshank. She is currently serving with the Royal Engineers in the British Army but is being used a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) at a Royal Engineers training establishment (essentially delivering PT to recruits) She's wanted to be a PTI for a long time but as we explore her journey it's clear it wasn't an easy ride. A battle with mental health and alcohol, a change of cap badge and a constant battle to operate in a male dominated environment, Shannon finally got her 'crossed swords' and qualified as an Army PTI. We of course start with establishing her top 3 gym peeves ranking them using our coveted super exclusive ranking scale. We then finish with secret questions...This was pretty wild as in Bills wisdom he asked you lot on Instagram 'without any context what would you ask this week's guest'. Great fun. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit! This week we are joined by 'TikTok Wizard' Spencer Cave. He's our youngest ever guest at 19 years old & he's been on quite the transformation journey. Growing up he was deeply unhappy with his appearance/size. He was bullied and this in turn effected his mental health. He decided to take action and unfortunately in his desperation to see change he made some decisions that were less than ideal. He now shares his story and training on TikTok hoping to inspire others in his peer group and beyond to start their own health and fitness journey. The episode also turns into a bit of an exclusive Q&A for Spencer as throughout he throws the odd gym related question at us! Does weight training stunt growth? Do you need to change gym routine every 6-8 weeks? Is my pre-workout good? Reference pre-workout - this goes on for far too long as Bill decides to analyse every detail of Spencers pre-workout! We really enjoyed this one and it was interesting to speak to someone of a different generation and see how they approach things and why. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? In this extended finale we explore whether or not the ENTIRE Fitness Industry is bad for you. Spoiler alert - it's a flipping mess! We asked you guys what you hate most about the fitness industry and then proceeded to rant about them for 90 minutes! (Mainly Tom lol.) A good mixture of funny and serious ones so should be a great listen! While we do insert humour throughout the reality is is that the fitness industry is in a right state at the moment and there needs to be some action taken to put it back on track. We are dealing with peoples health at the end of the day and this should not be partaken lightly. For starters the complete lack of regulation and appallingly dated education that PTs receive. Other things we discuss are, getting 'photoshoot ready', 'detailed meal plans', 'social media pressure' and many more. We give our constructive thoughts on them all and wow...The more we go on the worse we realise things are! Thanks for tuning in for this series. As always though, if you have any more ideas for this series no reason we can't revisit it if the idea is good enough! So send them in! More From Us Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we explore doing high amounts of volume in individual gym sessions AND overall training volume. More = better right? Well, we explore the latest and greatest scientific evidence and our own thoughts to see if that really is the case. We also take a closer look at German Volume Training - a popular advanced training system involving 10 sets of 10 of an exercise (normally @60%) with a 60 second rest between sets. So quite a punchy session. We talk about our own experiences with this training system (lots of pain lol) and see what the current data says. A lot of the conversation today revolves around recovery and your ability to recover from volume in general. Volume should be personalised and while we do explore what the data says - sometimes it's best to use the data as just a guideline and optimise from there. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs. This week we are joined by Ginger Fitness Couple (Ginge & Amber). They are both currently serving in the British Army with a current combined service of 35 years! Because of this we naturally discuss where the army has been and is going in terms of physical development. Is it going in the right direction? Are soldiers getting soft? It's certainly an interesting conversation. 'Back in my day' We also go a bit more sport specific in our discussion of British Army Warrior Fitness & Sapper Warrior Fitness. This is a sport that essentially makes the British Armies current training system competitive. Think CrossFit but less technical and more 'army'. We also get a recap from Ginge, on this years Sapper Games. An annual sports competition for the Corps of Royal Engineers. We naturally focus on the Sapper Warrior Fitness portion of the Sapper Games. A 2 day event (the biggest yet!) and Ginge was the head judge! We also knock on romances door as we discuss how these 2 met. One came out on top here. Spoiler alert: One was described having an 'aura' the other a 'pest' lol. