EP 385- GM Eugene Perelshteyn: Recent Online Cheating Drama, Tips for Facing Dodgy Gambits & the Future of Professional Chess

Perpetual Chess Podcast

This week I got the chance to catch up with author, trainer and Chessable author, GM Eugene Perelshteyn. We begin by discussing a recent online cheating controversy. An anonymous account was banned from Chess.com after beating GM Daniel Naroditsky in an online bullet match using only the “Meadow Hay” Gambit. Is this gambit so bad that it makes cheating likely? This controversy served as a springboard to discuss both online cheating and dodgy gambits. Eugene has recently released a course “Every Gambit Refuted” so he also shared general advice on how to react when you face an unknown gambit. These days, gambits can be particularly dangerous, as creators like IM Eric Rosen and GothamChess teach their audiences tricky openings. Finally, Eugene and I discuss some issues from the world of professional chess, including a lack of affordable opportunities to compete for the non-elite, the FIDE Candidates (which Eugene attended) and “the great eval bar debate.” Eugene is always insightful and it was great to catch up with him!  Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! It could be a Stan Lee comic. Tragic origin, raised in a nearly-hostile orphanage, forced to learn the world's ropes on her own, and constantly fighting off the effects of tranquilizers, Beth Harmon discovers that she has a superpower: she's REALLY good at chess. The Queen's Gambit tees up tons of great themes about a young woman in the 1950's and 60's making her way in a man's world, navigating relationships, and wrestling with addiction. Is she more than her analytical powers? Can she stand against a Russian grandmaster backed by a chess establishment that has the advantage of decades of experience over her? And along the way, is romance a game she's fated to lose? Gambits are a kind of offer in chess: lots of excitement and the possibility of victory, but with a lot more risk along the way, if you dare to take them on instead of playing it safe in the duller, familiar lines. Turns out that Beth Harmon has a chance to play the Gambit we all get offered: to love and be loved in the broken world, and find patterns of victory in its midst nonetheless.

