This flagship electric SUV from the Swedish automaker promises to revolutionise how they go about making vehicles in the future, but its launch has raised some eyebrows in the industry. In this episode, I explore the EX90's impressive features, from its powerful electric powertrain to its cutting-edge safety systems. I also discuss how Volvo's legacy of innovation in automotive safety has shaped this new offering. But we'll also tackle the elephant in the room: the missing features at launch. - Is Volvo risking its hard-earned reputation for safety and reliability by launching a vehicle with key features missing? - How does the EX90 stack up against competitors like the Kia EV9, Rivian R1S, and Tesla Model Y? - What are the promises and perils of software-defined vehicles? - Do startup EV makers get more leeway when launching unfinished products, and promising future updates to fix any issues?

In this week's show Cormac tells us about one of the best classic car events you've never heard of, which just happens to be in France. While the other domestic manufacturers are dropping their sporty cars as if they were redhot hunks of iron just pulled from a fireplace, Ford is doubling down on its iconic Mustang, and we're happy about that. This past week, Co-Host Chris Teague got the chance to put the Mustang EcoBoost convertible through its paces as summer turned to fall in New England. Tough duty, right? He wanted to learn if the turbo four-cylinder in the Mustang was strong enough to propel the Mustang at speeds to which he had become accustomed. He also wanted to see firsthand how practical the two-door door bodystyle is for his family, which includes two school-age kids. Teague will have a full report in this episode. Halfway across the country, Host Jack Nerad had similarly unhazardous duty as he piloted the 2025 Genesis GV80 SUV during a long family weekend in Dallas. The road trip included a college rivalry football game, heaping servings of slow-smoked brisket, and, most importantly, his middle daughter's engagement to a great Texas guy. It turned out that the opulent GV80 was the perfect horse for this course. With 375 horsepower on tap, the gorgeous SUV had more than enough potency to fend off Lone Star state drivers who don't seem to have mastered the art of the freeway merge. The thronelike interior seats took comfort to a new level, and the automatic climate control overcame the 95-degree temperatures that vexed those who set foot outside the vehicle. Our guest this week has a fascinating story to tell. Danny Shapiro is the Vice President of Automotive for NVIDIA, the company making the AI dreams of carmakers like Volvo come true. From infotainment to safety to self-driving, Shapiro knows it all from the inside of vehicles like the 2025 Volvo EX90 electric SUV, and he'll share it with us in this exclusive interview. In the news this week, if you are about to go car shopping, you might be in for a giant shock. While there's a great deal of talk about inflation this time of year, a new report on the auto industry makes it all come to life. We'll give you the grim news coming up. Are you worried that your car is spying on you? We asked this question about a month ago, but now a new proposed federal regulation suggests the problem is more immediate—and more scary—than you might think. We'll discuss that and get behind the story to reveal what another motive behind the new rule might be. We'll also discuss which vehicle brands get the most loyalty from their owners, according to a new J.D. Power study that clearly shows how car owners feel about the brands they have purchased. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The list is crowded; listen in for details. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome Jamie Butters, Executive Editor of Automotive News to the show. After sharing his take on the recently announced, but as yet undefined, General Motors and Hyundai cooperative effort, Jamie shared insights from AN's Future Product Pipeline series. We're back! Welcome to Episode 44! This week, Nathan returns from his travels to LA, bringing us up to speed on Volvo's all-new, all-electric 2025 EX90. Plus, he spent a few extra days there behind the wheel of the refreshed 2025 Aston Martin DBX 707, and had his mind positively blown at the Petersen Automotive Museum in downtown LA. While Nathan was out, Nick was off in Ann Arbor checking out the 2025 VW Jetta, which sees a handful of tweaks and updates — some good, others not so much — while remaining a ridiculously great value proposition. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It was just before the opening evening session of the recent 2024 Nvidia GTC conference at the San Jose Convention Center and it got quiet quickly. Alwin Bakkenes, Russell Datz, the carmaker's national media relations manager, Bruce Aldrich, the co-host of The Weekly Driver Podcast, and I all stepped in and closed our respective doors of the 2024 EX90 electric SUV perched in the corner of the expo hall. The 2024 all-electric Volvo EX90 sport utility vehicle was presented at the recent Nvidia GTC conference in San Jose, California. Volvo and Nvidia, the multinational corporation and technology company headquartered in Santa Clara, California, have had a business partnership since 2016. And with the conference an in-person gathering for the conference for the first time in five years, Volvo was among several manufacturers' representatives in attendance. Despite his software engineering expertise and his explanation, Bakkenes didn't need to apologize for his lack of speaking abilities. He's a skilled corporate spokesperson and he was our guest on episode #284 of the podcast Aldrich and I started in August 2017. "This particular car is the start of the new era for Volvo Cars," said Bakkenes. "It's born electric, it's born software-defined and it's very safe. What we have done is build the software architecture based on what we call our core technology which we built with Nvidia." What Bakennes means, and how the soon-to-be-available EX90 is different from the current Volvo lineup, is the subject of our podcast. Please join us as our guest explains how the new vehicle's powertrain, chassis systems, and the driver assistance features all operate on their own computers and what that means to consumers.

