This week, and next week, I am joined by my old friend Larry Long Jr, Director of Collegiate Sales at Teamworks and Founder of The Midweek Midday Motivational Minute. I am enthralled with Larry’s energy! He might actually have more energy than me. Is that even possible? Other than high energy, we have a lot in common. I have been pushing people to do better and do more. Larry gave us a lot of words of wisdom in the two episodes he recorded with me. Larry like people that like what they do and are passionate about doing it. Work on whatever day is today. What every day starts with “Y”. I streak starts with one. Just get started! Be a go getter and go giver! We are reminded that we are all in sales. Even as a dad as Larry tells us. Be a match maker rather than a sales person. Match things together. A need and your product or service. Ask questions and listen, then figure out how to make a match. Sometimes there is not a match, but it is. your job to help a prospect find what they need. Be genuine and caring. You never know, it might turn into referrals. The difference between contacts and contracts is the letter “R”….Relationships. Build brand equity and brand awareness. It helps nurture business. Go out and plant relationship seeds. I jump in and talk about learning what makes people successful rather than wondering and being jealous of people that have more than you. Larry said that success leave clues. Look to do things that make you feel fulfilled. Do not do things that make you angry and grumpy. Do what makes you happen. It is not always about the money. It is important to learn from other people’s success and mistakes. It will help you grow faster. Later, we shifted gears to talk about leadership, but I only teased it in this episode. Make sure to tune in next week for Larry’s thoughts on leadership and more! Find Larry on LinkedIn and make sure to mention my show! Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
Read the complete transcript on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. LARRY’S FINAL TIP TO EMERGING SALES LEADERS: “Create your own way of keeping score. If all you’re thinking about is hitting quota, if all you’re thinking about is hitting your month, hitting your year, hitting your quarter, hitting whatever those goals are, you’ll have those days where it’s very challenging to find success versus if you say, “There are different things beyond just making the sale.” There’s the showing up at the time that you said you were going to show up, remaining focused for the amount of time that you said you were going to remain focused on this task, and making the outbound activity that’s necessary, for example.” Today’s show was recorded in Ann Arbor, Michigan where Thomson Reuters is based. This is the second of two interviews we’ve done with Thomson Reuters sales leaders. Larry Goeckner is a Sales Director at Thompson Reuters, where he’s been his entire career. Find Larry on LinkedIn!
I’m honored to bring you the thinking of New York Times best-selling author Dr. Larry Dossey, on issues he has championed for nearly 40 years. Larry and I will be discussing a range of topics, such as the nature of consciousness, our inherent connectivity and unity with all other life, and the role suffering plays in helping us elaborate and expand our worldview. His long career as a physician, researcher, writer and public speaker has given him deep insights into these topics that you won’t want to miss. It’s remarkable how consistently and passionately Larry has been the champion for the idea of a collective, unitary consciousness in the face of an initially skeptical scientific community. The following is just a taste of Larry’s thought-provoking insights. Q: How do we access the One Mind? Larry: You really don’t have to do anything to access the One Mind, if you just turn off your rational mind. Q: How can suffering help us in our journey toward greater wholeness? Larry: Ernest Hemingway said, “Life breaks everyone. Some people grow stronger at the break points. Other people just continue to be broken.” In my own life, I grew stronger at the break points, and probably without some sort of suffering, some sort of dramatic breakage, I would not have made the transitions in my own life and thinking that I did. Q: Have we progressed as a society in our understanding and acceptance of the One Mind? Larry: Absolutely. About three-quarters of the medical schools in the United States now have courses in their curriculum on the impact of healing intentions and consciousness-mediated healing. Q: What has the One Mind been called in various spiritual traditions? Larry: You can trace it back 3,000 years to the Hindu tradition, where it was known as the Akashic records. In Zen, it’s called Satori. In the tradition of Yoga, it’s called Somati. In Sufism it’s known as Fanaa. And in Christianity it’s often referred to as Christ Consciousness. When asked if there’s one last thing he’d like our listeners to hear, Larry says, “Don’t be so serious about the nature of consciousness and what the future holds. Simply allow your unconscious wisdom to bubble up and you’ll be happier, more creative and healthier.” Dr. Larry Dossey’s latest book, One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters, provides compelling data for the existence and power of a collective consciousness. It stretches us to re-imagine the power of our true selves. About Dr. Larry DosseyThe author of numerous best-selling books and articles, distinguished physician Dr. Larry Dossey has become an internationally influential advocate of the role of the mind in health and the role of spirituality in healthcare. The impact of his work has been