My guests for this episode are a pair of friends who met at a tap dancing class and went on to become creative business partners. They have been sewing for more than 30 years, many of which were spent working together in their sewing studio in Ilkley in Yorkshire.Since Covid, their classes in sewing and quilting have gone from in person, on a local level, to online and a world-wide audience. They say their mission is to empower women through sewing, one stitch at a time.Their latest project, the book, Menopause Makes was borne out of many conversations between the friends about the Menopause. They had previously written a book together and decided that as it was a topic of conversation they regularly spoke about, surely many other women were doing the same, so why not write about it in a sewing context.Along with a foreword by Dr Hannah Davies, a doctor specialising in menopause and lifestyle medicine, the book contains 10 patterns, one for each of ten different menopause symptoms. There is a sleep mask to aid insomnia, a basket for lost things to help with memory loss and keep cool quilt for night sweats. As well as running classes, both online and in person, Jenni & Kay have travelled abroad to meet crafters from overseas, tell their stories and learn about their traditional crafts and techniques producing crafty travelogues as part of their online courses. Among their creative destinations have been Ireland, the Netherlands and Hawaii along with locations closer to their homes in Yorkshire, like Scotland and Northumberland. For the full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches Podcast website. A Conservative MP who has spent years trying to expose the rape gangs scandal says that more than 50 towns have been affected.Robbie Moore, the MP for Keighley and Ilkley, has made dozens of interventions in the Commons to try to expose the plight of young white children being groomed or raped by predominantly Pakistani men.Research based on court documents by GB News suggests that 50 towns could be affected, more than the six examined in the official review in child sexual exploitation by Baroness Jay review in 2022.But in an interview with Chopper's Political Podcast, Moore said that he "would not be surprised" if more than 50 towns were affected.Sit back, pour yourself a drink and join GB News' Political Editor Christopher Hope at his regular table in a Westminster pub where he will discuss the latest insider political intrigue and gossip with everyone from popstars to politicians. Carole O'Neill's (Guest Host) guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tina Hogan Grant, author of the book Secrets Told. A native of England, she feels very lucky to have spent her childhood and adolescent years in a small quaint Yorkshire town called Ilkley, where many days were spent roaming the Yorkshire moors, climbing the Cow & Calf Rocks, swimming in the River Wharfe and playing “Conkers” and “Jacks” with schoolmates. She is the youngest daughter of famed science-fiction author James P. Hogan who sadly passed away before her first book was published. She thanks her dad for sharing his passion for books and writing with her. Today she is living that passion with hopes of passing it on to her children and grandkids. In Carol's book review, I stated As I read the beginning chapters of Secrets Told by Tina Hogan Grant, I was certain her main character was a carbon copy of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. Patricia Levenick's complete focus on her job (this one as the head of her own law firm in Manhattan) reminded me of how everyone at the workplace feared upsetting their workaholic boss. Patricia even had two daughters, like Miranda. Ones she kept busy with ballet lessons, horseback riding lessons and any other activity that would not interfere with the needs of her law firm. I knew where this story was going. Then suddenly, the twist. Patricia's reaction to the letter she receives from a lawyer back in her hometown, changes everything. Initially, she was not going to let confronting her past change her lifestyle, or even slow it down long enough to admit she left a very different existence far from the hustle and bustle of New York City. With the insistence of her ex-husband, Bryce, that their daughters have a right to know who she really is, she agrees to take the family back long enough to satisfy his curiosity about what her childhood was really like. Their surprising knowledge of her life on the water and the discovery of a grandfather they never knew they had, brings the entire family to a new high. Alaska becomes its own character as they explore the amazing countryside and uncover the real Pattie. Grant reveals a memorable picture of the love of fishing in a nearly perfect world. Tiffany Keep (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK) will realise a dream when she rolls out for the women's road race at the Olympic Games in Paris on August 4, 2024. In this engaging interview, Tiffany describes her lifelong passion for cycling, her formative experiences as a mountain biker in Stellenbosch and her determination to develop her road racing skills in Europe from the moment she finished her degree studies. Brother UK has been at Tiffany's side for the last two seasons, as co-title sponsor of Hutchinson-Brother UK last year and now as one of three companies supporting DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK, a UCI Continental women's team that has provided Tiffany with racing opportunities in territories as distinct as East Cleveland and Portugal, Ilkley and Luxembourg. In this engaging interview with co-host Timothy John, Tiffany describes the value of DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK's diverse programme and the progress she's made as a rider since joining the squad. She pays tribute to the UK's thriving domestic scene and reveals how riding alongside world-class rivals in events like the Tour of Britain Women and the Volta a Portugal Feminina has helped her to overcome “imposter syndrome”. Sporting events do not come bigger than the Olympics, and Tiffany relives the joyful moment in which she received the email confirming her participation. She shares her thoughts on the 158km course, describes her final pre-race preparations in Tours, just south of Paris, and expresses her determination to give her best for her country, riding in the service of Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. From South Africa's gruelling Cape Epic mountain bike stage race to the Ride London Classique, Tiffany's varied and challenging route to the top will reach its climax, if not its culmination, in Paris. Discover her post-Games ambitions, her supportive relationships with friends, family and teammates, and learn how experience gained on the streets of Glasgow at last year's world championships might pay dividends in the City of Light when gold medals, rather than rainbow jerseys are at stake.

