The benefits of getting a shingles vaccine seem relatively straightforward: It will prevent you from getting shingles, a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. But researchers have found a surprising link between getting the shingles vaccine and a lower risk of developing dementia. And that's not the only vaccine that seems to have additional benefits. So what's going on here?  To help explain this research are epidemiologist Pascal Geldsetzer, who studies the association between the shingles vaccine and lower rates of dementia; and physician and epidemiologist Helen Chu, who studies the Flu, RSV and COVID-19 viruses. Guests: Dr. Pascal Geldsetzer is an assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology and population health at Stanford University.  Dr. Helen Chu is a professor of epidemiology, allergy and infectious diseases at the University of Washington.  Other episodes you may enjoy: Study Finds COVID mRNA Vaccines Boost Cancer Treatment As Cervical Cancer Deaths Plummet, Experts Credit HPV Vaccine Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. A new trial is starting this summer, as part of a programme to develop a vaccine for people against bird flu. 3000 volunteers are needed from the UK to take part, and 1000 in the USA. Researchers at the National Institute for Health and Care Research are hoping that poultry workers might take part.A new report warns that UK farming's reliance on imported fertiliser and minerals, puts it at risk in times of geopolitical stress. Analysis, published by the National Preparedness Commission, highlights the fragility of global supply chains on which UK agriculture depends.Fuel and fertiliser costs are soaring because of disruption caused by the war in the Middle East. That's having a big impact on farmers and it's also putting pressure on food prices as MPs on the Environment Food and Rural Affairs select committee have been hearing. They were told that food prices were 40% higher than before Covid and that the food supply chain needed urgent government support with fuel costs. We visit a field trial of a gene-edited barley which contains higher levels of fat. Scientists believe this will make it a more efficient livestock feed, and could also reduce methane emissions by making it more digestible.Thatching is becoming more of a challenge due to issues with some of the materials. Supplies of the right sort of wheat straw can be unpredictable and the hazel spars used to attach the thatch to the roof now have to be imported from Eastern Europe. To kick start interest in growing more locally a ‘summit' of thatchers, farmers and plant scientists was held this week in Suffolk.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

From the Middle East to global energy markets, Tara breaks down the strategic moves reshaping the world. Learn how Israel and the U.S. are countering Iran, the risks for Marines on the ground, the geopolitical ripple effects on Russia, China, and Venezuela, and why Democrats are panicking over Trump's energy moves. Plus, get insights on flu and COVID vaccines and what the CDC isn't emphasizing. SUMMARY In this episode, Tara dives deep into international conflict, energy policy, and public health: Middle East & Iran War: The new Iranian leadership has not been publicly seen—proof of life remains unverified. Israel plays a pivotal role in countering Iran and Hezbollah, carrying out strikes, intelligence operations, and targeted removals of Iranian nuclear scientists. Limited U.S. ground operations may be deployed in key strategic areas like the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to cripple Iran's oil economy. The broader regional impact spans 12 countries, influencing alliances with Arab nations, Russia, India, China, and NATO dynamics. Energy & Oil Policy: Trump's moves to lift certain Russian oil sanctions are set to drop global oil prices, reversing Democrat-inflated energy costs caused by prior sanctions. These shifts have major implications for U.S. households, global oil markets, and geopolitical power, including China's economic positioning and Russia's oil influence. Public Health Spotlight: Flu vaccines: 200–250 reported deaths annually, possibly up to 1,000 due to underreporting; CDC reports vaccine effectiveness as low as 25% and often readjusted downward over time. COVID vaccines: Adenovirus-based vaccines linked to rare but dangerous blood clots, with media coverage downplaying the risks. Tara emphasizes informed consent and questioning medical advice. Domestic Security & Policy: Highlights recent terror-related incidents in the U.S., including attacks linked to Hezbollah and ISIS, and how failures in immigration and gun law enforcement contributed. Straw purchasing and federal gun enforcement policies under Biden are analyzed as contributing factors to domestic security vulnerabilities. KEY TALKING POINTS Israel's intelligence and military operations against Iran and Hezbollah Strategic implications of potential U.S. limited ground operations Trump's energy policy and lifting of Russian oil sanctions Impact on global oil prices, Russia, China, India, and NATO CDC data on flu and COVID vaccine effectiveness and risks Domestic terror threats, immigration policy failures, and gun enforcement issues SOCIAL MEDIA BLURB From Iran to oil markets, Israel to U.S. Marines, Tara exposes the strategies reshaping the world