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit. This week we explore the sometimes stigmatised world of mindset & mindset training/coaching. We are not alone however! We are joined by Nicky Roger (The Mind Coach) She is a qualified Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and a qualified NLP Sports Practitioner. She is also s seasoned triathlete and runner. & has taken part in numerous races over the past 10+ years and has secured several age group wins, regional prizes and podium positions. In triathlon she qualified for Team GB at sprint distance and also secured a spot at the World Championships for the half ironman distance. In 2016 she completed UK Ironman, finishing fourth in her age group. Fast forward and she is currently hitting the trails and nurturing a dream of becoming an ultra runner! We discuss a plethora of mind related 'stuff' and we're sure some it will sound familiar and perhaps afterwards the awareness will lead to change. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we explore a controversial topic in something we are sure most will have consumed at some stage. Alcohol. We just want to stress that this episode is not a 'social commentary' in that we are not saying do or don't but more we explore the current data and see what the actual impacts are on your health, fitness and sports performance. You can take from it what you will and make the choices you make based on this information. Some of the questions we answer include, how much does alcohol effect recovery, can I have a few beers the night before a gym session and how good are the current intake guidelines? We also discuss some sporting controversy in should professionals athletes (mainly footballers in this discussion) be banned from alcohol given what we know about it? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we explore combining cardio/endurance training with lifting weights and wether or not the interference effect is as scary as some may have you believe 'Is Cardio Killing Your Gains?' We take you on a data driven journey from 1980-2022 unpacking all science giving you an insight to where this fear of combing weights and cardio came from and if by 2022 the pendulum has shifted at all. Some would say it has swung too far. By the end we come to a pretty solid conclusion and offer some key takeaways (context dependent) that you can use going forward to ensure you get the most out of your training. This involves taking a closer look at CrossFit - a modality that you could argue is inherently concurrent training. Is this a bad thing though? Well, it can be but we provide crucial information to aid in the navigation of the interference effect. More From Us Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting With PTs. This week we are joined by Rory Brown 'a man on a mission' to help people break free from binge eating and heal their relationship with mind, body and food. He's been on quite a journey and we leave no stone unturned. We explore his early aspirations of wanting to become an actor to then it all coming crumbling down leading to Rory having to navigate the challenges of an eating disorder. His experiences have made him the man and practitioner he is today and this is why he believes he's so good at what he does. He's been there too. Before his journey we naturally dive into his top 3 gym peeves. This leads us into an interesting conversation about behaviour change. Do you think this should be a part for he PT Level 3 curriculum? We certainly think so. Rory also gives us an insight into the world of breath work and mediation. Many may be dismissive at first but in this day and age where stress is a big problem these tools make sense. 'Allow yourself to feel' 'A time for self enquiry' We of course finish with our secret bonus questions and this episode we talk about 'DJ Rory Brown' So, while there are plenty of laughs in this one there are some really powerful conversations that we are sure will make you sit back and THINK, FEEL and then hopefully take action. NOTE: A statement was made reference '95% of gp cases are related to stress' do not take this as statistical fact - it was a quote from someone being used to highlight the potential impact stress is having. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we explore the rather complex world of stretching. Is stretching before a workout going to help you "limber up" or is it actually detrimental to performance? Does stretching after a workout actually do anything meaningful for recovery or is it a waste of time? These are a couple of questions we will answer this week! We also dive into (much to Tom's annoyance) the apps ROMWOD & GOWOD and why they may be more harmful than you think. We cover a lot of different contexts in this one, static before and after and separately, dynamic stretching, intensities, durations, basically any situation for stretching is analysed and we give you the information you need to make an informed decision whether or not to use them in your training. