In Episode 001, we share our vision behind “For Purpose & Profit” — why exactly we believe it’s time for the relationship between purpose and profit to revolutionize. In today’s world, there is a strict divide between companies and organizations that are “for purpose” and those that are “for profit”. We’ve come to accept that these two objectives are separate and cannot coexist. We’re either for meaning or money. It’s one or the other. We’re here to tell you that you, in fact, can — and must — be for both. Without purpose, there is no real, lasting contribution to the world. Without profit, impact will be crippled and held at the mercy of large, often corrupt, corporations. Together, we — social entrepreneurs — will unite purpose and profit for the betterment of all humanity and the rest of the natural world.

His Dad was an orphan so growing up he and his siblings visited the orphanage often to help out. Giving back mentality and the idea of serving others was ingrained in him. Senior project in High School was to open an orphanage, which didn’t happen all the way but started and post-high school became International Network of Hearts. INH began as mostly awareness campaigns. As they connected with the kids they found out the need was so great that they decided to open their first home six years ago in Rosarito, Mexico which was for girls who were victims of human trafficking. Now eight months ago they opened one for boys who are victims. On the Real Estate side, he had a great professor in college who served as a mentor and got him started. [5:30] minute: It sounds like International Network of Hearts is a realization of a life-long dream for you then? Joined a Mastermind called Thrive a couple years back, and that was his real start in Entrepreneurship. Learned about For Purpose businesses and that helped him put giving at the forefront. [7:10] minute: How did you first get International Network of Hearts off the ground, where did you start? Education and awareness was first, in San Diego. Severity of the issue is much higher than most realize. Got their first home through a program in Mexico where seized homes from the drug cartels are repurposed years later as affordable property for non-profits like an orphanage. Got kicked out of their first home after it was won back by former owner. [9:34] minute: How old are the children in these homes? Youngest is 4 and oldest is 18. Have received kids as young as 2 in the past. [10:00] minute: How are you getting connected to this children, how do they end up with your organization? Built good relationships with local law enforcement, district attorney in San Diego and Tijuana where they are based. Hotline for people to make reports, which in some areas is more preferred than working through local law enforcement. From Child Protective Services and non-profits that are doing similar things to help these kids in need. [14:00] minute: How has the success you’ve had in your career as an entrepreneur fed your ability to do this work that you are doing with International Network of Hearts? Funding was always so hard in the first few years, but things took off once he began looking at ways to leverage his entrepreneurial career to impact the organization. Started a real estate business and opened a nutrition store, both of which give substantial portions of their income to International Network of Hearts. Mastermind group and community was a massive boost for him. Now working on the level of thinking about taking their program and being able to scale it on a more global platform. [18:40] minute: Tell me more about this idea of investing in yourself, investing in your own growth, how does that fit into your life as an entrepreneur and your life as a human being? Thank you for an incredible 5 days of non-stop learning, growing and building our futures together. I came in with no agenda and a blank slate, leaving full of brotherly love, several new business deals in the works, and feeling stronger than ever in myself, my ability for future success and I attribute it all to building stronger relationships with all my BDB Bro’s. Can’t wait for BDB Elite 2.0 to start and get back to San Diego.”-Dominic Wood “Day 1 after BDB Live 2.0 and I refuse to let myself fall back into mediocrity. Are you with me? I received a ton of value from Alex Charfen and tonight I'm focusing on his concept of momentum, both creating and maintaining it. Step 1: lower the pressure and noise in your life - identify the habits you have adopted and the situations you continue to put yourself into that stall you out and constrain you. For instance, I JUST uninstalled a mobile gaming app that I allowed into my life that was providing me very short term gains in exchange for the loss of long term success. It was fairly distressing to uninstall the stupid game, strangely enough, but I'll take that resistance as a good sign. (Learning to lean into resistance is also another new focus of mine.) My next step: identifying more pressure and noise and systematically eliminating as much as possible. Can you think of anything you do or are hooked on that feels like an escape or a waste of time? Did anything immediately come to mind when you heard him describe pressure and noise in his presentation? If momentum isn't on your mind, what else did you learn this weekend that you've already taken action on?” - Matteo Echabarne “My first BDB live event, I'm blown away at the culture and environment. Grateful to you all, the men young and older, for embracing me, and being excellent in your ways.I longed for a group like this. So many of you have become dear to my heart already and we just met... only God can do that. I know I have brothers I can count on. Congratulations to you Nicholas and Amanda and your team, the event was outstanding, the lineup of speakers were great and beyond, (only one was a bit off color for me) I look forward to many more and contributing to the growth of the amazing community.” - Jose DiCervo Resources: Email nicholasbayerle@thebilliondollarbody.com for BDB Live Replays! Dean S. Hawkins is a