"In 1964, Eddie Wilson had it all. He had genius. He had vision. He had the hottest rock n' roll band in the country. Then, suddenly one night, his car went off a dark New Jersey bridge. His body was never found. But his dream was never lost. And twenty years later, the mystery of Eddie Wilson begins to unravel." This week on Fabulous Film and Friends I'm both chasing butterflies and swatting at hornets whilst forcing my friends to watch and analyze the films of director S. Craig Zahler a filmmaker who couldn't have a more awkward professional name than if he had gone with "E. Marvin Bummington." But are his films worth discussing? We're talking 2015's Bone Tomahawk starring the mighty Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, David Arquette, Lili Simmons, Fred Melamed, Kathryn Morris, Geno Segers and in a pair of blink and you'll miss ‘em cameos: Sean Young and Michael Paré then 2017's Brawl in Cell Block 99 starring Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, Geno Segers, Dion Mucciato and Don Johnson and finally Dragged Across Concrete which came out somewhere in 2019 and stars Mel Gibson, Tory Kettles, Michael Jai White, Thomas Kretschmann and “the S. Craig Zahler traveling players” who include Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Fred Melamed, Udo Kier and Don Johnson. My guests today are my go-to series regulars who are the only pair I know who have the slightest interest in joining me in this flight of fancy, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we wander outside of town onto the deadly trail: the synopses: In Bone Tomahawk, a murderous outlaw unwittingly leads a band of cannibalistic savages into a peaceful western town where the brutes kidnap the jailed outlaw, a deputy and the town's doctor who is also the wife of Arthur, a local rancher. Despite an injured leg, Arthur joins a rescue party with Sheriff Hunt, Hunt's old deputy Chicory, and a mysterious dandy cum gunslinger named Brooder. With Arthur's injury slowing them down, the four brave men follow the savage's path to hellish territory where they come face-to-face with unimaginable horrors that test both the team's courage and sanity. Brawl in Cell Block 99 tells the tale of Bradley Thomas who, in one day , is fired from his job and learns his wife is having an affair. He decides the only way to salvage his marriage is to go full time into drug smuggling to make the real money. A year later all is well: Bradley has a big house and his wife is pregnant but he goes in on a shady deal with some sleazy cartel types and it all goes south, forcing Bradley to choose between killing cops and killing cartel members. He chooses the latter but still ends up with in a five year prison sentence in a minimum security prison. Seems it is what it is until a messenger from the cartel comes to visit Bradley on his second day in the cooler and tells him that if he doesn't get transferred to the maximum-security prison in order to kill a high value target in Cell Block 99 that his wife and unborn child will be murdered. Bradley dutifully and mercilessly follows their orders to save his family until he realizes all may not be what it seems. In Dragged Across Concrete, unorthodox and vaguely shady take-no-prisoners cops, Brett Ridgeman and Anthony Lurasetti, are suspended for use of excessive force and use their unpaid leave to plan a heist. Unfortunately, their plot leads to witnessing a deadly bank robbery committed by a vicious and amoral trio of crooks led by Lorentz Vogelmann, who hired street thugs Henry Johns and Biscuit to be part of their team. With a dire hostage situation on their hands and after witnessing several murders, Henry and Biscuit begin to suspect that their hours are numbered as part of Vogelmann's crew. At the same time, Ridgeman and Lurassetti are the only ones who have tailed the gang to their getaway hideout and are the only pair who can make a difference. The two forces meet up in the proverbial abandoned warehouse and chaos ensues. How do the films stack up?

And as we dig into the films of John Carpenter in the 1990s, we also delve into… Eddie and the Cruisers, the camera knows where you're going, The Blasters, Walter Hill, above reproach, werewolf movies, Bruce Dern, The Philadelphia Experiment, four days in full prosthetics, not everybody can be an actor, searching for cryptids, Jim Steinman, Tom Berenger, shooting on a virtual reality LED set, this is an artist, Village Of The Damned, Eric Red, Jane Goodall, you can't say no to Diane Lane, Nix, Cigarette Burns, working in a kitchen, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, Willem Dafoe, Sacred Grounds, Crazy Times, Jeff Bridges, subconscious demons, flirting with girls, Dan Hartman, Bad Moon, Chevy Chase, the dog's POV and the challenge of marketing an eclectic movie. “I don't know if anybody is prepared for their first time in Hollywood.”