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit and another one-off special! This week we are joined by leading sports dietitian, Renee McGregor. She has just released a brand new book 'More Fuel You' this book is a clear and authoritative guide to making the most of your nutrition. She looks at fuelling needs for sporting participation, training and competition, and analyses some popular diet options, including low-carbohydrate, vegan and intermittent fasting. We don't just talk about the book, however! This is Chat Sh*t Get Fit after all! We establish her top nutrition-based pet peeve, explore her rise in this industry and why she has become so successful (a term she doesn't like using!) and also take a closer look at one of her specialities, eating disorders. This leads us to discuss the controversial implementation of legislation involving calories on menus. We finish by diving into listener-submitted bonus questions/discussion points! This involves Bill informing Renee of "The Liver King" a controversial figure in the world of carnivores. Renee tackles it like a politician! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This we explore the topic of people who don't do much physical activity - so inactive/sedentary. There are numerous reasons (as we go into) why this might be the case and some of the stats are staggering - For example Piercy 2018 - Only 26% of men, 19% of women, and 20% of adolescents in the U.S. meet current Physical Activity Guidelines We also dive into some research on the benefits of meeting the guidelines and also what these guidelines are. Now, it's all good and well us stating the obvious "move more" but what can we do to make this easier? In the second part of the podcast, we dive into action points on how to make your health and fitness journey easier, more enjoyable and most importantly consistent. By the end, you should be equipped with the knowledge and the confidence to tackle these really achievable guidelines. More From Us Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting With PTs. This week we are joined by Rebecca Jorgensen a health and fitness professional with over 15 years of experience. Rebecca has her Master of Science in Exercise Science and Sports Studies with a Concentration in Exercise Science as well as ACSM Certified Exercise Physiology License. Rebecca is also an Exercise is Medicine Certified Practitioner and a certified USAW Olympic Lifting coach. As the title alludes to, however, the episode is a bit chaotic! Chaotically fun though! We of course explore her top 3 gym pet peeves and Tom pulls out a brand new ranking system. We then explore a side of her that was somewhat unexpected in that by day she's a personal trainer extraordinaire but by night she is Bartender Becca drink mixing maestro! We finish by exploring her love of food and discussing Tom's "sh*t housery" when it comes to ordering drinks! Get in touch or follow along with Becca's journey! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we explore the world of cooking oils. We answer the big questions such as "is coconut oil even good for you?", "Is canola as bad as the media sometimes portrays?" and basically come to a conclusion about the various types of cooking oils and their respective levels of fat types - so saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. We are not alone this week, however! We are joined by a familiar voice in Jaebien Rosario or as he's known on Instagram "sciencebyjae" previously MrCogfit. He is literally walking data and he has come equipped with a mammoth load of scientific literature to help us come to a conclusion as to if cooking oils are bad for you (especially PUFAs, omega 6 and canola oil!) Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - This week is a one-off special where we are joined by the inspirational Rebecca Slater. Just over 5 years ago she was involved in a serious car accident that led to her having her right arm amputated. She was given two choices. Accept what's happened, move on with her life and try to make the best of it or let it consume her and spend the rest of her life thinking what if. She decided the former as you'll soon find out. As well as being the current World Strongest Disabled Woman she is also Britains Disabled Strongwoman 2021 Arnold's Sports Festival UK 2021 WR Holder x 3 GB Women's Sitting Volleyball squad So yeah an outrageous set of titles there. To follow her on this journey check out her Instagram! It's not all be plain sailing though. She has had to battle hard to get where she is not only physically but mentally. Becca is super passionate about mental health and this led us to discuss how her mental health struggles have been far greater than her physical ones. She also offers some much-accepted advice for anyone out there going through a trauma. Key point: Trauma is subjective. Never think yours isn't worth mentioning. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we unpack some scientific research regarding a few different exercises that often get "stick" online. Normally you'll see them in videos with titles such as "5 Exercises You Must NEVER Do" or "10 dangerous exercises to avoid" as we'll go on this is a rather nocebic narrative but is it justified? We focus on the shoulders and back with exercises such as Upright Row Behind The Neck Shoulder Press Good Mornings Sit-Ups Jefferson Curls Kipping Pull-Ups There could be more but as we'll go into they all have things in common making them targets for attack. So join us as we discuss some listener polls, the current evidence and even touch on a recent hot topic in Mike Boyle and his comments about "orthopaedic cost" Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You. This week we tackle the sometimes hostile world of organic vs non-organic. There is no question that organic is more expensive than non-organic but the question on everyone's lips is why is it so and should be "biting the bullet" and going organic for our health? Well we dive into it all We go into the fundamental reasons why organic is more expensive What some of our listeners choose and why We explore the "nasty chemical" that is glyphosate (spoiler alert it's not as nasty as you think) and give you the information you need including the acceptable daily intake We look at pesticides, in general, seeing what the current evidence says which also leads us to look at claims such as "pesticides cause autism" We discuss the media and its apparent biased in this conversation - essentially spreading fear and according to one meta-analysis could be causing certain low-income households to not buy certain foods as unable to afford the organic variety We also briefly touch on if organic is better for the environment - the conclusion may surprise you! So yeah a jam-packed episode for sure but one that is super important. If you find it useful and or entertaining make sure to share it with someone who may need to hear it....Maybe you know an organic zealot? Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You. This week we go "full send" into the world of CrossFit. A training system that is still fairly new especially when compared to things like weightlifting, powerlifting and bodybuilding. The question is is it bad for you? Is it worse for you than those other training modalities mentioned? Well, we've spoken about this before but it's 2022 now and we have some much larger and much newer scientific papers (listed at the bottom!) which will hopefully allow us to come to a more solid conclusion - Is CrossFit safe? We also give our own thoughts on the world of CrossFit - Bill being a CrossFitter himself & Tom not - so we like to think we've tackled this in a non-biased way. We look at the variety of movements in CrossFit, we talk about the difference between the sport and training modality, and we look at "self-harm" in doing too much too soon. We finish by looking at the brand "CrossFit Inc" as Tom says numerous times "I love the training hate the brand" We also dive into those polls that you guys responded to on our Instagram and much to our pleasure the results were mixed which is perfect for starting a real conversation - so thank you! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You? This week we go full carbohydrate and explore the world of white bread, rice and pasta commonly associated with being bad, especially in comparison to their brown/wholewheat/wholegrain varieties. The question is - is there any validity to this? Well, it's not as simple as yes and no BUT there is one key difference that when looking at the research could make a big difference to your overall health going forward. We also dive into your responses to our Instagram polls and wow, you lot really are passionate about bread, rice and pasta...We then explore the key macro/ingredient differences between the white and brown varieties to see if there's any real difference. We finish by taking a closer look at rice and the fact it contains inorganic arsenic a toxic compound. As with most things, "the poison is in the dosage" and it's not as scary as it sounds but it's worth knowing about. If you have any concerns please consult your doctor/ a dietician as we are neither! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs. This week we talk with former pro cyclist Anthony Walsh. Owner of successful coaching business and podcast of the same name, Roadman Cycling. For long term listeners, you'll know we naturally start with his top 3 gym peeves and Tom pulls out the RPC scale - yeah it's been a while! We then explore Anthony's journey from a profession in law to pro cyclist to then "hanging up the bike" pro wise and focusing on growing his coaching business and podcast Roadman Cycling. What's really interesting is how cycling is seen as just a tool to health, happiness and longevity and that everything is looked at when it comes to Roadman Cycling coaching including something they love "biohacking" We also explore how technology has impacted coaching in the cycling space (spoiler alert it's a lot!) which naturally brings the discussion onto things like "Peloton" We finish by attacking Anthony with some "secret questions" which involve looking at some listener submitted responses to our questions "What do you think of cyclists" & "the hardest thing about riding a bike" Check out the Roadman Cycling Podcast Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You?!. This week we tackle a couple of flavour enhancers (so make your food taste less crap) in salt and MSG. The issue is that MSG gets a bad wrap normally associated with terms such as "chemical", "manufactured" "not natural" etc and is even part of the "Chinese restaurant syndrome" thing that we do explore in this episode. We look at what MSG actually is, how it is made and look at the latest science to see if the backlash it gets is warranted. We then look at salt something you're probably more familiar with. More than just a flavour enhancer as we do go into - the question is though how much salt is too bad for you? We know we need it but the World Health Organisation says we have too much. While we do give some tips on how to reduce salt intake and ways of telling that are having too much, Tom pulls out a whopping research paper that indicated we may need to update the guidelines?! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit and welcome to our brand new series "Is It Bad For You?" A series where we are going to explore numerous things in the industry exploring the science and our own thoughts to come to a conclusion if something is indeed bad for you! We start with a big one! Artificial sweeteners and energy drinks get a lot of stick as being "full of chemicals" that "rot the body" "give you cancer" basically a magnitude of undesirable health effects...The question is...are these claims backed the evidence or is it simply a case of a fear of chemicals and misinformation spreading like wildfire. Are 4-5 cans of diet coke going to mess you up? Is a can of Monster Energy going to rot your insides? Is caffeine in energy drinks more dangerous than that of coffee? We look at recommendations from various health organisations as well as the current scientific literature and by the end, you'll be equipped with the knowledge to tackle any "Facebook Warriors" in the future in reference to this topic. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - This week we tackle a listener request and one that has been highly anticipated! Turns out you guys really want to know what we think of these things. All will be revealed and by the end, you should be able to make a more informed decision on whether they are a good fit for you. That's if you can get through all the chaos of course. We take a closer look at the scientific evidence when it comes to these products, we dive into some listener comments regarding experiences with these products and we also explore a lawsuit involving Vibram and 3.75 million dollars! We also did our first Twitch live stream and for those that joined us it was a lot of fun - unfortunately, everything on the stream does not make it into this episode (Some stuff live just does not work as something to be kept on the internet for all eternity!) Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. We are at seasons end and it's more chaotic than ever. We start by looking at a "functional creamer" that Tom thinks will be the next big thing in CrossFit...We then get into the bulk of the show where we explore some "odds & sods" of the supplement world. Including Tart Cherry Juice HMB Caffeine Gum + Caffeine Rinse Crocodile Blood...No seriously... Apparently, it helps with DOMS? We'll decide... So a mental episode that's for sure but even with its jovial facade, we did go into the papers and all the studies mentioned today or ones we've looked at will be linked down below. She gives us an insight into "Munchies & Macros", and why her approach when working with masters athletes is so effective. We ask her what is the biggest mistake people make when it comes to nutrition and her solution! She gives us her top nutrition tip And we finish by answering some listener questions - including "Do "superfoods" really exist or is it just excellent marketing?" and "How does food affect mood?" As you can see this is a jam-packed episode with an abundance of takeaways regarding nutrition. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - This week is a British Army Fitness special - mainly because on the day of recording it was Bill's final day in the army. According to our polls, many assume the army is full of physically fit individuals and that soldiers should look and perform above average...Is this really the case though? This episode is stacked with conversation including Discussing the results of some Instagram polls including messages received (there were a lot!) Our thoughts on the new British Army fitness tests & how PT is now conducted Our advice for those interested in joining the forces What we think the future holds for fitness in the British Army We really appreciated all the conversation this topic has gained and it was really interesting to explore some of these deeper on the podcast. If you've got any points you'd like to add or any comebacks to anything we've said please get in touch with the methods below and we'll be happy to explore further. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we "focus" on the world of Nootropics or "Smart Drugs" as they are sometimes called. These products aim to improve mental capacity so improved memory, focus and alertness etc. We focus on the supplement side as opposed to the pharmaceutical side that looks to aid things like ADHD, Alzheimers etc. We explore one product in particular. Joe Rogan's favourite "ONNIT Alpha Brain". This is not a cheap supplement but it promises/advertises some pretty awesome stuff so we think it's important to establish whether it's all "placebo" or the science stacks up. We break down the ingredients in this supplement and see what the latest research says - this involves a couple of research papers directly on the Alpha Brain supplement one even being conducted on US Army soldiers. We then look at a couple of other hot ingredients that you may find in nootropic supplements including, creatine, caffeine, Lion's mane and basically any mega sounding root. We finish by giving you some actionable steps to improve your brain game and it's certainly worth sticking around for. Online Personal Training - Train Primal Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit. This week we explore the world of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) & essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation. You'll often see language such as "waste of money" or "pi*sing away your money" etc. While there is some substance behind those comments it really does come down to context. We have found some potential benefits to taking these things and also have a brand new research paper that bolsters these claims! All research papers stated in the episode can be found at the bottom! We also take another look at NOCCO. This is a beverage made popular by CrossFit - it contains BCAAs and caffeine and you'll often see CrossFitters sipping away at gyms/events. Will we get that mega sponsorship? Probably not...Tom is magic with words "tastes like piss" Online Personal Training - Train Primal Want more great content from us? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs! This week we chat to industry veteran, Luke Katt of Club K Fitness based out of Hextable, Kent. We know Luke through Bill as when Bill was based down south with the army he would often visit Luke for a sports massage! His passion for dance has led him on a rather interesting/exciting career involving stints in Ibiza, a Les Mills Instructor/assessor and even appearing in a drag/trans dancing & singing act on Britain's Got Talent. It all got a bit scandalous though and you'll have to listen to find out what happened there! In a more serious vein, It was great to hear Luke's thoughts on things like experience in the industry (he has bundles) in yes it can be really useful but are many out there falling foul of "this is how I've always done it". As Tom always says "science is an ever-changing sea" and it was clear Luke understood this and his thoughts were rather refreshing. We also explore his journey into opening Club K back in 2014 and hear of the struggles along the way but also hear some really great stories that have made it all worthwhile. Join Us On Patreon?! Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we explore something that's been around for some time and is often referred to as "magic gold" especially in regards to inflammation. Question is - is this all marketing or does the latest science back up its many claims? We focus on two "designer products" in Zooki - a turmeric sachet and The Turmeric Co - a turmeric shot. They both boast big claims with the latter even having a page dedicated to science. We naturally dive in and dissect the page. The things we focus on in particular are Inflammation DOMs Gut Inflammation Cholesterol Levels - Blood Lipids Skin Health Sports Performance & Physical Exercise We then finish by taking a quick look at probiotics and gut health (a fairly new field if we're being honest) and see if those magic yoghurts you see in the supermarket (looking at you Activia) are worth the price tag! Of course, as with all in this series, it's important you consult your doctor first before supplementing anything into your diet. Fancy joining us on Patreon? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs. This week we sit down with someone who is very much new to the health and fitness industry in Will Turville. He's had quite a journey starting by completing a degree in golf coaching and performance to then moving onto retail and working his way up to general manager at Hollister - he was then fired from this role resulting in him getting a job in events management. This job required a lot of hours (Up to 100 a week!) and this paired with his desire to start PTing led to numerous issues mentally. Covid comes around and the time came for him to start his journey as a Personal Trainer. In a short space of time, he's been involved with two fitness businesses - FunkHub & BUILD. With FunkHub he learned that starting a business with a friend especially in tough times has its own unique challenges. He's now on the up and loving his new situation. If you want to follow Will on his journey or perhaps work with him? Check out his Instagram here. We also pounce at the end with "secret questions" where Bill reveals he knows a close friend of Wills (He nearly ousted Bill early on) It could have ended horribly for Will but instead it just revealed a very powerful bromance. