In this Memorial Day episode of The Daily Herold, Jon Herold pays tribute to America's fallen heroes while unpacking a whirlwind of geopolitical power shifts, economic reforms, and cultural chaos. Trump's Memorial Day message blends reverence with savage takedowns of open borders, activist judges, and the DC swamp, setting the tone for a show brimming with hard truths and sharp commentary. Jon breaks down Trump's invocation of the Defense Production Act to fast-track nuclear energy, a strategic move with global implications, particularly for data centers and AI infrastructure. He dives into the future of small modular reactors and the race for energy dominance, tying in the crypto boom and Trump Media's plan to raise $3B to invest in Bitcoin. The episode also explores the war in Ukraine, Trump's jabs at Putin and Zelensky, and the drone warfare redefining modern conflict. Updates on Harvard's foreign student standoff, the Big Beautiful Bill's Senate fight, Grok AI's federal use, and a federal court's dismissal of Carter Page's lawsuit round out the show. With memes, Macron slaps, and a fiery liberal meltdown thrown in, this episode delivers a signature mix of insight, irreverence, and political real talk, Jon style.

Don't forget to subscribe for free to our newsletter, the top 10 ideas of the week, every Monday --------- Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff approaches global finance with the same strategic foresight that made him a chess grandmaster. Author of the new book Our Dollar, Your Problem, Rogoff doesn't sugarcoat America's future: he foresees a significant inflation shock within a decade, far more severe than the post-COVID bout. When this second wave hits, he warns, "credibility's really going to be shot." In this conversation, Ken and Tyler tackle international economic dynamics, unresolved macro puzzles, the state of chess, and more, including whether trade deficits are truly unsustainable, why China's investment-heavy growth model has reached its limits, how currency depreciation neutralizes tariff effects, Pakistan's IMF bailouts, whether more Latin American countries should dollarize, Japan's deceptively peaceful economic decline, Europe's coming fiscal reckoning, how the US will eventually confront its ballooning debt, the puzzling absence of a recession during our recent disinflation, the potential of phasing out large denomination currency notes, the future relevance of stablecoins, whether America should start a CBDC, Argentina's chances under Milei, who will be the next dominant player in chess, hanging out with Bobby Fischer, drawing out against Magnus Carlsen, and how to save classical chess from excessive computer preparation. Conversations with Tyler Key Takeaways “Looking way forward, we are on an unsustainable path.” – Kenneth Rogoff on the US fiscal situation The debt continues to balloon and another inflationary impulse is on the horizon Higher taxation is likely as a means to manage the deficit Japan has been effective at becoming sclerotic slowly, but their economic model is not worth imitating – especially if you are trying to compete with China Japan could be in serious trouble: It is finally experiencing inflation, needing to raise interest rates, has stuffed government debt into every orifice of its economy, and cutting old-age benefits to pay its growing interest expense“I think this is absolutely an existential crisis for Europe. It may lead to them becoming more cohesive. It may lead to them becoming more of a geopolitical power, but yes, they are going to have to make choices that they haven't had to make.” – Kenneth Rogoff on the economic situation in Europe The US brain drain of Europe's top talent contributes to Europe's slow economic growthSuddenly, the United States spends more on interest expense than it does on defense spendingThe fact that real interest rates appear to have regressed to their long-term trend is the most important macro change in the world The US should not be the first nation to implement a CBDC, if it ultimately chooses to do soWhy change the rules of the game if we are on top and winning? The US is so big that we are probably headed towards having competitive stable coins instead of a single CBDC Bet on mean reversion: For many variables, it's wise to assume they'll eventually drift back toward their average – it's a useful principle to keep in mindThe predictability of political business cycles: Those in power ignore the debt, the problem grows, and we end up exactly where we are nowChoosing the optimal inflation rate is one of the greatest macro puzzles – should it be 0%, 2%, 4%, or something else? China has dug itself in a very deep hole that will be difficult to dig out of: Innovation is required for a successful economy; just growing by building more roads and infrastructure will result in diminishing returns Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff approaches global finance with the same strategic foresight that made him a chess grandmaster. In a packed Saturday night edition of Devolution Power Hour, Jon Herold and Chris Paul dive into a whirlwind of topics connecting culture, geopolitics, and narrative warfare. They start light with the NFL draft drama surrounding Shedeur Sanders, exposing how Trump's casual posts seemingly shattered a media-manufactured story in real time. Then they pivot into Trump's meeting with Zelensky at the Pope's funeral, dissecting its optics, body language, and what Trump's subtle rebuke of Putin really signals in the broader geopolitical chess match. From there, Jon and Chris explore NATO's desperate attempts to stay relevant in Ukraine, the accelerating collapse of the Crossfire Hurricane coverup, and how Israel's AI warfare tech reveals just how advanced military technology has become. They also cover nuclear energy diplomacy with Armenia and Iran, the Abraham Accords expansion, and how sovereignty battles are being framed through economic and military alliances. Wrapping up, they discuss the FBI arresting corrupt judges, Katie Hobbs' ties to human smuggling scandals, the Defense Policy Board purge, and how Trump's new executive orders targeting ActBlue and foreign interference connect back to EO 13848. It is a sprawling, energetic episode packed with insight, theory, humor, and serious truth bombs.
