In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we're excited to bring on Dr. Chris Seabury, Texas A&M Professor of Vet Medicine, to talk a little bit about Chronic Wasting Deisease (CWD) in whitetail deer and what kind of research and practices are being led to do so. There has been a lot of discussion around CWD and money spent to try and influence a healthier deer herd, but sometimes the answers can be hard to find. What better guy to ask than Dr. Seabury. We hope you guys enjoy this podcast as much as we did. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Thank you so much, Dearest Listeners for taking the time to tune into the library of episodes, where I endeavor to offer something that provides a bit of insight, and perhaps gives you something to reflect upon.As you look at the title of this episode, just maybe the "Art of Selfishness" is the part that jumps out. In most episodes, I talk about the astrological cosmic weather, meaning how the planets and signs line up. As I pondered how to begin talking about this reallypowerful council of planets, all moving into the sign of Aquarius, and what this means for each of us, suddenly the "Art of Selfishness" downloaded into my awareness. Here's a bit of background. The "Art of Selfishness" is the title of a book written by psychologist, Dr. David Seabury. Like you, I inquired of the "Cosmic downloaders", why this book? Well, the best that I can discern is that it's a very Aquarian book.Dr. Seabury's writing was based on client cases of the 1930s; the book was first published in 1937, and would go on to have numerous reprints. His counseling approach for helping people, was one of supporting them to become aware of their own unique core being. His book in many ways was "radical, innovative and ahead of it's time. These are all descriptive attributes about the sign of Aquarius. Thus, in this part one episode, my topic is about finding the houses where you have the sign of Aquarius, and also its co- guiding planets, Uranus and Saturn. In addition, it is really important to give attention to where the planet Pluto is taking up residence in your chart. The essential question is what area of your life do you deserve to "reinvent your vision," the true essence of who you are? By way of example, do you have Aquarius positioned on your 4th house? In keeping with the traditional attributes of this Moon guided house, you have been a "nurturer and motherer" of everyone and everything that has knocked on your door. But now, Pluto in Aquarius is going to move through your 4th. More than likely, Uranus in whatever sign, is going to have something to say also. The question for your 4th house self, might be something like why haven't you taken care of yourself? What is the new vision that you need to nurture for you? How might you apply the visionary principle, guided by the "Art of Selfishness" to your own life? What's Your Aquarian Vision?I am proud to announce my new offering as a Certified Creative Depth Coach. As a Creative Depth Coach, I provide guidance, support and soul insights on how to discover, explore and navigate your life by recognizing your magnificent "Creative Genius". Kaimana Brummel has long been a bridge builder, but in the aftermath of the Maui wildfires, that role took on a new life as she helped connect organizations and displaced residents with life-sustaining resources. Brummel has also been working with the People's Fund of Maui, a fund started by Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson that provides direct support to impacted Lahaina and Kula residents. Winfrey and Johnson together contributed $10 million. Brummel is part of a group of community members helping to convey what residents need. Brummel is the director of advancement at Seabury Hall, her alma mater where she helps students, alumni, parents and staff connect with the greater community and vice versa. Her community focus stems from being part of the first ‘Aha Pūnana Leo cohort on Maui. “So then we had friends who were from Ke‘anae, so we could go to Ke‘anae and be immersed in ‘āina there. We had friends who were hula practitioners, so then we could join hālau. We had friends who were experts in botany, and, you know, it became our community, they became our neighbors.”