Welcome to the best month on the calendar as we give a spirited UAW strike update, peruse the list of new vehicles over the next 18 months, and review the very first show at the site of the NADA Show opening party at the Las Vegas Sphere.Weekend tensions were rising between the UAW and the Detroit 3 as 7000 additional workers went on strike. Ford CEO Jim Farley alleges the union is holding automakers "hostage" with unreasonable demands, stating, "A bad deal would threaten midsize or expensive larger vehicles." and that if the goal was a historic contract, that was already on the table. UAW President Shawn Fain countered by accusing Farley of "lying about the state of negotiations." Fain emphasized, "Bargaining's always a two-way street," and criticized the companies for frequently shifting their stance. The dispute has now engaged approximately 25,000 workers. Nyle Maxwell, owner of four Stellantis stores and chairman of the Stellantis National Dealer Council, voiced concerns about the ongoing strike's impact on inventory and the supply chain. He's been stockpiling fast moving parts and highlighted the potential crunch on Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator inventory. Maxwell emphasized, "any additional strike targets are just going to cripple the entire supply chain." He urges "more strategic thinking and less bluster."Flashback to 2017: Automotive News released its first annual Future Product Pipeline listing all plug-in vehicles headed to market. The Chevrolet Bolt was a fresh face and Elon Musk was touted as a champion of a progressive audience as he announced his ambitious promise of a $35,000 Tesla Model 3 made headlines. Today the Model 3 is the number one selling EV on the market even though it never met that price point, and the Gen 1 Bolt is about to be history. [As hosts Jack Nerad and Chris Teague take Labor Day weekend off, this is the repeat of a popular episode that originally aired in July. Jack and Chris will be back with an all-new episode next week.] While many claim the future is electric, statistics indicate the present day is ICE. Further evidence of that came this week with reports that inventories of newly introduced electric vehicles are piling up on dealer lots and in manufacturer inventories. While this is a cloud for many in the industry, it might represent a silver lining for all those who have been hankering for an electric vehicle, but either couldn't find one at all or were unwilling to pay well beyond the suggested list price to get one. So this could be an excellent time to buy a Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck, a Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover, a Kia EV6 small utility, a Lucid Air luxury sedan, or a Cadillac Lyriq SUV, among many others. While, according to Experian data, EV registrations rose 68 percent in the January-to-May timeframe, some vehicles that were in short supply last year are much more available right now. EVs have risen from four percent market share in 2022 to seven percent share now, but the influx of new electric models could be flooding the marketplace with more choices than carbuyers can process. How do Americans feel about electric cars? A lot of people have opinions, but J.D. Power has data from real consumers. And our special guest this week, Stewart Stropp, executive director of EV intelligence at J.D. Power will tell all about it in his interview with Host Jack Nerad. In the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad will evaluate the pluses and minuses of the Infiniti QX80 full-size luxury SUV. The QX80 isn't the freshest vehicle in the segment, but it checks most of the boxes a luxury SUV needs to check. And compared to others in the class, it could be an excellent buy. Co-Host Chris Teague will test another three-row SUV this week, the 2023 Hyundai Palisade. The likable midsize crossover SUV has been a popular choice since its introduction as a 2021 model, and it's even better for 2023. Self-driving cars have always seemed to be about 10 years away, but