Summer is a time for playing in the sun, splashing around, sleeping in, roasting marshmallows and all around soaking up a season of chillaxin. But it can also be a season of planning. Before we know it the chaos of the school year will descend upon us. And if we don't plan thoughtfully, we may end up overwhelmed when our fall schedules start to pick up.How can we prepare at a high level now so that we don't lose sight of our top priorities when daily pressures begin to pile up? Why is it important to think through our priorities and values before planning our schedules and routines? What are your family priorities and values? What are some of the most important things to keep top of mind when deciding which activities to say yes to and which to say no to?“Time cannot be used over again. Time cannot be taken to the cleaners and brought back as good as new, to be used another way. Childhood cannot be used over again for another set of preparations nor a different set of memories.” –Edith Schaeffer, Common Sense Christian Living. Listen in for a conversation with Lyndsey Mimnagh, homeschool mama of four and the founder of Treehouse Schoolhouse on how to schedule our priorities rather than prioritize our schedules.Check out Treehouse Schoolhouse for loads of beautiful and inspiring resources including nature study, book lists, and family-centered devotionals.Enjoy 20 percent off digital products now through July 28th! Listen along as we begin our journey through the book of Hebrews. Notes//Quotes: Hebrews 1:1-14 - Kim “(1) Whereas pastors in the Christian communities were normally referred to as “elders” or “overseers,” in Hebrews alone among the New Testament documents they are called “leaders” (hegoumenoi) (13:7, 17, 24). Outside the New Testament this designation for church leadership occurs in two early Christian documents, 1st Clement and The Shepherd of Hermas, both of which we know to have been associated with the church at Rome.(2) First Clement, a pastoral letter written from Clement of Rome to the church at Corinth sometime around the end of the first century, demonstrates extensive use of Hebrews. One section in particular (36:1–6) shows direct literary dependence on the book, and the rest of the document bears the marks of Hebrews' influence. Therefore, the earliest evidence of Hebrews' use in the ancient church locates the document in Rome.” - George Guthrie “32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.” (Heb. 10:32-34) “God's Son—heir, agent of creation, sustainer of the universe, Savior, and sovereign—who now sits at the right hand of God… in 1:1-4 we find no fewer than ten weighty topics, which span from heaven to earth and from eternity past to eternity future. The list of themes reads like part of the table of contents in a systematic theology textbook! How can we focus our application when we are confronted with so much substance in such a short space?”  - George Guthrie "The story of divine revelation is a story of progression up to Christ. But there is no progression beyond Him." - F.F. Bruce "Just as the Spirit of God in this passage invites all to come as far as Christ, so He forbids them to overstep this last word of which He makes mention.” - John Calvin “There have been many attempts made by the fathers of the Church to explain the relationship between the two Divine Persons, the Father and the Son; but the explanations had better never have been given, fro the figures used are liable to lead into mistake. Suffice it for us to say that, in the most appropriate language of the Nicene Creed, Christ is “God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God.” He is co-equal with the Father; though how that is, we know not. He stands in the nearest possible relationship to the Father, — a relationship of intense love and delight, so that the Father says of him, “This is my beloved Son.”” - Charles Spurgeon “The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” - C.S. Lewis Dear God, thank You for speaking to us in the Bible, the writings of prophets, who wrote in so many different ways over such a long period of time that we have good reasons to believe in Your absolute truthfulness and faithfulness. Father, we especially thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, through whom You made all things. Through Your Son, O God, You have spoken to us truly in the Bible and through creation. We thank You that in addition to speaking and demonstrating Your will and way of life for us, that Jesus died so You could forgive us and purify us in spite of our sins. We thank You Father that Jesus sits at Your right hand and always intercedes for Your people. Oh God, we thank You for the angels who watch over us as Your servants, and we praise our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ because He is far superior to the angels, for He is Your Son. Indeed, all the angels worship Jesus and so do we, Your children, because He is worthy of our adoration and praise. Lord Jesus, thank You were sitting on the throne of God, for indeed You are God. Unlike the leaders of this world, You rule with justice and righteousness. Indeed, we pray for You to come again quickly and visibly display Your just rule over all in the Kingdom of God. What is biblical manhood? And, “The Toxic War on Masculinity”: A conversation with Nancy Pearcey