Daniel Assetta is as determined as he is talented as he is ready to put in the work. It's not surprising he landed his dream role of Samuel Seabury in the Original Australian company of Hamilton. That story is full circle, starting and ending in New York City. From performing for his family starting at a very young age, to performing all over the world in various roles, Daniel always knew exactly what he wanted to do and he never once apologized for it. And yeah, going viral on TikTok with incredible dance videos from when he was 12 years old is a fun little detour. This week, Daniel reflects on the journey and contemplates what comes next. Daniel Assetta was the original Samuel Seabury in Australia (with the fun bonus of covering King George III), and in this episode you get to hear the story of how that happened. It started in New York City in 2016, took a turn in Australia in 2019, and then stopped cold in 2020 (ugh pandemic). It was a tumultuous time for countless reasons but it has a happy ending: not only did Daniel book Hamilton, but the Australia company was the first one back after lockdown. Daniel is telling me this from his apartment in New York City, so his Hamilton story is truly full circle. Welcome to the first of three episodes with Daniel Assetta, the original Samuel Seabury (and u/s King George III) in Hamilton's Australian company. There's a good chance you've seen Daniel before, either on stage around the world in one of his many roles, or… going viral on TikTok. Does the term "Cotton Eyed Joe Kid" mean anything to you? Daniel has millions of likes and views on his videos of old footage of him dancing as a child. Additionally, Daniel talks about how his lifelong love of performing, starting with putting on shows with his superstar sister Chiara, combined with his unapologetic determination and some of the most supportive family on Earth, led him to where he is today. Seabury Resources For Aging Community Relations Manager Jennifer Brown joined Raquel and Ryan on The Senior Soup Podcast to discuss geriatric care management, which is also known as Aging Life Care Management. Founded in 1924 in Washington, D.C., Searbuy Resources began as a women's retirement home with deep roots in the faith-based community. Next April, Seabury will celebrate its 100th birthday - and yes, they are throwing a big party! At the beginning of the podcast, Jennifer discussed her background in the healthcare industry and her role as Seabury's community relations manager. Jennifer discussed the care management services that Seabury offers older adults, and she shared the appropriate time for someone to reach out to a care manager for help with their aging loved ones. The care management field is relatively new, Jennifer explained. It started locally about 30 years ago and is a specialty area of licensed social workers who are available to assist older adults and their families with various care needs, social needs, and housing needs. Care managers are hired to provide the same care and support that a next of kin would do for an older adult with no next of kin or a family far away. Care managers develop care plans to connect older adults and their families with home care agencies, primary care physicians, specialists, therapists, elder law attorneys, daily money managers, house cleaning services, and so many other resources. Aging life care managers also advocate for older adults, ensuring that their needs and safety are considered. They help mediate and arbitrate between family members who may have different opinions about the best course of action for an older adult. Families can contact aging life care managers when an older adult's situation declines or if the extended family is having difficulty managing their loved one's care. Care managers' hourly rates run between $150 to $170. Call Seabury Resources for Aging today at (202) 364-0020 if you or a loved one could benefit from the services an aging life care manager can provide.

XXV. The Merchant's House Museum is one of New York City's most important and cherished historic house museums. Built in 1832 and still intact to this day, the house was home to patriarch Seabury Tredwell and his family for just about 100 years before opening to the public as a museum in 1933. Nowhere can one see the antebellum world of Old New York quite as clearly one can see here with much of the family's original furniture and belongings still in place. Hidden in the Tredwell family tree is Effingham Nichols, the husband of Seabury's eldest daughter. Born into old Knickerbocker New York, Effingham rose in wealth and stature to become a true player in the Gilded Age that ended the century brushing up against Astors and Vanderbilts. Join me and my guest, Merchant's House historian Anne Haddad for a look at his life, what he did and where he was, to gather a very personal and extraordinary picture of the life of a long forgotten, but very real, gilded gentleman and just how that life and the life of others like him, came to be. Credits: The Gilded Gentleman is produced by Kieran Gannon and is a production of Bowery Boys Media.

Middle Market Mergers and Acquisitions by Colonnade Advisors
This episode continues with our “industry spotlight series” where we focus on specific trends and opportunities in middle-market M&A transactions. Our previous episodes have covered four industries in which Colonnade has played a significant role as an M&A advisor to both buy-side and sell-side clients. We add F&I Agencies & Payment Plan Providers as industries where we deeply know the dynamics and players so as to provide exceptional service to clients who hire us to assist them in a transaction. Colonnade has studied the F&I Agencies and Payment Plan Provider markets for the last 20+ years. We have worked on nearly 30 M&A transactions on the buy-side and the sell-side. We have gotten to know the industry players and the buyers. We've identified some high-opportunity M&A plays that could help to drive even more value, scale, and customer satisfaction in the industry. Spotlight on F&I Agencies (1:00) In this first part of our episode, we answer the following questions: Where do F&I agencies sit in the F&I ecosystem? (1:00) What does a typical F&I agency look like? (7:00) What is going on in terms of M&A and what are the value