Chris and I have been having musical soulversations for close to two decades. An accomplished film composer, conductor and musician based in LA, he has worked with Michael Bublé, Dr. Dre, Christina Aguilera and many others. More importantly, he has a deep and profound understanding and approach to the art and practice of creating music. We went through David Darling's Music for People apprenticeship together and share a similar love and passion for the art of improvisation. We dive into the first time he heard Dark Wood one of David's poignant solo cello albums that helped him begin to look at the art of music making from a more profound and simple approach - what David often called Deep Listening - or playing from INSIDE the music, i.e., allowing the music to be birthed from this incredibly intimate, innocent and vulnerable place we all have within. Join us for this deep dive into what "Being In The Music" means to us and how David's legacy lives on a year after he transitioned to the other side of things. Here is a bit more about Chris: As a conductor and orchestrator, Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli has worked with top recording artists Michael Bublé, Dr. Dre, Christina Aguilera, and She & Him, among others. He is also an Emmy-nominated composer whose latest classical work, Continent's End, is available on the Delos Music label. His music can be found on the web at posthornmusic.com. Episode 172 - Marco Pavé. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Marco Pavé. Since 2013, Memphis Hip-Hop artist Marco Pavé has forged a twin identity as a champion of independent Southern Hip-Hop and as an educator and arts advocate working to stimulate community activism and entrepreneurship through the lens of hip hop music and culture. On October 30, Pavé will release Crossroads EP through his independent label Radio Rahim Music. To mark the release, he'll deliver a virtual performance and host Soundtrack for Life: An evening for Sync Licensing, Music Supervision, & Film Composing in DC at Georgetown. Crossroads EP solidifies Pavé's place in the league of rappers like Big K.R.I.T. and Isaiah Rashad who synthesize the sprawling and iconic Southern Hip-Hop tradition. Every Southern city has its own distinctive hip hop flavor that has evolved out of its local history, culture, scenes, and slang, as well as the way it incorporated hip hop with blues, soul, funk, and other styles. Defined by Pavé's uncompromising blend of Tennessee grit, swagger, and substance, which lands somewhere between Kendrick Lamar and Memphis legend Project Pat, Crossroads should appeal to any true Southern rap aficionado. Born and raised in North Memphis, Pave started rapping seriously to articulate the dangerous day-to-day realities of his neighborhood. It took a few years for Pavé to align with his sense of purpose. He continued to rap and attend open mics as he graduated from high school and entered the workforce in Memphis, a global logistics hub with a huge working-class population. He soon felt his life choices constrained by adult responsibilities, and he felt a dire need to branch away from paths that people told him were “safe.” An “observer by nature,” Pavé began to take both music and activism more seriously as he watched his city rapidly gentrify, conducted Independent research on social inequality, and reeled after the killing of Trayvon Martin. His upbringing as a Muslim in the inner-city Bible belt means that he has been going against the grain his entire life. “I'm coming from a family that is all about radicalism and black power,” he says. “Activism is in my blood.” Pavé has built an unprecedented career that uses Hip-Hop culture not only as a means of personal expression, but also as an educational tool designed to make an impact on both individuals and systems of power. “My mission is to spread the lesson of creativity, spread the lesson of believing in yourself,” Pavé says. “But in the midst of taking care of yourself, I want people to think about how their story can be told without trying to get to a destination.” Website: https://www.kingofmarco.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Kingofmarco/ Note: Guests create their own bio description for each episode. Back in 2016, John Carpenter and his band embarked on a world tour, performing all the classic cuts from his movie soundtracks as well as a selection of songs from his two Lost Themes albums. Sadly, Chris and Nick missed all of those shows, but the John Carpenter Live Retrospective Blu-Ray from Storm King Productions is as close as we could get to actually being there. For our first episode of 2021, we take a look at this one-of-a-kind concert film, a must-have for fans of John Carpenter's composing and a rare glimpse of John Carpenter, unlikely rock star (for better and, certainly, for worse, this ain't no Coupe De Villes!). Along with our thoughts on that, we also get into the filmographies of two other masters of horror whose careers paralleled Carpenter's in some surprising ways -- and dream up an idea for a concert tour that NEEDS to happen when we can all go see live music again!