remarkable. Before his book Healing Words was published in 1993, only three U.S. medical schools had courses devoted to exploring the role of spirituality in health; currently, nearly 80 medical schools have instituted such courses, many of which utilize Dr. Dossey's works as textbooks. In his 1989 book Recovering the Soul, he introduced the concept of "nonlocal mind" -- mind unconfined to the brain and body, mind spread infinitely throughout space and time. Since then, "nonlocal mind" has been adopted by many leading scientists as an emerging image of consciousness. Dr. Dossey's ever-deepening explication of nonlocal mind provides a legitimate foundation for the merging of spirit and medicine. The ramifications of such a union are radical and call for no less than the reinvention of medicine...and the way each of us thinks about ourself. Larry Gaier is a personal trainer who was standout intern at Active Life HQ (when there was an Active Life HQ). He is the best communicator on staff at Active Life and his intensity of capacity for empathy is the reason why he gets assigned the clients he does. In this episode, Dr. Sean and Active Life 1 on 1 staff member, Larry Gaier discuss a client who had some physical pain that was extremely fear based. If you have ever heard “it’s in your head” and thought that this suggestion was offensive, you need to listen to this episode. Any time that a coach tells a client or a doctor tells a patient “it’s in your head” when you know you can feel it in your body, it’s frustrating to hear. In this episode we talk about how they’re directly related, and how it should be communicated. Minute Breakdown: 0-10 - There was more fear than pain. 11-20 - When you change your physiology you will change your habits. 21-30 - What is an athlete? 31-40 - Communication is the key. 41-50 - Setting boundaries with your coach or client. Welcome back to The Brian Nichols Show! As always, my goal is to educate, enlighten, and inform, and today is no different, as I am once again joined by the one and only, Larry Sharpe! Larry should be a stranger to none of you, as he was easily the most notable Libertarian candidate seeking elected office in 2018, as he ran on the Libertarian Party ticket in my home state of New York, garnering both national attention and a fantastic base of libertarians along the way. Larry returns to the show to discuss the outcome of his 2018 run, what he learned along the way, and digs into the reason Larry is still out talking to voters across New York State (and other states) as a part of his "#FullSharpe" campaign. Later, we discuss his new media empire, "Sharpe Way Media", and his new radio show, "The Sharpe Way". And finally, Larry gives his take on the tribalism America is currently facing and his predictions for 2020 and beyond. Sellers have a bad reputation as people who are artificial and only concerned about themselves, but in order to succeed, you must focus on selling from the heart. Larry Levine has spent 30-something years in the trenches of B2B work, and he recognized some glaring weaknesses in sales teams he worked with. He values authenticity and he points to it as a big disconnect for many sellers. But it isn't just sellers. Think about how many times you've run into a friend you haven't seen in a while, and you toss out the phrase, "we should do lunch." It doesn't usually mean anything other than "I'll see you when I see you." Sellers must pay attention to their words. Use your words The words genuine, authentic, value, and trusted advisor prompt the follow-on question: "What does that mean?" Start by leading an authentic lifestyle. Think about this: When you say you're a salesperson or an SDR, you're already behind the 8-ball already in the minds of your clients and prospects. For every great sales professional, there are 10 that give the sales world a bad name. When you deal with the people in your personal life, are you genuine and true to who you really are? Most likely you are. So why can't we play that same role when we're dealing with our clients and prospects. [Tweet "Address the misalignment that exists between who you are at work and who you are after 5 p.m. Be genuine and authentic with the people in your business just like you are in your personal life. #AuthenticSelling"] Building relationships Many sellers maintain a certain amount of distance in their relationships with their clients. In his book, Slow Down, Sell Faster, Kevin Davis asked how it's possible to sell something to someone if you don't spend time figuring out who they are? What makes that person tick? What do they care about? Sellers try to move their prospects through the sales funnel as quickly as possible instead of investing the time to understand. Listen with intent and help them do their jobs. You'll be surprised to find that things actually speed up. Vulnerability If you don't build a relationship throughout multiple steps and influencers, it will be difficult to sell anything. People will buy from people they know, like, and trust. People are beginning to understand that it's ok to bring your heart to the sales world. It's ok to be genuine and real. But in order to do that, you have to be vulnerable, which goes against what we believe about sellers. If you asked your prospects what they truly desire in a seller, what do you think they'll say? Maybe someone who is honest and who can solve their problems. At some point, you'll hear them say "I want them to be sincere and show up after the sale." Conversations Have a conversation like you would with your friends. Memorizing scripts may make you sound too robotic. It isn't that scripts are bad, but we must make the verbiage in