Nancy Pearcey joins Dr. Mark Turman to discuss the rise of secular masculinity, what makes a “good” man versus a “real” man, how Christianity makes men less misogynistic, not more, why young men are struggling, and how Christians can reclaim manhood.    Show notes:  Nancy Pearcey discusses why she wanted to write on masculinity, sharing her story of meeting Francis and Edith Schaeffer, converting from agnosticism, and her experience with an abusive father (3:01). She reflects on the history of masculinity, the growth of toxic masculinity during the Industrial Revolution, and why modern women seem to hate men (11:26). Pearcey talks about why she wrote the Toxic War on Masculinity, which delves into the ideas of Christ-like and secular masculinity (19:61). They reflect on the dangers of nominal Christianity, why dedicated evangelical men have the best marriages, but Christian-in-name-only men create the worst marriages (36:44). She says, “nominal Christian men can take the secular script and then sort of baptize it, and the end of actually living worse than secular men.” She provides a multitude of research demonstrating that men becoming evangelical Christians makes them less misogynistic (52:31). She closes by reflecting on the current landscape, how men are falling behind women in all areas, and how true Christians can reclaim masculinity in a healthy way (56:09).    NOTE: We've launched our summer campaign. As a 100-percent donor-supported ministry nonprofit, we rely on believers like you to give toward our calling “to equip the saints for the work of ministry” (Eph. 4:12). This week, historian and teacher Jonathan Wilson returns to the show to discuss Francis Schaeffer's influential documentary series How Should We Then Live? Long before the Benedict Option, Schaeffer offered Christians a grand narrative of societal decline and put forth a call for "Bible Believing" Christians to rescue society from decadence. In 2021, Dr. Wilson wrote a series of blog posts about the series, exploring its historical method and paranoid worldview. He joins us today to explain. Join us for a book-centered conversation with guest Jan Bloom. You'll catch a glimpse of homeschool life in the early years, hear how BooksBloom, their traveling bookstore (a favorite stop at many of the Great Homeschool Conventions) came to be, and even hear a bit about what it's like to homeschool as a grandparent. You'll hear about several favorite books, and come away inspired, with a renewed sense of the joy of homeschooling and the fun of reading good books. Guest biography After hearing about homeschooling at a L'Abri seminar in 1982, Jan and Gary Bloom embarked on a new adventure with their three children. It evolved into a life inextricably intertwined with homeschooling, books, and travel.   Although they didn't necessarily plan for such a mobile lifestyle, Gary and Jan have been on the road for over 20 years with their traveling bookstore, BooksBloom. Though they've slowed down a bit in the last couple of years and are homeschooling their 8 year old grandson, they still travel thousands of miles a year to set up their cozy used bookstore at homeschool conferences and BooksBloom seminars. Families who come to their booth can find both good books and great recommendations for parents and kids who are looking for just the right book on whatever they are interested in, enjoy, or need to study.  Jan writes, “Our lives are full of adventure - traveling, talking, rescuing books, sending great books to new homes,  laughing, and experiencing God's kindness and mercies daily. We are grateful to the Lord that He allows us to live such a crazy life.” Host biography Janice Campbell, a lifelong reader and writer, loves to introduce students to great books and beautiful writing. She holds an English degree from Mary Baldwin College, and is the graduated homeschool mom of four sons. Last week we talked with Carole Joy Seid about Ruth Bell Graham and this week when we hear the story of Edith Schaeffer, we will see some amazing parallels! Edith also grew up in China where her parents were missionaries. When Edith returned to the United States, she met the man she would marry, Francis Schaeffer. Together Edith and Francis started the ministry of L'Abri in Switzerland, a place where people journey to find honest answers to honest questions. Somos Maduros? Edith Schaeffer (1914-2013): Debbie Alnutt is back again with Jasmine to share about another woman that they think you should know about, Edith Schaeffer! Edith was the wife of Christian theologian and philosopher, Francis Schaeffer. Together, they co-founded L'Abri Ministries at their home in Switzerland--a ministry that profoundly impacted European and American youth in the 1950s-1960s. While the Lord used Francis to awaken a generation to the dangers of modern secularism, He used Edith to show broken young people the beauty of Christian living within the setting of family and home life. She authored twenty books including The Tapestry & L'Abri, both based on their life together. We love Edith Schaeffer and we know that you will too!

