15-Time Emmy Winner Jimmy Roberts joins Dan Hesse to share life lessons on how athletes break out of slumps

In this episode, THE MENTORS RADIO Host Dan Hesse talks with Jimmy Roberts, a 15-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and writer for ESPN and ABC Sports, about how athletes break out of slumps. Jimmy Roberts has had what most people would think of as an interesting run. During a 30-year career in network television, he has spoken at the United Nations, and interviewed a convicted murderer behind the walls of Attica State Penitentiary. He has traveled with the heavyweight boxing champion to meetings with Nelson Mandela in Soweto and the Pope at the Vatican … and had dinner at the White House with the president of the United States. That said, he is primarily known as a sports reporter who has chronicled 19 Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and, of course golf, where he has covered more than 70 major championships, 15 Ryder Cups, and since 2012 has been the signature voice of Augusta National's acclaimed digital platform MASTERS.COM. Roberts has earned numerous distinctions, including a Golf Writers Association of America award, The Metropolitan Golf Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Lincoln Werden Journalism medal. He is also a prolific writer. For two decades Roberts has been the featured back page columnist for Met Golfer (NY) Magazine. His most recent book, the bestseller “NO ONE WINS ALONE” (Simon & Schuster,) written in 2021 with hockey legend Mark Messier, discusses motivation and performance lessons from one of professional sports greatest leaders. In 2009, Harper Collins published his first book, Breaking the Slump, which tells the story of how some of the best golfers to ever play the game - as well as one former president and one Olympic gold medalist - dug themselves out of career-threatening dry spells. The book was critically praised in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. “Jimmy Roberts has always been a wonderful storyteller, touching the hearts and challenging the minds of viewers,” said legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Roberts often speaks about the book, which he understands has a universality to it: “As golfers, we're all really the same. There are two types of us in this world; those who've had a slump, and those who are going to have (at least) one. And it's a matter of degree. When Jack Nicklaus struggles, he loses the ball to the left. When I struggle, I just… lose the ball.” Roberts also came to realize in writing this book - ostensibly about golf - that it really was something that had nothing to do with the game; it was a book about how successful people handled adversity. For the last 24 years, Roberts has been a fixture on NBC, where this summer he will report from the Paris Olympic Games. Because until we stop creating from the past, projecting into future, we're going to be in this wheel house and we're never going to change." - Pavel Stuchlik The Allostatic Load in Life "You wake up in the morning and let's say you have mold in your house, a virus running in your body, and your relationship doesn't work. Think about it as 20% down, 20% down, 20% down. And maybe you're left with 40% to tackle this life. Imagine that you wake up every day and you're already with these obstacles, it's going to be a tough journey through self-transformation because you're going to have to face all this before you can move from that." - Pavel Stuchlik Are EMFs Toxic? "Think about EMFs as toxins. If you take enough toxins, it will kill you. And that's what Dr. Mercola is warning about that the EMFs are the new cigarettes and it's worse because you can't see it. With cigarettes you can see the smog but with EMFs you cannot." - Pavel Stuchlik The Key to Manifesting "You got to trust. It will take shorter and shorter for the manifestation. That's the light speed. At the beginning, if you live very dense life, it's going to take a little bit longer to pick up. But don't break the trust, stay in the light, continue washing yourself with it." - Pavel Stuchlik Links From Today's Show  NOA | AON QI-Shield EMF Device - Use code "JOSH" for 20% off 292 Pavel Stuchlik: The Healing Power of NOA | AON Breathwork Fairy 481 Scott Jackson | Rewire Yourself: How To Create A Life You Love With Freedom From Subconscious Sabotage The Future of Love: The Power of the Soul in Intimate Relationships by Daphne Rose Kingma and Marianne Williamson Tatum Christina The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida Johnny Blackburn 538 John Wineland | A New Masculine Paradigm: Leading With Love, Living Your Truth + Healing The World Jasmuheen Paul Chek | All Is God: Three Part Series 503 Paul Levy | Wetiko: Break Free From Collective Mass Psychosis 543 Kelly Brogan MD | How to Love ALL Your Parts + Be Self-Sovereign Steven Greer Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor EMF*D: 5G, Wi-Fi & Cell Phones: Hidden Harms and How to Protect Yourself by Dr. Joseph Mercola Electrohypersensitivity Hagen Thiers Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products