When it comes to starting conversations, it's really hit or miss. If you talk about football with a woman, more than likely they will be clueless. I was one-dimension about 11 years ago because I was so involved with sports while living in America that I couldn't initiate conversations with anyone on other topics. We're finally here! Conversation gambits! This is going to be a two-part podcast with lots of fire, so you better prepare yourself. How do you normally start conversations with someone you don't know? Are you limited to subjects? For example, from childhood to about 2012, I was limited to only sports. So, it was extremely difficult to speak to anyone outside of sports, resulting in failed conversations. If I look at the people I was around from 2006-2011, they only knew about sports...so then my entire world was very small. It wasn't until I lived in Australia when I had the opportunity to start speaking about my travels. However, in Las Vegas, the majority of people NEVER travel outside the city, let alone the country. So it had become increasingly difficult to start conversations because they became jealous when I told them about my travels. Don't let others minimize your success because of their narrow-mindedness. It wasn't until my battles out here in Thailand, how I overcame everything, and my entrepreneurial success when I developed ideas in ALL subject areas that I became a phenomenal conversationalist. Here’s a couple of sentences ripped from the headlines recently: It is free to be tested for COVID-19 in the US, but the cost of treatment can be shocking. Even if you’re insured, the deductible and co-pay can add up to several thousand dollars. And if you’re uninsured, the financial toll is even uglier. That’s what Boston resident Danni Askini learned when she got a $34,927 bill after receiving treatment in a local emergency room for COVID. That’s from Time magazine. Episode 260 of the show was about the Shkreli Awards and the worst profiteering in health care. The judges of the Shkreli Awards bucketed the winners into a few categories. One of the categories of “winners” was called Schizophrenic Compartmentalization, and this schizophrenic behavior seemed super applicable to hospitals this past year. This schizophrenic compartmentalization happens when the person who wrote the mission statement and probably doctors and nurses are on a totally different planet than the billing department. So, I wanted to take a look at a couple of mission statements just as a reference point, including the mission statements of the hospitals that won Shkreli Awards in the Schizophrenic Compartmentalization category.  Luckily, there is a Web page where hospital mission statements are all collected in one place, so I did not need to travel far to confirm that they are all very, very similar—something along the lines of treat patients with compassion, be a productive member of the community, ease suffering, and give the highest value to all concerned. That’s very noble and what I would expect a hospital, honestly, to be striving toward.  Here’s the thing, though. This is what the whole hospital is supposed to be doing. I didn’t find one mission statement that said everybody except the finance team is subject to this mission statement. Those guys over there? They have their own. In this health care podcast, I speak with Doug Aldeen. Doug is an attorney. He is generally hired by self-insured employers. He has dealt with hospital finance teams for two decades, so he is the perfect person to dig into the delta between the hospital’s mission statement and the finance team’s mission statement. This is what we talk about in this podcast. Doug also offers up some solutions at the micro and the macro level. One vocabulary word before we get started: RBP is otherwise known as reference-based pricing. This means when a health plan, usually a self-insured employer’s health plan, says that they’re going to pay for health care services based on usually the Medicare rate. So, they’ll pay, like, 1.5 times or 2 times what Medicare pays, for example. Do I want to be a little bit sensitive right about now to some of the hospitals that are struggling under the weight of COVID and the shutdowns that have been transpiring across the country? Yeah, I do. At the same time, there is absolutely no excuse to take advantage of those that you claim to serve. There’s a big delta between charging a fair price and wrenching dollar bills out of the sweaty hands of hard-working Americans just because you can. You can learn more by emailing Doug at doug@health-attorney.net or following him on LinkedIn.  Doug Aldeen is an Austin, Texas–based health care and Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) attorney who recently served as ERISA counsel on behalf of the Berkeley Research Group in New York City to the $7.7 billion May 2016 acquisition of Multiplan and its medical bill repricing product Data iSight by the private equity firm Hellman and Friedman. Since 1997, he has represented reference-based pricing organizations, a bundled payment software platform, PPO networks, medium to small self-funded plans, third-party administrators, and provider-sponsored health maintenance organizations in various capacities, including Herdrich v. Pegram, which was argued before the US Supreme Court in 2001. Moreover, he serves as a resource to national news organizations regarding issues on health care and as a consultant with the Governmental Relations Committee at the Self-Insurance Institute of America in Washington, DC, and as an adviser to RIP Medical Debt, which has abolished over $1.2 billion in medical debt. Look closely at just about any successful enterprise and you’ll see gambits they made along the way — small bets on an unclear future that, however unlikely, would produce outsized gains if they paid off. Gambit comes from the Italian gambetto, “tripping up.” It’s a device, action or opening remark, usually with some risk, that’s calculated to gain a future advantage. When you make an opening move, offer something, or start a conversation with something that seems self-sacrificing but is really a ploy for a later advantage — that’s a gambit. In chess it’s when you sacrifice a pawn in your opening move to put yourself in a position for a future move. When a gambit doesn’t work (which is usually the case), you end up losing a pawn and moving on. When a “gambit” results in losing your queen or king — that’s not a gambit. So it’s important to be able to tell what initiatives are gambits and follow rules to ensure you don’t sink the ship in pursuit of them. Fundamental asymmetry In my favorite of Nassim Taleb’s books, Antifragile, he writes about “fundamental asymmetry,” which happens when risks and rewards are out of balance. He offers the example of a dinner party invitation: If you go, the worst-case scenario is that the food and company are lousy and you waste a few hours; and the best-case scenario is that you meet your future wife. When you go to the dinner party to expand the boundaries of what you know to be possible (in this case, in your love life) — that’s a gambit. Bullet, bullet, cannonball In his follow-up to Good to Great, author Jim Collins advises companies to “fire bullets, then cannonballs.” Bullets are like gambits: low-cost, low-risk, low-distraction experiments to figure out what will work. According to Collins, companies gain a line of sight by taking small shots. Once they have a calibrated line of sight (empirical validation of their test), they fire the cannonball: They concentrate resources into one big bet. Collins uses Apple as an example: There was iTunes for Mac, then the iPod, then the iTunes music store. Bullet, bullet, bullet. Then came the cannonball: the iPhone. That’s not quite right, though. I see them all as bullets: Apple achieved an improved position with the iPod and iTunes and fired more bullets in that direction, producing the iPhone. We just happen to remember the bullets that worked — and forget about the other 50+ products Apple launched between the iPod (2001) and iPhone (2007). We forget about Xserve. Infinite game In The Infinite Game, Simon Sinek writes about approaching business like there are no boundaries. Whatever map you’re holding is far too limited, because things are changing and expanding in ways that you don’t understand.  You’ve got to continually explore the boundaries of what’s possible. If you aren’t constantly looking around to see where those edges are, you’ll find yourself stuck in a very small space that you’ve imagined. Meanwhile, people around you will be operating in a different world without the artificial constraints you place on yourself. Gambits, by definition, are unlikely to succeed. But they will improve your map of the territory and help you get oriented. Gambit - Feedback - Iterate  Successful companies take gambits to get a basic map of the territory. Once they have the map, then they iterate. For example, Apple produced 24 versions of the iPod; so far they’ve built 25 versions of the iPhone. The gambit is for invention and understanding. Iteration happens once you figure out how to capture the value of the market. It requires organizational discipline. It’s tinkering, making something better within a roughly known context. At Royalty Exchange, we don’t really know what our product or marketplace will look like in the long term, but we know much more than we did four years ago because of the gambits we’ve taken. We’ve tested ideas knowing they’ll likely fail. Even when they “fail,” we learn something. When they work, they change the trajectory of our business. I think of every one of our hires as a gambit — each time we’re not fully sure where it will go. Growth hacking vs. gambits Gambits and growth hacking can look alike because they are similar in some ways. But they are different. Similarities: Look for new ways to grow. Put out ideas or products, get feedback, and adjust.  Differences: Growth hacking is mostly direct response marketing — it’s about optimization.  Gambits are non-linear bets designed to discover what might be possible. Growth hacking answers: How do we sell this?  A gambit invents the future. Explore — but don’t overreach The key is making gambits work is twofold:  1) Gambits are exploratory. They should expand the overton window, to shed light on what’s possible. When they work, gambits provide a set of keys that might unlock that future. 2) Never overreach. Never bet the farm. You build great companies by taking smart gambits and creating the environment for success. You’re not putting the company on the line with moonshot attempts. Rather, find the smallest step you can take to start exploring some new areas. When calculating the cost of the undertaking, remember it’s the actual dollar cost and the time and energy it takes you. If you can move fast on a low-risk gambit, often it’s worth it.  Create a hypothesis about the future — then test it Create a hypothesis about the way the future might be, and then test it. Ask yourself: “What is the smallest thing I can do to test my hypothesis?” A gambit can be a small advertising campaign to see what customers respond to, or a new hire in an area your company hasn’t explored before. Try something small and then look for a signal. One of the best features of a gambit is that you get feedback very quickly. You put something small out and then you essentially look for any type of positive validation you can find.  If you put out a small advertising campaign, are people talking about your company? If you made a new hire, are they changing the dynamic of your team in any noticeable way? If there’s no signal coming back, then the lack of signal is in itself negative feedback. Either the idea was bad or the execution was bad. In either case, it’s time to readjust and make your next move.