drivers in the industry? (9:00) What is driving M&A transactions right now and what are some potential M&A plays? (12:00) Where do F&I agencies sit in the F&I ecosystem and what value do they provide? (1:00) Gina: Between the F&I administrators and the F&I office and the dealership, there are F&I agencies. They are independent agencies with independent agents. They are like insurance agents. They bring together the product administrators and the dealers. Gina: The agents have deep knowledge about the products they represent. They can train the F&I office on those products and how to sell the products. They also act as the middle man or the interface with the administrator. They are one distribution arm for the administrators, which makes them critical in the ecosystem. They are a valuable component of the overall F&I ecosystem. Jeff: The F&I agency is a particular point in the value chain. It's a differentiator. Some administrators sell to dealers through a direct sales force, others use F&I agents. Gina: There are administrators who go direct to dealers, but most administrators also use independent agents. They may have a direct sales force, but they have independent agents also. The only sector where that seems to not always be the case is selling into independent dealerships. You tend to see more direct agents that are employed by the administrators selling into the independent dealerships. Gina: An important component of what the agents do is help the dealership with reinsurance. Reinsurance is an important component of a dealership owner's profits. For every contract, every F&I product that is sold, there is a reserve set aside for future claims. F&I agents are usually very fluid and educated in talking about reinsurance and making sure that the dealership has the right reinsurance programs. So they deal with reinsurance, they do training on products, they do training on how to sell products. They sometimes help with staffing in the F&I office, and they'll help with some of the technology that is between the F&I office and the administrator. Gina: F&I represents a third of a dealership's profits. Everybody within the organization and affiliated with the organization is going to make sure that F&I runs smoothly. What does a typical F&I agency look like? (7:00) Gina: There are well over 100 independent agencies, and approximately 75%-80% of F&I agencies are less than 10 employees. There are very few large agencies. There are a few that are scaling, but there really aren't many. There is only one national agency that comes to mind and that's Vanguard (owned by Spectrum Automotive). Vanguard has been very acquisitive in building out its agent network. We also see Brown & Brown, which is a P&C insurance brokerage. They've been acquiring F&I agencies over the last few years. I don't know if they have a national footprint yet, but they're probably getting pretty close. And then you have acquired a lot of small agencies. Jeff: The Brown & Brown example is an interesting one that we've watched over the last five to six years as they've entered the industry. We've always thought their participation in the F&I agency world makes a lot of sense, given the parallels to the P&C distribution market. What is going on in terms of M&A and what are the value drivers in the industry? (9:00) Gina: We think that the M&A market for F&I agencies will continue to be hot in 2022. (See Gina's cover article in Agent Entrepreneur, 2022 M&A Predictions for F&I Agents) Agent value is driven by a couple of different factors. One is diversification. One of the challenges for these small agencies, just like any small company, is having all of their eggs in one basket. An F&I agency may have one dealership group that represents 40% of sales. That is a gating factor to trading and getting the highest possible value. Agencies that have significant concentration, which I call greater than 15%, trade at a lower multiple than agencies that have little concentration. Another value driver is size. We look at the number of W-2 employees (as well as financials). Jeff: Important when you go to sell these companies: Who owns the dealer relationships? And what's the risk of attrition in a transaction? Gina: A lot of diligence needs to be done in these transactions to really understand the nitty-gritty of who, not just on paper but in practice, owns the relationships. What is driving the M&A transactions right now and what are some potential M&A plays? (12:00) Jeff: It sounds like an industry that could be rolled up further. Following the playbook of the P&C insurance distribution market, you got a lot of mom and pops out there and a few large players. Gina: Both Brown & Brown and Vanguard Dealer Services (Spectrum Automotive) are rolling up agencies. The rest of M&A activity we see is not a roll up, but administrators buying agencies. National Autocare and Portfolio Group have been very inquisitive. There are many other administrators who bought one, two, three agencies, as they attempt to lock in their distribution channels. Gina: There should be another roll up of F&I agencies. There should be a private equity firm that's coming in here saying, “I'm going to put a hundred, $150 million to work and we're going to leverage it. And we're going to buy up 20 F&I agencies. We're going to make a super-agency with national coverage.” That could be uber-successful for everybody involved. It just hasn't happened yet. Jeff: The folks that are acquiring are paying pretty high multiples, and that's a challenge. Any new entrant would have to go in and go big pretty quickly. They'd have to find a platform that they can scale and put a lot of capital to work while holding their nose as they pay big prices upfront. Gina: A lot of the M&A activity we have seen is with an older generation that is retiring. There's also some leakage happening where the younger, talented, hungrier F&I agents are like, “I get it, I can do this.” They leave and go start their own agency. I think we'll see that next-generation starting to trade in about a year or two. Gina: I have one last point I want to cover about F&I agency M&A: what's driving the activity. First of all, there's a lot of money looking for deals. There are private equity firms backing administrators that need to grow inorganically. But we also see a