Even though climate change may be a fact of life today and especially moving forward, there aren't many books or stories that make a changing climate part of a fictionalized story. Retired environmental lawyer and now novelist, Joel Burcat has done just that, weaving a love story, self-reflection, ambition and a few twists into his new book Reap the Wind. On The Spark Wednesday, Burcat said his four books have all been inspired by his work as and environmental and energy lawyer,"My first one was called Drink To Every Beast. And that is a novel about dumping hazardous waste in the Susquehanna River. My second novel, Amid Rage, is about a coal mine permit battle. And my third novel, Strange Fire, is about fracking. So when it came time for me to write a new novel, it was just natural that I would write a novel about climate change. Plus, climate change really is the existential issue of our time. And I really felt that I wanted to do what I'd done in my previous novels, which was to educate people gently the way I like to do that, about climate change through fiction." Reap the Wind includes a debate about climate change through the mouths of the characters. Burcat described the books' plot,"Reap the Wind is, The Perfect Storm meets The Firm. So we all remember both the book and the movie. The Perfect Storm about the most horrific, storm ever to hit the northeast, happened about 20 years ago. And The Firm, of course, is John Grisham's great novel about a law firm. That is a very, very dangerous place to work. And, my story is kind of, what would happen if those two stories came together? So, the basic premise of my story is that a young lawyer who is named Josh Goldberg is sitting in his firm's seminar that they're putting on down in Houston, Texas. Bored out of his mind. He just wants to go visit with his girlfriend who's up in a room, and outside is a raging hurricane. And, unfortunately, what happens? She is eight months pregnant and decides ultimately that she's going to head back to Philadelphia, which is where they're from. He has to stay because he's on the program for the next morning. So she gets on an airplane and starts flying off to Philadelphia, only to be diverted to Cincinnati and then ultimately to end up in the hospital. So I can tell you that much without giving too much away of the story, the the important thing is, and this is really what the story is all about, is he decides that he's got to be with his girlfriend, Kiesha Jones. He's got to be with her, because she may be having their baby. She's over eight months pregnant. She may be having their baby, and he wants to be there. But nobody is flying. Nobody. There are no trains running. There's no nothing. He ultimately is able to rent a Lincoln town car from his friend, the limo driver, and he and his best friend, Geoff Roberts are planning on driving up to Cincinnati together. And at the last moment, his boss, Diane Scanlon, who is a great antagonist decides to come along with them. I tried to make her as evil and vicious as I could. So it's it's kind of the the buddy trip from hell." Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“What if the gospel writers intended it not to be historical fact? What if it was meant to be a story?” These are the questions posed by author Geoff Roberts (now deceased) in his book, The True Origins of Jesus: The Myth Behind the Man. In this episode Rev. Carol talks about these ideas with her guests, Colm Holland and Dean Wilkinson. Colm was featured in The Spiritual Forum podcast episodes 121 & 122. He is the publisher of the global bestseller The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and the author of the Amazon #1 bestseller The Secret of the Alchemist. On matters of faith and religion, Colm takes a Jungian view where the power lies in myth and the many ways unconditional love effects change for good. He identifies as an “alchemistic Christian.” Dean Wilkinson is an industry disrupter and lifelong learner. He is trained in spiritual direction, leadership, and business. Having spent much of his life in all levels of church service and leadership, Dean experienced a completely new and different Bible when he read it “for the first time” without the lens of prior teaching. He now encourages people to be open to all that Christ can be and to not abandon their faith because they think they need to take the bible literally. Colm is the editor of the book, The True Origins of Jesus: The Myth Behind the Man, and Dean wrote the forward. This was a lively conversation and these are some of the topics we discussed: We read the Bible as if we already know, not with fresh eyes There are hidden truths in the Bible that we don't see when we look at it literally There were multiple competing religions during the emergence of Christianity Gnosticism was a dominant faith in the early Christian years; the Gnostics view was divinity was not about believing in an external deity, but finding the God within Myth gives shape to chaos - the human psyche concretizes myth There is a similarity between Beatitudes, gospel stories and Buddhist teachings – content, verse and pentameter Carl Jung was concerned about Christianity being about sinlessness and not the full spectrum of humanity What is the definition of Christianity? There is a diaspora of agony for those who have rejected the literal but also the divine You have to go to the darkest places to find God – not just the light Religion is meant to bind us together Unity churches emphasize the inner Christ/Divine spark, do not interpret the Bible literally and welcome everyone! In creating Outseta, Geoff was able to solve a hefty amount of business' problems. All SaaS or membership businesses need the same fundamental technological tools: a billing system, a CRM for prospecting customer data, and marketing tools to communicate with customers. Outseta is the only company bringing all of these tools together under one platform. Geoff compares it to the way Shopify works for e-commerce, and just like a lot of the world's best ideas, Outseta was born out of personal experience and agitation towards the complexities of building a company which needed all of these tools. You Don't Need to