That's right, for once Blake is playing the older game, and to keep up with this opposite-world trope it's one Sean has actually played before. What follows is a lengthy discussion about the merits (or lack thereof) of various Final Fantasy battle systems, how much the world of video games has changed with social distancing in full force, and when exactly Polygon stopped sucking so much.

In this penultimate DTM podcast Peter talks to one of his colleagues at Delft, Professor Matthijs van Dyke. Matthijs is a Professor of Practice and co-author of the well-known Vision in Product Development (ViP) method. Matthijs is not only an educator though. His main job is working at the design business he co-founded: Reframing Studio in Amsterdam, where he has built up considerable expertise in design working with major clients and organisations. In the podcast Matthijs reflects on his changing role in the business, what his core expertise is, and why he doesn’t think that trying to categorise people into different levels of expertise is useful. Following the interview Peter and Mieke discuss what they think about design expertise, pulling out some key themes from the interview with Matthijs. Total running time is 35 minutes.Peter introduces a book by Bryan Lawson and Kees Dorst called Design Expertise (also mentioned in the Assignment 2 description) which gives an overview of how designers develop across many different disciplines. There are some excellent case studies of how top designers work – a recommended read. The different ‘levels of design expertise’ that the book quotes is from a paper by Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus called Expertise in Realworld Contexts which is an insightful look at why it is difficult (or impossible) to encode human expertise into computer code. Bryan Lawson has written much about the design process and the expertise of designers, and Mieke mentions one of his papers about how designers make sense of new situations through their experience: Schemata, Gambits and Precedent: Some Factors in Design Expertise.Peter mentions a bestselling book by Malcolm Gladwell called Outliers: The Story of Success, which amongst other things discusses the idea that becoming an expert ‘simply’ takes 10,000 hours. Finally if you want to follow up on the cooking documentary that Peter mentions, ‘Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat’, it is currently playing on Netflix.