There comes a time when a startup moves to a scale-up, where small ideas take off and before you know it, you've got a hit on your hands. But with the highs come the responsibilities of leadership. In this episode, Dan shares his experience creating a successful music festival in his hometown of Ilkley, and offers valuable insights on how to make it work.Defining your values as you growDan and Pia discuss how Ilkley Live's leadership is evolving, just as it does with any startup. The process looks like this: Determine your purpose and values Communicate them clearly to your team and stakeholders Be open to feedback and make adjustments Give people autonomy to take ownership Stay invested in your values, even as the project grows Losing sight of your core values puts the support of your team at risk, so while they don't necessarily need to be on paper, they do need to be held.LinksLeave us a voice note
Nestled in the picturesque Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire, England, lies a story that has confounded researchers and captivated believers for decades. Our journey begins on a misty evening in 1987 when former cop, Philip Spencer routinely walked the Moore on his way to see his father-in-law. Little did he know that this stroll would lead to a fateful encounter that would change his life forever.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this episode, Rod Hepworth, Director of It's Your Move Ilkley, discusses how he began within the industry 23 years ago at the ripe old age of 40, after a life of many careers including a Cow Inseminator and a Professional DJ! Rod founded It's Your Move Ilkley in 2007, which provides mainly domestic moving, storage and packing services, local and national (although they do International too using forwarding agents), running 2 HGV's, 4 low loaders, a panel van, and 7 members of staff. It's Your Move Ilkley have been members of Move Assured for the last 3 years but is hoping to join the British Association of Removers imminently. Rod's biggest challenges were learning to grow the business and become a professional company, and becoming VAT registered (in 2013) where he had to compete with local non-VAT registered movers. The one thing Rod would like to change from his moving past is to learn the industry quicker. Rod hopes his highpoint of being within the industry is still to come (even at the age of 63!) but believes joining the BAR will be one. Covid, or rather the Stamp Duty Holiday was a highpoint (the golden age of removals). The one thing Rod would like to change within the industry is the conveyancing system which Rod says is outdated and disjointed. Rod would also like to see the VAT threshold lowered. The advice Rod would give himself just starting out within the industry again is to do it 20 years earlier! In the next 5 years Rod hopes to be doing a little bit less, delegating a little bit more, and It's Your Move Ilkley to continue being successful. Industry wise Rod sees no major changes, he doesn't believe in legislation for the 3.5 tonners, or that electric vehicles will make too much of an impact. Outside of the industry Rod follows football, sponsoring his local team Guiseley, but his passion lies with Manchester United. Rod also loves traveling, music and attending concerts, Rod is a big Bruce Springsteen fan! And as always we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story, regarding Mrs Mad. Enjoy! One midsummer's morning, c. 1820, William Butterfield opened the door to the Wells, a healing spring on the edge of Ilkley Moor. He was startled to find a band of little creatures dressed in green from head to foot, who were noisily disporting themselves in the water. As he watched, they scurried over the eight-foot-high wall, and disappeared. Is there any way to determine exactly what William Butterfield saw that morning? Were they insects, lizards, or, as William believed, fairies? Simon and Chris investigate. On a hot summer's day the River Wharfe in Ilkley in West Yorkshire is a tempting place to swim. In 2020 it was designated as the first inland waterway to be safe for bathing. Just over a year later the water was found to be polluted by animal and human faeces and locals and tourists were advised to stay out of the river. The River Wharfe certainly isn't unique, Britain's rivers are taking the brunt of rising populations, antiquated sewage treatment and intensive agriculture. Too much waste- human, animal and chemical- is entering our rivers, exposing swimmers and wildlife to infection. Extreme weather as experienced in February is only making matters worse. Charlotte Smith and Caz Graham search for solutions to Britain's polluted rivers. Producer: Hermeet Chadha