highly decorated Fire Officer & Trainer based in Cairns, Far North Queensland and is the author of the highly successful book Fight Fire with Fire – How to use firefighting techniques to find your purpose, overcome all obstacles and reach your goals. What can a Fire Officer and Trainer teach Small Business Owners about making more? Fire fighting and running a small business are very similar. You need to OUTWORK your doubts, OUTWORK your hesitations and OUTWORK your fears. These three things are your barriers to success, regardless of what you’re doing. When you’re learning to be a fire fighter there’s early starts and late finishes. Does this sound familiar to owning a small business? It’s about doing what is required to be successful. Success is all about preparation. In fire fighting you mitigate what could go wrong, and you take all the necessary training and precautions. You do the same in small business. “The heavy lifting is done prior to the event”. Only after you’ve done all the hard work, can you enjoy the rewards of your efforts, not beforehand. This is what separates people with a wish list and people with a want list. You’ve got to want it. Yoda: - Do, or do not, there is no try. When people say they will TRY it’s already a sign of giving up. When people say they will ‘try and attend an event’, you already know it means they won’t be there. This applies to all areas of life. Take the first few steps If you want to do something, prepare the night before. If you want to go walking get your shoes out and your clothes ready before you go to sleep. By having them ready you’ve got more chance of you doing it. If you actually put your shoes and walking gear on, Dean dares you not to walk. This applies to business: If you say you will TRY and increase profits by 20% it won’t happen. You either will or you won’t, there is no try. Saying I WILL automatically makes you think of all the processes that must happen for this to be a reality. Belief in what you do Personal trainers, Health Practitioners, Fire Fighters, you forfeit the right to not look after yourself. It’s your responsibility. When you wear your trade you take pride in what you do, but it’s not just a visual thing, it’s also how you perform each day. Do you perform to the highest level, or cut corners? Create a Contract for Success by asking yourself: Will you get up earlier to make it happen? Will you go to bed late to make it happen? Will you connect with all the authorities in your space? Will you read as much as you can, and get all the qualifications necessary? Will you stay on that commitment for the necessary amount of time required to make it a reality? Will you pour yourself completely into it for at least 90 days? You can do anything for 90-Days It’s not sustainable to pour yourself into something with a break, but you can do anything for 90-days, which is how long it took Dean to write his book. It’s a similar principle used in the book The 12-Week Year (4 x 90 day periods). Dean admits he’s never had a natural flare for anything, but he’s done well because he can’t be outworked. Working Less is Working Smart We spoke about earning more, now lets talk about working less. It sounds like a contradiction but it’s not, it’s about being smart Stick to a formula that works, but be prepared to make adjustments along the way and be open to new ideas. The more you get in the habit of following a good structure, the easier it is to repeat and get ongoing positive results. It’s like a Standard Operating Procedure. You need to learn to focus on what’s important today. When Dean was faced with a house fire that was the most important thing at that given moment, not the next fire, or anything else, it’s the one right in front of him. In business it’s the most important task that needs to be done next. Not the most exciting or most fun, it’s the most important. Keep your mind open Learn the art of being open to the influence of others, other professions, even if they don’t have the specific answer you’re looking for. You can modify it. You can even learn from a McDonalds ad. Yes they may be selling burgers and fries, but can you use part of their message in your own sales pitch? Look at other industries…see what you can learn – LOOK FOR THE CONNECTIONS ON HOW IT CAN BE APPLIED to your circumstances. If you’re looking for answers the universe will provide them, but if you’re not looking it will also meet those requirement as well. All the answers you’ll ever need in life and business are out there; you’ve just got to put it all together. It’s like huge jigsaw puzzle for life. You’ve got all the pieces to make a picture, but it’s disorganised; however you know what the end product looks like and you know the first few steps. Start with putting the edges together, and then work on the rest. Smart People Good operators are always walking around with a notebook in their hands. They’re ready to learn. They cut things out of magazines and they always go into meetings with an open mind. You can learn something from every person you meet. You need Switch Off Days You need to take time off from your work and really recharge the batteries. Top Up Moments Take 10 – 15 minutes a few times per day to reconnect with the universe. Go for a walk, or play with the dog. You may try to listen to the bird noises amongst the car noises and barking dogs. Stop and feel the breeze on your face. This is all part of having a mental break to top up your energy. You also need to top yourself up with good food, sensible exercise. Daily Routines We’re products of our daily actions and daily thoughts. If a dog barks and you get annoyed, you must ask yourself why? These things happen, so you’ve got to accept it. We are the average of the five people we hang around with the most – Jim Rohn. Dean suggests living by this quote. If you come across an angry person and their full of negative energy, you need to phone someone you know who’s positive to help offset and balance the energy in your day. Deans Mantra: Today I’m going to be EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT, Safe