lot of M&A activity at the dealership level. They're getting bigger. Big dealership groups are buying up other dealers, independent shops, and dealership groups. Every time one of those transactions happens, the agent that represents the target dealership is at risk of losing that client. Dealership M&A is driving F&I agency M&A. I think that this is the question that keeps a lot of agents up at night: Are they one or several M&A transactions away from losing a significant portion of their relationships and their livelihood? Spotlight on Payment Plan Providers (18:00) In this second part of our episode, we answer the following questions: How do payment plan providers add value to the auto F&I sector? (18:00) How big is the industry and who are the biggest players? (23:00) Why are payment plan providers a favorite industry of Colonnade? (25:00) What is going on in terms of M&A and what are the value drivers in the industry? (29:00) How do payment plan providers add value to the auto F&I sector? (18:00) Jeff: Payment plan companies came out of the ground around 20 years ago. They started as an offshoot of the insurance premium finance market, which we've talked about in a previous podcast. Fundamentally, this market is designed to help consumers purchase F&I products cost-effectively. Whether you're in a dealership (point of sale) and the F&I person says, “This VSC is going to cost you $3,000” or whether you get a piece of mail about an extended auto warranty (aftermarket), once you get sold on buying the coverage, the questions is always: Do you want to write a check for three grand or do you want to finance it over two or three years? In most cases, the VSC/extended auto warranty gets financed. That's where these payment plan companies come in. Jeff: At the dealership (point of sale), the payment for an F&I product typically gets rolled into the auto loan. It's just one of the line items in the auto loan, and you (as the consumer) pay it off as you go. There are some payment plan providers that focus on point of sale at the dealership, allowing a consumer to finance the product outside the auto loan. In the aftermarket, which is really where we see these payment plans flourish, it's a different dynamic. If you're on the phone with a direct marketer and you agree to buy the coverage, you can put 10% down and pay over 18 or 36 months, depending on the payment plan. Interestingly, they're interest-free and cancelable at any time. And as you continue to drive your car and assess the usefulness of the product, you can cancel it at any time. If you cancel it, all you do is call up the seller or the administrator and say, “I want to cancel my payment plan.” In that case, you get a portion of your money back (the unearned premium). It works in a similar way to the insurance premium finance market. The contract is earned over the life of the product. If it's a five-year product and you're one year into it, you might get 80% of the money back. The payment plan company is indifferent because it will just get their pro rata share back from the administrator and seller. The seller will sell the product to the consumer, and if they attach financing to it, the seller will collect the 10 or 15% down payment. The payment plan company will insert themselves and front the rest of the money to the administrator and to the seller. The administrator has to front some money to the CLIP (1) provider, but the revenue to the seller and the admin fee gets fronted by the payment plan company. Jeff: Our Industry Report on this sector goes into much more detail about the industry. How big is the industry and who are the biggest players (23:00) Jeff: We estimate this is about a $5 billion a year originations market. There's not good data. We've done a number of studies over the years and think that's the size of the market. It grows with auto sales and the adoption of products. It's grown considerably over the last several years. There are probably 10 independent players in the market. There are just a small handful of large players. The biggest players are PayLink, which is owned by Fortress and Milestone. Walco is the next biggest, and they're growing nicely. This is the Walder team that previously ran Mepco and Omnisure, and they've started up a new finance company that's growing quite rapidly. Mepco is a large player, they're top three, that's owned by Seabury. There are other smaller players like Budco, Line 5. Service Payment Plan is a big company in the dealer space, again different dynamics but similar product offering. PayLink, Omnisure, and Mepco really dominate the aftermarket space. Folks like Service Payment Plan dominate the dealer (point of sale) channel. Why are payment plan providers a favorite industry of Colonnade? (25:00) Gina: I love the payment plan business because it is so low-risk. What the payment plan companies do is hold a cash reserve on each funding in case the underlying consumer cancels. And that happens. There are a lot of cancellations in the direct consumer marketing of vehicle service contracts. As we've discussed before, it's not because the contracts are bad contracts, but it's because consumers actually have transparency. In the case of vehicle service contracts rolled into an auto loan, consumers don't get a breakout every month of the components of their auto loan that they're paying. They don't see that 80% of your auto loan payment is for the car, 10% is for the vehicle service contract, et cetera, cetera. But when a consumer is financing or using a payment plan for a vehicle service contract in the aftermarket, they have complete transparency as to what that cost is for. And if they decide as a household, they no longer need that product (they need to redeploy that payment to something else like their mortgage), they can cancel. The payment plan businesses have a cash reserve for this. So it is a very low risk business and has great returns. Jeff: Some of these companies have several hundred million dollars of portfolio and each contract starts out at $3,000 and burns down. These are very granular portfolios. You're not going to take a big loss on any particular contract. Unlike the insurance premium finance industry, the incidence or likelihood of fraud is negligible, and the risk here is quite low given the granularity. We