Chuck DeGroat's name has become somewhat synonymous with work on narcissism in the church. But as he and Steve Cuss discuss, DeGroat is devoted to shining a light on wholeheartedness and internal integration. DeGroat and Cuss talk about anxiety—specifically around dying—and the way that age often brings with it a concern for one's legacy. They talk about experiencing pain through work in church settings, noticing emotions that arise in ourselves and others, and coming home to God and ourselves—all while considering the impact of secondary trauma on people in pastoral and helping professions, ways to distinguish between shutdown and rest, and our response to the invitation of God. In this episode, the Jim and Trisha host guests Chris and Kurt from Brimstone coaching to engage in a deep conversation about leadership, self-awareness, and the mental models that shape our approach to work and relationships. They explore the importance of slowing down, reflecting, and questioning existing assumptions about what it means to be an effective leader. This episode wraps up with a powerful reminder: “You don't have to be as tired as you are.” Chris Godfredson and Kurt Bash have both come out of leadership and supervisory roles in a variety of business kind of contexts and then transitioned into church ministry where they have each led in a variety of contexts. They are the co-founders of Brimstone Coaching Group. Kurt Bush began his working career in the manufacturing world. He spent time working for a large manufacturing company in various roles over 10 years, with the majority of that time being spent in Human Resources and Production Supervision. He was then called out of that into seminary, and subsequently, full-time vocational ministry. Over the last 6 years, he has served and led churches in and through both minor and major changes, along with helping leaders establish a clear sense of “who we are together.” It's his work in his own life that fuels the passion that he feels in helping others do their own work. Chris Godfredsen made the transition a number of years ago from printing the news to telling the Good News. He has a growing understanding of Family Systems theory and Internal Family Systems, and he uses tools and resources that help people stop doing things that have hampered their growth for so long so they can live whole lives. These tools have also been helpful in conflict resolution work with co-workers and leadership teams. The late Dr. Paul Tournier, known by many as the twentieth century's most famous Christian physician, wrote a book back in 1954 titled “The Meaning Of Persons” that offers some very helpful insights for today's world as we try to figure out how to best navigate social media in healthy ways. Tournier said that we all have to recognize the disparity that exists between who we know ourselves to be on the inside, along with how we decide to present ourselves to other people. He calls this disparity the difference between what we know to be our person, and the personage we present to the world. Because social media allows us to create, fabricate, curate, and present a false self to our followers, this disparity can be especially wide in today's world. Tournier says we become contradictory beings. The further apart our persons and our personages are, the greater will be our problems with mental health, for part of our lives will be lie. Could it be that this is at the heart of our kids mental health issues?
Where do you turn when life lowers you to the end of your rope? In the second half of Romans 7, we discover a pathway to communing with God that looks less like climbing and more like seeing life as it actually is, and ourselves as those who struggle and stumble. This means Jesus isn't away and unaware of the dark and scary places of your life that feel like death (strained relationships, losing a job, receiving critical feedback, a bad diagnosis, etc.) but already there working with a power greater than we could ever engineer. *In 1965 the psychiatrist R.D.LAING formed a commune in an East London community centre called Kingsley Hall where the psychotic and the schizophrenic could live on equal terms with their carers. There were no locks and no anti-psychotic drugs but there were all-night therapy sessions, dinners with visiting mystics and high grade LSD available to any who chose to take it *The Neuro-psychiatrist Anthony David came to the Bureau to talk about Laing and about how his groundbreaking book The Divided Self propelled him into the status of a countercultural guru. He grew his hair, he wore beads, he toured America speaking to large audiences and was asked to pronounce on all sorts of matters far beyond the subject of madness. *We dig into Laing's life and work, successes and shadows, the subjects of mental health and psychedelics, talk about Van Gogh, David Bowie, Syd Barrett and the links between creativity and madness. And we hear about Tony's own work in London with those suffering from acute mental disorders. *For Tony's book 'Into the Abyss' https://oneworld-publications.com/work/into-the-abyss/ *For the Bureau of Lost Culture http://www.bureauoflostculture.com #rdlaing, #madness, #psychedelics, #mentalhealth, #london #schizophrenia, #psychosis, #thedividedself, #sydbarrett, #bowie, #psychiatry, #counterculture, #kingsleyhall, #anthonydavid, #vangogh

