Description: This is a rebroadcast episode that is publishing during the July 4th holiday of 2023. In this episode I am speaking with Fawn Germer, who is the author of Coming Back: How to Win the Job You Want When You've Lost the Job You Need. I have used a lot of concepts from Fawn's book. My favorite is being relevant is more important than your experience. This podcast was originally published in March of 2021. Please read her official Bio: “Fawn Germer is the irreverent, beloved best-selling author of nine books including the Oprah book, Hard Won Wisdom. She has been a keynote speaker for more than 80 Fortune 500 companies and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize four times for her work as an investigative reporter. Fawn's first book was rejected by every major publisher in the United States, but Fawn would not give up until it was the No. 1 nonfiction bestseller that Oprah loved. Her newest book, Coming Back was released by St. Martin's Press in January 2021. The book shows how to turbocharge your career by changing the way you change. Fawn is an inspiring storyteller and life adventurer. She's learned plenty the hard way and is as authentic as they come. She interviewed hundreds of the most accomplished leaders of our times, including famous CEOs, prime ministers, presidents, Nobel Peace Prize winners, scientists, Academy Award winners, and many other trailblazers who revealed that success is born in risk, and power comes from consciously disabling your doubt and self-esteem issues.” This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Fawn Germer started working at newspapers when she was 15 years old. She was in quite the rush, attending journalism school, and then earning her master's degree by the time she was 21 years old. Fawn reflects that her ambitious approach misinformed her management of work-life balance because she didn't have much fun in college. Over the next 20 years, she found great success working for daily newspapers such as The Miami Herald, and Washington Post as an investigative reporter and was a four-time Pulitzer Prize nominee. Fawn once had a boss tell her she wasn't going anywhere. She showed him! “I was looking for a book that would tell me how to be an effective, strong woman in a male-dominated environment and could not find anything. A friend said, you're a journalist, you should write it. I listened and thought I can get to just about anybody. Nobody had asked the strongest women of our times what they had learned the hard way. Very quickly, I got really powerful, famous women into my first book, Hard Won Wisdom. The one point they kept driving home again and again was you've got to take risks. You'll never know your potential; risks are everything. That's how you define your success. I quit my job to write the book.” Oprah held up Fawn's book and called it inspiring. Fawn set out to spread the powerful messages in her book. Her efforts included writing 29 letters to Oprah. It worked. She added professional speaking to the mix and the combination of writing with speaking has given Fawn a life that has been rewarding personally and professionally. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Fawn's journey: Fawn has written nine books, the most recent one, Coming Back: How to Win the Job You Want When You've Lost the Job You Need. Her most recent endeavor is as a podcast host of the Hard Won Wisdom podcast, in which she interviews women who are trailblazers and leaders. More than anything she enjoys communicating through writing and speaking especially when she can have a positive impact on people's lives. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports Podcast… This episode is about expansion. We in the sports industry so often out on our blinders and only think about sports. We tell ourselves it is so different than everything else out there, we are unique. Truth is, in some places we are, in others we are quite typical. A scout, a coach, an athletic trainer -- sure these are careers you only find in sports, but the vast majority of opportunities out there are bound by the same business and economic restrictions as every other industry. Finance, event management, operations, marketing, human resources, public relations, sales, these are all common roles in sports, and in every other industry in the world. So we're taking off the blinders today and speaking with someone, clutch your pearls… outside of sports, GASP! Fawn Germer is a 9-time author, including multiple best sellers and Hard Won Wisdom, which Oprah herself recommends, and even if in sports “Oprah recommends…” doesn't carry as much weight as say “Chris Berman recommends...” it's still pretty amazing. She's also been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in investigative journalism 4 times -- that's dope. Her latest book is titled Coming Back, How to Win the Job You Want, When You've Lost the Job You Need -- is really really good. We're talking actionable career-focused content… right now with Fawn Germer… Questions for Fawn Germer, Best-Selling Author 1: There is a tactical discussion for us to have, the nuts and bolts of how our audience can thrive in the messed-up environment we call modern day life, but there are also broader strategies and mindsets that everyone can and should employ – let's start there. Sound good? I, like you, speak to a lot of entrepreneurs and executives, and one thing that always sticks out to me is their wholehearted belief in themselves and their vision. They see why things can and should work and go after them fearlessly, rather than being consumed and stalled by self-doubt. Why don't more of us embody that attitude? What is it that holds us back? 2: From your myriad of interviews and discussions with industry leaders, presidents, prime ministers – are there certain traits or attributes that stick out to you? And if so, how can the people listening apply these mindsets to their lives? 3: I read in your bio where you said “Life is all about our obstacles. They hold our greatest opportunities for success and growth, but we do have to earn them.” Can you go deeper there – what do you mean by ‘earning your obstacles' and how does that lead to success and growth? 4: Confidence is not a constant. We all have times where we feel indestructible, ready to take on the world, and then things happen, life happens, and we get damaged. Our psyche isn't as impenetrable. Right now, this is a reality for so many people. They had a job, they loved their job, now it's gone. The spiral takes over – they read unemployment numbers, they hear competition is high for jobs, the bills pile up – it's not enough to tell them “this too shall pass” --- what should they focus on to get through these crises of confidence that can weigh them down? 5: In sports we often define coaches one of two ways, they are the tough as nails, hard driving, tough love, in your face type …or they are the player focused coach, they laugh a little more, treat the players as equals, pat them on the back when they fall down type. You teach, you coach, what is your approach to getting through and motivating people to take action? 6: Congratulations on your latest book, COMING BACK: How to Win the Job You Want When You've Lost the Job You Need it's a great read no matter where you are in your career journey. I like to share actionable advice on this show, I want listeners to learn and do things, not just hear me preach in abstract manner.