BREATHE - 20% off with the code “PODCAST20” Organifi –20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' SEED Synbiotic - 30% off with the code "JOSHTRENT" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Cured Nutrition CBD - 20% off with the code "WELLNESS FORCE" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" HVMN Ketone-IQ - 20% off with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – 15% off with the link only NOOTOPIA - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" BiOptimizers - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - $25 off with the code "JOSH25" ION - 15% off with the code ‘JOSH1KS' Feel Free from Botanic Tonics - $40 off with the code "WELLNESS40" Essential Oil Wizardry - 10% off with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATERS - 33% off your first order with the code "JOSH33" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase Free Resources M21 Wellness Guide - Free 3-Week Breathwork Program with Josh Trent Join Wellness + Wisdom Community About Pavel Stuchlik NOA | AON (real name, Pavel Stuchlik) possesses an unquenchable thirst for personal fulfillment and a drive that constantly propels him forward. We’re delighted to have Mike Berland, the CEO, and founder of Decode_M, joining us on the show today. Mike is with us today to talk about data collection, analytics, and momentum. About Mike We currently live in a world that runs on data, and Mike holds the belief that everything is knowable, as long as you know where to look. Mike is the former chair of the Gotham Chapter of the New York City Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), and he is a Commonwealth Scholar from the University of Massachusetts. He has worked with many leading brands, including Airbnb, Lyft, Nike, Microsoft, Facebook, Estée Lauder Companies, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball. Mike has written three books. In 2009 he released a book that he co-authored with Doug Schoen, titled What Makes You Tick? How Successful People Do It and What You Can Learn from Them. Then, in 2005, he co-authored the number one bestseller, Fat-Burning Machine: The 12-Week Diet, with former Olympic triathlon coach Gale Bernhard. And he has now written a new book called Maximum Momentum: How to Build it and How to Keep It, which got released in January 2020. Mike has two adult children, and he lives in Manhattan, New York, with his wife of more than twenty-five years. About Decode_M Decode_M is a research, analytics, and insights firm that decodes data into momentum for its clients. It is a fast-moving firm that arms its clients with the actionable information they need to make critical decisions. As a team of passionate problem-solvers and data-driven storytellers, they use a diverse mix of data sets to identify the right answers and solutions so that their clients can take the right action immediately, with confidence. Collecting & analyzing the right data is where the job starts for the Decode_M team. Strategy, activation, and how the data gets used is what they are all about. Why Mike started Decode_M Mike started Decode_M because he felt that there was another analytical tool needed in the data research and analytics space. The most important question        When he started his career as a pollster, Mike asked questions, and he received answers. However, the answers were always limited to the data set. And Mike explains that when you’re a pollster, the most important questions are usually the ones you did not ask. So when you get the data and analyze it, you often realize that there are many other things that you wish that you had asked. Going beyond polling Over time, more and more data started becoming available, so Mike wanted to go beyond polling. He wanted to start analyzing all the data that was out there, using a new approach, new concepts, and new tools. New ways of gathering data fast In the old days, Mike had to call people on the phone and ask them questions to obtain the data that he needed. Now that he has a computer and cloud computing, he can process as much data as any top research lab in a matter of hours. And he can now also continuously go back to the social media data, or the behavioral data, rewrite the queries and keep building. Completing a project Before, with surveys, the project was complete once the report had been presented. Now, with Decode_M’s current analytics, the project is never really done because the data can continue to get mined. Momentum    Mike wrote a book called Maximum Momentum, with the idea that momentum is an amorphous word that may work in many different and varied contexts, and he wanted to quantify momentum. The M-Factor In physics, momentum equals mass times velocity. So Mike had to create the metrics from mass and velocity and then put them together to create what he calls the M-Factor. Mike explains that the mass is the volume of conversation, and the velocity is the engagement and the sentiment. How the market was getting things wrong Mike thought that the market was getting things wrong because all the metrics for social med...