After the popularity of the previous episode looking at local news stories, I have another roundup of the goings on in Yorkshire's local newspapers. I start with news of a storm from the Yorkshire Post (founded 1754) and the Ilkley Gazette. I move onto a serious crime case from the Telegraph and Argus, before delving into the local take on the Prime Minister's 'Partygate' scandal as seen by a Yorkshire notable. In the second half, I look at some lighter stories, including the Mayor of West Yorkshire landing herself in a spot of bother, a bookshop hoping to win a prize, a local resident getting a high appointment, a local charity fundraiser from Ilkley (again), and Ilkey's 'Pub of the Week'.Links to original stories are available above on most podcast players (Spotify and Buzzsprout definitely work), and all comments on them are my own. The Tour Series is Britain's best-loved series of city centre circuit races. Since 2009, it's granted an early opportunity to blossoming British talent. Brother UK has sponsored The Tour Series since 2014 and served as Official Print and Results Partner since 2016. We proudly sponsor the Brother Fastest Lap competition, too. This episode is the second instalment of a two-part preview of the 2021 Tour Series. Co-hosts Timothy John and Phil Jones, the Managing Director of Brother UK, are joined by Larry Hickmott, the editor of VeloUK.net. The trio discuss key points from part one: a documentary-style examination of crit racing, also available from this platform. Reigning British Circuit Race Champions Joey Walker and Rebecca Durrell shared insights in our investigative episode. Tim reflects on Joey's revelation that elite riders must always race on the very limit of crashing, such is the speed and intensity of top-level crit races like those featured in The Tour Series. Phil offers his first impressions of all-action crit racing (“flat out from the gun and hold on till the line”) and a more detailed analysis based on the huge “situational awareness” that a rider must have to process the position of rivals, team-mates and instructions received while passing the pits. Larry considers the star performers of the season-to-date and reflects that The Tour Series will represent a first coming together. He identifies Lucy Lee and Dani Shrosbree of Team Brother UK-LDN, Team Breeze and the Brother UK-sponsored Crimson Performance men's squad among those to watch when The Tour Series begins. A condensed, week-long campaign represents The Tour Series' return from its Covid-enforced absence last year. Councils have traditionally invested in hosting rounds. Many now face budget shortfalls, following austerity and a public health crisis. Phil argues that the need to reinvigorate town centres offers race organisers a new selling point. Larry reports on the huge crowds who attended the recent National Circuit Series events in Otley and Ilkley. He reflects on public desire for enjoyment and events after a series of lockdowns. Covid, he concedes, continues to present elite cycle sport with an uncertain future, in the short-term at least. Tim argues that this September's Tour of Britain will represent a valuable barometer of public opinion. Britain's national tour has its “grand départ” on the Cornish riviera in September. The willingness or otherwise of crowds to gather in towns like Penzance to greet the race will be revealing, Tim maintains. The trio considers the roster of top performers who have established reputations at The Tour Series. Alice and Hannah Barnes, Graham Briggs, Ed Clancy, Dean Downing, Grace and Lucy Garner, Anna Henderson and Tom Pidcock are just some who used its town centre circuit races as a springboard to stardom. Listen now to enjoy insights from Tim, Larry and Phil and whet your appetite for the return of The Tour Series. Don't forget to check out part one of this episode for insights from Joey Walker (Crimson Performance-Orientation Marketing), Rebecca Durrell (CAMS-Basso), Peter Hodges (SweetSpot) and Mark Botteley (Team Brother UK-OnForm).
