A lot of times it can be quite difficult for an expert to translate their in-depth knowledge to a wider audience. After all, they know all the technicalities, their industry lingo, and that can make their copy too jargon rich. So, Gio's genius is to take their expertise and shape and shift it to a wider audience, who are then able to receive and hear it and get excited about it. The man that released the 2 books by Eugene Schwartz, which had gone out of print, but not demand, was Brian Kurtz - another podcast guest. Will Gio Marcus Still Create Copy in Her 80s? The one thing that stood out was when Gio said: I don't feel a sense of scarcity. I love recommending other copywriters. Gio specialises in sales pages. Not websites, nor pamphlets. The topic is also a bar for some clients. If it is not a good fit, she'll recommend the prospect to another copywriter. By letting them down gently. A large percentage of her clients are female. And she writes to a female audience. That audience is typically older than herself, such as 50s, 60s and 70s. Celebrity Copywriter Style Differences There are style differences between writing to older and younger audiences: Younger - more slang, punchier copy.

Drayton Bird started off his career being trained by Draper Daniels – the inspiration for Don Draper in Mad Men – he then worked his way to the top of the direct marketing world. His agency was bought by David Ogilvy and became Global Creative Director of Ogilvy & Mather Direct which was the largest direct marketing agency in the world. David Ogilvy said "Drayton Bird knows more about direct marketing than anyone in the world." Drayton is the author of several of the top marketing books including the classic Commonsense Direct Marketing and How to Write Sales Letters that Sell. He talks about the three graces of direct marketing, reveals how we got the nickname "Mummy Mummy Bird", shares the fool proof way to separate stated from revealed preferences and tells stories about working with some of the advertising greats. It was a huge moment for me to speak to my marketing hero, I learnt my trade largely from his books and I'm delighted he found the time to appear on the podcast.

Look at your competitors and see if there is something small that you can do better or differently. What is happening to the messages you are sending out – this has to be tracked and analysed. You need to know about every aspect of your business, what's working and what's not. It's all about asking questions all of the time to everyone. When people haven't paid for something they see it as having no value. When they have paid for something they are then a customer. The first aim of any business is to not make a loss. Businesses fail not because they lack ideas but because they don't measure and track. The database in any business is a core asset. Skill at the art of nit picking High standards of personal ethics - good copywriters are big people without pettiness. Guts under pressure, resilience in defeat. - sometimes people don't respond, when you get turned down, it is depressing, so be persistent. Brilliant brains, not safe plodders - ordinary people are not good at writing copy. Most good copywriters tend to be a little odd in some way other. A capacity for hard work and midnight oil. Charisma, charm and persuasiveness. Ogilvy had a way of changing the subject without warning. The secret of success in advertising was 'charm'. A streak of unorthodoxy. Look at things from a different angle to other people. The courage to make tough decisions. Inspiring enthusiasts - got to be able to motivate. Inspire people to follow and trust you. A sense of humour. 44% of Britain don't like their jobs! A burning desire to take money off people. David Ogilvy once said “Drayton Bird knows more about direct marketing than anyone in the world." He has spoken in 53 countries for many organisations. These include American Express, Audi, Bentley, British Airways, Cisco, Deutsche Post, Ford, IBM, McKinsey, Mercedes, Microsoft, Nestle, Philips, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Unilever, Visa and Volkswagen. Drayton Bird has been named by the chartered institute of marketing as one of 50 living individuals who have shaped today's marketing. Other names included Philip Kotler, Tom Peters and Theodore Levitt. Drayton is best-known as a direct marketing expert but has also worked in Advertising, Public Relations, Research and Telemarketing, Franchising and Experiential Marketing. Advertising legend David Ogilvy said he “knows more about direct marketing than anyone else in the world” and that his speeches are “both educational and hilariously funny.” Since he entered advertising in 1958, Drayton Bird has worked in 51 countries with many great brands. These include American Express, for whom he created a special marketing course for senior executives, British Airways, Cisco, Deutsche Post, Ford, Hargreaves Lansdown, IBM, McKinsey, Microsoft, Nestle, The Prudential, Philips, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Unilever, Virgin and Visa. His book, Commonsense Direct and Digital Marketing, out in 17 languages, has been the UK's best seller on the subject every year since 1982. He has written 4 other marketing books, including How to write a sales letter that sells, now in its 3rd edition, and well over 1,000 columns for publications around the world.
