Episode Summary: In this thought-provoking episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the concerning trend of declining life expectancy in the USA and the rising incidence of chronic diseases among children. Drawing on her extensive knowledge and passion for functional health, she dissects the complex web of healthcare spending, lifestyle choices, and pharmaceutical industry dynamics. Dr. Hieshetter ardently discusses the critically acclaimed weight-loss drug, Ozempic, uncovering its potential risks, side effects, and the alarming association with serious chronic diseases as reported by the Journal of American Medical Association. The episode reveals a staggering 80% of Americans' desire to lose weight, the financial burden of the drug, and the troubling implications of its usage on mental health. Dr. Hieshetter infuses the narrative with a strong appeal for individual responsibility towards health and challenges the nutritional guidelines and spending policies that are contributing to the national obesity crisis. Key Takeaways: The life expectancy in the U.S. is declining, along with a high prevalence of chronic diseases among children, raising critical questions about the nation's health and healthcare system. Ozempic, a weight loss drug, is linked to several serious health conditions, yet is widely desired for its promise of weight loss, indicating a troubling dependence. Dr. Hieshetter criticizes the hidden political and economic agendas pushing unhealthy dietary standards, such as the permissibility of high sugar intake for very young children. Lifestyle choices, including food and exercise, are fundamental to improving health outcomes, and Dr. Hieshetter emphasizes natural ways to maintain well-being over pharmaceutical solutions. The episode ends on an empowering note, with encouragement towards self-love, dietary changes, and physical activity to lead a healthier, happier life. In today's episode, we will explore research on how our nutritional environment directly influences the genetics of PCOS. We'll discuss how these factors interact, either worsening the condition or, if we strategically use nutrition to support PCOS, potentially reversing its effects and balancing hormonal levels. Without further ado, let's delve into the topic. In this research review episode, we'll be looking at a study titled "Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load Estimates in the Dietary Approach of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" by Mata, Pashu, et al offering valuable insights into the correlation between nutrition and PCOS. Let's dive in!The Latest Research: Glycemic Index and PCOSOur body's delicate balance of glucose and insulin is influenced by our dietary choices. High carbohydrate diets, especially rich in processed carbs and sugars, can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, triggering insulin resistance. We'll discuss what the research considers the significance of glycemic index and glycemic load in this context, focusing on the impact on insulin and androgen levels.Impact of Glycemic Index on PCOS This article shares how excess weight, particularly abdominal fat, plays a role in inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance, influencing the symptoms of PCOS and how this is related to the glycemic index of the foods consumed. This article also discusses how lowering glycemic index through dietary choices can contribute to reducing excess weight and improving body composition.Glycemic Index Strategies for ImprovementTo help you get started on understanding how foods affect your body, I will recommend tools and resources as well as discuss the limitations of lab tests for identifying and monitoring the insulin effect and metabolic health for women with PCOS. SUMMARY In this podcast, Michael Pierce talks about the Glycemic Index and how it can be used as a strategy for weight loss. He advises listeners to measure their progress and to set goals that they can realistically achieve. He also discusses how the mind responds to numbers and how this can be used to motivate oneself. The conversation discuss the fact that most diets fail and the reasons why. The main reason is that people are not able to stick to the diet long term. The conversation also offers some advice on how to be successful with a weight loss strategy. They suggest finding a strategy that is simple and easy to follow. The speaker discusses the problem of obesity in the United States, which has become an epidemic. They note that nearly 60% of the population is overweight, and nearly 25% is obese. This weight problem is causing serious health problems, such as type two diabetes, which was once only seen in older adults but is now being seen in schoolchildren as young as eight or nine. The speaker argues that there is a sensible approach to weight loss that can be followed for a lifetime, and that this is not a diet but a weight management system. The glycemic index is a system that rates foods according to how quickly they are converted into glucose by the body. Foods that rate high on the glycemic index cause blood sugar levels to spike rapidly and then crash soon afterwards, leading to hunger and fatigue. This can eventually lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The glycemic index can help people lose weight by choosing foods that promote a slow, moderate rise in blood sugar levels. In this book, you will learn about the glycemic index and how it can help you lose weight, as well as other important information about carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. From this info, we gain a better understanding of how to unlock the door to stored fat and not only burning it off, but using it as a form of energy! The Glycemic Load equation: Take the food's Glycemic Index (GI) number which can be found on this downloadable PDF Multiply the GI by the total amount of Carbohydrates IN A SERVING (check nutritional label for this number) of the food you are wanting to eat. If the total carbs indicated in a serving are 12g and you are eating 2 servings worth, be sure to double the 12g to 24g. Conversely, if you're consuming half of the serving size you would use 6g. GL or Glycemic Load is the number of carbohydrates in specific food and it affects the blood sugar. When reading the labels, also look at the sugar levels and avoid the ones that have a high glycemic load. • GI or Glycemic Index: less than 55 Low, 56-69 Moderate and greater than 70 High • GL or Glycemic Load: less than 10 Low, 10-20 Moderate and greater than 20 High Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.