Tara breaks down today's top stories: Israel's covert and overt operations against Iran, the strategic moves reshaping oil markets, domestic security failures, and what you're not being told about flu and COVID vaccines. From geopolitics to public health, this episode exposes the untold connections influencing your world. SUMMARY Middle East & Iran Conflict: Iran's new leadership remains unseen publicly; proof of life is still demanded by many. Israel is leading covert operations, striking Hezbollah targets across Lebanon and taking out key Iranian nuclear scientists. Limited U.S. forces may be deployed in strategic zones, like the Strait of Hormuz, to control oil flow and pressure Iran economically. Regional conflict impacts 12+ countries, influencing Arab nations, Russia, India, China, and NATO dynamics. Israel's intelligence and military actions prevent a broader escalation and protect U.S. strategic interests. Global Energy & Oil Markets: Trump's lifting of Russian oil sanctions threatens to dramatically lower global oil prices, reversing artificial inflation caused by prior sanctions. Lower oil prices impact U.S. households, the global economy, and geopolitical leverage, including pressure on China and Russia. Democrats are panicking over oil price drops and the potential shift in global energy control. Public Health Insights: Flu vaccines: CDC reports 20–25 deaths per year, potentially underreported by 10x, with effectiveness as low as 25%. COVID vaccines: Adenovirus-based vaccines linked to rare blood clots; media coverage downplays risks and avoids full disclosure. Tara emphasizes informed consent, questioning medical guidance, and reviewing CDC data critically. Domestic Security & Policy Failures: Terror incidents in the U.S., including individuals with Hezbollah contacts, highlight gaps in immigration and gun enforcement policies. Straw purchasing loopholes and DOJ enforcement failures contributed to weapons ending up in criminal hands. Biden-era policies are analyzed as exacerbating domestic vulnerability to terrorist threats. Political Context & Strategy: U.S. global strategy is reshaping alliances, constraining Iran, and influencing energy flows. Trump's moves in energy, military readiness, and sanctions highlight contrasts with prior administration policies. Changes affect global power structures, including NATO, Russia, China, and Latin America, creating a pivotal historical inflection point. KEY TALKING POINTS Israel's multi-front operations in Lebanon and Iran Strategic implications of potential U.S. limited ground operations in the Middle East Global oil markets and Russian sanctions reversal Vaccine safety, CDC reporting, and public awareness Domestic security, immigration, and gun enforcement failures Broader geopolitical effects on NATO, China, Russia, and Latin America SOCIAL MEDIA BLURB Israel strikes, Iran tensions, global oil shocks

Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 3-05-2026: Dr. Dawn demonstrates how to critically read a science paper using a widely-publicized study claiming adolescent cannabis use causes psychotic, bipolar, and anxiety disorders. She identifies multiple methodological problems: only 5.7% of Kaiser adolescents admitted cannabis use versus 11.2% in anonymous national surveys, suggesting massive underreporting; the study conflates any use with heavy use; and with 463,000 participants, trivially small differences become statistically significant but clinically meaningless. She proposes reverse causation—that prodromal schizophrenia symptoms may drive teens to self-medicate with cannabis rather than cannabis causing psychosis. The study also included "disruptive behavior disorder" diagnoses that lack rigorous criteria, and she notes diagnostic codes are sometimes chosen for insurance reimbursement rather than accuracy. While acknowledging high-dose THC before age 16 may affect brain development, she concludes the headlines claiming causation are not supported by the actual findings. Dr. Dawn discusses how aquaculture—now producing 60% of fish