This week, we put the spotlight on contemporary Hollywood's current love affair with Old Hollywood. We spelunk into the hole at the center of the Marilyn/Norma Jean enigma and unpack the symptoms of female movie star pathology and "I'm a star!" hysterics. We also discuss the security of artifice and the timeless allure of Golden Age red carpet styling. This very cinephilic episode features dialogues on recent hits such as Blonde and Pearl, upcoming titles like Babylon and Barbarella, and classics such as Spartacus and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. ‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵‿Links:Image board: https://pin.it/2xfrbOFNPG on the history of actresses: https://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/the-first-actresses/first_actresses_exhibition/first-actresses-explore Wendy Lesser's "The Disembodied Body of Marilyn Monroe": https://www.are.na/share/rRqEuiE Joyce Carol Oates on Blonde: https://twitter.com/joycecaroloates/status/1575953895163015168?s=12&t=DH6lGA8gtHNZtSWjP-jOhQR.D. In this episode, Will and Adam are joined by Sasha Warren from unsoundmind.org to discuss the work of critical psychiatrist R.D. Laing, focusing on the first part of his book "The Divided Self" and its notion of the ontological insecurity of the schizophrenic mode of experience. We explore Laing's phenomenological method, his formulations of the self's anxiety about its being, and question the contemporary values of his Ontological Security system. Thinkers also discussed are Foucault, Freud, Deleuze, Guattari, and many more.Contribute to Acid Horizon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastSubscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhi Happy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comNew Revolts (Matt's Blog): https://newrevolts.com/Revolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/Merch Store: http://www.crit-drip.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcast)

To start with, Laing states that the basic purpose of this book is to make madness, and the process of going mad, comprehensible. The full title is The Divided Self: An Existential Study in Sanity and Madness. Okay, what’s the definition of existentialism? It’s a philosophical movement that stresses the individual’s unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for making meaningful, authentic choices in a universe seen as purposeless or irrational. What did this all mean to Bowie? We do know that his brother was schizophrenic. And, we go into that in more detail in this episode. Laing’s approach to understanding the schizophrenic is one of understanding a human being, who’s world is his reality, a reality just as valid as yours or ours. We agreed that if we were trying to understand a friend or family member who was schizophrenic, this would be the book to read. That said, it is a lot to take in. So, if you’re reading along with the book club but haven’t completed the book yet, dive into the podcast anyway. It won’t spoil the book, and it just might give you another angle from which to view it. Maybe even one close to Bowie’s.
This is the first episode I began to go through the book “ The Happiness Hypothesis” from Author Jonathan Haidt. I start with Chapter 1 “ The Divided Self “ and touch on a few of my favorite parts.
Do you feel the tension that comes when shedding off your old self and living into the freedom Jesus offers? From Romans 7:1-9 and 18-25, Rashad Clemons speaks truth into the honest struggle to live a Christian life and our longing for ultimate detention and renewal.
Join us this week to chat with Chuck as he shares his story struggling with worthiness to busyness and the journey he is on to find wholeness within himself. His book: “Wholeheartedness - Busyness, Exhaustion, and Healing the Divided Self” is available where all books are sold and you can get connected with chuck at: www.chuckdegroat.net
Welcome to another episode of the Bowie Book Club, where wild speculation and grasping for straws about Bowie’s favorite books has reigned supreme since 2016. This time, we read The Divided Self by R.D. Laing, a treatise about schizophrenia and injecting humanism into the science of psychology. And Greg says "So yeah" about 50 times.
Welcome to the Summer Retreat 2018 Part One. In this episode Josh describes the extended prayer experience through praying with the heart, mind, soul, and strength. The two goals of this retreat are to identify your own personal spirituality and then to stretch beyond that prayer toward wholeness, to integrate into holiness. As we prepare for this summer experience Josh guides us through praying a section of C.S. Lewis' famous sermon, "The Weight of Glory." Indeed its not that our desires are too strong but that they are too weak. Stay tuned. The Introduction Part Two of the Summer Retreat 2018 is a spiritual conversation with Chuck DeGroat mostly about his book, Wholeheartedness: Busyness, Exhaustion, and Healing the Divided Self.
