What happens when memory disappears overnight? In this episode of Monday Science, Dr. Bahijja Raimi-Abraham explores the fascinating yet heartbreaking story of Nesh Pillay, whose life was upended by severe memory loss due to a traumatic brain injury. Inspired by the documentary 50,000 First Dates (this episode contains spoilers), this episode unpacks the science behind memory formation, the impact of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and the emotional toll on both patients and caregivers.Dr. Bahijja delves into the complexities of brain function, discussing conditions like functional neurological disorder, post-concussion syndrome, and psychogenic amnesia. She also highlights the role of early diagnosis, public awareness, and ongoing research in understanding and treating memory-related disorders.Beyond the science, this episode touches on the deeply personal side of brain injuries—how relationships are tested, how patients fight to be believed, and how caregivers navigate the unknown.

Great news for scienceheads! Friend of the show Chai has joined us to talk about series 12 episode 4, "Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror"! It's an episode that was very much written in the era of Nikola Tesla fandom, and we all have some opinions about that, except for Sam who is just smiling and nodding. Student engagement is key for learning. This is especially important for subjects like science. Some studies have found that while most students enjoy science, many dislike science classes. Why are students less interested in science, especially as they get older? How can we make science education more engaging and accessible for all students? In this episode, Kevin discusses making science education interesting with the host and producer of Planetary Radio, Mat Kaplan.
In this 152nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week, we discuss the free exchange of ideas, in light of Matt Taibbi's revelations about how the story of Hunter Biden's laptop was censored inside Twitter, and Kanye West going explicitly antisemitic on InfoWars. Why should Kanye be heard, given that what he is saying is awful? We also discuss chemist Anna Krylov's newest piece, who has seen first-hand what happens when ideas are censored and events disappeared. The National Science Foundation awards a large amount of money to an organization called Hacks/Hackers, who use that money to “discover” that Bret is a conservative who spreads vaccine misinformation. Meanwhile, Pfizer mocks people who try to figure things out for themselves, and receives a Reuters Pharma Award. The idea of the seductive sex robot is the stuff of myth, legend and science fiction. From the myth of Laodamia in Ancient Greece to twenty-first century shows such as Westworld, robots in human form have captured our imagination, our hopes and our fears. But beyond the fantasies there are real and fundamental questions about our relationship with technology as it moves into the realm of robotics. In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to computer scientist and sex-robot expert Kate Devlin about how the emerging and future development of sexual companion robots might affect us and the society in which we live. They discuss the social changes arising from emerging technologies, the gender gap in the supply of artificial companionship, and how robots can enhance — but not replace — human relationships. --- Bronwyn Williams is a futurist, economist, trend analyst and host of The Small Print. We are very pleased to be joined by returning guest Danielle Carr, anthropologist and historian of science who is finishing her PhD at Columbia, to chat about her excellent new essay on the (anti-)political epistemology of the pop sci style as represented by the work of the genre's golden boy, Carl Zimmer. We discuss science as both an institution and ideology that, like other such things with authority and power in society, must be subjected to ruthless critical analysis. And yet, nearly all critique of science has been forfeited to the most extreme right-wing denialism. No longer! It's time to reclaim ground for a leftist, materialist examination of science. Welcome to the Self-love Science Podcast. I'm Janice Cruz, a self-love scientist. One day before a breast cancer diagnosis the life I lived was one of extreme fear, sadness, worthlessness, and despondency. I was propelled into an incubator style healing journey where, under pressurized circumstances, I learned to become fearless, resilient, brave, and most importantly I learned how to recognize the hero in the mirror. During my healing journey I came across a million ways that people healed themselves physically, spiritually, and emotionally. One day, while reading a book about a miraculous healing story, I came across a concept that by learning to love myself I could heal and be well for life. My first question was "how the hell do I love myself?" Over the last two years, I have spent nearly all of my time mastering the abstract concept of self-love and bringing into the realm of reality. Self-love is the best love. I hope all of your dreams come true. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/selflovescience/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/selflovescience/support

Peccary, also known as Javelina, are pig-like creatures that are not actually pigs. Peccaries are found throughout Central and South America and in the southwestern area of North America. The collared peccary is well-adapted to live around humans, and could be considered the raccoons of Arizona. Like raccoons or any wild animal, they should not be fed by humans, and though generally harmless, can attack when threatened. So make sure that you, and your pets, leave them alone. Peccaries are ecosystem engineers and keystone species, meaning the loss of peccaries will have significant ramifications for ecosystems. Peccaries are important because they disperse seeds, control tree growth, and create important watering holes. Unlike when humans engineer their ecosystems, peccary engineers are necessary for the ecosystem to thrive. Listen now to learn about Peccaries, the pig-like omnivores of the Americas. Wouldn’t it be great if science could give us the straight facts on dating? Well actually, it does! When on the dating scene herself, psychologist Dr. Duana Welch, looked to psych research for guidance. She shares all she learned in her blog, Love Science, and in her Love Factually book series. Chris Lee is back! With a brand new record. Chris retired from music for a few years but missed the adulation, and also has a few things to get off his chest. The new songs are gathered under the album title, Protest Songs and Party Anthems and Chris plays one of each on this Happy Hour. After you hear the first song, the question you're going to have answer is this: should Chris technically get a visit from The Secret Service and get hauled off for questioning? He maintains that he is not actually advocating that we lynch the President, but that we hang him after a trial has found him guilty of treason. It's a fine line. Mary Devon Dupuy is uninviting you to her wedding. Mary Devon is a comedian but she's not kidding when she says you better not show up at her wedding, even though she somehow mistakenly has listed her wedding openly online complete with directions and an RSVP button. If you Google Mary Devon's name hopefully by now you won't find it. But you will find her doing comedy around New Orleans, regularly at The Dragon's Den where she hosts an evening called F*ck Yeah Comedy. (We have to use the asterisk or they apparently kick us off Facebook and iTunes and other platforms, even though I f'kn Love Science has like a million followers so go figure...) Cliff Ussery didn't grow up in New Orleans but in a way he did. As a kid Cliff's parents sent him here in the Summer to hang with his cousins. Now as an adult he's come back. Wait till you hear what he's been up to working for The Saints and Pelicans. Professional sports is apparently rough at every level, even for the poor unpaid suckers who sell T-shirts at games. Andrew Duhon is gearing up for Breakfest, his annual Jazz fest early morning concert. This year it comes complete with a string quartet. If you've never been it's totally recommended. Hän nostaa tuoreessa kirjassa Tajuaako kukaan, esille esimerkkinä I Fucking love Science facebook -sivun, jolla on yli 25 miljoonaa tykkääjää. Erehdysekspertin toimittaa Raimo Tyykiluoto.

Welcome to the show Dr. Duana Welch, self proclaimed relationship science nerd with a psychology doctorate to back it up. Duana joins the show not to just give love advice with the what's and hows, but brings the science to answer the why's. She's so effective and fun to listen to because she leaves opinion out of her advice and relies solely on research and science. Dr. Welch joins the show to talk about many topics including: why married people are so happy, what increases the odds of divorce, your most important life decisions, the link between child abuse and genetics, what men/woman are (scientifically) looking for in a mate, why people cheat, love at first sight and so much more! At the Harbour School in Hong Kong, TED Senior Fellow Cesar Harada teaches citizen science and invention to the next generation of environmentalists. He's moved his classroom into an industrial mega-space where imaginative kids work with wood, metal, chemistry, biology, optics and, occasionally, power tools to create solutions to the threats facing the world's oceans. There, he instills a universal lesson that his own parents taught him at a young age: "You can make a mess, but you have to clean up after yourself."