and fit For Purpose. Can you say the same? Dean’s Book, Fight Fire with Fire is available from Amazon and other online book stores and feel free to connect with Dean Hawkins via his website http://www.deanhawkins.com.au/ If you have any question please feel free to email me directly at tf@tysonfranklin.com My latest book It’s No Secret There’s Money In Small Business is now available from all online booksellers, and if you live in Australia it can be ordered from most bookstores. Abby is one of Australia’s foremost strategic sponsorship advisors to the For-Purpose Sector and has more than 25 years experience in marketing, sales, adult education, communications, event management and corporate and cause-related sponsorship. Abby’s proven pathways to infinite sponsorship success support For-Purpose organisations, charities and events to help them understand their value to corporate partners and to make compelling approaches that allow them to diversify their income streams and continue their vital work in the community. Interestingly, while we discussed the Not-For-Profit sector heavily, you should absolutely still listen to the show if you are thinking “I don’t work in that sector”. That’s because, as we spoke, it became quite clear that there are a lot of elements, tactics and mindsets that are equally applicable, no matter where you work, and Abby gives some great advice around it all. There is definitely something for everyone. Abby has also authored a number of books that provide practical and easily implementable solutions and you can download two that are discussed in the show at, 5 Myths Of Non-Profit Sponsorship; and 8 Easy Steps To Turn Cold Calls Into Hot Prospects If you want to connect with Abby, visit www.infinitysponsorship.com.au or you can find her on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can also check out her courses at www.sponsorship-university.com Finally, Mark has started a blog series as a supplement to our impending launch of Sponsorship Planner (which you can learn more about in the show) and he speaks about which benefits are best placed to help achieve two of the most common sponsorship objectives, Brand Awareness and Brand Positioning. The answer- "A pencil." Braun then backpacked through 50+ countries to deeply understand the state of global education and develop a best-practice model to help local communities organize and educate their children.Pencils of Promise is now a leading nonprofit organization that has broken ground on more than 200 schools across Africa, Asia and Latin America and delivered nearly 10 million educational hours in its first five years. When we hear the word, or hear about “non-profits,” we often think about organizations that seem like they are fighting the oncoming wave in order to try and do good.  Often with noble purpose, sometimes the mission seems too big, the emotional pull too intense, or success too fleeting.Today all of that is changing.  We have a whole new group of organizations, perhaps the Gates Foundation being the penultimate example,  that look to the ideas and metrics of the for profit world.  They realize the importance of scale, marketing, transparency and ways to measure real success.  They are, as Adam Braun calls them, FOR PURPOSE organizations. Adam is the founder of one of those organizations, Pencils of Promise.  He has now written about his experiences in The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change. My conversation with Adam Braun:

"Make your life a story worth telling." Today I’ve got my good friend Adam Braun on the show, and I’m excited because I’ve been able to be a part of his story over the last 5 years of building his charity, Pencils of Promise. I met Adam through a mutual friend, Reid, and after a couple beers, we set off to what has become a synchronous business partnership. As we talk about later in the podcast, one thing I saw in him when we met was a mixture that is rare: a bleeding heart for the cause, and the amazing mind to build a business. He invited me to come to Laos to shoot and build branding imagery for the organization when he had built one school. Now fast forward 5 years and we just got back from Ghana together and celebrated the ground breaking of the 200th school. I feel so grateful to have been able to be a part of the movement. Adam’s new book called “The Promise of a Pencil” comes out this week. I’m excited about the release as it’s going to be an amazing one about finding your purpose, with 30 lessons and stories on how to do that. Not only is his story great, but if you find yourself in a place where you are searching for your purpose, it will be a great read. Adam really discovered his purpose after he was on the Semester at Sea boat that was hit by a 60 foot wave and they barely made it out alive. Now he sees living life with purpose as the most fulfilling way to live. I always describe Adam as the guy you talk to for 5 minutes and you want to go change the world. He’s a highly inspiring individual and is on a mission to create a new space at the intersect of the non-profit and for profit space he calls "For Purpose," which we talk a little bit about in the podcast. Get pumped to want to get off your butt and change the world! "The longer time that you spend being content, satisfied, and comfortable, the less exposure you have to self-discovery." Some things we learn in this podcast: The impact of growing up in Connecticut with a fascination for finance and wall street What it's like getting into the hedge fund game at 16 years old How working with Bain Capital helped mold his creative entrepreneurship How a life threatening Semester At Sea kickstarted a life of purpose Why meaning and purpose are core to success and a creative How to apply business skills to social enterprise The origins of Pencils of Promise To turn things we take for granted, like a birthday, and make an opportunity to change the world. Why an organization like Pencils of Promise can fuel a creative career even more than commercial shoots. Connect with Adam: Instagram | Twitter | Website | PoP