Both Francis and Edith Schaeffer believed passionately that all human persons are made in the image of God, and thus have a glory inherent in who they are. This conviction impacted everything they taught, including what they taught about how we are to communicate the gospel to people who are not-yet believers in Jesus.  Even more clearly, this conviction of the dignity of all persons impacted the way they treated people, both believers and unbelievers, and it shaped very deeply the manner in which they shared the gospel of Christ with people. You can read the article Jerram mentions in the lecture, A Review of A Review by Francis Schaeffer. Welcome to the Dear Daughters Podcast in 2021! If there is one thing I learned over the last year, it is the importance of stepping back from the news and media to re-engage in a habit of reading spiritual classics. The authors who I’ll be featuring on the podcast have fought the good fight and remained faithful to the end. There’s just so much we can learn from them. I want to invite you to come along with me this season and dive into the wisdom of these faithful followers of Jesus. This next book is oh so lovely. It’s Hidden Art by Edith Schaeffer. Here are a few interesting facts about Edith: Edith Rachel Merritt Schaeffer was born November 3, 1914, and died March 30, 2013. She was a Christian author, wife of Francis Schaeffer, and mother of Frank Schaeffer and three other children. In 1970, Edith and Francis founded L’Abri in Switzerland. L’Abri is a Christian organization that hosts guests worldwide. In the ’60s, L’Abri’s guests included backpackers, hippies, and even celebrities like Timothy Leary and Eric Clapton. Barry Hankins, a professor of history and religion at Baylor University, wrote, “Without L’Abri, Schaeffer would never have drawn the audience that made his many books possible.” He said that without Mrs. Schaeffer, “there would have been no L’Abri.” Hankins described Mrs. Schaeffer like this: “On one hand,” he said, “she held a very traditional, biblical view about women’s subservient role. On the other, she was assertive, even competitive with her husband ... She embodied marriage equality … She would never use the term, of course, but in some ways, she was the model of a sort of evangelical feminism.” I am most enamored by Edith’s idea of hidden art at home. She believed that we were all created by the Creator to be creative, whether that’s gardening or decorating or painting or writing … Don’t you just love that? Edith wrote, “Art in various forms expresses and gives opportunities to others to share in and respond to things which would otherwise remain vague, empty yearnings.” How do you like to create? My hope is that you find ways to both express and share in many forms of art every day. And I pray that you are forever in awe of the Creator. SHOW NOTES Get a copy of Hidden Art by Edith Schaeffer. I remember reading, Tapestry, by Edith Schaeffer, which covered details of her husband's final illness. She commented we would all have heartache and we should prepare for it. I'm thankful for her words because when life knocked me down, I wasn't surprised. However, how should we live and how should we die? My friend, Heather Corhan, chatted with me this week. Unless the Lord heals her, she's dying, but she discussed how to live those final days. Her hope invigorated me, and you'll be blessed.

More than 50 years ago Francis and Edith Schaeffer were led to open their home in Switzerland as a place for folks to retreat to in order to work through issues of life and faith. They named it L’Abri Fellowship. My guest today has served people for 30 years at the Boston branch of L’Abri and has practical suggestions for ways we can be restored as folks consumed in raising the next generation, even if we can’t make our way to Switzerland!

Many times God adds a burden to our lives in order to lighten our load because we run straight to Him. Edith Schaeffer said, “WE CANNOT KNOW WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT OF OUR LIVES. Its arrival won’t be announced with a blast of silver horns or the blare of an orchestra’s full crescendo. Our most important moment can come at a time when no one but God and Satan are aware of it, when our response to the Lord is one which wins at once a battle that could have left a horrible tear or hole in the fabric of history.” Shock, loss, illness, disappointment, criticism and other human attack can turn out to be the most important opportunities in life we are ever going to have to honestly love God and truly trust Him in a way which will bring Him great joy and defeat every plan of Satan. Connie will share her story of God’s presence and provision throughout her life as a preparation for being anchored to Him during her recent opportunity of breast cancer this past year. It is a testimony of the tenderness of our Living God to turn seeming loss into great gain.

You may know Frank Schaeffer for his most recent book, New York Times best seller Why I'm an Atheist Who Believes in God: How to Give Love, Create Beauty and Find Peace or as the subject of the 2016 movie Let Me Be Frank. You may also know him as the heir apparent to influential fundamentalist, evangelical parents Francis and Edith Schaeffer. When Frank was on board with the hellfire and brimstone preaching circuit Jerry Falwell lent his plane to Frank. Listen to find out why Frank got off the plane, so to speak?

If you've have never heard of Frank Schaeffer, you may be surprised to learn that his life has most likely impacted your life and the lives of nearly every American in ways we're just now beginning to grasp. Frank is the son of Evangelical Christian authors Francis and Edith Schaeffer who ran a world famous Christian organization in Switzerland. As Frank got older, both he and his father Francis became prominent figures of the Evangelical world in America, working closely with Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and most importantly helping to start pro-life movement, as recently pointed out by Samantha Bee on her show, Full Frontal. Many who were religiously homeschooled in America in the last 30 years grew up watching Frank's Evangelical Christian movies. From the pro-life propaganda film, Whatever Happened To The Human Race to How Then Shall We Live, a documentary that Michelle Bachmann has often cited as one of her main inspirations. Frank Schaeffer left the Evangelical world years ago and is now an artist and writer. And while the most important aspects of his life involve his grandchildren, his family and his home in Massachusetts, Frank is extremely outspoken about his time in the fundamentalist Evangelical world as evidenced in his memoir Crazy For God and his most recent book, Why I Am An Atheist Who Believes In God. Co-host Dustin Parent and I sat down with Frank a couple of weeks ago to discuss his current advocacy against the Fundamentalist ideals of Donald Trump, America's addiction to certainty and the intrinsic value of Beauty. This is episode is part one of our conversation with Frank.
