After years featuring the Hemi V8, the 2025 Ram 1500 now offers the new turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane straight-six engines, and Co-Host Chris Teague gives the heavily massaged full-sized pickup a thorough test. At the wheel of the off-road-oriented Rebel trim, Teague found rural Maine an exciting venue to check out power delivery, handling and creature comforts. Inside, the Ram 1500 offers a cutting-edge experience with its advanced Uconnect 5 infotainment system. It features a 14.5-inch touchscreen, passenger screen, digital instrument cluster, and available head-up display, alongside conveniences like dual wireless device charging. How did his family like it? We'll have a full report in this episode. Across the country on the nation's Left Coast, Host Jack Nerad tested a vehicle whose profile is a litmus test. Either you like the looks of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 battery-electric sedan or you don't. Nerad comes down on the side of those who like what is definitely standout styling. The rear-drive Ioniq 6 Long Range model he testeds delivers up to an EPA-estimated 361 miles of range, equalling or outperforming key competitors like the Tesla Model 3. Beyond that, the minimalist, tech-forward cabin includes dual 12.3-inch displays, fast-charging capabilities, and advanced driver-assistance features. But what's it like to live with day to day? Nerad will have the answer. This week AOTR welcomes two special guests. Danny Shapiro is VP of Automotive at NVIDIA, and Nerad's recent interview with him was so filled with information that it was impossible to fit it all in one segment so we're bringing you the balance of his comments in this show. As a bonus, Nerad also spoke with Adrian Aguirre, chief engineer of the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition, and we'll bring you that as well. Topping the news this week, Tesla has just pulled the wraps off two new vehicles and to say they are groundbreaking is under-stating the case. We'll have all the details. Electric vehicle sales in the United States hit a new record despite many challenges, and we'll tell you how the carmakers pulled off that magic trick coming up. Hint: your taxpayer dollars had a lot to do with it. The current Paris Auto Show previews what could become an epic battle in the United States as European automakers square off against the Chinese, who are flooding European countries with low-priced electric cars. We'll report on that battle soon. In a related development, one major global vehicle manufacturer's admitted troubles have prompted merger rumors. In this episode, we'll tell you which companies are involved and how this could affect the vehicles you can buy here in the United States. So we have a lot of show for you this week. While the other domestic manufacturers are dropping their sporty cars as if they were redhot hunks of iron just pulled from a fireplace, Ford is doubling down on its iconic Mustang, and we're happy about that. This past week, Co-Host Chris Teague got the chance to put the Mustang EcoBoost convertible through its paces as summer turned to fall in New England. Tough duty, right? He wanted to learn if the turbo four-cylinder in the Mustang was strong enough to propel the Mustang at speeds to which he had become accustomed. He also wanted to see firsthand how practical the two-door door bodystyle is for his family, which includes two school-age kids. Teague will have a full report in this episode. Halfway across the country, Host Jack Nerad had similarly unhazardous duty as he piloted the 2025 Genesis GV80 SUV during a long family weekend in Dallas. The road trip included a college rivalry football game, heaping servings of slow-smoked brisket, and, most importantly, his middle daughter's engagement to a great Texas guy. It turned out that the opulent GV80 was the perfect horse for this course. With 375 horsepower on tap, the gorgeous SUV had more than enough potency to fend off Lone Star state drivers who don't seem to have mastered the art of the freeway merge. The thronelike interior seats took comfort to a new level, and the automatic climate control overcame the 95-degree temperatures that vexed those who set foot outside the vehicle. Our guest this week has a fascinating story to tell. Danny Shapiro is the Vice President of Automotive for NVIDIA, the company making the AI dreams of carmakers like Volvo come true. From infotainment to safety to self-driving, Shapiro knows it all from the inside of vehicles like the 2025 Volvo EX90 electric SUV, and he'll share it with us in this exclusive interview. In the news this week, if you are about to go car shopping, you might be in for a giant shock. While there's a great deal of talk about inflation this time of year, a new report on the auto industry makes it all come to life. We'll give you the grim news coming up. Are you worried that your car is spying on you? We asked this question about a month ago, but now a new proposed federal regulation suggests the problem is more immediate—and more scary—than you might think. We'll discuss that and get behind the story to reveal what another motive behind the new rule might be. We'll also discuss which vehicle brands get the most loyalty from their owners, according to a new J.D. Power study that clearly shows how car owners feel about the brands they have purchased. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. #282, 2024 Nvidia Conference With Danny Shapiro