Can a bad performance make a film better? Does Kat really like cocaine 80s cinema? Is it difficult stripping to blue grass music? These questions and more are explored as the gang reviews “Flash Gordon” and “Streets of Fire.” We're sorry (but not really), Michael Paré. On this week's episode of YKY we look back at the box office flop, but cult hit, 1984's Streets of Fire, A Rock n roll fable. Directed by Walter Hill (So yes there will be fog) and starring Michael Paré, a 19 year old Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan and a very young looking Willem Dafoe. This was a strange blend of genres that also has a fantastic soundtrack. If you like your action dark, foggy, with killer musical numbers you may just love this movie. Ah...the 80's.
On this episode, we hear from mental health, and addictions specialists Dr. Chris Cavacuiti, Dr. Renata Villela and Dr. Michael Paré who discuss how the pandemic has affected patient treatment, and the impact the increasing demand for services is having on them as physicians.

Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines. We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. I was given another opportunity to screen a film before it's release date and this week's episode is on the new film Hollow Point, which releases on April 9th starring Luke Goss, Dilan Jay, Jay Mohr, JuJu Chan Szeto, Bill Duke, Michael Paré, Roger Guenveur, and Natalie Burn. It's directed by Daniel Zirilli, who also was one of the writers, along with Chad Law and Evan Law. Remember two things: “Keep your head down and don’t shoot your dick off.” “I really just didn’t want to get raped today." Themed Drink: Well since this is a new film, there really isn't a themed drink, during the podcast we suggest a Blood and Honey from Revolver Brewery, which is an American Ale. We also suggest a Bloody Mary, beer, or something that will make you feel like you've been punched in the face; so you've got options. Drinking Game: Take a sip every time someone says F**k or Mother F***er. Take a sip every time someone shoots someone or shoots a gun. Take a sip every time you see a token minority character. Take a sip every time someone has a tragic back story. Finish your drink if someone dies. Finish your drink when you see bad CGI. As always, drink responsibly and with others. On this episode, we're digging into Walter Hill's 1984 rock n' roll fable STREETS OF FIRE! It's a musical with numbers that can level entire city blocks. It's an aggressively '80s take on motorcycle gangs of the '50s. It's a wannabe western starring a stoic hero with a duster and a Winchester. It's all of these things and so much more. Michael Paré is Tom Cody, a drifter hired to rescue his ex-girlfriend, rock singer Ellen Aim (Diane Lane) from the clutches of Willem Dafoe's Raven and his Bomber gang. The soundtrack features cuts from The Fixx and The Blasters, as well as songs written by Jim Steinman, Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks. It's a classic rock spectacle the likes of which we've never seen and perhaps will never see again. Come join us on this journey through a comic book vision of the 1950s that never was... In this episode of the Tortoise & The Hare Experience, we’re going to experience actor “Michael Paré”! Paré was working as a chef in New York City when an agent, convinced him to try acting. Paré’s first starring role was as Tony Villcana on the television series The Greatest American Hero (1981). His well-known film …
I catch up with actor Michael Parè (Eddie and the Cruisers, Street of Fire), who tells me how he got the part of Tony on The Greatest American Hero and why there hasn't The been a remake. Michael tells the story of how he lied to get the part of Eddie Wilson, how he nailed the lip synching and why the sequel failed. Michael also tells me about his role in the movie, LAbyrinth, about the murders of Tupac and the Notorious BIG.
