La todopoderosa industria automotriz alemana atraviesa una seria crisis existencial. Aprieta el acelerador hacia el auto eléctrico pero el mega consumo del litio en las nuevas baterías plantea ya las mismas críticas éticas y ecológicas que se le imputan a los combustibles fósiles que mueven a los motores a explosión. Un reportaje realizado en el marco de la Semana Europea del Desarrollo Sostenible. Dos billones de automóviles circulan hoy en día por todo el mundo. Y poco ha cambiado esencialmente del motor a explosión que los mueve desde que lo inventó en 1886 el ingeniero alemán Nicolaus Otto. Comparado con otros artefactos de la vida moderna, el motor a explosión es hoy una suerte de dinosaurio. Una de las consecuencias más graves de la popularidad del auto a través de estos siglos es su enorme efecto contaminante. El transporte provoca una cuarta parte de las emisiones de CO2 en Europa, el 71 % de ellas provienen del transporte por carretera. El motor a combustión y sus alternativas más o menos eficientes Para alcanzar las metas europeas, de aquí a 2050 habría que disminuir un vertiginoso 90% de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero provocadas por el transporte. Y Alemania debería ser el gran responsable de esta tarea: es el principal exportador mundial de automóviles, tiene un 20% del mercado mundial y vende el sueño del auto perfecto. Es el país de los Mercedes Benz, de los BMW, de los Porsche, de Volkswagen, Opel y Audi. Lo insostenible del motor a combustión lo sabía hace mucho tiempo, pero se la ha hecho fácil. “Soñaron durante demasiado tiempo con el diésel o con los híbridos, que con el escándalo del Dieselgate terminó en un desastre”, explica Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, profesor de economía automotriz, director del CAR-Center Automotive Research. “No se tomó en serio la electro movilidad en el pasado, , no se creyó en los autos eléctricos en el pasado y desde hace tres, cuatro, cinco años no se ocuparon de las baterías y se mantuvieron en un ya viejo modelo de negocios”, prosigue. El motor a combustión no sólo es contaminante, también es ineficiente. Para sustituir al motor a combustión se han presentado muchos candidatos, estima Koshan Mahdi, profesor de movilidad en la Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas de Berlín: “Es ineficiente porque quema el combustible y genera un montón de calor con este quemar y la mitad de la energía se va vaporizando, difundiendo en el ambiente, y sólo la mitad se usa para la movilidad”. “Técnicamente hay muchas alternativas. Se ven algunas en las calles, pero si quiero la mejor alternativa, entonces tiene que ser más eficiente, más económico, más sostenible”, añade Mahdi, subrayando que opciones como el nitrógeno o los combustibles sintéticos no son deseables. El motor eléctrico parece haberse impuesto definitivamente en una lucha extenuante por el futuro de la movilidad entre infinidad de alternativas. Pero el auto eléctrico no es por sí mismo una solución como lo demuestra el ejemplo de los nada pequeñas SUV, la curiosa nueva moda de los autos grandes. Según el profesor, con uno de estos autos de una cierta marca, “viajando de Berlín a Múnich se consume la electricidad que una familia de cuatro personas consume en un mes entero. Ida y vuelta son dos meses de energía para una familia. Ahora, con la crisis que tenemos en el mundo por la guerra de Rusia, la gente se da cuenta de ahorrar energía, la energía es cara”. El litio, un beneficio engañoso cuya extracción provoca “enormes daños ambientales” La batería más eficiente para autos eléctricos hasta ahora es la de litio, que además usa otros varios componentes bastante exóticos, escasos y caros como el cobalto. El litio es el principal componente de las nuevas baterías y representa un 30 % del total del peso de una batería de automóvil normal. Pero reemplazar petróleo por baterías eléctricas no deja de ser un beneficio engañoso: “El proceso