like the short duration of these assets. We like the low loss rates. Generally, these transactions are priced at a 15% to 20% unlevered return. They're very high-yield. There's no credit risk. We're not doing anything with consumer credit risk. We really don't care. We're just managing relationships with sellers and administrators. All those dynamics are favorable to this lending universe. I love this business. It's a niche industry, $5 billion is not the $50 billion commercial P&C market, but it's meaningful and growing. What is going on in terms of M&A and what are the value drivers in the industry? (29:00) Jeff: There really hasn't been much activity as there's a limited universe of players. Some of the administrators are vertically integrating and getting into the payment plan industry. We worked on the initial sale of Mepco to Independent Bank almost 20 years ago. We sold PayLink (which used to be called Warranty Finance Company) to Oxford Financial. It's now owned by Milestone and Fortress. Omnisure: Ed and Paul Walder started up that business from scratch and grew it to a couple hundred million dollars of receivables. We advised on the sale to Fortress. PayLink and Omnisure merged in 2017 and put together two leading players in the industry. The other important transaction to mention is Seabury's acquisition of Mepco out of Independent Bank in 2017. Most recently Walco has come out of the ground. Walco was started in early 2020 by Ed and Paul Walder again, starting up another competitor in the sector. They've grown considerably in recent years and are doing a great job building out that business. We don't see a ton of M&A activity per se, but it's a really interesting market. Part of the challenge from an M&A perspective is that there has not traditionally been a deep bank buyer universe of this product and that confounds me a bit. For all the reasons we mentioned, this is a really interesting, dynamic asset class. It's very similar to insurance premium finance, which has a number of large banks in the sector and a number that want to get into it. The collateral structure looks very similar, except that payment plan providers have higher yields, higher return on assets, and even lower losses. And there's no fraud. I think there's a real opportunity for forward-thinking banks to embrace this asset class and do quite well with very little risk. (1) A CLIP is a commercial liability insurance product that covers the contractual obligations of the insured. A full reimbursement CLIP would indemnify the insured commercial entity for all monies it expends to fulfill a contractual commitment. This is Father Jared Cramer from St. John's Episcopal Church in Grand Haven, Michigan, here with today's edition of Christian Mythbusters, a regular segment I offer to counter some common misconceptions about the Christian faith. I hope the fireworks from the Fourth of July holiday have finally calmed down in your neighborhood. I know it seemed to me like this year's observance was a little more… exuberant than most years. That's probably because there were limited public celebrations this year, the lifting of COVID-19 regulations coming too late for plans to be made. I think it also just felt good, after the year we've all had, to blow some things up. And so, as a late fireworks display of my own, in this week's episode of Christian Mythbusters I would like to tackle the myth of our country's founding being about creating a Christian nation. You might say, I want to blow the whole idea up, if you'll forgive the pun. I always find it amusing when people insist that the United States is a Christian nation because that's kind of the opposite of the point of the whole revolutionary war. After all, the pilgrims, for example, who came to America (indeed, many of the early colonists), were coming from England—a nation that is an explicitly Christian nation with the Church of England serving as the state church and the monarch serving as the supreme governor of the church. Many of the colonists came here seeking religious freedom, especially freedom from an established Christian nation. Now, this is an awkward point to make as an Episcopalian. Our church, after all, is the daughter church of the Church of England, with whom we are still in relationship as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It was awkward after the revolutionary war as well, as many colonists who were devout members of the Church of England were also loyalists to the crown. This includes Samuel Seabury, who some of you know as the loyalist cleric in Lin Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton, a person who is taken down by the title character for his loyalist views. After we declared and then won our independence from the Christian nation of England, the founders were explicit that they did not want to create a similar arrangement here in the United States. They did not want any church, denomination, or religion to consider itself established. The same was actually true in the Episcopal Church because, in a great second act, our newly independent Anglican churches elected Samuel Seabury to be the first bishop of our church. Seabury set sail for England but was refused consecration because—get this, even though he had been a loyalist—he refused to swear allegiance to the monarch. He was a citizen of a newly free country and church and just couldn't do it. He turned to Scotland where, in a story that is much longer than I have time for here, he was consecrated a bishop and able to return home and serve the new Episcopal Church in the United States. The point of all of this is that our country was not founded to repeat the oppressive “Christian nation” from which we many of the colonists had come. Instead, the founders set to create boundaries and walls to keep that very sort of thing from happening. In the book The Myth of a Christian Nation, theologian Greg Boyd explores this myth and not only argues that it is inaccurate, he insists that it is corrosive to Christianity itself. Boyd reminds us that, as Christians, our first loyalty should always be to Jesus Christ and his calling for us to love of God and neighbor. The longing for a “Christian Nation” is really about a longing for the church to have power in society… but the church has a pretty bad track record