New York-based artist, writer, and publisher Paul Chan came to prominence in the early 2000s with vibrant moving image works that touched upon aspects of war, religion, pleasure, and politics. Around 2009, following a decade of art-making, Chan embarked on a self-imposed break, turning his attention to experimental publishing and the economics of information by founding the press Badlands Unlimited. Taking the notion of a “breather” as its organizing principle, this exhibition surveys Chan's activities since his voluntary break from that point to the present.
The official poverty rate in the U.S. stood at about 11.5% in 2022. But as Jeff Fuhrer highlights, this is almost certainly a vast undercounting. He estimates that about 40% of people struggle to afford basic necessities like food, housing, and transportation. He joins EconoFact Chats to discuss why official poverty measures underestimate poverty, what this means for a nation that prides itself on meritocracy, and how policies to alleviate poverty offer a win-win opportunity. Jeff served for nearly four decades in the Federal Reserve System, first at the Board of Governors in Washington, DC, followed by more than 25 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Currently, he is a non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a Foundation Fellow at the Eastern Bank Foundation. He is the author of the award-winning 2023 book 'The Myth that Made Us: How False Beliefs about Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and How to Fix It).'

Author Jeff Fuhrer knows the narratives used to shape the economy, and he believes those narratives need to change. Fuhrer is an economist, and has been active in economic research for more than three decades--including the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston where he served as Director of Research, Executive Vice President, and Senior Policy Advisor. Now, Jeff is a Nonresident Fellow for the Brookings Institution and a Foundation Fellow for the Eastern Bank Foundation.rnrnIn his book, The Myth That Made Us: How False Beliefs about Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and How to Fix It), Fuhrer explores the link between widely held but false narratives about poverty and race and poor outcomes for many in the U.S. economy. From a supposedly post-racist nation and the self-made man, Fuhrer argues that systemic racism continues to produce vastly disparate outcomes and that our brand of capitalism favors doing little to reduce disparities.rnrnIn addition to his book, he is working with a large collaborative to update the findings of the Federal Reserve's 2015 "Color of Wealth in Boston" study. Jeff also recently finished a 2-1/2 year term as a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
In this enlightening episode, Jeff Fuhrer, a Non-Resident Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a Foundation Fellow at the Eastern Bank Foundation & Author of "The Myth That Made Us, How False Beliefs About Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and how to fix it)", dives into the underbelly of the US economy, exposing the deeply entrenched false narratives about poverty and race. Through insights from his latest book, he takes a hard look at how these myths fundamentally break our economy and perpetuate wealth inequality. Jeff delves into the historical government policies and how their ripple effects are still felt today. What can be done to fix these systemic issues? How critical are genuine relationships and trust-building in this process? Tune in as we explore these compelling themes, the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion, and discuss ways to challenge and change these societal narratives. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation that subtly addresses the power of voting, acknowledging history, and speaking truth to power in order to begin mending the wealth gap. Remember, change begins with understanding.Episode Highlights:13:02 - It's a bootstrap, but it's also broken. It's usually a loop that you can put your finger in. And so it's a broken bootstrap, which is just a stylized way of saying pulling yourself up by bootstraps does not work. But it is a myth that is definitely out there. And that's another way of saying the meritocracy thing, "Well, work hard, pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Individual achievement is what we're all about."13:58 - I want that to create an impact. I want people to feel like, "Wow. All this is going on today, despite our being one of the most wealthy countries in the world, by most measures, the most wealthy country in the world." So what do we do to fix it?23:28 - I think it's important not to be naive about the political environment in which we are living. Everybody knows and understands it's fractured and fragmented and fractious.Contact LinksJuliette MayersLinkedInWebsiteJuliette's BooksInspiration Zone Newsletter Sign-UpJeff FuhrerWebsiteLinkedInThe Myth that Made Us, How False Beliefs About Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and how to fix it)
On episode 199, we welcome Jeffrey Fuhrer to discuss the fallacy of trickle down economics and the self-made myth, what companies actually do with tax breaks, the distinct perspectives of the flaws of human nature in communism and capitalism, the wealth gap and racial income disparities, what happens when governments intervene with subsidies for poor people, the hubris of corporations in zero-sum thinking, Leon's exit from libertarianism and the usual mental gymnastics of libertarians, cultivating a system of minimal wage in accordance with profits, reparations, and the importance of meeting people instead of forming preconceived notions of their struggles. Jeff Fuhrer is a nonresident fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and a Foundation Fellow for the Eastern Bank Foundation. He was previously Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, where he was also responsible for the bank's diversity and inclusion functions. Jeffrey Fuhrer joins EconoFact Chats to discuss his new book, 'The Myth That Made Us: How False Beliefs about Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and How to Fix It),' highlighting how the unfounded belief that individual success and failure is just a function of hard work, or the lack of it -- what he terms ‘the myth' -- has shaped policies and public perceptions in ways that have caused economic harm to millions. Jeff also highlights policies that can help remedy longstanding socio-economic disparities.