Bill Reinsch of CSIS and the Trade Guys podcast with Jay Goldberg of Digits and Dollars and the Circuit podcast join to dicuss Trump's tariff impact on semis on another CSIS-ChinaTalk Chip Chat! Bill lays out the four clashing instincts driving policy in MAGA 2.0: revenge for decades of perceived slights, a bargaining bluff to coerce concessions, a fast‑cash revenue grab, and a fantasy of instant on‑shore fab construction. Jay walks through the on‑the‑ground fallout: chip designers worrying about losing China sales, GPU‑specific duties warping supply chains, and a loophole that lets boards assembled in Mexico skate by. We explore how blanket tariffs could accelerate China's ascent in analog and trailing‑edge chips, undermine Biden‑era “ally‑first” export‑control diplomacy, and leave Commerce's BIS badly under‑resourced to enforce the rules. We also get into whether allies will sign up for Washington's crusade after being slapped themselves, and whether Nvidia, Intel, and Tesla are “too important to punish.” Outtro Music: Well Get It, Tommy Dorsey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgiHzCiB5Aw Bible‑Verse Sign‑off “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22 Learn more about your ad choices. This week I got the chance to catch up with author, trainer and Chessable author, GM Eugene Perelshteyn. We begin by discussing a recent online cheating controversy. An anonymous account was banned from Chess.com after beating GM Daniel Naroditsky in an online bullet match using only the “Meadow Hay” Gambit. Is this gambit so bad that it makes cheating likely? This controversy served as a springboard to discuss both online cheating and dodgy gambits. Eugene has recently released a course “Every Gambit Refuted” so he also shared general advice on how to react when you face an unknown gambit. These days, gambits can be particularly dangerous, as creators like IM Eric Rosen and GothamChess teach their audiences tricky openings. Finally, Eugene and I discuss some issues from the world of professional chess, including a lack of affordable opportunities to compete for the non-elite, the FIDE Candidates (which Eugene attended) and “the great eval bar debate.” Eugene is always insightful and it was great to catch up with him! This week we explore the tip of the superhero toyline iceberg with Toy Biz's sprawling X-Men line from the mid-1990s. It's easy to forget the world before the MCU and other big-budget summer superhero pictures ruled pop culture, but in the 90s, the Fox Kids X-Men cartoon and its associated action figure line were among the bigger influences in the realm of superheroes. Join us as we scour the Kay-Bee Toys discount bin for the best Wolverines, Rogues, and Gambits of the 90s. It's episode five, Captive Hearts. Is it Repeatable? Listen to find out...but spoiler, no. No it is not. But still listen to find out why!Seth goes on a number of rants, and Matt can't stop finding the best in everything. Because he's a better person. PLUS, Gambit bears (almost) all in a special scene that took us by surprise - along with the generation of 12 year olds that would have been watching.Special note to any creators, cast or crew of X-men:TAS listening: Seth (me) was very harsh in this one. We appreciate the effort and time that goes into making any TV show, and know that the end result is not a reflection of your talents as creators. We hope we (Seth) haven't offended anyone (and please invite me to your next party!).If you'd like to reach the show with a question or comment, send an email to repeatablepod@gmail.com. I'll be putting up speed-drawings of your favourite scenes from this episode in the YouTube version of the show. Send in your requests, and maybe it'll end up on the podcast...just no Gambits in a speedo, please.