when it comes to power. In fact, in general, it is when the church eschews power and focuses on love, justice, and mercy that it is far more faithful to the teachings of Christ. The problem with wanting us to be a Christian nation is that it would shift, not only how we engage with non-Christians in our country who then somehow don't become real Americans, but it would shift how we exist with Christians outside our country. Our unity in baptism is surely more important than our citizenship. Don't get me wrong, I celebrated the Fourth of July with my family. We even lit off some fireworks in the driveway (though I tried to ensure they weren't too loud or obnoxious). But the celebration for me was that our country was founded as a place with a dream of liberty and justice for all people, no matter your faith or even if you don't have faith. We have often not lived up to that ideal, but we continue to strive. And I truly believe America is at her best when she ensures all people—and all religions—have the freedom to worship and believe as they believe their God calls them. Just like you. Just like me. Thanks for being with me. To find out more about my parish, you can go to sjegh.com. Until next time, remember, protest like Jesus, love recklessly, and live your faith out in a community that accepts you but also challenges you to be better tomorrow than you are today.

Welcome to Episode 197 of my podcasts The view from the crow's nest and it is Wednesday the 13th 13th 13th of December 2011, and today marks a very important day because it's our first family day out in at least two months, possibly longer. And conversely, it's my first day out in probably about two months, six weeks, probably, I mean, certainly, there's a supermarket around the corner you can walk there in about four minutes. And that's pretty much the furthest I've been in the law in the last two months and the last time I went there was about a month ago, like, I don't leave the house. Generally, so we had this day out today and it was so bloody enjoyable. I mean everything shut, but we'd been told that there's these beautiful lakes. I see these lakes of Seabury beautiful lakes. So you went down to them and basically it's like a retirement village with these artificial lakes boating lakes, and it's just not very impressive put it that way. So we went down there we drove there. We had two missions one to see the lakes and the second one was to get me in some waterproof shoes. Boots she really needs some outdoor boots, so that we can say go hiking it's not that you know hiking but at least she can walk places that are muddy and wet and it's not going to get her shoes, her feet wet. So we went to these lakes and it and they kind of suck but it was fun we know we drove around and we kind of looked and we're like, yeah, this sucks but nonetheless. And that was basically lunchtime. And then we started to head towards the shopping centre where we might be able to get her shoes because you would have thought buying waterproof shoes would be a fairly easy thing. But it's missions around here. No one sells anything like it. And I saw this sign it was like come out of the retirement village of the boating lake and turn left and off you go. But tell Ryan, it was one mile from the seat one kilometre from the sea, and I just thought you know what let's just go right, see the sea. So we drove down and we drove down this lonely road, and then the sea opened up in front of us. And you can see these tracks where people have driven onto the, you know, into the sand or whatever. And there was this big puddle. And sumana said go fast go fast. So like fine. Let's do this. So I drove fast through this puddle. And I had completely forgotten or not forgotten I didn't realise. Yeah. Okay, I'm like that. I didn't realise that with the windows open the puddle would spray into the car, I just thought physics, it would spray out to the side but apparently not. So spray this puddle into me in his face into my face like dirty. Sandy water into the car, and I was laughing about it until I realised I driven too far onto the sand and I wasn't laughing because I couldn't move the car. And so they were like, ah, and there was not a soul about. And we're on this beach, and we tried to go forward we tried going back and of course all we did is bury the car deeper into the sand. And so, okay well you know or something out blah blah blah. Anyways, it transpired when I transferred some other they were, I don't know, some dude appeared. Eventually, some other dude, and he had a towing cable, and then he was like hey I can pull you out. And there's like a, like, Ah, well, you probably find it under the spare tire, really. So he never knew he had that he never knew how to tow him by and be we found out that there's a panel that you pop out of the back of the car and you can screw the towing bar into that panel. So you know, you learn things every day. So this dude pulled us out which is very good. And by that point the kids would go out of the car they'd, you know, finally got over their agoraphobia and they've got out the four walls and they're on the beach. And this is the middle of January, and it was beautiful sunshine, beautiful blue sky. And, you know, almost, almost t shirt weather for the beach. So the kids started playing, and they were happily playing on thi --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theviewfromthecrowsnest/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theviewfromthecrowsnest/support

Stephan Seabury is a high school teacher at a charter school in Utah who came to our attention through an article published in The Salt Lake Tribune about the need for teacher leadership. Mr. Seabury discusses how important this is especially in light of the coronavirus closures and how to best resume work with students in the fall. While this episode was recorded on May 8, 2020, the content has even more implications for the voice needed from teacher leaders in a Black Lives Matter context. This week Bryan tells us the story of Samuel Seabury (yes, the guy from Hamilton) and the founding the Episcopal Church! We trace the history from Anglicans, through the colonies, and into the independent United States. Our saint this week is Saint Cecilia, who checks off all the early female saint tropes.