the script our own. If you can't align to it, you'll struggle with it. Imagine if you understood the person you were reaching out to. What are the issues and challenges they are facing. If you're calling a VP of sales to set up a demo for software, find out the issues that VPs of sales struggle with. Offer three issues that are most common for sales teams. Ask your prospects which of those three topics he can most closely align with. The truth is that even tenured sales reps are going about this the wrong way. Instead of the phone call being focused on setting a meeting, focus the call on starting a conversation. Sales leaders Time and patience matter. Your organization wasn't built in a day. You took a series of small successful steps to get where you are. The same is true for your sales process, but no one has time or patience for it. No one wants to slow down. Larry recalls deciding one day to focus on quality over quantity. He focused on opening at least two new conversations with two people he didn't know every single day. His phone skills improved and his mindset did, too. Sellers who are allowed to focus on quality over quantity may find that they enjoy their roles a bit more because they are connecting with people. Foundations Larry's first mentor freed him from the pressure of memorizing his prospecting script word-for-word, and instead encouraged him to understand the foundation of the script. Once you've done that, make it your own. Get back to humanizing what we've previously dehumanized in the sales world. There's a time and place for technology, but human-to-human matters. Technology can't replace every human aspect. Larry warns against being an "empty suit with commission breath." Once leadership realizes that there's a human on the other end of the sale rather than just a bunch of dollars and they set out to solve problems, watch what happens to the level of your relationships and referrals and profits. Avoiding sameness In a crowded field, in order to rise above the sea of sameness and be seen in a different light and stand out from the sales wolfpack, the differentiating moment goes back to the human aspect. People smell sincerity immediately. Instead of juggling personalities, be authentic. Understand that credibility and clarity sell in a world of insincerity. [Tweet "In a commoditized market, if you open conversations in a transactional way, expect a transactional relationship. You'll be replaced by another transactional relationship along the way. #SalesConversations"] Create a transformational experience by having a conversation. As you transform your relationships, you'll stick out like a sore thumb in a world of transactional conversations. His Dad was an orphan so growing up he and his siblings visited the orphanage often to help out. Giving back mentality and the idea of serving others was ingrained in him. Senior project in High School was to open an orphanage, which didn’t happen all the way but started and post-high school became International Network of Hearts. INH began as mostly awareness campaigns. As they connected with the kids they found out the need was so great that they decided to open their first home six years ago in Rosarito, Mexico which was for girls who were victims of human trafficking. Now eight months ago they opened one for boys who are victims. On the Real Estate side, he had a great professor in college who served as a mentor and got him started. [5:30] minute: It sounds like International Network of Hearts is a realization of a life-long dream for you then? Joined a Mastermind called Thrive a couple years back, and that was his real start in Entrepreneurship. Learned about For Purpose businesses and that helped him put giving at the forefront. [7:10] minute: How did you first get International Network of Hearts off the ground, where did you start? Education and awareness was first, in San Diego. Severity of the issue is much higher than most realize. Got their first home through a program in Mexico where seized homes from the drug cartels are repurposed years later as affordable property for non-profits like an orphanage. Got kicked out of their first home after it was won back by former owner. [9:34] minute: How old are the children in these homes? Youngest is 4 and oldest is 18. Have received kids as young as 2 in the past. [10:00] minute: How are you getting connected to this children, how do they end up with your organization? Built good relationships with local law enforcement, district attorney in San Diego and Tijuana where they are based. Hotline for people to make reports, which in some areas is more preferred than working through local law enforcement. From Child Protective Services and non-profits that are doing similar things to help these kids in need. [14:00] minute: How has the success you’ve had in your career as an entrepreneur fed your ability to do this work that you are doing with International Network of Hearts? Funding was always so hard in the first few years, but things took off once he began looking at ways to leverage his entrepreneurial career to impact the organization. Started a real estate business and opened a nutrition store, both of which give substantial portions of their income to International Network of Hearts. Mastermind group and community was a massive boost for him. Now working on the level of thinking about taking their program and being able to scale it on a more global platform. [18:40] minute: Tell me more about this idea of investing in yourself, investing in your own growth, how does that fit into your life as an entrepreneur and your life as a human being? First time he invested in himself was the Thrive...