Know Everything About SaaS to be SuccessfulDespite developing such an ingenious SaaS platform, Geoff reveals that he didn't create Outseta due to any real attachment to SaaS, rather it was out of his love for startups and their evolution. He is also responsible for almost everything at Outseta apart from developing the tools themselves: sales, support, marketing, and internal operations. But how? He claims that his writing degree was probably one of the most beneficial things to happen to him. And yet, despite not having any inherent connection to the SaaS industry, he has been able to make waves and offer a revolutionary, groundbreaking platform for any startup who needs it!Share Your Entrepreneurial Journey into SaaSGeoff recommends that, when starting your SaaS business, share your entrepreneurial journey with the world. It can be incredibly beneficial to show off to everyone how much you've grown. This can develop a sense of trust between yourself and potential new clients and customers. Not only that, but it is naturally interesting to see how a business grows over time. It's like watching evolution in real time.“This is not something I expected going in, but a huge part of our customer acquisition strategy is simply sharing our own entrepreneurial journey. I know that a lot of other founders do that; we're certainly not the first company to do so, but I think it actually worked for us as an acquisition strategy because we sell our product to other founders. Just by sharing our own journey, founders tend to be interested in that kind of stuff.”The Ruthlessness of Prioritization With the sheer quantity of tools that Outseta uses, they had to figure out which aspects to prioritize amidst its creation. In order to do this, they had to look at what it was that all subscription and membership SaaS services use and where they would focus their energies. When beginning your startup, you will have to ruthlessly prioritize your work. Some ideas simply won't make the cut or, at the very least, won't get as much attention as others. But this is okay, just make sure you are prioritizing the right things.Once a Developer, Always a DeveloperGeoff acknowledges that for the first few years of Outseta's existence, they were trying to sell to too much of a niche audience. Instead of trying to sell to business founders, they were selling to founders who were also developers. So, when the time came to pitch to them, they would often just make the tools themselves. This isn't logical, but it is rational, and both parties involved know this; once you're a developer, you can't shed that programmed, coded skin.Know who you're pitching to—a niche audience is good, vital even, but if it's too niche then you may run into some problems.“The hard truth was we were trying to change the predominant behavior of developers. I would have a lot of conversations with developers where I would say ‘It's not the best use of your time to spend all of this time integrating these tools. Why don't you focus your time on building your product rather than building all these tools.' And they would nod and say, ‘That makes a completely logical sense,' and then they would go and build it anyway. It's just what they're accustomed to, even if it didn't make the most logical sense.”Sometimes, the Product Just Isn't Good Enough YetYou could have the best ever idea for a product, but you need to be able to acknowledge that you won't always get it to perfection right away. It'll take time, and there may even be moments when you think it's over, but it doesn't mean it is. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is face the hard truth and think about the way you can improve and be better in order to grow.

Hello and welcome back to the Multidimensional Evolution Podcast with me Kim McCaul. After a hiatus I am looking forward to bringing you some more interesting conversation in 2023. Episode 54 will kick the year off with a returning guest in Colm Holland. I spoke with Colm on episode 38 in 2020 about his books The Secret of the Alchemist. If you listened to that episode you may recall that I had some hesitation about speaking with Colm then because of my misgivings about Christianity, a religion that shaped Colm's early life and I found still echoed in his book. In the end I was glad to have had a really interesting conversation with Colm about his fascinating life trajectory and his move from church based Christianity to the study of alchemy and Jungian psychology to guide his life path. It seems only fitting that Colm has now introduced me to a book he has edited on behalf of the deceased author Geoff Roberts that questions the very foundations of the Christian origin story. No matter where you stand on the story of Jesus - whether you believe in the historical character, believe that there is a spiritual Christ, agree with Geoff Robert's that the entire story was plagiarised from other existing stories or something in-between. There is no denying that few narratives have shaped human history and consciousness as dramatically as the story of Christianity. Even if you are an atheist, a Muslim or a Buddhist, in one way or another Christianity will have impacted you. Our calendars and global festivities are shaped around alleged life events of Jesus Christ and the world's pre-eminent super power prides itself on being a “Christian nation”, a concept that clearly means different things to different people. So I think understanding it's historic origins is an extremely valuable pursuit. One question I find intriguing is why it is Jesus of Nazareth and not someone like his much better documented contemporary Apollonius of Tyana who has ended up becoming the figure head for this world defining cult? What is it about this story that has led it to shape the minds and cultures of billions of consciousnesses over the past 2 millennia? Could it be true that our history has been shaped entirely by a fiction? This is the question we explore in this conversation. And just a note on something I omitted to clarify during the interview. Colm occasionally references Q. Because in recent years the letter Q has come to be associated in much public discourse with the Qanon movement, it is