This episode is sponsored by MeetEdgar. I've been using MeetEdgar to help me pay greater attention to what I share on social media, when I share it, and how I share it. One element of my work that is going to be impacted by using MeetEdgar is that I can give greater attention to areas of my work outside of social media - like the book I'm working on - because MeetEdgar will take care of my social media needs. If you want to give MeetEdgar a try, visit https://meetedgar.com/timecrafting (meetedgar.com/timecrafting) and use the code timecrafting to receive an extended 60-day free trial!Jason Zook is an unconventional entrepreneur. Tired of living a life that felt prescribed to him by society, Jason used his out-of-the-box thinking and ingenuity to create multiple profitable Internet-based businesses. From making $1m wearing sponsored t-shirts for a living with his IWearYourShirt business, to selling his last name twice and eventually even selling his future, Jason is all about owning his weird! Talking Points Why this book needed to come out now (3:33) Jason and I discuss the resonance of the word "weird" over "different" (6:05) What's difficult about adopting the mindset that being weird isn't just okay but how it can help you thrive (8:58) What (and who) is this book really about? (10:27) How do you pay attention to your "weird" above all of the other noise that's out there? (11:13) We talk about testing assumptions and how Jason does that (14:47) Why Jason can't work with a personal trainer to help him reach his fitness goals (17:09) I reveal this episode's Productivityist Podcast Pick of The Week (19:41) Why in the world did Jason decide to "sell his future" and how did it work out for him? (22:29) Does Jason look for weirdness when deciding to pursue projects? (26:37) This is what Jason said in his book that you can do right now to make your life better (28:30) Does every aspect of an initiative Jason pursues have to hit all three of his values? (29:11) Jason explains how challenging it was to write the "how to" aspect of the book (31:06) Quote "You cannot just go from 0 to 100 percent and be successful and have sustainability with it." - Jason Zook Helpful Links https://wanderingaimfully.com/own-your-weird/ (Get Own Your Weird) https://productivityist.com/podcast258/ (Episode 258: What You Can Learn from Napoleon Hill with Jeffrey Gitomer) https://wanderingaimfully.com/ (Wandering Aimfully) https://twitter.com/jasondoesstuff (@jasondoesstuff) The big thing that you need to think about around "owning your weird" is that you should absolutely OWN IT. I've found that when I embrace my weirdness that it hasn't led me astray - and has actually helped me forge a path that works even better for me. It's definitely worked for Jason and I'm certain it will do the same for you. (You've also got a book out there now that can help you out if you need it!) The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena
Heart Rate Variability and Survival // SPARTAN HEALTH 018

The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2019 4:00

When things run well, we often assume, they run regularly. From the pistons in a car to the daily changes in the tide, we often expect that processes run optimally when they progress or move forward in the same or a uniform way. Or if they change, the change is gradual and moves slowly from phase to phase – like the seasons or the way the sun rises and sets. One important body function is an exception! WHAT WE TALK ABOUT: While it may seem crazy at first, it turns out that all this variability … is good! Heart rate variability (HRV) is a strong indicator of health – of good mental and physical health as well as the potential or resiliency of the body to survive problems, stressors, and illness. It’s a big topic but today I want to introduce the concept and make you aware of what it is and how it can help you both short and long-term. Your heartbeat is controlled by your body’s autonomic nervous system (ANS). This system runs and regulates parts of your system that are always “on.” Things like your breathing, digestion, blood pressure and heart rate. The autonomic nervous system itself is divided into two main aspects: the fight or flight response or the relaxation response. When the autonomic system is relaxed, the heartbeat becomes more variable, demonstrating resilience and flexibility. In contrast, the “fight-or-flight” version of the autonomic system is triggered by stress (caused by an unhealthy emotional or physical conditions). If this stress response of the autonomic system is maintained, heart beat variability decreases as it moves to a more consistent high pitch. This racing heart beat is a symptom of high stress and is also an indicator that the body is being pushed towards an unhealthy and brittle state. It makes sense, then, that healthy heart rate variability would be an indicator of a person’s ability to bounce back from severe illness – and indicator of that person’s resilience. And, indeed, it is. One recent study showed that subjects suffering from cancer who had decreased heart rate variability were strongly associated with shorter survival time. This great indicator of overall health is surprisingly easy to access and read by being in tune with your body. It’s essentially your pulse. As you’re feeling your pulse, you’ll notice that time between heartbeats increases when you exhale and decreases when you inhale. If there are some good differences between the two, congratulations: you may have healthy heart rate variability!   KEY TERMS & IDEAS A large range of heart rate variability is a sign of health and resilience. The resilience pertains to both mental health and physical health, especially the potential to survive bouts of severe illness. Heart rate variability: the variation in the time interval between heartbeats. Autonomic nervous system: This system runs and regulates functions in your body that are always “on” and work without conscious control. This includes your breathing, digestion, blood pressure and heart rate Sympathetic nervous system: part of the autonomic nervous system that activates the “fight or flight” response. Parasympathetic nervous system: part of the autonomic nervous system that helps to slow heart rate, relax the sphincter muscles and increase intestinal and glandular activity.
