Episode 275: On May 8, 1984, a man with a beard, dressed in Canadian Forces camouflage attire and wearing a beret, entered the studios of CJRP, a radio station in Quebec City. Employees at the station noticed the man had a knife secured to his leg. The man approached the assistant to radio host André Arthur's assistant, presented her with an envelope while introducing himself as “Mr. D.” and promptly left. The man was later identified as Denis Lortie, a 25-year-old disgruntled Canadian Forces corporal who then entered the Citadelle de Quebec to commit a mass shooting of members of the National Assembly of Quebec. He opened fire, killing three unelected legislature employees, Georges Boyer, 61, Camille Lepage, 54, and Roger Lefrançois, 57. He injured thirteen others before being apprehended, thanks to the heroism of René Marc Jalbert, a retired Canadian Forces officer and the sergeant-at-arms of the National Assembly of Quebec. Lortie's actions shocked the nation and prompted discussions on security measures and political extremism. Jalbert's earned him the Cross of Valour, Canada's highest civilian bravery award. Kristy Jalbert is a hair dresser in Dallas that I first met in Costa Rica. She gave me a few dope viking braids during my time down there and we had a lot of time to drop in and connect. Kristy states that when she starts haircuts it always begins in the hair and ends in the heart. This is a testament to the heart she has and the reverence that she brings to her life and work. I opened up to Kristy about my desire to shave my head for a video project. When the video project fell through, the desire to release my hair was still strong so Kristy and I connected to drop in and create a hair cutting ceremony. This podcast is the conversation we had about the experience after releasing my hair the night before. It's powerful, raw, vulnerable, and an honor to share the story of this experience that had a profound impact on me with you. Struggling with ADHD, depression, PTSD, anxiety, trauma - or if you're not at your best, here is another tool to put in our bag. If life is a journey to wholeness and wellness, maybe neuro feedback can help us get further down that road. Hope you enjoy!

After a brief pause for the cause, *The Upful LIFE Podcast* is back with Episode 026 featuring Ryan Jalbert of The Motet. In late December, on the heels of The Motet's co-headline funkstravaganza at the Fillmore with KDTU, Ryan and I finally caught up for an hour in downtown San Francisco. Jalbert was on his way to a jazz show at the Black Cat, but took timeout to make sure we got the proper time for a powwow. I've been a fan of his for several years now, and Ryan has been a listener to this podcast since almost the beginning too, as such it was a pretty cool dynamic for the interview. We basically just kicked it for a while, chopped it up about his path taken, with some attention to detail and the typical musical/cultural rabbit holes. RYAN JALBERT INTRO > CONVO begins at 14:30 First, a contest giveaway! VI Jam Fest in St. John, US.VI!! Enter to win two free tickets with camping, value $630 USD! Just share this post on the Upful LIFE Facebook page, OR LEAVE A REVIEW ON UPFUL LIFE iTUNES & send an email to B.Getz@upfullife.com After the contest information, we jump into the interview with Ryan Jalbert. This conversation covers his entire musical journey, from his childhood in Western Mass, learning the guitar, loving the blues as a kid, up through college, Phish tours, the music scene in the Northeast in the early 2000s, working with Brett Dennen, Leslie Helpert, joining The Motet, and then his 15-year odyssey that continues up through their most recent LP Death or Devotion. We finish with a little bit on his side project Jalbatross with brother Colin, as well as some of his recent favorite artists.