What a County Week it was for Derbyshire Men! The team played five and won five to win Division 3. In this episode, Derbyshire Men's Captain James Rushby takes a look back at what was a memorable week in Ilkley…
In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore some curiosities and unanswered questions from Greg's research, including a novelist's ashes, some bathing fairies, the mists of Dartmoor, and a ballooning leopard. We'll also revisit the Somerton man and puzzle over an armed traveler. Intro: Amanda McKittrick Ros is widely considered the worst novelist of all time. John Cummings swallowed 30 knives. Sources for our notes and queries: The Pony Express ad is quoted in Christopher Corbett's 2004 history Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of the Pony Express. It appeared first in Missouri amateur historian Mabel Loving's posthumous 1961 history The Pony Express Rides On!, but she cites no source, and no one's been able to find the ad. The anecdote about John Gawsworth keeping M.P. Shiel's ashes in a biscuit tin appears in John Sutherland's 2011 book Lives of the Novelists. "The comedian and scholar of nineteenth-century decadent literature, Barry Humphries, was (unwillingly) one such diner -- 'out of mere politeness.'" Sutherland gives only this source, which says nothing about the ashes. (Thanks, Jaideep.) Henry Irving's observation about amateur actors and personal pronouns is mentioned in Robertson Davies' 1951 novel Tempest-Tost. Joseph Addison's definition of a pun appeared in the Spectator, May 10, 1711. Theodore Hook's best pun is given in William Shepard Walsh's Handy-Book of Literary Curiosities, 1892. Richard Sugg's anecdote of the Ilkley fairies appears in this 2018 Yorkshire Post article. The proof of the Pythagorean theorem by "Miss E. A. Coolidge, a blind girl" appears in Robert Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan's 2011 book Hidden Harmonies: The Lives and Times of the Pythagorean Theorem. They found it in Elisha Scott Loomis' 1940 book The Pythagorean Proposition, which cites the Journal of Education (Volume 28, 1888, page 17), which I haven't been able to get my hands on -- the Kaplans couldn't either, until they discovered it had been mis-shelved in the stacks of Harvard's Gutman Library. Neither Loomis nor the Kaplans gives the proof as it originally appeared, and neither gives Coolidge's age at the proof. The anecdote of the Dartmoor fog appears in William Crossing's 1888 book Amid Devonia's Alps. The Paris fogs of the 1780s are described in Louis-Sébastien Mercier's Tableau de Paris (Chapter CCCLXIV, 1:1014), a 12-volume topographic description of the city that appeared between 1782 and 1788, as quoted in Jeremy Popkin, ed., Panorama of Paris: Selections From Tableau de Paris, 2010. "I have known fogs so thick that you could not see the flame in their lamps," Mercier wrote, "so thick that coachmen have had to get down from their boxes and feel their way along the walls. Passers-by, unwilling and unwitting, collided in the tenebrous streets; and you marched in at your neighbour's door under the impression that it was your own." The anecdote about Charles Green and his ballooning companions appears in John Lucas' 1973 book The Big Umbrella. The best image I've been able to find of the Dobhar-chú, the "king otter" of Irish folklore, accompanies this 2018 article from the Leitrim Observer. Does a photo exist of Grace Connolly's entire headstone? According to WorldCat, G.V. Damiano's 1922 book Hadhuch-Anti Hell-War is held only by the New York Public Library System; by Trinity College Library in Hartford, Ct.; and by the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. If it's available online, I haven't been able to find it. The incident of the dividing typewriters is mentioned in this article from the Vancouver Sun, and there's a bit more on this Australian typewriter blog. The anecdote about Enroughty being pronounced "Darby" appears in the designer's notes for the wargame The Seven Days, Volume III: Malvern Hill. This 1912 letter to the New York Times affirms the pronunciation, and this 1956 letter to American Heritage gives another explanation of its origin -- one of many. A few more confirming sources: Robert M. Rennick, "I Didn't Catch Your Name," Verbatim 29:2 (Summer 2004). Parke Rouse, "The South's Cloudy Vowels Yield to Bland Consonance," [Newport News, Va.] Daily Press, Feb. 23, 1989, A11. Earl B. McElfresh, "Make Straight His Path: Mapmaking in the Civil War," Civil War Times 46:4 (June 2007), 36-43, 5. But even if