Mike, Max and Shane recap the “saga” that led to having Frank D’Angelo on the podcast and discuss Shane’s experience with his wife at a recent film premiere. Frank D’Angelo (“Sicilian Vampire,” “The Red Maple Leaf”) tells Shane about his prolific film career, acting, songwriting, “The Being Frank Show,” critics, Michael Paré, Daniel Baldwin, adversity, memorable dialogue, “The Neighborhood,” Giancarlo Giannini, James Caan, relationships, wealth, climate change and Donald Trump. (If you're new to the podcast and want more on the "saga," listen to Shane's dessert segments from episodes 44-47 and 51-52.)

The latest episode is a little late but I promise you it's well worth it. This time around I take a look at one of my absolute favorite rock and roll stories, Eddie and the Cruisers. I delve into P.F. Kluge's original novel; talk about the 1983 feature film starring Michael Paré as Eddie Wilson, along with Tom Berenger and Ellen Barkin; and I even cover the sequel, Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! So come along for a rock and roll ghost story for the ages! Show notes and pictures are available at http://popcultureaffidavit.com, which is also where you can see regular weekly blog entries about the randomness that is pop culture. MTV VJ Icon, SiriusXM 80's on 8 I Want My MTV.................. This week I Blast off into a Rock and Roll 1st Wave Flashback with the very 1st VJ to appear on screen @ MTV: Alan Hunter! And you can get a glimpse into the groundbreaking history, original VJ's, music artists, celebrities, location gigs & fun in the new book: “VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV’s First Wave” Alan Hunter was one of the original five video jockeys (VJ's) on MTV from 1981 to 1987 (along with Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Martha Quinn, and J. J. Jackson) During his senior year in college he got his first television acting job in the ABC MOW Love’s Savage Fury, starring Raymond Burr, Jennifer O’Neill and Michael Paré. Afterwards, he held a series of cliché struggling actor gigs: bartender, waiter, phone answering service attendant and a handful of Off Off Broadway roles, He earned a role in the music video for David Bowie's "Fashion" and a role as usher in the film musical Annie, before being tapped to join the fledgling MTV network. August 1, 1981 at midnight in selected markets. Hunter was, by accident, the first VJ to appear on screen, with the words "And I'm Alan Hunter. Let's get to it". During his first month with MTV, he kept his regular job tending bar at New York's Magic Pan. When a customer recognized him, he left bartending and became a full-time VJ, attending concerts and parties until the wee hours and then coming back to the studio at 8:00 AM for a full day of taping interviews, promos and features. As MTV became the center of the entertainment universe, Hunter’s celebrity interviews included the first MTV interviews with Madonna, Duran Duran and U2, and also included Ozzy Osbourne, Aretha Franklin, Frank and Moon Unit Zappa, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loverboy, Kasim Sultan, Crosby Stills & Nash, Kevin Bacon, Robin Williams, Dan Aykroyd, Eurythmics, Kenny Loggins, the Psychedelic Furs, Bob & Doug McKenzie, Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, Andy Warhol, the Cars, the GoGos, the Bangles, Colin Hay and Men at Work, Boy George, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, John Mellencamp, Hugh Hefner, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Rod Stewart, Cheap Trick, Billy Idol, Thomas Dolby, Joe Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Crowded House, Michael McDonald, Rick Springfield, Peter Wolf, Toto, Level 42, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Martin Short, Chevy Chase and Pee-Wee Herman among others. In his latter MTV years, Hunter became known for his remotes and road trips in such iconic and pioneering MTV programming like “MTV Spring Break”, “MTV’s Amuck in America” and “MTV’s Hedonism Weekend with Bon Jovi in Jamaica”. Hunter distinguished himself by pushing for more remotes and road trips rather than in-studio interviews. He stayed with the network for seven years before relocating to Los Angeles, where he starred in numerous Fox pilots, precursors of today's reality programming. In the mid-90s, he moved back to his hometown to start a film company with his brother called Hunter Films, and, to create WorkPlay. You can catch Alan on SiriusXM's 80's on 8! © 2013 Building Abundant Success!! 2013 All Rights Reserved Join Me on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess