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

The autonomous vehicle industry has reduced its speed. Its future is here, but it's not quite as in focus as the next signpost. Even the most fervent believers have re-evaluated their enthusiasm for the human-free driving mode. What's ahead for autonomous driving and an array of other pending driving technology is among the many topics in many industries set for explanation, examination and speculation beginning March 18 during the four-day Nvidia GPU Technology Conference (GTC). Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's vice president of automotive, is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. With Co-host Bruce Aldrich on vacation, James Raia interviews Shapiro about the pending conference. "The autonomous space is progressing very nicely," says Shapiro. "It's taken longer than we initially thought. "In fact, the entire industry underestimated the complexity of being able to safely navigate." Shapiro was also a guest on The Weekly Driver Podcast (Episode #123) in February 2020. The conference involves the advancing usages of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for accelerated computing and AI. The naming sponsor, Nvidia, is the Santa Clara-based multinational corporation that designs and supplies graphics for data science and high-performance computing. It's also the dominant global supplier of AI hardware and software. Founded in 1993, Nvidia took its name from invidia. It's the Latin word for envy, the ancient Greek Titan deity of hatred and jealousy. The company chose its name to symbolize its vision and innovation in the fields of graphics and computing. The quickly evolving automotive industry and its AI future will share the conference with similar advancing innovations in healthcare, accelerated computing and data science. Organizers note more than 900 talks, training sessions, workshops and panels and more than 300 exhibitors and demonstrations are scheduled.
" Any companies that are doing work in AI will have NVIDIA in their data center, in their workstations or their vehicles," Shapiro says. "We have hundreds of car companies and truck companies; robot taxi companies have our have our data platform in their vehicles." According to Shapiro, organizers anticipate 20,000 in-person attendees and several hundred thousand virtual attendees. In the automotive portion of the conference, Shapiro details AI's part in improved safety. Humans still have erratic behavior whether they are driving or pedestrians. Many companies, Shapiro notes, are integrating driver assistance platforms. "The owner of the vehicle, the person behind the wheel is the driver still responsible but artificial intelligence is making the road a lot safer,” Shapiro says. "It can alert them (the driver) and it can take over certain functions on the highway, lane-keeping, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control. "These are all very complicated software systems that are getting better and better. Now, there's the notion of a software-defined car or a vehicle that can get updates just like your phone. Vehicles are just getting smarter and smarter."

Danny Shapiro, Vice President, Automotive, NVIDIA joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss why NVIDIA is the platform for enabling autonomy. The conversation begins with Grayson and Danny discussing how NVIDIA developed the platform for autonomous vehicles and why NVIDIA first entered the automotive market. We've created an open platform. It's an accelerated computing platform for autonomous vehicles. – Danny ShapiroIn 1999, NVIDIA invented the GPU to overcome performance bottlenecks of the CPU.Think of it as lanes on a highway, where a CPU maybe would be a dual-core or quad-core. It would have two lanes or four lanes for data to travel. The GPU has thousands of lanes. A highway with a thousand lanes is going to accommodate a lot more traffic. – Danny ShapiroWith over 370 automakers, tier 1 suppliers, developers, and researchers as partners, NVIDIA is playing a crucial role in ushering in the future of autonomy. A lot more goes into an autonomous vehicle than just the autonomous driving stack. The user experience will be an important element to success and NVIDIA's GPUs are being used to improve speech recognition in-vehicle.Speech is very complex. You have many different languages. You have different accents. You have the same word that can mean different things, so the context matters. – Danny ShapiroNVIDIA is working on bringing natural language processing to the edge with the goal of reducing latency and improving the user experience inside of the vehicle. As an example, Danny shared the following scenario:You could say it's warm and the car would respond, do you want me to turn on the AC or roll down your window? You can say, I will roll down the window. The car will also be able to recognize was it the driver or the passenger speaking. That's a multi-modal approach where we are using AI on the voice and also with a camera inside that can monitor the occupants, read lips and determine who was talking. It would roll down the appropriate window based on who was speaking. – Danny ShapiroThis is the future of in-vehicle experiences and Mercedes, through a partnership with NVIDIA, is beginning to deploy the early stages of this technology in their new flagship 2022 EQS sedan. In the future when SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicles become available, the inside of the vehicle could become an interactive gaming experience.Integrating the motion of the vehicle with what is happening in virtual reality can be a really amazing experience. – Danny ShapiroIn the interior of SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicles, window glass will become augmented and screens will be ubiquitous, suggests Grayson. This new digital real estate will allow brands to create bespoke experiences for paying passengers, creating new potential revenue streams.Disney is an example of a brand that stands to benefit as it can extend the “Disney Experience” into the vehicle. Grayson shares an example of how Disney can potentially create Star Wars autonomous vehicles to further enhance the new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser two-night immersive experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The same technology that is used to develop immersive experiences is used to develop autonomous vehicles — simulation. With DeepMap joining NVIDIA, DeepMap's maps will be used to enhance NVIDIA's simulation technology.Through simulation, we can train the vehicle to be smarter. – Danny ShapiroInside of NVIDIA, there is one centralized engineering organization, which has many benefits as engineers are able to learn from each other and apply processing techniques to different industries from autonomous driving to health care.If you look at something like autonomous driving where we are taking images from front-facing cameras and trying to detect pedestrians, our health care group and the work they are doing in medical imaging and cancer research leverages a lot of that same technology. Because if you do a scan, an MRI, an X-Ray, you are looking for cancer cells. It's not that different to process from what we are doing with pedestrian detection. – Danny ShapiroWith NVIDIA's core approach towards engineering and solving the world's biggest challenges through compute, the company was busy simultaneously building an autonomous trucking business at the same time they were building their automotive business. Today, NVIDIA has 15 truck partners to complement its 370+ automotive industry partners. We are not building the trucks, we are not building the cars, but we are helping our customers do their life's work and create amazing products. – Danny ShapiroWrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Danny discuss NVIDIA's data center strategy and the advantage for autonomous vehicle and trucking companies to build autonomy solutions on the NVIDIA platform.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A wide range of interactive sessions, recorded presentations, demos, podcasts and training covering transformative technologies are included. "The autonomous automotive world is going through a tremendous transformation," said Shapiro on the eve of the conference. "It's in the form of AI. It's a function of the software. It's a function of bringing supercomputing into the vehicle. Shapiro explained that until recently Nvidia was not well-known. "We started out developing a lot of computers the were used by other computing companies," Shapiro said. "We started out making 3D graphics and graphic cards so people could play video games." "Our products now span everything from consumer electronic devices live tablets to PCs to work stations to supercomputers and data centers. But also now we have a group that's been around that's developing technology that goes into cars." The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners.