Earning a living is something that most of us have to do. Many people dream of being their own boss but often stay in a job that they don't love, because they think they have security. Sometimes this works out fine and sometimes that security is ripped out from underneath us. This is why I'm such an advocate of self-employment. My guest today feels the same way. Fawn Germer is a best-selling author and global leadership speaker. She left a job that she thought was very secure and ended up writing her first book. This book earned her an entire file full of rejection letters. She hung in there and not only got published, but the book became an Oprah book. Fawn is the author of nine books including the Oprah book Hard Won Wisdom and her new book Coming Back. She has been a keynote speaker for more than 80 Fortune 500 companies and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize four times for her work as an investigative reporter. She has interviewed some of the most accomplished leaders of our time. We talk about how empowering it is to be in charge of your own future. Fawn feels like self-employment is a gift and her mantra is that self-employment is a privilege that has to be earned. She shares so much wisdom from how to deal with doubts to how to stay relevant. We also learn why you have to commit, why you always need a plan, and so much more. Highlights – [02:27] Fawn's new book called Coming Back came out a week ago. So far, she's done 19 interviews, and it's a really great moment in her life. She's been an author for 20 years and still has it in her. [03:56] Sometimes people become self-employed, because they feel like they don't have any choice. You are in charge. You know your boss. You know you'll get hired. It's empowering to be in charge of your own future. [05:51] Our world has changed so dramatically, that there are things people can do to get income immediately. [06:02] Fawn feels that self-employment is a gift. She came up with the mantra that self-employment is a privilege that needs to be earned. Everyday she would ask what she was doing to move herself toward her goals. [06:53] There is an incredible surge of joy and power in creating your own business and career. [09:26] Self-employed people create their day everyday. Fawn will write down everything she has to accomplish for the week and the day. She also has the freedom to go kayak during the day if she wants. [12:38] To make the leap, it's necessary to have a plan. Have a plan and then understand that things may turn out differently. Judge yourself by who you become when things get tough. [14:38] Fawn quit her job and wrote a book and started getting rejection letter after rejection letter. She has an entire file full of them. She kept going and reformatted her book and eventually it sold. [16:17] She traveled the country and kept writing letters to Oprah. Her first book became an Oprah book. [16:56] Keep moving forward, because your biggest enemy is doubt. [18:33] When you have doubts, realize that no career is a straight shot upwards. The bad times will end. Fawn's strategy is accept, cope, and adapt. [24:04] Fawn shares a great story about not letting security be your dangerous anchor. She quit a more secure job for a new job. The only real security is our belief in ourselves. [27:54] The idea of relevance. When the world changes you need to know it's changing and figure out your place in it. Self-employed people need to see the trends that are coming. [30:20] We need to be insatiable and curious to learn what we need to learn. Always keep learning about the future of your chosen field. [31:47] Read what interests you but also scan the headlines and see what's important to you. [35:49] Understanding the buying patterns of Gen Z will help many businesses future-proof. [37:27] Make up your mind and commit. You're either in or out. You need to be really in it to see success. [38:18] Have a list of goals for each day and week. Fawn always has some type of business plan. She might create a table in Word and write down what she needs to focus on to give herself daily direction. [39:26] Whenever you hit a wall, look at your business plan to see what's not working. Be willing to be honest and know when you need to recalibrate. [40:49] Expect obstacles. Get really good at seeing obstacles. If you don't believe in yourself, no one will believe you. [42:12] You never know how close you are until you turn the corner. Keep going forward a little bit at a time. [42:44] Don't waste money on anything you don't need and always live beneath your means. Make sure what you are doing fits your lifestyle and what you actually want to do. [44:10] Enjoy the roller coaster. [44:26] Fawn tackles the Rapid Round. We learn she always starts her day with a long walk in the woods and more. There are few things in life more stressful than being out of work. Mid- to late-career professionals face an especially difficult challenge. The unemployment rate for older professionals is more than three times the national average. And as this group exits the workforce due to downsizing, COVID-19, or termination, it takes them twice as long as others to get hired, and often for less money than they had been making. The picture for unemployed workers over 50 is not pretty. But rather than blame the market or age discrimination, our guest today says “look in the mirror.” Fawn Germer is the best-selling author of nine books, including her latest, “Coming Back: How to win the job you want when you’ve lost the job you need.” She says many experienced professionals have not kept up with technology, the skills needed today, social media, and the overall pace of change. She says older workers want to come back, but they don’t always know how. She shares her advice with us today. Learn how the Raymond A.