consumed globally—has become a breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant pathogens. More antibiotics per kilogram are used in fish farming than in any other animal agriculture, with drugs dissolving into water and sediment where bacteria develop resistance. One study found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in over 80% of shrimp species tested across multiple countries. Through horizontal gene transfer, these resistance genes spread to human pathogens—a 1991 Latin American cholera outbreak affecting nearly a million people may have acquired drug resistance from Ecuadorian shrimp farms. Dr. Dawn reports that the FDA rejected Moderna's mRNA flu vaccine application without even reviewing it, despite trials of 41,000 people showing it was 27% more effective at preventing illness and 29% more effective at preventing hospitalization than existing vaccines. She attributes this to politicized anti-mRNA bias lacking scientific basis, noting that venture capital investors like Blackstone (who invested $750 million) will now avoid vaccine development, effectively handing this critical technology to other countries. Dr. Dawn describes the "wellness industrial complex"—pharmaceuticals, tech, testing companies, and health influencers creating content that pathologizes normal behaviors. YouTube health videos have amassed 200 billion views, and 30% of British respondents now get medical advice from AI chatbots. She cites a 400% increase in British adults seeking ADHD diagnoses, noting that analysis of top TikTok ADHD videos found less than 50% accurately reflected actual symptoms. Many influencers receive undisclosed payments to mention products, and the U.S. and New Zealand are the only countries allowing direct-to-consumer drug advertising. A caller asks about navigating Medicare after their Advantage plan was terminated with no local providers accepting remaining plans. Dr. Dawn explains that Medicare Advantage companies took extra government payments meant for wellness programs but didn't build them, and are now exiting markets as costs rise. She recommends contacting Gray Bears or AARP for free Medicare navigation assistance and suggests exploring regular Medicare with a secondary plan or direct-pay practices. /li>

00:46 A multi-variant avian flu vaccine that could enhance pandemic preparednessA vaccine capable of protecting against multiple strains of avian influenza virus may be a step closer, according to new research. The H5 subtype of avian influenza viruses has spilled over into mammals and is particularly concerning to researchers due to the risk of them evolving to cause another pandemic. But because there are multiple variants of these viruses, it has been hard to pre-prepare vaccines. Now, a team have used information on how these viruses evolved over time to design a vaccine that in animal studies provided protection against different H5 strains. They hope their approach could be applied to create stockpiles of vaccine that could be used in the event of a pandemic, regardless of the strain that causes it.Research Article: Kok et al.10:53 Research HighlightsMaking muon beams without a huge particle accelerator — plus, the bats hunting migrating birds in mid-air.Research Highlight: Portable muon beam could accelerate archaeology scansResearch Highlight: European bats capture migrating birds and eat them on the wing13:34 Briefing ChatA new search engine that can sift through the staggering volumes of biological data, and the multiple failings revealed by an assessment of 25 years of carbon offsetting data.Nature: ‘Google for DNA' brings order to biology's big dataThe Guardian: Carbon offsets fail to cut global heating due to ‘intractable' systemic problems, study saysSubscribe to Nature Briefing, an unmissable daily round-up of science news, opinion and analysis free in your inbox every weekday. The flu is a contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. In most healthy adults, flu symptoms are typically mild and resolve within about a week. However, during pregnancy, the body's heightened inflammatory response can increase the risk of complications. To reduce these risks and provide passive immunity to babies, healthcare professionals recommend that pregnant women receive the flu vaccine during flu season. Deciding whether to get vaccinated during pregnancy can be a challenging task, as it involves weighing all of the potential risks and benefits. Additionally, you have choices regarding the type of flu vaccine and the timing of administration. This episode reviews the research and considerations for making an informed decision about the flu vaccine during pregnancy. This episode is up to date for the 2025-26 flu season.