Track-by-track, Chris and Nick break down the album of all-original Carpenter music (none of which has been heard in his, or anyone else's, films), and it's a must-listen for those who love his iconic scoring work on movies such as Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13. We also recap some of our quarantine film viewing and discuss some of our favorite film composers of this generation -- many of whom have some distinctive John Carpenter influences of their own. Rarely is there an episode of TV where I don’t use a track from The Raid if I’m working with a fight scene or a suspense sequence. It’s MONEY. In this interview Joe and I break down his path from a kid in New Jersey to moving out to Los Angeles and how he climbed from nowhere to the top of his profession in record time. If you have ever wondered how composers approach their work, or more importantly if you’re an editor like me and you want to know some cool tips for working with composers, this is an incredibly useful and insightful interview. As a composer, arranger, and producer for movie, television, theater, and video game music, he has collaborated with a number of mainstream musical acts. His first major break came in 2010 when he worked with Daft Punk on the sweeping digital soundtrack to Disney's “Tron” reboot/sequel. That same year, he helped with arrangements on a handful of tracks for M83's breakthrough hit “Hurry Up, We're Dreaming,” which led to the pair's collaboration on the 2013 Tom Cruise scifi epic “Oblivion”. For 2017’s “The Greatest Showman,” Trapanese worked alongside Pasek & Paul and John Debney, producing songs and co composing the score. Notable solo scores include “Only The Brave” (2017), the landmark rap biopic “Straight Outta Compton” (2015), the second and third installments of the “Divergent” series, “Insurgent” (2015) and “Allegiant” (2016); “Earth to Echo” (2014); USA’s “Unsolved” (2018); Amazon’s “JeanClaude Van Johnson” (2017); ABC’s “Quantico” (201617) Freeform’s “Dead of Summer” (2016); EA’s video game “Need for Speed Payback” (2017); and Ubisoft’s video game “The Crew” (2014). In the studio and in concert, in addition to Daft Punk, M83, and Mike Shinoda, he has worked with Dr. Dre, Dierks Bentley, Zedd, Kelly Clarkson, Mike Shinoda, Kendrick Lamar, Moby, Aloe Blacc, Alessia Cara, Haim, The Glitch Mob, Active Child, Halsey, Sohn, John Newman, Dia Frampton, 3OH!3, Steven Price, and James Newton Howard. Born in New Jersey, Trapanese earned his B.A. in classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music. He went on to study at UCLA for his M.A. in music for visual media and taught electronic music composition at the school from 20082011. In 2016, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is a founding member of The Echo Society. Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared and published by Elyse Rintelman. The original music in the opening and closing of the show is courtesy of Joe Trapanese (who is quite possibly one of the most talented composers on the face of the planet). Breaking Into...  -- In this episode Black Hollywood Live host James Lott Jr. interviews Composer Kurt Farquhar. Born in Illinois, the youngest of five children, Kurt's musical education took him from the streets of Chicago to the Music Conservatories of France. By the age of twelve he had already written his first symphonic work. Today, Kurt Farquhar is a four-time BMI award winner for most performed music on prime-time television. For over two decades Kurt has been one of the most dominant composers in television music (King of Queens, The Game, Lincoln Heights, Girlfriends, Sister Sister, Soul Food, The Parkers, South Central, The Proud Family, and many others). Some of Kurt's film credits include "Not Easily Broken", "Cover", "Lifted", and the soon to be released "96 Minutes". Kurt Farquhar is also the founder and CEO of True Music, a highly respected music licensing catalog based in Pasadena, CA.

A common request from directors is to provide mood-setting music that doesn't call attention to itself. One of the best ways to do this is with long, held tones. Making these drone tracks can be quick and easy, but there's also an art to getting just the right emotional flavor. In this episode I share some of my drone variations for the film Twin Cities. This production lesson originally aired in Composer Quest episode 153, my roundtable discussion with the creative team behind the film Twin Cities. If you’re a songwriter or composer, you may have been approached by a filmmaker who wants to use your music in his or her film. After the initial burst of excitement, a few practical questions should be going through your head: What should I charge? Who will own the music? Will I be able to collect royalties? Should I ask for a chunk of the film’s profits? Should I write the contract myself or hire a lawyer? These are just a few of the topics covered in this special summer episode of Composer Quest, featuring a talk by entertainment lawyers Ken Abdo and Dan Satorius. Thanks to the Minnesota Music Coalition and McNally Smith for hosting this talk at the 2014 MN Music Summit. I highly recommend listening if you’re a songwriter or composer, so you can make the most out of getting your music placed in a film and avoid getting stuck with a crappy contract.

Composer Quest: A Songwriting and Music Composition Podcast

In this special summer episode of Composer Quest, composer Adam Conrad shares a ton of great insights about how music works in film. He also explains why he transitioned from using MIDI mockups to writing everything by hand, for real musicians.