we might be getting closer if the National Highway Traffic Administration rules favorably on a request from General Motors. The Detroit-based automaker has asked to be allowed to test its self-driving technology on public roads, and now it is waiting for an answer. NHTSA says that a ruling might be forthcoming soon, and we'll have the details. Fans of big SUVs — and that's most Americans — will be happy to learn that Volvo has just introduced a battery-electric three-row, seven-seat vehicle. We'll give you the details on the 2024 Volvo EX90 later in this segment. All that and much, much more will be there for you in this edition of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Tu and Lei start the podcast out with a discussion on NIO's Q3 earnings and bullish Q4 outlook, specifically what it'll take for NIO to hit 20K units for the month of December. The discussion moves onto Geely's big week that started with the Farizon commercial vehicle launch moving onto the Geely & Renault powertrain tieup, then the Volvo EX90 unveil to finally the Radar RD6 camper launch. Tu pushes into a deeper dive about Renault and their announcements that week including its doubling down on the Google partnership and how they will become digital, connected and electric via their Ampere entity. The podcast closes out with Lei talking about pricing inflection point where NEV sales volume drops off significantly and what it says about the China market.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Certain Volvo models will feature bidirectional charging – meaning they can be used to power a home. The first of these models is the soon to be revealed fully electric EX90. Volvo Car South Africa MD Greg Maruszewski says bidirectional charging is especially significant to South Africans because of loadshedding. “This South African challenge means that our customers will be especially receptive to a feature such as this.” With bidirectional charging, electric cars have the potential to contribute to easing energy demand while plugged in, and, together with many other electric cars, they can even form a virtual powerplant. “Paired with smart-charging capabilities coming to the Volvo Cars smartphone app, the Volvo EX90 will allow motorists to charge their cars when demand from the grid is low and save that stored energy to be used later. ‘Later' could obviously mean the point when loadshedding kicks in,” explains Maruszewski. In practice, during loadshedding, the Volvo EX90 could power a number of appliances in a home – from power tools to a music system, he says. “With the Volvo EX90 you can power your life,” adds Volvo Cars electrification ecosystem head Olivier Loedel. Along with being able to charge appliances and other devices, the car will ultimately also have the capability to lend a helping hand and give some of its charge to other compatible Volvos. On the flip side, if you, as the driver, are about to run out of juice, don't worry. You can accept the same help from other Volvo cars. Where available, the entire charging process will be automatic and managed by the charging functionality in the Volvo Cars app. The underlying algorithm also makes sure that you charge and discharge the battery in a limited way, reducing the risk of battery degradation. Depending on rules specific to each energy market, bidirectional charging could also allow customers to support the grid in different ways. This could include taking in more energy during times when there is a surplus of renewable energy, or selling energy back during peak hours when there is more demand. Maruszewski says Volvo plans to offer the hardware needed to start using bidirectional charging features, including an advanced wall box and home energy management system. “Other accessories such as adapter plugs for appliances and cables for charging other cars will also be available. “The bidirectional charging offer will initially be launched in selected markets. When South Africa [becomes] one of those markets, this will be communicated to local customers.”

