The star of the show: the "Everyone Hides" music video!"Love is Everywhere" will get its own episode soon, of course, but it's also the other upbeat song Mary mentions in this episode. There are some examples here of Pablo Picasso's skill in figure drawing, different from his later, more experimental work. The shamisen is a cool instrument, but it's not what Nels plays in this song. It's pretty clearly just a slide - but a real nice slide, of course."Low Key" - the Tweedy music video the Mares love featuring Nick Offerman as an ape man and a whole host of other fun cameos (John Hodgeman, Michael Shannon, Mavis Staples, Chance the Rapper... whew!).Here's what a Divvy bike is for any non-Chicagoans.Maybe Lyft didn't originate in Chicago, but it sure is prevalent there. The Marina Towers, AKA the "Wilco Towers"Wrigley Field is a pretty historic ballpark and the Cubs play there.Pat Sansone pops into the Music Box Theatre in the "Everyone Hides" video - the Peter Sellers movie and Wilco album namesake Being There is on the marquee.A Beatles fan site wrote about their Rickenbackers. Here are the Beatles playing "Don't Let Me Down" during their famous rooftop concert.Apparently Paul McCartney has lost his very famous Höfner bass?Certain Sparks Lompoc: where Meredith bought her partner's McCartney style bass.Wikipedia's Beatles timeline lets you know when their last show was, when they broke up, and so much more.If you want to go down a Help rabbit hole... here. And here's a video of the great Jimmy Hendrix. Did you have a Hendrix phase like Mary?McCartney, the first solo Paul McCartney album, is musical comfort food.So is Ram.The Wilco guys running to get to their hiding spots reminded us somewhat of this clip from A Hard Day's Night (minus the being chased part). Here's a sad Ringo scene - his specialty in Beatles films. The Beatles had the best rooms in Help. Some details about the house where all of The Monkees lived together in their TV show.Next week's track: "White Wooden Cross"

Kaytee is recording with a special guest this week, her little brother! Steven is a prolific reader, working the night shift, and has big book opinions. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: vacation reading choices, and an email from a family member. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Are you on the precipice of figuring out what is specifically right for you in your life? Or are you still struggling to get to know who you really are? Either way, you'll gain a lot from this show, as it's all about helping you to find the best version of you. Alex knows that it can be really tough to find your truth in this culture of ours. We all tend to copy others in what they do and sometimes even in their mannerisms, so it becomes pretty hard at times to get clear on what feels right (or wrong) for us. Alex has found that exploring what lights you up and makes you laugh is a really great way to discover who you are, particularly if you're feeling stuck, so today, she invites you to pursue this and find out. She shares a weird and funny little story about John Hodgeman, a super smart and witty writer, comedian and actor, who also has a podcast, called The Judge John Hodgeman Show. Listen in now, to hear her funny story. Also on the show today, Alex talks to one of her favorite new authors, Stephen Cope about those relationships that have meaning. Stephen, a sweet and lovely man, is a Social Worker and a Scholar in Residence at Kripalu, an incredible Retreat Centre on the East Coast, which is also the largest yoga research institute in the western world. Stephen is a Kripalu Ambassador and he's also the author of some great best-selling books, including Yoga And The Quest For The True Self and The Wisdom Of Yoga. His latest book is called Soul Friends- The Transforming Power Of Deep Human Connection and it looks at relationships and friendships in life and helps you to understand how you become who you are, in relation to your friends. Stephen gives some great historical examples and some personal stories too. Listen in today and find out more about discovering yourself in relationship to other people. Today's Guest: Jeremy Redleaf, co-writer, co-director, co-star, producer, 3rd Street Blackout Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Jeremy Redleaf by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of hurricane blackout survivors who believe the power will be back on any minute now… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Whatever happens in a blackout stays in a blackout. But eventually, secrets about things that happened before the blackout are likely to escape the cone of silence. 3rd Street Blackout is a romantic comedy written by Negin Farsad and Jeremy Redleaf. JEREMY REDLEAF podcast excerpt: "The budget for '3rd Street Blackout' was less than a house in the middle of nowhere." It is directed and produced by Farsad and Redleaf. It also stars… you guessed it, Farsad and Redleaf. She is a foul-mouthed, often hysterically funny Iranian-American comedian, filmmaker of the documentary The Muslims Are Coming! and the author of How to Make White People Laugh. He is the man behind a transmedia production company called Brackets Creative, is a creative consultant on Fuse/Funny Or Die’s “Billy on the Street,” and, as an actor, plays Gonnigan on “Sesame Street” and narrates “Guy Code,” “Guy Court” and “Jobs That Don’t Suck” for MTV.” JEREMY REDLEAF podcast excerpt: "(Comedian) Negin Farsad and I met a couple of years ago where all comedy duos start, in Minneapolis. We were at a conference together and bonded because there was nothing else to do. Back in New York, we started writing this movie together and never stopped." By the way, 3rd Street Blackout includes cameos from comedians Janeane Garofolo, John Hodgeman and Rachel Feinstein, and features a very funny supporting turn by Phyllis Somerville, who you may recognize most recently from “Daredevil” on Netflix or as neighbor Marlene from Showtime’s “The Big C.” Key interview moments: • 4:22 3rd Street Blackout co-auteur Jeremy Redleaf explains how he met his writing and acting partner Negin Farsad; • 11:20 Redleaf reveals the budget for the indie comedy. 3rd Street Blackout Website • Facebook • Twitter • Instagram • IMDB • Rotten Tomatoes

Tom Scharpling is the host of the critically-acclaimed weekly-call in program The Best Show on WFMU. Grounded by Tom's sardonic glee, the show features phone calls, comedians and a weekly call between Tom and his comedy partner Jon Wurster, where Wurster plays numerous characters, usually from the made-up town of Newbridge, NJ. Tom was also a writer and executive producer on USA's Monk, and most recently, he has been directing a number of well-received videos for everyone from The New Pornographers to John Hodgeman. A few weeks ago, we sat down with Tom in Studio C of WFMU hours before The Best Show. On this episode: we spend ten minutes accidentally depressing Tom! Tom becomes Andy's impromptu therapist! Andy downgrades his crippling fears! We maybe learn the origins of soda! And Tom challenges us to a game of Make Me Laugh!
Episode 5: This week we have readings from David Sedaris and John Hodgeman. Believe it or not, these men wrote books, and then read those books into microphones. Naturally, hilarity ensued. Plus, David, David, and Alex present a short advertisement from the original radio theater archives.
Can you put a price on John Hodgeman? And if so, could you, a lay-person, hope to afford him? More information on John Hodgeman can be found at www.littlegraybooks.com, www.areasofmyexpertise.com, and areasofmyexpertise.blogspot.com. He is truly a well-webbed gentleman. "Furry Old Lobster" is written and performed by Jonathon Coulton, and can be purchased directly from the artist. You can find out more about Jonathan at www.jonathancoulton.com. This episode also featured "Sunset At Pensacola" by Ehren Starks. More information and work by this artist can be found at www.magnatune.com