In the second hour, Chris & Lisa welcome Julie Quintero-Schulz, Director of Marketing for The Club at New Seabury. Jaimee Seabury found a love for retail and home design early on … so she carved out a career path where she would be immersed in a place that would bring her joy. After following her passion through various furniture retail brands, she landed a job working with Shabby Chic and moved to Los Angeles. When she became pregnant with her first son, she knew she wanted to continue on with Shabby Chic after maternity leave. Working with her boss, Jaimee created a schedule and work environment that would enable her to continue in her role and be an active mother the way she wanted it to be. Now with two boys, she continues living her passion and has managed to find a happy balance between her work life and mom life.
What actually happened during Stephanie St Clair’s early life is up for debate. Most records suggest that she was born on 12/24 in 1897 on the island of Guadeloupe and that she travelled to the US when she was 13. Others suggest that she was actually 23 when she arrive and that she was born in 1887. Still others say she went to Canada first and served as a maid. All of this uncertainty may have been on purpose. She was educated so she would have known her age and the year she was born. All the records agree that she eventually moved to Harlem, arriving a few years before the Great Migration. She became the leader of a gang called the 40 thieves that ran extortion and theft rackets. She also invested ten thousand dollars of her own money to develop a money racket and become a policy banker. It’s a combination of investing, gambling and the lottery. Became the most successful numbers game in Harlem. She used her position and wealth to become an activist and inform people of their legal and voting rights. She tried to complain to the authorities about police brutality but was ignored. So she used her existing relationship with the newspaper and took out ads accusing senior officers of corruption. This lead to her being arrested and spending 8 months in a workhouse. Once she was released she testified to the Seabury commission which investigated police corruption, telling them about kickbacks she had played and giving them a list of officers that had played her numbers game. Once Prohibition ended the mobs tried to move in on her territory. The Jewish mob tried to move in on her game by beating up and killing her number operators. She refused to pay them money and had the store fronts attacked, the police raided his operation and seized 12 million dollars. After that she left the numbers game to her associate Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson. Later, the leader of the Jewish mob was ordered to be taken out. St Clair sent him a telegram while he was in the hospital that said ‘As ye sow so shall ye reap’. In her retirement she took on more of a role in social activism. She later met her husband, Sufi Abdul Hamid, who was known as Black Hitler for his anti-Semitic views. He started cheating on her with a fortune teller and tried to open a business with her money. St Clair shot him and spent 10 years in prison for it. Once she was released she continued to work on her activism. She died at 83, living with Bumpy.