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we explore the world of "voodoo" (as Tom calls it) and take a closer look at Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and Ashwagandha. Both come with a plethora of health benefits and due to the risk of their gummy form and promotion from athletes you seem to see them all over the place physically and virtually. The question is do the claims stand up to the latest scientific evidence or is it all placebo? The claims we focus on in today's episode are Weight loss/management Gut Health Heart Health Immunity/Immune Health Skin Health Physical Performance Sleep Memory We use the commonly reported benefits as a guide + Goli a well-known player for these supplements has a citation page offering scientific evidence to back the numerous health-boosting claims. Spoiler alert: Bill & Tom are not impressed. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to make a more informed decision whether to buy these (sometimes expensive) supplements. In this episode, we also launch our brand new Patreon! We are super excited about this as it allows you to get more great content from us but at the same time support the running of the podcast. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we get our pump on and talk all things pre-workout. We discuss our own usage as well as some of the listeners and then follow it up by taking a closer look at some common ingredients found in some well-known pre-workouts. We focus on Beta-alanine (Tingle city) Caffeine L-Citrulline/Citrulline malate Taurine Creatine B-Vits Bonus ingredients such as ElevATP In regards to pre-workout inclusion, it's a bit of a mixed bag on this one. An example is a creatine. It's great if taken daily with the correct dosage but if you only consume creatine in your pre-workout and only use it on heavy sessions it's actually doing nothing at all due to it needing to be taken chronically for effect. By the end, though you should be able to make a more informed decision which one will be best for you or if you need one at all! Want to support the Podcast? Hi everyone, welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting W/ PTs. This week we sit down with Adam Pitchford - gym owner and head coach of FolkFit Functional Fitness. A fairly new CrossFit gym in the Kings Lynn, West Norfolk area. (This is Bills local gym!) It's a great chat that naturally starts with the top 3 gym pet peeves! Buckle up - these are our strongest pet peeves to date! We then transition onto a more personal level exploring Adams past and what made him eventually take the plunge and open his very own functional fitness space. We hear the challenges he's faced along the way and the things that make it all worth it. "The light at the end of the tunnel". We are also teased about the brand new much larger space opening in November! Exciting times are ahead for Adam and the team. We finish with some secret questions but this time with a twist. Bill hosts the Chat Sh*t Get Fit - "Which CrossFit athlete/coach said this" pop quiz that comes with its own unique twists. Anymore twists and you'd think M Night Shyamalan made the podcast! If you are in the West Norfolk area or visiting be sure to check out the gym. Who knows - you may see Bill dropping empty barbells in his knee sleeves! Check out the links below to see more. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we unpack the controversial part of the supplement industry in fat burners. Normally they aren't labelled simply as "fat burners" but with names normally related to heat "Thermopure", "Complete Thermogenic" and even Bill with his latest announcement of "Primal Ash From Pompeii" (Patent pending) They'll also avoid using fat burner language and instead opt for "weight management" and "help in weight loss goals". They know there's a stigma so try to avoid using the word fat burner specifically yet when you google it these products are what come up. In this episode, we focus on directing some key ingredients that crop up in a lot of different "fat-burning" products. Caffeine Green Tea Extract L-Carnitine Cayenne Pepper Extract Black Pepper Other Buzzwords We look at the current scientific evidence on each of these ingredients to see if they have a significant impact on fat loss and if it's worth the £25+ for a months supply. Before all that, though we break down the conventional way of losing fat which involves that commonly used buzz phrase "calorie deficit". As with all episodes in this series, before taking a health supplement it's important you consult your doctor first in case of any underlying health issues. Want to support the Podcast? Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Chatting Supplements. This week we explore omega 3 & 6 supplementation. Both come with a wide range of benefits that we explore fully giving our thoughts and summarising the latest evidence as well. Do they help with cardiovascular health, brain health, exercise recovery? These are some of the things we dive into. The big question is though...Do you need to supplement extra into your diet? We also look at the different types of omega 3 - ALA, EPA, DHA and go into why these types make all the difference when it comes to food containing "omega 3". Honestly it's all a bit crazy this week and this episode was certainly a headache to research so we hope you find some value in what we say. Before taking a health supplement it's important you consult your doctor first in case of any underlying health issues. Want to join our fitness community Train Primal?