it's true, there's no consistent explanation as to how this state of affairs came about. Can business be a force for good? Definitely, according David Hanney, CEO of Alpkit, a business and certified B Corp which designs and sources outdoor clothing, camping equipment, bikes and other gear. Alpkit sells direct-to-consumers through its website and its stores in the UK. It now has more than 100 employees – 6 years ago there were just 12. It's a great business in many ways, as David explains, with a set of six sustainability principles informing how it operates (and central to how it does business). Alpkit must be commercially viable to exist. Alongside this, it knows it has a responsibility to its staff, suppliers, customers, the environment and the communities it operates in to be a good citizen. It's growth has been supported by a responsible finance provider and David explains why and how it secured finance, what the process was, and how it now banks with the mainstream bank which actually referred it to a community development finance institution (CDFI). He also talks through the accreditation process for becoming a B Corp and Alpkit's scores, how Alpkit ran a crowdfunding campaign which was fully subscribed in just minutes, and how in the next 5 years the most innovative and commercially successful products will be sustainable products. We recorded this interview with David in Spring 2021. Since then Alpkit's sustainable growth has continued, with new stores in Edinburgh, Betws y Coed, and Ilkley on top of its shops in Ambleside, Hathersage, Keswick, the Metrocentre. It is about to open in Bristol. What next? Alpkit's website Its Six Sustainability Principles and 2021 Sustainability Report Our member, First Enterprise - Enterprise Loans, has worked with thousands of start-ups and growing businesses (like Alpkit) to help them follow their dreams and achieve their goals.

I had a great time chatting to Yvonne Carmichael the Director of South Square Heritage Arts & Community Centre in Thornton Bradford."South Square Centre is a collection of 19th Century Grade II workers cottages. In 1979, following a period of dereliction, 30 unemployed people and graduates from Bradford College came together to transform the building and Thornton and Allerton Community Association Ltd was formed pioneering the building’s restoration in partnership with Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the Manpower Services Commission. The unique U-shaped building is one of the last surviving examples of this courtyard feature in the region.Renovated as a community arts and heritage centre in 1982, South Square Centre is now home to ten studio spaces for a variety of artists, an art gallery, community spaces, an Antiquarian Archive, fine art framers, a bar, and café. It is committed to providing a platform and opportunities for new artists and curators.Leeds-based Brooks Ecological worked alongside South Square to conserve The Bronte Bats. The Capital Works project is being carried out by Ilkley-based company Dobson Construction.Thornton is famous as the birthplace of literary family the Brontë’s and its impressive 20-arch viaduct – it also features on the famous Brontë Stone Walk. The Brontës birthplace is still standing and lived in - part of it is now a café called Emily’s.Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and their brother Branwell were born in the house and would later move to nearby Haworth where the Brontë Parsonage Museum still celebrates their work. The capital project is also supported by Arts Council England, Garfield Weston Foundation and Bradford Council. Hello, and welcome to Wild Wimmin the Wild Swimming Podcast, I'm Laura Macdonald. I've got a bit of a different episode for you today: two interviews both about the work of the Ilkley Clean River Group. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Ilkley is a delightful little Spa town in West Yorkshire in the North of England, and running through Ilkley is the River Wharfe, which runs for 65 miles from its source in the Yorkshire Dales National Park until it joins the river Ouse.First off today I'm speaking to Karen Shakleton who founded the Ilkley Clean River Group, after witnessing a Combined sewerage outflow in action. I also recorded a chat with swimmer, town councillor and all round excellent fellow Owen Wells about his life as an outdoor swimmer, his relationship to the river and the really shitty problems that bathers are encountering with river pollution.Links:Ilkley Clean River Group website, Facebook and Instagram.