At the time when they were published, Seabury Quinn's stories for Weird Tales were among the publication's most popular titles, but today, his name has been eclipsed by his contemporaries H.P. Gordon tells us how he landed at Toad & Co, his experience there, his time at the OIA, his love for surfing and much more. Facebook Twitter Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast Support the show Please give us a rating and review HERE Show Notes Gordon tells us about how he landed at Toad & Co, his experience there, his time at the OIA, his love for surfing and much more. First Exposure to the Outdoors My parents are really big into camping, first tent camping and then we got travel trailer when they got older and didn't like the tent set up. So did a ton of camping around around the East Coast. When I was young I was in the scouts and actually was an Eagle Scout before the age of 14. It wasn't a particularly popular thing to be but we had a great scoutmaster that just loved adventure travel and just getting out. So we would do the 50 mile afoot floats in the Adirondacks just did some really cool whitewater rafting and fun adventures. So I think those probably solidified my love for it. And then when I went to college I got in the outdoor club in college and just became a lifelong participant and enthusiasm of those activities. Things we talked about Toad and Co Outdoor Retailer Students for Social Responsibility Ben and Jerry's Stonyfield Farms Patagonia Planet Access Advice, tips I think in terms of getting in I think it's a great time. I think 10 years ago there was not a lot of young innovation or there was no obvious next generation of brands coming in and now the whole venture out section has so many new business models, new products it truly makes me feel old. And I realize OK now that full generations are adults I need to figure out exactly how they operate because they have different views maybe than I do, and in a lot of ways involved in the right way. You've got this young energy and I see it in companies too. I mean we are I would say at least, I'd bet you almost 50 percent but certainly 40 percent are under the age of 30. There is no lack of enthusiasm and engagement for careers in the industry. Unfortunately our industries are not like the investment banking industry or the consulting where they have these very refined and honed recruiting engines. Hacking your way into the industry is still the case. My best advice is Be proactive. Find out about the companies you are interested in, about the areas or interests you have. Go to outdoor retailer show or reach out and talk to the folks in these businesses. And you know just make yourself known and chances are if you have skills and a passion you're going to get an opportunity. I think if you're in the industry the opportunity is what I call second generation, the first generation are getting to retirement age. The second generation has learned a lot but we're not technologically savvy. We don't really fully understand what the direct to consumer models are and so there's so much innovation opportunity. I think treating the opportunity to have a career in the industry with a seriousness that says this is a profession and I'm one of the best in class and I want to the best I can be and enjoy everything the industry brings you'll go far. I think there's just so much opportunity. I think the industry and I continue to grow and we continue to be more relevant than ever. And I think if we get better at telling our stories and growing our audience and we get more sophisticated in terms of our fashion style quotient and our business sophistication. I think there's a lot more opportunity for the industry to have influence across many other industries. It's a great time to start a career in the industry. Former Two-Time ABI Resident Scholar Jack F. Williams, an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgia State University College of Law, and Susan H. In 2016, we conducted an extensive series of interviews and surveys to find out how OIA—the outdoor industry’s membership trade association—can best support outdoor companies. What we learned is that our members see us as a convener—the unifying entity best equipped to galvanize the industry around three important issues: policy, participation and sustainable business. We then identified individuals who are already working to move the needle on those issues within their respective companies. The Renewal Workshop may be a newcomer to the outdoor industry, but its founders—Nicole Bassett and Jeff Denby—are mainstays in sustainable apparel manufacturing. Toad&Co, headed up by Gordon Seabury, is one of the first outdoor companies to sign on as a brand partner with Renewal Workshop to make sure that their damaged, used or excess product doesn’t end up in a landfill. Hear about their collaboration to positively influence the end-of-life cycle of outdoor apparel. Gordon, Nicole, and Jeff demonstrate that that through collaboration, our industry as a whole can do more so much more than a single company or individual can do alone. That is the concept behind our new campaign and our strategic vision: Together We Are A Force. Want to learn more about these individuals and the work OIA is doing to foster collaboration throughout the industry and to catalyze change? David Seabury Try out your ideas by visualizing them in action. -- David Seabury This is a short and simple quote with great meaning built in. To me, it is critical to use visualization when trying to Get The Goals You Set. Visualizing you ideas, your dreams, your goals, gives you a chance to try them out. It's like going to the biggest store and being able to play with all of the gadgets, toys, stuff and see what it does. By using Visualization, you can put your goals, dreams and ideas into action. You can SEE Yourself Doing it. You can see your self being the person you want to be. You can picture yourself perfectly executing whatever you need to do to Win! Don't do this while you are driving, please, but when you get home in a safe, comfortable place Sit Down Take 5 deep breaths - Inhale deeply Close your eyes lightly Take 5 more deep breaths - Inhale deeply Start thinking about your favorite, most happy, excited place. Get a vision of that favorite place in your mind. When you have a good vision of that place in your mind - take your hand and place them palms together softly. Take 5 Deep breaths. Then slowly open your eyes. When you do this at home, you should get relaxed and be able to visualize your happy place where you are your most excited. I am going to put together a visualization audio for you to start working on a visualization exercise. This exercise here will start preparing you to visualize yourself in your comfortable, happy place. We will grow the exercise from there. Stay tuned for more. Go out and make today a great day. In 1931, Judge Samuel Seabury was leading an investigation for Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt into corruption in New York's magistrate courts when a witness in the investigation named Vivian Gordon was found murdered in the Bronx. Because of the public demand for answers in this high-profile murder case, FDR could no longer keep his uneasy peace with Tammany Hall and expanded the scope of Seabury's investigation. What Seabury's team uncovered brought down Mayor Jimmy Walker and began to topple the Tammany Hall stranglehold on New York City politics.Joining me in this episode is writer Michael Wolraich, author of The Bishop And The Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age.Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