Robbie couldn't make it this week so it's just Nicole and Sam. Nicole has been driving the Rivian R1S and the Toyota Rav4, two very different SUVs. Sam had an SUV that sort of fits in the venn diagram of the previous two, with a gas engine and serious off-roadability, the Ford Bronco Heritage edition.Nicole has also recently done a couple of first drive programs with very different outcomes. The new 2023 GMC Canyon was really, really good. When Nicole had her first exposure to the Vinfast VF8 last September, she recommended it could use another 6 months of development. Well, the on-sale date was pushed back almost six months with the first examples going to customers in California recently. Unfortunately, the extra time apparently wasn't put to good use and it's the first vehicle in a long time that can't be recommended to anyone. Meanwhile Volvo and Polestar knew they have software issues to addres and have pushed back the launch of the EX90 and Polestar 3 to the first half of 2024. That new Canyon is going to have a bunch of fresh competition from the new Ford Ranger and the upcoming Toyota Tacoma. Finally, Honda may launch an all-new sports car this year to celebrate its 75th anniversary.Links2023 GMC Canyon2024 Ford Ranger and RaptorVinfast off to a bad start (You Guys IT IS SO BAD -NW)Honda may launch new sports car in 2023Polestar 3//Volvo EX90 delayed to 2024Our Sponsors:* Check out Express VPN: https://expressvpn.com/WHEELBEARINGSAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Robbie has the updated the Ford Mustang Mach-E with a lithium iron phosphate battery, Nicole has the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra N-Line and Sam has the 2024 Ford Ranger XLT.Ford is attacking the Pikes Peak Hillclimb with another EV, this time the Lightning Supertruck. Rivian has done its first major update the R1 series with new motors, battery packs and electronics. Nicole spoke with some Fisker employees about the s**tshow in Manhattan Beach. Two three-row, electric SUVs started production in the US, the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90. IIHS crash tested full-size SUVs and the results were not great. Friend of the show Jonny Lieberman wrote a rant against plug-in hybrids and Robbie made a video about them. Our regular lineup is back together, after a delayed arrival from Robbie. Robbie got to spend some time with the new Toyota Prius Prime while spending a couple of days in Detroit. Sam drove the Hyundai Kona Electric and Nicole has been in the latest Subaru Impreza RS and Mazda CX-90 since she last appeared. This week Sam got to visit the Volvo Cars factory near Charleston, South Carolina where they have just added production of the Polestar 3 in addition to the Volvo EX90. JD Power continues to survey EV drivers about their satisfaction with the public charging experience and while it has ticked upward overall just a but this year, it still has a lot of room for improvement. While traditional auto shows are flagging, Monterey Car Week has become the place to launch premium and expensive machines and wild concepts. We discuss the Cadillac Opulent Velocity and Acura Performance EV concepts and the production 2025 Lincoln Navigator. In China, GM like most other non-Chinese brands is struggling against surging domestic competitors. Robbie is sick this week and his voice is shot, so it's just Sam and Nicole. Nicole has been driving the Subaru Ascent while Sam had the Lexus RX450h+ plug-in hybrid.Hyundai made lots of news this week at its investor day as well as during a drive program in California. Its new 3-row electric crossover, the Ioniq 9 will launch production in 2025 at the new Savannah, GA factory and in 2026, Hyundai will launch an extended range EV (EREV). But before the Ioniq 9 arrives, Hyundai will be producing the Ioniq 5 at the new factory beginning in October. Along with a mild styling refresh and bigger batteries, the Ioniq 5 is getting an SAE J3400/NACS charging port. 3 weeks after the regular Ioniq 5, Hyundai will start production of the Ioniq 5 XRT for those that can't wait for the Rivian R3. Hyundai will also build a limited production version of the N Vision 74 concept.Sam and Nicole both drove the new Volvo EX90 electric 3-row SUV (everyone else is building 3-row EVs, why can't Ford?). Nicole also got to drive the new gas fueled Chevy Equinox. While Robbie is off doing some late winter snow boarding, Nicole and Sam are holding down the fort. Nicole has been driving Buick's new entry level model, the Envista and the Hyundai Palisade. Meanwhile Sam had the new Toyota Prius Limited AWD and the very pricey Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV.Nicole gives a preview of the concepts coming up at this year's Easter Jeep Safari in Moab. We've got a first drive review of the blocky new Hyundai Santa Fe with some more rigorous off-roading than the last Hyundai SUV we tried. We also drive the new Ford Ranger and Ranger Raptor. The New York Auto Show is coming up this week and none of us will be there so of course there are some interesting vehicle launches. Nissan has both ends of its product lineup covered with a second-generation Kicks crossover and an all-new Infiniti QX80 that really steps up its game in the big luxury SUV segment.
