Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Today, I feel very in tune with this podcast's stated mission: Building HVAC Science covers a broad array of topics in building science and HVAC diagnostics, as well as human comfort, health, and safety….; this show will take a deep dive into all things that relate to buildings and people in the built environment. I was very fortunate to interview Dr. Joe Allen, an esteemed Indoor Air Quality researcher, presenter, and author, as we covered what Joe has observed and educated us on regarding the collision between two disciplines: building science and health science. Joe shares his observations, strategies, and tactics that are moving us toward an era where buildings go beyond doing no harm to occupants but focus more on maximizing the benefit to the occupants. Joe joins the growing list of people on this podcast who talk (all or in part) about indoor air quality or healthy buildings: Dr. Stephanie Taylor, Dr. Bill Bahnfelth, Joe Medosch, Larry Zarker, Nate Adams, Jason Earle, Cheryl Cieko, Dawn Oggier, Brian Kennihan, Ereland Bolle, Casey Grey, Ray Wu, Ben Reed, Kaleb Saleeby, Steve Pascuzzo, Big Clive, Ty Newell, Dick Kornbluth, and Jaques Touillion, amongst others. Carol Kauffman is Harvard Faculty, author, global speaker, leadership advisor and coach, who Marshall Goldsmith has described as the world's Number 1 Leadership Coach. This episode is an amazing insight into the life and work of Carol as we explore who Carol is and what drives her day to day in her work with some of the most senior and influential leaders in the world. Carol is committed to bringing the best out of people including herself. Her strong personal purpose is to be ‘a conduit for joy, the sword of truth to care for and challenge the powerful, galvanise their goodness so that they can change the world.' Carol gives an incredibly candid insight into her family life with a genius for a sister, a mother with strong values and a father who was a sociopath and CEO of his own company who tried with all of his might to corrupt Carol's thinking and approach to life. Thankfully Carol realised that this advice was not to be her path of truth, focus and impact in the world. Carol describes herself as an average student and her role as coach allows her massive permission to tell the truth to power and coach the fearful into achieving incredible results. Carol during her childhood was exposed to a rich variety of people from the rich and powerful of Monte Carlo to the Head of the Mob! She realised that the more you are in the spotlight, the less it is about you. Her role as coach is never to shame but to bring joy into the experience and care deeply before challenging someone to help improve their personal development. Human Centred Leadership capabilities are absolutely core for any leader to be a Force for Good. This is one of the reasons that Carol always asks her clients “who do you want to be right now?' as who you are will ripple out through your organisation. Carol explains the importance for all leaders to be coaches as it will allow them to establish positive relationships and be their best. This kind of interaction creates high profit and engagement and an environment of autonomy and psychological safety which changes how an entire organisation can run and meet challenges when being disrupted. Carol also gives me coach training 101. A good coach must be able to do the following: 1. Be a view to the future2. Focus on the skills of the other person3. Help navigate the person forward with questions (Carol shares her key questions in this episode) and positive confrontation Carol is set to launch her new book ‘Real Time Leadership – Find Your Winning Moves When the Stakes Are High' available from February 2023. In the book and episode, she outlines her M.O.V.E. approach to winning and the three dimensions of leadership. I even asked Carol for advice to play a tennis final, which I won. Thank you, Carol. Don't miss this incredible episode. Visit www.carolkauffman.com for a sneak peak of the book.

While the current coronavirus pandemic is affecting all of us, it isn't affecting all of us equally. Some communities—especially communities of color—are feeling the brunt of the virus more than others, in terms of higher rates of infection as well as economic fallout, among many other ways. In this third special COVID-19 episode of The Brain Architects podcast, host Sally Pfitzer is joined by Dr. David Williams, the Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Professor of African and African American Studies, Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Williams discusses ways in which the coronavirus pandemic is particularly affecting people of color in the U.S., and what that can mean for early childhood development. He also pinpoints the importance of creating "communities of opportunity" that will allow all families to thrive—both during and after this pandemic. Upcoming episodes of this special podcast series will focus on domestic violence, and the mental health implications of a global pandemic. Subscribe below via your podcast platform of choice to receive all new episodes as soon as they're released. Speakers Sally Pfitzer, Podcast Host Dr. David Williams, Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Additional Resources Harvard Scholar: David R. Williams Social and Behavioral Determinants of Toxic Stress Transcript Sally: Welcome to The Brain Architects, a podcast from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. I'm your host, Sally Pfitzer. Since our last podcast series was released, things have changed drastically as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. During this unprecedented time, we'd like to share resources and provide guidance that you may find helpful. So, we are creating a series of podcast episodes that address COVID-19 and child development. This episode is the third in our series, and our guest today is Dr. David Williams, the Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health - Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Professor of African and African American Studies -Harvard Faculty Arts & Sciences. Thanks for being with us today, Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams: Thank you, it's good for me to be here with you. Sally: Just so our listeners know, we're recording this podcast today on a video call, so the sound quality may be different from what you're used to hearing when we typically record this podcast in the studio. So, the data that's coming out now that we've been seeing continue to reinforce the research that you have been doing for many years around racial disparities, and we're seeing that this virus is disproportionately effecting people of color. What are you seeing now in terms of the data? Dr. Williams: We are seeing in multiple states more than half of all deaths from the Coronavirus are African American, and in virtually every state the percent of deaths of African Americans who die from the Coronavirus exceeds—it's larger than the percent of African Americans in the population in that state. So, there is a disproportionate negative impact on African Americans in New York City, and we see a similar pattern for Hispanics. I think the important point I would like to make at the onset is that first, this is not a surprise. Two, this reflects a longstanding pattern, not just for Coronavirus but for virtually all of the leading causes of death. And that this pattern does not reflect failures on the part of the individuals, the families, and the communities that experience such disproportionate losses. Sally: I think a lot of times when we're hearing about this data coming out, there is a missing component where people are hearing this is disproportionately affecting communities of color, but there is not a lot of talking happening right now around the ‘Why?

Winifred Elysse Newman's work concentrates on the issue of perception in psychology and the history of science and philosophies of aesthetics in the arts. Her areas of interest include the History of Technology, History of Science, History/Theory of Architecture, and Urban Theory from the Enlightenment. Her dissertation, "Imaginative Beholding: Physiological Psychology, Aesthetics and the Discourse of Representation in Fin-de-Siècle Germany" concerns the transformation of the modes of representation in the arts and science in early modernity. Focusing on the 1860s–1890s German discourse in physiological psychology, the dissertation posits that the exchange between aesthetics and science of new knowledge produced by instruments and empirical methodologies of calibrating psychological responses to visual and sensual stimuli leads to an ontological shift in the concept of representation in the arts. Newman was a Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and also received fellowships from the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Design. She has taught at Harvard University, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Tennessee. Additionally, she has published work in the United States and Germany and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Architectural Education. She is also a partner in the design firm Architect of Record - www.aor.us.com.