React - Disturbing is that colleges and universities, particularly HBCUs, continuing to be co-conspirators in their own disenfranchisement as created by these rankings. While several presidents, including Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick and Winston-Salem State University Chancellor Elwood Robinson have spoken out against the rankings, far too many institutions use them in their marketing and engagement campaigns. And then we wonder why “higher ranked” predominantly white institutions have better chances at recruiting Black students away from HBCUs. Subscribe at educationnewsflash.substack.com
Today I'm joined by Jonathan Wolf, the co-founder and CEO of ZOE — a personalized nutrition company. In this episode, we talk about the gut microbiome, at-home test kits, and how ZOE helps people understand the impact different foods have on their well-being. We also discuss the benefits and challenges of a direct-to-consumer model versus seeking FDA approval for companies in the health diagnostic or wearables space. More from Jonathan Jonathan is the cofounder of health technology company ZOE. ZOE teaches you how your own body responds to food, based on personalized tests, AI and the largest in-depth nutritional study in the world carried out with Mass General Hospital, Stanford Medicine and King's College London. He is also the cofounder of ZOE's COVID Symptom Study, the largest study of COVID in the world with over 4 million users. The study is now funded by the UK government and provides real-time monitoring of COVID cases, support for vaccine trials and crucial scientific research with KCL such as papers in Nature Medicine on which symptoms predict COVID, the importance of anosmia and the first systematic study of long COVID. Previously he was Chief Product Officer at Criteo which was a 30 person start-up when he joined. Seven years later when he left it was public on NASDAQ, with over 2,000 people and over $1Bn revenue of revenue. In that time Jonathan built the product organization, created the publisher and midmarket sales organization, and opened the New York office. Prior to this Jonathan worked at Yahoo! Jonathan attended Oxford University where he received the Gibbs prize for Physics and was President of the Oxford Union, and was then at Harvard. He has been a Foundation Fellow at Corpus Christi College Oxford since 2015. ZOE has been the source of some of the most groundbreaking research around nutrition and how the food we eat affects us individually. Formed three years ago when Tim Spector joined forces with Jonathan Wolf and George Hadjigeorgiou, ZOE was founded on the belief that new technologies could enable scientific research at an unprecedented scale, allowing us to understand individual responses in the real world.ZOE has given us a greater understanding of our highly individual responses to nutrients and stimulus, thanks to their pioneering studies. In this Table Talk we look back to the discussions we've had with Tim Spector, Jonathan Wolf and PREDICT 2 research lead Dr. Sarah Berry, and highlight the insight they've uncovered through their research.About our guestsJonathan Wolf, Co-Founder & CEO, ZOEJonathan is a cofounder and CEO of ZOE, a nutritional science company on a mission to help people eat with confidence.Previously he was Chief Product Officer for machine learning company Criteo, helping take the business in 7 years from start-up to NASDAQ IPO, 2,000 employees and over $1Bn revenue. Prior to this Jonathan worked at Yahoo, Atlas Venture and Boston Consulting Group.Jonathan attended Oxford University where he received the Gibbs prize for Physics and was President of the Oxford Union, and was then at Harvard doing a non-degree program. He has been a Foundation Fellow at Corpus Christi College Oxford since 2015.Dr. Sarah Berry, Senior Lecturer, Kings College London, and Research Lead, Predict 2Dr Sarah Berry’s research interests relate to the influence of dietary components on cardiometabolic disease risk; with particular focus on postprandial metabolism and vascular dysfunction. Since commencing her research career at King’s College London in 2000, she has been the academic leader for more than 30 human nutrition studies in cardio-metabolic health. Sarah’s ongoing research involves human and mechanistic studies to elucidate how markers of cardiometabolic health can be modulated following acute and chronic intakes of different fatty acids and interesterified fats, as well as studies to investigate the influence of cell wall integrity on macronutrient and micronutrient release from different plant-based foods. Sarah is also the lead nutritional scientist on the world’s largest ongoing programme of postprandial metabolic studies (the PREDICT studies), assessing the genetic, metabolic, metagenomic, and meal-dependent effects on postprandial metabolic responses.Tim Spector, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Director of the TwinsUK Registry at Kings College, London, and Co-founder, ZOETim Spector is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Director of the TwinsUK Registry at Kings College, London and has recently been elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He trained originally in rheumatology and epidemiology. In 1992 he moved into genetic epidemiology and founded the UK Twins Registry, of 13,000 twins, which is the richest collection of genotypic and phenotypic information worldwide. He is past President of the International Society of Twin Studies, directs the European Twin Registry Consortium (Discotwin) and collaborates with over 120 centres worldwide. He has demonstrated the genetic basis of a wide range of common complex traits, many previously thought to be mainly due to ageing and environment.Through genetic association studies (GWAS), his group have found over 500 novel gene loci in over 50 disease areas. He has published over 800 research articles and is ranked as being in the top 1% of the world’s most cited scientists by Thomson-Reuters. He held a prestigious European Research Council senior investigator award in epigenetics and is a NIHR Senior Investigator. His current work focuses on omics and the microbiome and directs the crowdfunded British Gut microbiome project. Together with an international team of leading scientists including researchers from King’s College London, Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts University, Stanford University and nutritional science company ZOE he is conducting the largest scientific nutrition research project, showing that individual responses to the same foods are unique, even between identical twins. You can find more on https://joinzoe.com/ He is a prolific writer with several popular science books and a regular blog, focusing on genetics, epigenetics and most recently microbiome and diet (The Diet Myth). He is in demand as a public speaker and features regularly in the media.
