Choosing to portray the rise of Bob Dylan as a mainstream Music 101 period piece may have been a commercial choice that has rubbed some true Dylan Heads the wrong way, but the director has at least made an entertaining prestige picture that looks and feels right with Chalamet up to the challenge of playing a difficult part. We discuss how this film retools the actual history for the sake of Hollywood conventions, how Mangold chooses to portray the women in Dylan's life and the film's cautious treatment of any political content, keeping things vague enough that it's been left open to interpretation; in some conservative circles they think the film is really about Dylan the individual artist taking on the Marxist folk music scene, portrayed here as The Establishment. Plus: Jared and I discuss Bob Dylan, the pioneer of singing with a funny voice (a big influence on Paul McCartney, we think) and dreamcast some future Dylan biopics! Today, I'm thrilled to be joined by Jared Bailey ( @jarebearmusic ), the producer, and co-host of the Dropouts ( @DropoutsPodcast ) podcast. If you're a Dropouts fan, you'll love this episode.(And, if you haven't already I highly recommend checking out the Zach Justice episode as well, since Zach is another co-host of Dropouts: https://youtu.be/_gXbyIonpvw)The Dropouts brand has exploded since I started following them about a year and a half ago. They started the podcast in a spare room of a modest apartment in LA, and it has grown immensely. Now, they have over a million subscribers on YouTube, with each video racking up millions of views. Their fan base is incredibly passionate. If you're tuning in from the Dropouts podcast, welcome to the "Travis Makes Friends" podcast. You've probably already seen the Zach Justice interview. With Jared on today's episode, I need to get Tarayummy ( @Tarayummy ) on the show to complete the trio.I'm genuinely excited about Dropouts' success. They're a fantastic example of how content creators can thrive even if they start "late." They began in 2020, but their consistent, high-quality content and strong rapport have propelled them to great heights. As a fellow content creator, seeing good people achieve such success is inspiring. In this episode, Jared and I discuss his life, his journey, and how he reached his current position. We delve into the various milestones along the way, which I find particularly fascinating because the path to success is never linear. There are always ups and downs, and Jared's story is no exception.Follow Travis on:– IG
Filmmaker, producer, writer, and podcast guest extraordinaire Jared Bailey joins to discuss one of the iconic texts of 90s popular cinema, 'Forrest Gump' directed by Robert Zemeckis and winner of the 1994 Academy Award for Best Picture (among many others). For all its swings at grandeur, the film is a deceptively simple one in premise: An ordinary man reflects on his life, regaling passersby with his stories about coming of age in America from the 1950's onward and detailing the instances in which he became a passive observer of - or coincidental participant in - many of the generation's noteworthy events. One of the greatest box office successes of the decade, the movie is also one that perfectly encapsulates the deeply cynical politics (or the posited apoliticism) of The End of History. We discuss the film's curious flattening of the historical record, papering over the thornier details of post-war America for an audience seeking to make sense of the decades of conflict that preceded the 90s and its erasure of the material context for monumental touchstones such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Then, we explore filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and his seemingly pathological need to embed bizarre racial elements into his most popular features, often commenting in ways that become more problematic than the surface-level prejudices of his contemporaries. Finally, we discuss the long-gestating (and ultimately cancelled) sequel to the film, which would have seen Forrest involved in even more historically resonant instances such as the OJ Simpson Bronco chase and the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Early in the twentieth century, for-profit companies such as Duke Power and South Carolina Electric and Gas brought electricity to populous cities and towns across South Carolina, while rural areas remained in the dark. It was not until the advent of publicly owned electric cooperatives in the 1930s that the South Carolina countryside was gradually introduced to the conveniences of life with electricity. Today, electric cooperatives serve more than a quarter of South Carolina's citizens and more than seventy percent of the state's land area.In his book, Empowering Communities: How Electric Cooperatives Transformed Rural South Carolina (USC Press, 2022), Dr. Lacy K. Ford and co-author Jared Bailey tell the story of the rise of "public" power – electricity serviced by member-owned cooperatives and sanctioned by federal and state legislation. It is a complicated saga, encompassing politics, law, finance, and rural economic development, of how the cooperatives helped bring fundamental and transformational change to the lives of rural people in South Carolina, from light to broadband.Ford talks with Dr. Edgar about how rural electrification , combined with the paving of roads, and funding of public schools, helped transform bring the Palmetto State into the modern world.

Access the entire 101 minute episode (and additional bonus episodes) by becoming a patron of Junk Filter: https://www.patreon.com/posts/58389913 Jared Bailey joins me from Columbia, South Carolina to discuss Elvis Costello's monumental 1978 pop/punk album This Year's Model, his first with his band The Attractions. Costello and his Argentine producer Sebastian Krys recently deconstructed and reimagined this landmark record for the new Spanish Model project where the album's lyrics are reinterpreted by singers from across the Spanish-speaking world, using the original backing tracks. We also discuss Elvis Costello as the prototypical dirtbag leftist, and his career-long musical relationship to the nation of Argentina, from his protest song "Shipbuilding" inspired by the war in the Falkland Islands, his undisguised contempt for the warmongering Margaret Thatcher, and his affinity with the Argentine people that must have informed the Spanish Model project, which makes this timeless work accessible to an entirely new audience of listeners. In this episode of our podcast, we're going to be hearing from math educator Jared Bailey, who spent his summer vacation building a web app for his students, so they could have their homework assignments, practice drills, schedule and his contact info all in one place. As could their parents. Bailey's ethos was simple: he wanted it to be as simple as possible for students and their families to install the app on their mobile devices, and he didn't want to deal with licensing issues or necessarily learn a ton of code. He just wanted his app to be convenient for students.