worth pointing out that in biblical studies the letter Q is derived from the German word Quelle for source, ie it relates to the original source of information. Having clarified that it is also fun to point out that the foundations of Christianity and Qanon actually share quite a few qualitative parallels, but that is a whole other topic. TruthSeekah is joined by Colm Holland & Dean Wilkinson as they discuss their new book The True Origins of Jesus: The myth behind the man. If Jesus is indeed a myth, then what does that mean for millions of Christians around the world? In recent years, there has been a growing trend among some individuals to attempt to prove that Jesus of Nazareth was nothing more than a myth. These individuals argue that the stories of Jesus' life and teachings were simply invented by early Christians as a means of promoting their beliefs and gaining converts. While this may seem like a logical conclusion on the surface, it ultimately fails to take into account the deeper spiritual significance of the Christian faith. The fact is, the idea that Jesus was only a myth actually makes Christianity all the more valid, not less. You see, the stories of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection are not simply fairy tales invented to explain away the mysteries of the world. They are, rather, powerful and profound symbolic narratives that reveal deep truths about the human condition. For example, the story of Jesus' crucifixion can be understood as a symbol for the sacrifices that each of us must make in order to achieve true spiritual growth and transcendence. By willingly suffering and dying for the sake of others, Jesus teaches us that true strength and nobility come from humility, selflessness, and sacrifice.Similarly, the story of Jesus' resurrection can be understood as a symbol for the power of the human spirit to transcend death and limitations. By rising from the dead, Jesus reminds us that true life lies not in our physical bodies, but in the eternal, unchanging essence of our being. In this way, the idea that Jesus was only a myth only serves to strengthen the spiritual power of Christianity. For those of us who understand and embrace the symbolic meaning behind these stories, the fact that they may not be literal historical events is irrelevant. In conclusion, the attempt to prove that Jesus was only a myth is a futile and ultimately meaningless endeavor. The stories of Jesus' life and teachings are powerful symbols that reveal deep truths about the human condition and the nature of existence. And, as such, they are more true and meaningful than any literal historical account could ever be.‘The True Origins of Jesus by Geoff Roberts, will save you years of research by giving the answers your inquiring mind is thirsting for. It bridges the gap between truth and myth, with a common sense that is difficult to find these days in discourses about Jesus.' Dean Wilkinson, Founder of Epochwork.com.With all the evidence compiled in this book, including some which has only come to light relatively recently, you can draw your own conclusions from a story which will look very different to the one you learned at school. Return guest Colm Holland and Dean Wilkinson are the editors of the 2023 re-release of The True Origins of Jesus by Geoff Roberts, a nearly-obscure work of knowledge and research into the myth and mystery of Jesus of Nazareth. With all the evidence compiled in this book, including some which has only come to light relatively recently, you can draw your own conclusions from a Bible story which will look very different to the one you learned at school or church. Was Jesus Christ a mythical figure who was never intended by the early founders of the religion to be a walking, talking historical person? By examining the earliest historical sources referred to in this book with an open mind, you will be free to decide who Jesus is for you today and perhaps find your own version of Christianity that is just as much the ‘truth' as any other. Get access to Hard Knock SaaS here: https://www.hardknocksaas.com/For those who know, I'm in the process of building up my second bootstrapped SaaS (first one was recently acquired). Although I'm still relatively early in the process, I've been thinking about future tools and apps to run the business. This is where I stumbled on Outseta.Outseta is an all-in-one software that combines all of the fundamental and necessary tools to run a SaaS company - payment processing, CRM, email marketing and customer support.I thought the product looked great and sounded extremely valuable to new SaaS companies, so I reached out to Geoff Roberts, one of the founders. This was a really fun, open and transparent conversation. Anyone running a SaaS startup will find this extremely valuable. We covered several topics, including:- The struggles and grind in the first years of growing Outseta- How Outseta got it's first 100 clients- The difficulties of marketing a product that can serve a broad audience- The fundamental tools that every SaaS company requires to operate- How Outseta operates with zero sales reps or support reps- Why Outseta is okay sacrificing growth to run a lean and profitable businessLearn more about Outseta here: https://www.outseta.com/Follow Geoff on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GeoffTRoberts
Geoff Roberts of Outseta chats with Benedikt and Benedicte about Outseta, their uncommon operating and compensation model, and more. Outseta Justin Welsh SDR Nation Follow Geoff on Twitter While there are a lot of best in class tools out there, more often than not, early stage businesses only need basic functionalities to get things done.Coming from the same experience, Geoff and Dimitris used it to build Outseta, an all-in-one tech stack (that includes payments, authentications, CRM, and email) for SaaS and membership style businesses. Their tool helps founders focus more of their time on building the product instead of spending time integrating several different tools before launching their business.Geoff, Benedicte, and Benedikt talk about how they attracted both the technical and non-technical audience, how he juggles work and dad duties, and more!