Turn to Page 288, The Man With Two Faces. Today’s lesson is called Gambits and Sacrifices The chapter starts with Quirrell revealing himself as the enemy. He quickly subdues Harry, tells him how he came to become a follower of Voldemort, and then returns to the last obstacle between him and the Sorcerer’s Stone: the Mirror of Erised. Harry, trying to prevent Quirrell from completing his mission, realizes that he should be able to see where the stone is hidden, if he looks in the mirror. As he tries to stealthily do so, a horrible voice suggests to Quirrell to make Harry look in the mirror. Harry does so, and sees himself putting the Stone in his pocket when, to his surprise, the Stone actually appears in that pocket. The voice demands to face Harry directly, after realizing Harry was lying about not knowing where the Stone was. Voldemort is revealed to be subsisting in Quirrell’s body, and orders Quirrell to attack Harry and take the Stone. Quirrell cannot bear to touch Harry, however, and Harry attempts to hold onto him, despite searing pain. Harry awakes in the hospital wing to find Dumbledore watching over him. The two discuss the events surrounding the Stone and some details of Harry’s past. Later, a distraught Hagrid gifts Harry a photo album of his parents. Finally, Harry recovers enough to go to the End-of-year-feast, where Dumbledore grants Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville enough points to have Gryffindor win the House Cup. Harry’s first year at Hogwarts ends, and he meets with his family on Platform 9 ¾. Music: Magical Dirt by Sir Cubworth #MagicalTheory #HarryPotter #podcast #WizardPhD ✨Like the podcast? Ultima Final Fantasy | The Ultimate Final Fantasy Podcast

Nasir Gebelli       By Kaleb Schweiss Nasir Gebelli was a programmer for Square Enix. He was part of Square’s A-Team, along with Nobou Uematsu and Yoshitaka Amano to create Final Fantasy. But that’s not the first project Nasir took on at Square, nor was it his first programming job.   Nasir was born in Iran, and later moved to the US to study computer science. In 1980, he started a company called Sirius Software with a guy named Jerry Jewell. Gebelli made numerous strides within Sirius, including creating advanced graphics techniques for the Apple II. His first project was a program called EasyDraw; a logo and character creation program that he would use for his later games. It was with Sirius that Gibelli developed a reputation for quickly producing games. He would program as many as twelve games a year. One in particular, Gorgo, ended up selling around 23,000 copies; making it one of the best selling computer games in the early 80’s.   In 1981, Gebelli left Sirius to establish his own software company named Gebelli Software. He released  a few successful games, but by 1983, his games were becoming notoriously bad according to Softalk, a magazine focusing on computers and games. The Video Game Crash of 1983 would lead Gebelli’s company in shambles, and he closed his doors.   After Gebelli Software went belly up, Nasir did what any sensible businessman would do. He traveled the world for a few years. He would eventually resurface in 1986 when he went to visit a friend, Doug Carlston who owns Broderbund. This was the company who originally did the Carmen Sandiego games. Calrlston told Gebelli about the rising power of the NES, and suggested that Nasir should program for it. Gebelli was interested, and travelled with Doug to Japan; where he would meet with Nintendo and Square. Nintendo would ultimately be uninterested in Gebelli, but Square, and especially The Gutch, were aware of his reputation and excited to have him join the team. His joining of Square eventually let to the separation of Square from the parent company Denyuusha.   Gebelli’s first game with Square would be 3-D WorldRunner for the NES. THis was a forward scrolling third person action game. It was one of the first stereoscopic 3D games, which gives the game a more 3D feel. Gibelli would then program Rad Racer, and it’s sequel later in 1990.   And now, now that he has a few games under his belt, Gebelli, Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Amano began to produce Final Fantasy, which would later be released in 1987. Final Fantasy featured numerous unique features such as the character creation system, classes, and the ever famous battle system. Gebelli and team didn’t miss a beat, and went on to create Final Fantasy II. This game introduced emotional story lines, and much more tragic events. The game also replaced traditional leveling with the activity based progression system, which would later go on to influence the SaGa and Grandia series, FF IV, and The Elder Scrolls series. Final Fantasy II also introduced an innovative dialogue system where key words would be memorized and used during conversations with NPC’s. Next comes Final Fantasy III, which came out in 1990. This game introduced the ever beloved job class system. Midway through the development of both Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III, Gebelli was forced to return to Sacramento, California due to an expired work visa. The rest of the staff followed him to Sacramento to finish producing the games.   Gibelli would take another long break before returning to work on Secret of Mana, which is the second in the Mana series, released in 1993. Secret of Mana was more of an action role playing game, and included a cooperative multiplayer mode. The game was initially going to be one of the launching titles on the SNES CD, but was later altered to a cartridge due to the SNES CD being dropped. This game received critical acclaim, mainly for its real time battle system, innovative co op gameplay, in which second and third players could join in and drop out of the game at any time, and the customizable AI settings for computer controlled allies…. GAMBITS!!!! After Secret of Mana, Gibelli basically retired from royalties from Square and, you guessed it, traveled the world. He would later attend John Romero’s, co founder of ID Software, Apple II reunion in Dallas. Romero credited Gebelli as a major influence on his career. Gebelli lives in Sacramento, and remains good friends with Hironobu Sakaguchi.   REMIX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uarsKpKN68A
