But it happened once—in 1835—thanks to President Andrew Jackson. He was the first and only president   When he became president, Jackson was determined to rid the US of its national debt. After all, debt enslaves you to your creditors. Jackson knew that being debt-free was essential to independence. This outlook resonated with many Americans back then. With that in mind, Jackson attacked the institutions and powerful people who promoted and enabled the federal debt. This included the banking elites and the Second Bank of the United States, the country's central bank at the time and precursor to today's insidious Federal Reserve system. Jackson couldn't squeeze the American people with a federal income tax to repay the debt. It didn't exist at the time and would have been unconstitutional. He also couldn't simply print currency to pay off the debt. Perpetuating such an insane fraud—which the Fed does on a massive scale today—likely never entered his mind. Instead, Jackson had to rely on tax revenue from other sources, mainly import tariffs and excise taxes, to pay down the debt. He also drastically cut federal spending and frequently vetoed spending bills. Jackson's determination worked. By January 1835, the US was debt-free for the first time. Unfortunately, it didn't last much more than a year. After that, the US would never again be debt-free—not even close. For the episode #47 of We Belong, we were at the European Parliament to meet the MEP Salima Yenbou. Born in Seine-Saint-Denis, she worked as a school administrator before her election in 2019. MEP Yenbou is one of only 24 eurodeputies who are people of color out of 705 (cf. ENAR). In conversation with MEP Yenbou, we discussed her commitment for representation in Europe, why she decided to become an elected official and her approach to foster equal opportunities in French suburbs.

Opposition to French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura performing at the Paris Olympics is whipped up by the "fachosphère" in France. The former head of the EU Border and Coast Guard joins the far-right and accuses former colleagues of a "project" to encourage migration. Those are just two recent examples of the kinds of prejudice and conspiracy theory that Julie Pascoet confronts at the European Network Against Racism, ENAR. In this episode Julie, who is based in Brussels, talks about poor representation of racialised groups at the only directly elected EU institution, the European Parliament. A recent study commissioned by ENAR shows that the proportion of racialised lawmakers stands at just 3.3 percent since the departure of British members. That compares to an estimated proportion of racialised people in Europe of around 10 percent, says Tina Magazzini of Integrim Lab, which conducted the survey. Tina now expects the percentage at the parliament to sink even lower following EU elections in June. Also in this episode: European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson answers questions about the infiltration of law enforcement by extremist forces, gang violence in Sweden, and police brutality in France — and she encourages much greater diversity in policing. Enar fascineras av att springa riktigt långt. 2022 vann han Roslagens ultra som är 181 km och han har tidigare sprungit Trans Scania 246 km och gjort ett antal svenska 100-mileslopp och 24-timmarstävlingar. Många springer i sandaler för att träna upp fötterna men att springa 200 miles på det sättet? Det är ändå lite ovanligt. NIGHT AIR: SHIFTING SANDS Michaela Büsse – Granular Grammar 22 April 2022 – OT301, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Michaela Büsse's lecture and performative reading unearths how sand has become one of the Netherlands' most important resources and focuses on the country's centuries-long history of land reclamation. She will present clips from her new film that question how an industry that started out as protection against flooding has become serious business. Michaela Büsse is a Research Associate at the Institute of Cultural History and Theory, and Associated Investigator at the excellence cluster ‘Matters of Activity. NIGHT AIR: SHIFTING SANDS Jeff Diamanti – Phosphate Futures: Body, Territory, Mutiny 22 April 2022 – OT301, Amsterdam, The Netherlands In his talk ‘Phosphate Futures: Body, Territory, Mutiny', Jeff Diamanti unfolds the figurative force of elemental phosphorus across four fields on Earth: Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Port of Elizabeth, South Africa; Laâyoune, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic; and the moraine of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Jeff Diamanti is Assistant Professor of Environmental Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. His book ‘Climate and Capital in the Age of Petroleum' (2021) tracks the political and media ecology of fossil fuels across the extractive and logistical spaces that connect remote territories. His new research, Bloom Ecologies, is about phytoplankton, phosphorus, and the spectre of hypoxia. He organises a residency called FieldARTS together with Fred Carter. NIGHT AIR: SHIFTING SANDS Félix Blume – Desierto 22 April 2022 – OT301, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Félix Blume's talk and ‘Desierto' (2021, 24') listening session transported the audience to Altiplano Potosino in central Mexico, a major gold and silver mining hub. Commissioned by ARTE Radio, the piece is filled with recordings from these elevated plains, emphasising that the desert, far from being hostile, is prolific with life. In the audiovisual work and installations of sound artist and engineer Félix Blume, listening emerges as a core tool, a means to encourage the awareness of the imperceptible, and as an act of encounter with others. Blume's artistic practice is often collaborative, working with communities and using public space as a context within which to explore and present work. Intrigued by myths and their contemporary reinterpretations, he hones in on human dialogues with both inhabited natural and urban environments, tuning into what voices can say beyond words. Blume's pieces have been broadcasted by radio stations around the world. A recipient of the Paysage Sonore Prize for the video piece ‘Curupira, Creature of the Wood' (2018), Blume was also presented with the Pierre Schaeffer prize for ‘Los Gritos de México' (2015) at the Phonurgia Nova Awards. He has participated in festivals and exhibitions including LOOP Barcelona, Ex Teresa, Arts Santa Monica, CTM, Thailand Biennale, IFFR, etc. Blume resides between France, Mexico, and Brazil.