de producción del auto tiene que ser también sostenible, no sólo el uso cotidiano. Significa, usando energías renovables, usar lo menos posible recursos naturales, usar materiales reciclados, quitar todo el litio de la tierra, como hicimos con el petróleo antes, no parece tan sostenible. Hay un billón de autos en el planeta, 80 millones produciendo cada año. Creo que hay bastante litio todavía, pero estamos entrando en un nuevo círculo de excavar todo lo que podemos al precio que nadie quiere pagar. No va a salir sostenible de ninguna manera, creo”, opina Mahdi. El litio, un mineral que existe principalmente en Chile y Bolivia. Los gobiernos sudamericanos están bajo la enorme presión de las ofertas de los productores mundiales de baterías y automóviles para aumentar en todo lo posible la extracción de litio. Pero ya en Alemania crecen las voces que muestran lo cínico que es promover un automóvil ecológico en Europa con enormes costos ambientales que deben enfrentar los países que lo producen. “Si se quieren ver los daños ecológicos, pues hay que ir al Desierto de Atacama en Chile. Una de esas plantas tiene 44 kilómetros cuadrados de extensión. Todos los días esa planta extrae 120 millones de litros de aguas subterráneas para empujar al litio a la superficie. ¿Y sabe qué pasa con esa agua? Pues estamos en el desierto... ¡Simplemente se evapora, desaparece! Es decir que esta empresa saca 120 millones de litros de aguas subterráneas todos los días para extraer litio, para que nosotros aquí digamos ‘¡Ey, yo conduzco un auto eléctrico!'. Estamos provocando enormes daños ambientales y con esta nueva moda eléctrica se pondrá muy difícil”, lamentaHarald Lesch, de la Universidad de Múnich. El esquema parece ser el de importar los beneficios y mantener lejos los costos: “Antes traíamos el petróleo de algún lado y ‘aceptábamos' entre comillas los daños al medio ambiente que provocábamos allá y ahora pasa lo mismo con el litio. Me da la impresión que cuando le preguntamos a los industriales de dónde sacan sus materias primas ellos dicen ‘alguien nos las manda'. En el fondo no queremos saber aquí en Europa o en Estados Unidos los daños ambientales que provocamos en otros países”, agrega Lesch. Moverse de manera “más inteligente”: hacia menos autos privados Poco a poco y pensado ya a largo plazo parece estar imponiéndose la idea que en un futuro próximo poseer un automóvil privado será innecesario. Sería seguramente la única salida sostenible de la difícil movilidad moderna. “No es sabio reemplazar todo lo que tenemos ahora con otro motor. Es mejor pensar en la forma en cómo nos movemos”, argumenta Koshan Mahdi, dando como ejemplo el alquiler de auto en el instante, el uso de taxis compartidos, de transporte público, de patines o bicicletas eléctricos o de carga. “Hoy se está desarrollando una gran variedad de métodos de movilidad y creo que con esta mezcla se puede moverse más inteligente y más eficiente que con un auto”, recalca. Berlín no es una ciudad especialmente ecológica, pero el gran desarrollo de su transporte público ha hecho que sólo la mitad de su población tenga un auto privado: “En Berlín tenemos un transporte público muy desarrollado, da igual por donde quieres ir, hay un tranvía, hay metro, hay de todo, y las 24 horas”, comenta Felipe Smith, que vive en la capital alemana y tiene dos hijos pequeños. “La situación de la infraestructura pública está perfecta. El transporte público también. Hay un montón de proveedores donde se puede alquilar un auto con una aplicación, también los patines, bicicletas…”, subraya asimismo Smith. El 75 % del espacio público de las ciudades modernas, todo el espacio que no son comercios o viviendas, lo ocupan los automóviles, o bien moviéndose por la ciudad o estacionados. En el mínimo 25 % restante están arrinconados los peatones en estrechas veredas, en plazas o parques. Paradójicamente, en Alemania, un automóvil está un promedio de 23 horas al día inmóvil.