It could be a Stan Lee comic. Tragic origin, raised in a nearly-hostile orphanage, forced to learn the world's ropes on her own, and constantly fighting off the effects of tranquilizers, Beth Harmon discovers that she has a superpower: she's REALLY good at chess. The Queen's Gambit tees up tons of great themes about a young woman in the 1950's and 60's making her way in a man's world, navigating relationships, and wrestling with addiction. Is she more than her analytical powers? Can she stand against a Russian grandmaster backed by a chess establishment that has the advantage of decades of experience over her? And along the way, is romance a game she's fated to lose? Gambits are a kind of offer in chess: lots of excitement and the possibility of victory, but with a lot more risk along the way, if you dare to take them on instead of playing it safe in the duller, familiar lines. Turns out that Beth Harmon has a chance to play the Gambit we all get offered: to love and be loved in the broken world, and find patterns of victory in its midst nonetheless.
When it comes to starting conversations, it's really hit or miss. If you talk about football with a woman, more than likely they will be clueless. I was one-dimension about 11 years ago because I was so involved with sports while living in America that I couldn't initiate conversations with anyone on other topics. If you find it hard to start conversations, you need to take notes in this podcast and start building up the conversation starters!TOEFL iBT Webinar (Independent, July 24th): https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-ibt-independent-essay-webinar/buyTOEFL iBT Webinar (Speaking Part 3 July 31st): https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-ibt-speaking-question-3-webinar/buyTry my memberships FOR FREE: https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-ibt/buyPodia TOEFL Memberships: https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-ibtPodia TOEFL iTP Course (Reading presale): https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-itp-reading/buyPodia TOEFL iTP Course (Structure): https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-itp-structure/buyPodia TOEFL iTP Course (Written Expression): https://arsenioseslpodcast.podia.com/toefl-itp-written-expressionInstagram ESL Podcast: https://www.instagram.com/arsenioseslpodcast/Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7hdzplWx6xB8mhwDJYiP6fFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Arseniobuck/?ref=bookmarksYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIzp4EdbJVMhhSnq_0u4ntAWebsite: https://thearseniobuckshow.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/arsenio-buck-9692a6119/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thearseniobuckshow/?hl=enBuzz sprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/165390
We're finally here! Conversation gambits! This is going to be a two-part podcast with lots of fire, so you better prepare yourself. How do you normally start conversations with someone you don't know? Are you limited to subjects? For example, from childhood to about 2012, I was limited to only sports. So, it was extremely difficult to speak to anyone outside of sports, resulting in failed conversations. If I look at the people I was around from 2006-2011, they only knew about sports...so then my entire world was very small. It wasn't until I lived in Australia when I had the opportunity to start speaking about my travels. However, in Las Vegas, the majority of people NEVER travel outside the city, let alone the country. So it had become increasingly difficult to start conversations because they became jealous when I told them about my travels. Don't let others minimize your success because of their narrow-mindedness. It wasn't until my battles out here in Thailand, how I overcame everything, and my entrepreneurial success when I developed ideas in ALL subject areas that I became a phenomenal conversationalist. While Sean is still stuck in Miyazaki-land with Dark Souls 3, Blake has ventured onward from Sekiro: Shadows Die An Undetermined Number of Times to begin Final Fantasy XII: That One You Probably Skipped. That's right, for once Blake is playing the older game, and to keep up with this opposite-world trope it's one Sean has actually played before. What follows is a lengthy discussion about the merits (or lack thereof) of various Final Fantasy battle systems, how much the world of video games has changed with social distancing in full force, and when exactly Polygon stopped sucking so much.
